Should Community Service Be Mandatory Graduation...
A continuous debate that is currently receiving much attention is whether community service should
be a mandatory graduation requirement. Preparing students to effectively function in the real world
is an important aspect of our education system. Today more than ever, there is an emphasis on
having experience before beginning work. Most jobs are now focused on looking past your resume
to see what you have given back to the community. Nevertheless, it is important that schools focus
on preparing college students for the work force by mandating that they receive all of the necessary
exposure and experience. Numerous schools across the country have mandated that in order for their
students to graduate, they must complete a predetermined amount of community service. In
Maryland, high school students are required to complete a minimum of 75 hours of service in order
to graduate. However, this decision has resulted in a lot of mixed responses. Advocates of this
decision stress that mandatory community service opens doors for students, while the opponents feel
that it takes away valuable time from students who need to focus on their education. I believe that
gaining experience outside of school is critical for future success in life. To ensure that students are
prepared to transition smoothly from school to work, they need to be involved with the community
while in school in order to build the leadership skills that are necessary to succeed.

Responsibility Essay
Responsibility Actuality
College students are plagued by too much time on their hands. The average college stereotype is
kids who spend too much money, drink too much booze, and party too hard. While this isn't true of
all college students, as many work very hard to get good grades, get degrees, and have a life, it's true
of enough of them that the stereotype does prove itself true quite often. This is the problem that
Dave Eggers postulates a way of solving in his essay Serve Or Fail. Eggers' idea of making public
service volunteering a mandatory part of your college education is brilliant and would no doubt aid
in many areas of College student's lives.
According to Eggers, "...students saw [...] hours in need of killing – as opposed to ... Show more

There's the chance as well that the student, perhaps someone with an undecided major, will
encounter something that will help them make their decision once and for all. Maybe, as Eggers
says, "A college history major might learn something by tutoring a local middle school class that's
studying the Underground Railroad. A connection would be forged; a potential career might be
discovered" (584). But perhaps beyond that, having that sort of practical experience will aid
students in other ways – preparing them for life beyond college in a way that none of them are
currently. Eggers says,
"...while colleges give their students the intellectual tools for life beyond campus, they largely
ignore the part about how they might contribute to the world. That is, until the commencement
speech, at which time all the "go forth's" and "be helpful's" happen" (585).
So perhaps instituting a mandatory service for graduation program would do more than simply give
the students something nice to go on their resumes – but perhaps it would also aid them in deciding
on a major or even a career. In other words, it would help ensure their future once they're out of
college and into the "real world."
Such programs are already in place in many institutes of higher education, and even in high schools.
And in 2003, Michael R. Veon, a Democrat and a member of Pennsylvania's House Of
representatives, introduced a bill

The investigators narrow the citizenship into two aspects: active social behaviors and the sense of
agency. In conclusion, the respondents shows less passion and enthusiasm while volunteering
compulsively. This, as a result, descends their active behaviors, as well as the sense of agency.
This paper shows strong indications on the relations between compulsory volunteering and
participants' attitudes, which would directly lead to alters on their citizenship. This paper certifies
that faulty policy on volunteering would not only reduce the amounts of future volunteers, but also
degrade their citizenship.

Fish Food Bank Goals
Two goals I hope to achieve by going on this trip are exposing myself to different ways of life and
learning how I can help others in need. It is evident we are not all the same. Some of us have had to
overcome greater obsticals than others, yet we are all living for a better something. I want to learn
about the social issues I am unaware of that people have to deal with on a daily basis.
The most memorable connection I have to a service is volunteering at my local FISH food bank. I
have gone knocking door to door asking for cans for my local FISH food bank. I have also been able
to work with a group of students like myself to create Christmas baskets for families. I have been
able to help the FISH food bank plant gardens for the community. I, myself, have benefited from the
FISH food bank during my childhood until now. My parents have always obtained some of the food
we ate from the so generous FISH food bank. I am grateful to the people that donate food, volunteer,
and coordinate the FISH food bank because it has provided not only my family but ... Show more

