author is better described as, "Heuristic programming", or programming that is unpredictable and
dangerous. This arises multiple issues such as the ethics and flaws of artificial intelligence. It's
typically deemed unsafe to implement and continue to advance artificial intelligence as there are
multiple unnecessary problems that arise from expanding capabilities of AI. The author and
professor at Carnegie Mellon University, David Lorge Parnas, has had much experience with the
concept of artificial intelligence as he's been programming for over six decades. Relative to the two
books he has published in his life, this article is very new and was published in October 2017,

a) On the basis of the first three lectures provide three images of visual culture and use them to
describe what visual culture is.
Visual culture describes the aspects, things and objects, in our world made to be looked at. It is most
often associated with art however could include advertisements, books, buildings etc.
Figure 1 is a photograph of the facade of the Portal of Last Judgement, Notre Dame. The carving is
a representation of a she–devil urinating on a cardinal, pope, and a king. This is an example of
visual culture as its purpose is to be viewed. This carving dates back to the early 13th century before
the new technologies of vision. With the introduction of photography, television and social media
coupled with the boom of consumerism, contemporary visual culture was born.
Contemporary visual culture involves an extremely broad range of mediums due to the technology
at hand today. With computer technology, artists are capable of manipulating and creating images in
ways that were once inconceivable. Figure 2 was made digitally in Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop
. This image demonstrates how contemporary visual culture has morphed from traditional mediums
such as painting and sculpting, into something more commercial and easy to circulate. Figure 2 is an
album cover designed to be easily recognisable, it's been made as something to look at however it

having most popular visions of the future being dark and dystopian. The streets are clean and the

In The United States of America, thanks to the first amendment, activism is very much so alive in
today's society as well as throughout our history. In this paper I will discuss how the public can
interface physically with Ai Weiwei's Arch as opposed to works of art in a museum. For example, in
the majority of cases, museums require people to stand behind a line and simply observe a creation
on display. However, Ai's approach through the statues tangibility allows for the viewer to more
easily connect to its true meaning and formulate an opinion. I will convey the significance of

contemporary Chinese artist and activist, Ai Weiwei, documenting how he stood up against the
Chinese government and revealed the horrific actions the government commits. Ai Weiwei differs
from other critics of the Chinese government because he uses aggressive words, while his fellow
critics do not insult the government or the Communist Party. He uses several mediums to show how
the government has acted including his blog and documentaries, showing what Chinese citizens go
through on a daily basis.. Weiwei is incredibly brave for putting his life on the line to fight for a
better country and a better world.

18, 1957. When Ai was only one year old him and his family were sent to a labor camp. It was not

Long before the Western countries discovered North America, the Native Americans lived and
thrived here. Historians believe these wandering peoples crossed over a land bridge that formed
when the earth froze over, officially named Beringia, to get to North America. These nomadic
Natives began spreading and forming different tribes around North America. One of the many tribes
was the Ais Indians of Florida. By themselves, the tribes reigned the New World, but contact with
the Westerns began their tragic demise. Although little is known about the origins of the Ais Indians,
historians do know that they settled around 1000 BC. The Ais Indians were located on the Atlantic
Coast of Florida, from present day Cape Canaveral to St. Lucie. This area would have covered four
counties: Brevard, Indian River, St. Lucie, and the northern part of Martin. The Ais Indians resided
in towns and villages along the Indian River in huts. Similar to any group of people, the Ais had a
leader called the Cacique. The Cacique was determined by whom the most respected matrilineal
family was in the tribe. Unlike the traditions of the West, the Cacique would rule through suggestion
instead of force. Regarding to housing, the huts they lived in were framed with wood or sticks, then
they were covered in palmetto leaves to form walls and a roof. As expected, the Cacique's hut was

over the world are currently developing and making AI a reality. I know that my major is involved
with the project intending to bring AI into reality which is interesting, but it still has me wondering
if this is a good idea. I imagine AI as the future such that we will have them at school, in our house

WeiWei is an architect, activist, filmmaker, curator, and China's most famous artist. WeiWei is
unapologetic in his criticism of the Chinese government, which led to him being famously detained
for months in 2011, then released to house arrest. Most of WeiWei's best known works are
installations, often leaning towards the conceptual and creating dialogue between the contemporary

In Searle's opinion, computers can never be minds because they are inherently different from brains.
He argues that brains do not merely instantiate a program but also cause mental events by virtue of
specific neuro – biological processes. Searle is essentially making the contention that brains, by
virtue of their specific biochemical properties, cause minds. Consequently, according to Searle, any
artifact that produced mental phenomena would have to be able to duplicate the specific causal
powers of brains and it could not do that just by running a formal computer program. Although it is
interesting to contemplate, Searle's argument definitely has its share of flaws. The Churchlands, as
proponents in the possibility of artificial intelligence to duplicate the mind, (yet not believers of
strong AI as it was previously defined ) do their best to illustrate these weaknesses in his theory. The
primary objection which they have with Searle's argument against the plausibility of artificial
intelligence lies with the third premise in his original proof. The Churchlands argue that this
premise, which states, "Syntax by itself is neither constitutive of nor sufficient for semantics," is an
assumption rather than a fact. Additionally, they contend that to assume its truth is tantamount to

My Childhood Journey
I spent most of my childhood traveling the world. What a way to spend a childhood tell you, I am
the person I am today because of the places I have been, the opportunities I have had, and the people
I have met. I can not even remember the abundant number of times I have been woken up at four am
to leave for the airport. Dragging my sleepy feet behind me and dumping myself into the car. I
remember waiting in the jet way and, the deep inhale I would take when I'd first step foot on the
aircraft. Taking in a big breath of the "airplane air" that would always burn through my nose and
make me slightly nauseous. Over the years I have learned to hold my breath or to breathe out of my
mouth until I got to my seat. These are the same memories I relive every time I begin a new
adventure. As a kid I thought being pulled out of school for a week to go to Belize or Grand Turk
was normal; or that every other weekend every kid went to New York for the day to have lunch and
do some light shopping then fly home that night. It was not until one day with my twin sister sitting
in the seat next to me that I realized we were not like most kids. The flight attendant had bent down
in–between my sister and I as she quietly asked us if our parents had died. At twelve years old I was
shocked and left speechless. She went on to ask us why we were in school and it flourished into a