I am able to overcome change pretty quickly though. When it comes to working hands on and
outside of a classroom, I feel more comfortable working in groups. I cope good with flexibility. I am
able to get acostomed to a change and be flexible enough to work with it.
Some challenges I could forsee having on this trip would be getting used to a new environment. I do
not really travel much and am not aware of the way of life in other places even in just the United
States. I am from Hood River, an extremely small town in which not much happens. The town is
extremely calm that when I visit an urban place like downtown Portland, it feels like a completely
different way of life. I will prepare myself to adapt to a new team and volunteer work by interacting

A Interview On The Volunteer Program
The volunteer program that the RCOC has constructed requires all the people that are interesting to
go through a vetting process that all employees, board members, and other persons that working
closely with the organization must go through. The potential volunteer must go through a
background check, submit a drug screening, have or be able to obtain a fingerprint clearance card,
and have a shot record that verifies that they have taken a TB test. The outreach center wanted
prospective volunteers take part of these procedures to ensure that the individuals representing the
organization have no criminal record and have some sense stability. Before a potential volunteer
goes completes the vetting process, they have to submit an online volunteer application, so we can
discover their areas of interest, their experience level, and decide if they would be a good fit for the
RCOC organization. If we have applicant seems to meet the appropriate criteria they will be
selected for an interview. The interview process will include questions as to why they want to
volunteer at RCOC, what they want to get out of the experience, and giving them some scenarios
that can occur to establish their problem solving skills. After they have successful completed the
interview up they will be placed in one of four volunteer departments. RCOC keeps in mind what
the individual areas of interest were before making this choice and the volunteers are allowed to

Persuasive Essay On Why We Do People Volunteer
The extinction of wildlife, the rising poverty levels, and the destruction left from natural disasters
can all be greatly decreased if we took some time out of our day and volunteered to make a positive
difference in the world. When we volunteer, we not only give back to our community, but to
ourselves. We can receive a sense of accomplishment by doing the simplest of deeds while
impacting someone else's life for the better. When we volunteer, we can strengthen our community,
make a difference for the environment, and lastly, we can improve our own lives. Volunteers around
the world volunteer for one reason: to help. When we decide to volunteer, we're doing this because
we want to improve the lives of the fellow people and animals within our community. We want to
see a change, and in order to do so, we need to be the change. We need to have the willpower and
dedication to stick with something and accomplish our goals. According to UC San Diego, one of
the world's leading public research universities, "The estimated value of a volunteer's time in
California is $26.87 per hour." What this means is that we can actually help the community
economically. With the time that we spend volunteering, we can actually be working and earning
that money, but instead we are giving back to the community. Volunteering can be beneficial on
many levels, but only if a person is willing to go the extra mile and put in the work. Even if a
handful of people just went to the soup kitchen, animal

The Role Of Volunteering In The United States
The United States, as some can say, is a country known to be a hand in help. Although, they are a
help by choice not mandatorly. In the United States there is a great amount of volunteers for many
volunteering programs. The amount of volunteers increase through the years for different causes.
There are volunteers for schools, churches, sport clubs, and even more. Not only do Americans
volunteer but also make donations. Americans do this sincerely from heart, not because it's a law.
Now imagine, if the United States were to obligate Americans to serve one year of national service.
The amount for volunteers would decrease as well as the donations, if they become forced into it. It
would take the joy out in doing these things

The Importance of Volunteering: College Students Should...
Nowadays, it is very difficult to get a job without a College Diploma. Our ever–increasing demands
on student's academic performances have insured well–educated adults, but what we have failed to
focus on is the vital component of volunteerism as an integral part of rearing well–rounded adults.
College students should be required to complete a year of community service/volunteer work before
they can graduate, in order to create mature and caring adults and versatile future leaders. By
mandating all College students across the United States of America to add another year to their
studies and use this year for community service/volunteer work only, we will be able to increase

The most recent generations have been labeled as having an entitlement mentality, because these
young adults have a tendency of being self focused and absorbed.
Nevertheless, the common misconception linked to graduating College students is that they are
well–rounded adults, who have done their time and are ready and able to enter the working force
and go on with their lives. The fact of the matter is that not all recent college students are mature
and knowledgeable on their community and the world at large. "Teens who volunteer increase their
knowledge of the world and the problems that face it" ("Youths"). This quote is not only applicable
to teens, but college students as well; unfortunately, college students become isolated from the rest
of the world while they are in their course of study and do not make time to give back to the
community that helped them become who they are.
In my five years of active volunteer work with multiple non–profit organizations, I have seen
firsthand the lack of attendance of my peers in times of great community need and support from its
members. Although it has become more complicated to find time to give back to the community,
with a full–time school and work schedule, there is always spare time to give back. The rapidly
growing demand for volunteers in communities all across America is increasing and it is everyone's
duty, especially college students, to pay their dues to the

Persuasive Essay About Community Service
As an 18–year–old tennager, I was forced by my parents to participate a summer volunteer program
in my freshman year. Even though I felt that I was a victim of "tyranny" in the beginning, I realized
that I actually enjoyed the process of helping people in the middle of the program. Now, I
participate that program every year as an active member, and I have gained the personal enrichment
that I am unable to learn from other sources such as math club or SAT preparatory class. There is no
doubt that community service can bring essential benefits in helping students develop their moral
value and future interest, and it should be mandatory because some students attempt to utilize
community service as a tool for their own profit without the school supervision. Volunteerism
enables students to gain the moral lesson that is vital to their life and develop their future interest.
According to source 2, "community service teaches us through experience – about the relationship
between empathy and responsibility, about what it takes to be part of a community, in essence, about
human being". While students are helping their community, they learn the crucial moral lessons in
the most direct and impressive way. Through an actual experience of volunteering, students are
reminded that it is their responsibility to serve for their community because they are a part of it.
Helping without any feedback allows them to realize the power of empathy, the essential value that

Volunteering In High Schools
J.J. Watt, an American football defensive end for the Houston Texans, once said, "My mom taught
me from a young age to give back and volunteer any chance you get." (Brainyquote). Despite
gaining all the fame and money from the NFL (National Football League), the defensive end
believes in the power and the potential of volunteering by altruistically helping out Hurricane
Harvey victims with necessary supplies such as water, food, and other basic needs (USA Today).
There certainly has to be a sort of flare that ignites the heart of a volunteer in order to selflessly aid
others, as exemplified by Watt. Yet, that aspect of community service is presently vague among
many high schools. Currently, many high schools require students to volunteer for a ... Show more

Unfortunately one major question arises from this obligation. Does mandatory volunteering truly
invoke the spirit of volunteering? Selective colleges, in general, are more stringent than they were in
the past by the recruiting process. In fact, the admission committees of these respective colleges
accurately discern inadequate applications from powerful ones, especially in relationship to the
commitment level of community service. Passion for community service is a vital indicator for
recruiting. They desire students who strongly dedicate themselves to volunteer with something that
coincides with their interests or major. However, "mandatory volunteering" generates a belief that
community service is a hindrance and a deliberate waste of time towards obtaining a diploma. The
embodiment of community service diminishes as these educational institutions continue to exercise
their power to regulate civic engagement. Thus, selective colleges are likely to identify and reject
those who only fulfill the negative aspects of mandatory

How Does Volunteering Teach You Empathy?
Throughout history, humans have been known to be egocentric. For example, vast greedy empires
would often overtake other trifling empires just to gain what they had even if they didn 't need it.
While too many Americans are selfish and disconnected from their communities, those who
volunteer, however, learn empathy, understand other cultures, develop a positive work ethic and
ultimately build a solid personal character. Who wouldn 't desire those attributes? If you had any
type of sense, you would realize how sedulous it is to gain those traits through doing one simple
thing......volunteering. Volunteering will teach you traits that can lead to phenomenal contributions
for the world such as empathy. How does volunteering teach you empathy? Empathy is the capacity
to understand or feel what another person is experiencing from within another's frame of reference;
the capacity to place oneself in another 's position. It's what makes a person want to make a
difference, make the world a superior place and while you can discuss this matter at great lengths,
and read countless testimonies about it, the most powerful way to teach empathy is by
example.Volunteering causes you to become altruistic and reminds you to not judge someone since
you haven 't walked a mile in their shoes. Teaching empathy is literally the building blocks to
raising a benefactor, a good person, to creating positive change and to being buoyant on the inside.

The Nepal Volunteers Council
In July and August of 2012, I volunteered with the Nepal Volunteers Council1 for a month in
Kathmandu, Nepal, and I found that despite the NVC hired many international volunteers who
contribute a considerable amount of money to the organization, it did not disclose to any volunteer
its source of funding or where and how much was the money spent. Later on, I was informed that
there was actually a board which provides the major funding for the NVC, implying that the
organization was not as responsible for the international volunteers as I expected. However,
international volunteers are one of the most important stake holders in the perspective of this

Why Volunteering Important?
Edward "Ted" Kennedy, a former senior United States Senator from Massachusetts, once said,
"Volunteer work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dreams shall never die."
(Kennedy, Ted) Merriam Webster defines "volunteerism" as the act or practice of doing volunteer
work in community service. (Webster, Merriam) Not only do you get to feel good about yourself,
but also you get the satisfaction of incorporating service into the lives of people and making a
difference in your community. With busy lives, it can be hard to find time to volunteer, however the
benefits of volunteering are enormous to you and your community. A person who volunteers
benefits themselves because they get to see how their contribution has made a difference. This
experience contributes to personal development. The selfless act of volunteering provides a spiritual
enhancement as well. If people never help each other and only care about themselves, the world
becomes a crueler, sadder place, but when we volunteer our time or efforts, we help make our planet
a better, happier, cleaner, and safer home where people work together to make life easier for all.
I first started volunteering when I entered high school. It was a requirement at my school to finish
high school with 80 hours or more. I had just moved to Dallas, Texas and I was very shy and quite. I
was not a very outgoing person and had trouble making new friends. I saw joining Student Council

Synthesis Essay: Why Nonmilitary Needs
The United States is a country of volunteers. In 2002–2003, 64 million Americans (28.8 percent of
those 16 and older) donated 52 hours a year, the equivalent of more than one full work week, to
building shelters, coaching Little League, caring for the elderly, teaching literacy, and countless
other community–minded pursuits. Statistics show in Source F that "groups mandatory and
nonvolunteers – were less likely to volunteer 8 years after high school than persons who strongly
encouraged to volunteer or did it for strictly voluntary reason (43 percent)." Military need is not
logically equivalent to nonmilitary need, mostly because we fulfill nonmilitary needs through the
normal operations of government. When the State identifies work to be done for the common good,
it taxes citizens and directs its employees to perform that work. The State might also hire contractors
to complete the work. This is the way we build highways and libraries. If the State performs these
basic functions poorly, it fails in its ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

it proper to compel those people to reallocate their time, so that they're serving "the public" rather
than their family, friends or neighbors? Everyone's life is different and everyone finds ways to give

better to leave the decision to them and let them contribute in their own way, not just when they are

Apathy Is A Severe Problem Essay
British Abolitionist William Wilberforce once said, "You may choose to look the other way but you
can never say again that you did not know". In contemporary Canadian society today, apathy is a
severe problem. Canadians may be aware that there are people in the world who are starving,
homeless and diseased, but don't do anything themselves to help end global suffering. Often, this is
because of a lack of understanding and experience. It is difficult for Canadians to relate to people
they do not know exist or see for themselves, even if they are aware that people around them might
be suffering. Others might believe that even if they did try to help the underprivileged, that it
wouldn't be enough to cause a lasting effect. In experiencing the culture and the lives of
marginalized groups of people, and by choosing to become involved in their lives, I have learned
through my volunteer experience, that there is something everyone can do to help someone else who
is in–need. I will begin this essay by telling about myself and my volunteer experience. Second, I
will address my privilege and how my volunteer experience has changed my perception of it. Third,
I will explain my assumptions on North American care homes at the beginning of my volunteer
experience and on whether or not my assumptions were justifiable in the end. Finally, I will state
how my volunteer work at the Sherbrooke Community Centre has effected my views on Canadian
society and the underprivileged in society. Not

Benefits Of Volunteer Work
Knowing how she helped out with senior citizens will provide happiness, since she knows she did
something excellent. Going out to volunteer in work is to help out the community. Helping out the
community will keep it healthy from the people littering. Something that is inclined to do without
getting a reward back. The benefits of volunteer work are gaining work experience, getting to unify,
and volunteer to become a role model.
One advantage of volunteer work is that it will help a person gain experience how it will be to go
work in an authentic job and would not have in a job. In a volunteer work majority of the people
give their time for a great cause, it can avail in the present when going to apply for a job, and there
for the supervisor can accommodate as a reference when applying for jobs. Given these points,
volunteering allows people to provide new skills that in the long run everyone will once need
provide in a future job. When applying for a job they will require skills, and when writing down
volunteering work experiences it will stand out in a person's resume. They will see that the person
has done volunteer work and it will open there eyes due to them seeing that you are willing to help

Short Term Volunteer Trips ( 1-3 Days ) Essay
There are numerous aspects of voluntourism that are positive in nature. For example, short–term
volunteer trips (1–3 weeks) can be quite beneficial in the case of dealing with the aftermath of a
natural disaster. In the case of a serious catastrophe like that, it can take years to rebuild the
community that it occurred in. With a continuous stream of fresh volunteer recruits, the momentum
will remain at a constant pace. A short–term time frame for this type of scenario will result in more
efficient progress being made. On another topic, volunteers have been proven, through extensive
research on the subject, to be able to provide locals with some things that very few other aid
workers can. The volunteers can be an effective link between the locals of the community and the
humanitarian organizations. As an example, they can help locals fill out the forms required to apply
for funding for certain projects. Volunteers can also help the locals understand ways in which they
can effectively communicate with their government, and potentially receive more aid from them.
Voluntourism agencies often emphasize the emotional connections that tourists can make with the
locals, but rarely speak about this kind of connection that I have just mentioned. In other words,
tourists can be a great resource for the locals, and that is a very positive aspect of the voluntourism
industry. Another positive aspect is that the experiences that a voluntourist goes through while

Happiness Is A Feeling Or Feeling Of Accomplishment
What is happiness? A feeling or euphoria or a feeling of accomplishment, perhaps both? Is
happiness something we can create or something that appears to us when we need it most? I feel that
happiness is something that is unique to each person. What fills me with inner joy might not for
others and vice versa. Happiness is subjective, but one thing I think everyone will find is that a part
of their happiness is found in growing as a person. Life begins at the end of your comfort zone and
maybe happiness is found there too! For me, happiness is best achieved when I am growing as a
person. Working through obstacles that have come up in my path, expanding my horizons through
meeting new people, or learning something new in a class. I have come to see that when I push
myself out of my comfort zone (physically or emotionally), this is where I find happiness.
Reaching the edge of your comfort zone can be done through many things. One example of when I
have felt truly happy is during travels. This can be travels to another state or travel in other
countries. When one are traveling, there is constant growth. There are different obstacles that result
from each new adventure. Plans for travel can be made, but in my experience, travel never goes
according to the plan and that is its beauty. One time, in Peru, I ended up having to ride an overnight
bus, then take a taxi to a hostel, then take another taxi to the airport. At the time I was eighteen, with

requirement as "to demand as necessary or essential; :to impose a compulsion or command on; to
claim or ask for by right and authority" (Webster Merriam n.p.). The two contrasting
aforementioned definitions are included in the strong debate on whether schools and student
organizations should have the ability to require a certain amount of time each term (such as
trimesters or trimesters) taking part in volunteer work and community service. Establishing
volunteer work as a requirement would make it involuntary, in which a student will not fully
understand the benefits that volunteer work can bring. Volunteerism can bring new friendships,
feelings of accomplishment and motivation, kindness and tenderness, and also more consideration
for others.
If service work is in the form of a "course" assignment, does a student completing volunteerism
achieve the feeling(s) of accomplishment––and what it brings––or moreso a grade in the grade
book? Volunteerism can show good citizenship and create compassion; however, by having
volunteer work forced upon student it forces compassion, making it an unreal and false experience
of what service work can actually bring someone. People choosing to volunteer for events or
support do so in the thoughts of others; volunteerism is to be completed without getting anything in
return except for a feeling of accomplishment that pushes to do more to help his/her community.
When volunteer work is changed to mandatory, a student is not focusing on helping others, he/she is
more focus on gaining points to earn a certain grade in a class. Service work should not be abused to
form students into better citizens with more kindness; a student should want to be a compassionate
citizen of their community on their own, the idea should already be formed.
Instead of instructing students to take part in service work, encourage students to try being more
active in the community. By encouraging students to help others

An Essay On Volunteerism
"To volunteer" is to carry out acts for the benefit of others without a physical obligation to do so.
"To be a volunteer" is to willingly devote your time and resources to a cause, a person, or a group of
people. The act of volunteering is one of the basic expressions of human behavior, through which
individuals align their interests with those of their respective communities and together assist in
achieving worthwhile social progress. By volunteering individuals demonstrate their involvement in
society, their individualism, and at the same time – their insect–like unison.
Firstly, through volunteering individuals show their capacity for understanding others; their
empathy. For instance: when you see a crying child on the street you feel a ... Show more content on

Everyone can participate in a voluntary activity and contribute , by possibilities and the time that
they have. Especially young people who often use their free time with other activities and do not
became part of volunteering, without knowing that this activity may serve in the future.
Volunteer work is an act or action of a group of individuals organized, to improve and alleviate
various problems that a given community may have.
A volunteer is an individual who serves in the community, because so wants and is his choice.
Most volunteers are part of the structures of no profit organizations. By definition, a volunteer is a
individual who performs a free job against a service provided by his will.
Volunteerism in general principle is the practice of people working , who work for others without
being motivated by financial or material benefits. Volunteerism is mainly related to an altruistic

I Am A Community Service
Introduction
It is often joked that beginning college is like re–entering the womb. Similar to the warm, nurturing
space that was home to us for the last nine months before birth, higher education aims to prepare us
for life outside, in the world. Unfortunately, college also earns this association due to what some,
perhaps unfairly, dub its "coddling nature," and the tendency of students to use their schools as a
place to hide from the harsher realities of the adult world. The uncomfortable truth appears to be
that these detractors are right. For many students attending classes and work, it is far too easy to lose
oneself in one, the other or both. The rare free time that's left over? A temptation to spend it on
oneself usually wins out. As a consequence, students lose much of the insight they might gain from
spending more time interacting directly with the society in which they live. They lose touch. I firmly
feel performing community service enables one to remain grounded in purpose and place in one's
world, while working toward one's professional degree.
This essay, an extended look at the nature and benefits of service to one's community, will tackle its
subject in four parts: the definition of community service (what is it, really?), the motivation and
goals behind community service (why do it?), questions of area and location (how and where can I
do it?), and, finally, the impact of community service (how does it change things?).
Part I: The definition of community

How I Learned For Human Growth And Development
Throughout this course we were required to complete ten hours of volunteer service at specific
areas. While completing these ten hours I got to experience children and the way they act and think.
This will be a reflection on how volunteering influenced me and how what I learned for human
growth and development tied into my experience. I did my volunteering hours at the Diamond
Village Baby Gator Child Development Center. Which offers, "High quality care to children ages
six weeks to five years. Children grow and learn in a safe and healthy environment with a caring
and attentive staff of well–trained early childhood educators. Curriculum is designed to encourage
children to experience the world around them. Baby Gator addresses the needs of all children and
fosters growth in social, behavioral, cognitive, and physical skills and early literacy skills (Baby
Gator)." I was an addition to the Blue Jays (The name of the students in that specific class.), which
included four year olds, also known as the Growing Gators. "The Growing Gator classrooms
emphasize problem–solving, conflict mediation, independence skills, and pre–academic skills (such
as – letter and number recognition, pre–writing, story comprehension, & math/sciences processes).
Activities are embedded in play and sensory experiences and are based on general milestones for the
age group. Teachers help scaffold children's individual skill development through one–on–one
interactions and small group activities (Baby

Elementary Hosts Popcorn At School
Every other Friday, Cascades Elementary hosts Popcorn Friday in their cafeteria. Volunteers come
and help make, bag, and distribute the salty snack to the classrooms. The line goes popcorn
machine, empty bags, bag folders and tape placers, finished bags, and classroom totes. However, to
make the line flow easily, the line might go; empty bags, popcorn machine, bag folders, tapers,
finished bags in lines of five, and the classroom totes that are brought up from the classroom. This
suggested lineup requires a volunteer to open bags and place them so the popcorn machine
volunteer is able to reach the paper bags, and possibly a couple more volunteers to ensure the
supplies needed never runs out and the flow is maintained. Unfortunately, many parents with
nothing to do on Fridays do not come to help.
On Popcorn Day, the volunteers meet at Cascades Elementary at eight in the morning in the
cafeteria after dropping their children off at school. One volunteer begins to heat up the popcorn
maker and make popcorn while a second volunteer sets out bags and a third sets out strips of tape
along the side of the table. After classes begin, the teacher selects two students to take the class
mesh tote and the popcorn money for the class to the cafeteria where the volunteers make the
popcorn. Once the students hand one of the volunteers the class tote and popcorn money, the
students are able to go back to class. The average popcorn bags requested by each classroom is
about 30 bags. The

Volunteering In College
Winston Churchill once stated, "We make a living by what we do, but we make a life by what we
give." According to this great leader, making money is not the only basis for happiness; he feels that
one must also give of one's time in order to live a more fulfilling life. Following this ideology,
volunteering in one's community would be a means to accomplish a more rewarding existence. This
idea has sparked a debate about whether students should be required to volunteer in order to gain
their diplomas. Requiring volunteer hours to graduate should not be considered because being made
to help others could lead to apathy, there is not a course of study for volunteering, and volunteering
could affect the monetary situation for some students. First and foremost, forced volunteerism for
high school seniors may lead to a greater apathy toward the needs of others. When students are
made to give of their time, they may show their resentment by performing poorly. For instance, last
fall I worked at a soup kitchen. One of the helpers had been required to be there because his mother
wanted him to see how privileged he was. This young man spilled more food than he ... Show more

Concern for others must be fostered at an early age. Pres–school would be a better venue for this
service idea. Plus, there are students with disorders such as Autism who would have severe
difficulty fulfilling the requirements. Volunteering is not a feasible request of all seeking a high
school diploma. Though volunteering and giving back to the community are important, making
volunteer hours a requirement for graduation is a bad decision. Mandatory volunteerism is an
oxymoron. The want to help has to be present and should not enter into the realm of regulation for
graduating seniors. Each individual must choose what he or she gives and the life he or she

Volunteer Hours Research Paper
In the winter of the tenth grade, I was unexpectedly woken up by my mom, who was informing me
that I had to volunteer for the Breakfast with Santa event hosted by CP24. In the moment, I was so
angry because I had already completed my volunteer hours and now, what was supposed to be a
relaxing Saturday turned into one where I would have to volunteer for hours. Upon groggily waking
up, I realized that it was six in the morning, pitch black outside and snowing profusely. At this point,
I'm begging my mom not to make me go, especially since I was already done my volunteer work.
However, she told me that I would make a huge difference to the event as well as, the children that
were going to be there. Unconvinced, I angrily climbed into the car and prepared myself ... Show

At this point, I was getting bored so I decided to start a conversation with the friendly looking kid,
his name was Jesse. Talking while doing the work definitely made the time go by much faster and I
also learned why he enjoyed volunteering so much. He mentioned to me that he did this event every
single year despite already amassing 300 volunteer hours. He continued to volunteer because, while
it may seem like a lot of work, the expression on the face of the less fortunate children at the end is
well worth it. I assumed he meant that the gifts we distributed gave the kids a lot of joy, however, I
was in for a surprise. As I talked to Jesse, my attitude towards the tasks began to improve and time

The Impact Of Volunteering
INTRODUCTION ATTENTION STATEMENT: "Volunteering behaviour has been a powerful
driving force in the betterment of humanity, a key contributor to the solving of mankind's problems
(de Abreu, 2015)." as stated in a scholarly article, Managing Volunteerism Behaviour. Volunteering
has been proven to be one of the most important things in our lives.
PERSONAL/AUDIENCE LINK: When our eldest deaf child was born 7 years ago, volunteering
has been our thing ever since, especially for the Deaf community. What a difference it has made for
us and the community. It helps create warmth and excitement to all of us.
THESIS STATEMENT: Don't you all love the affection in leading the others to feel inspired and
help grow their self–esteems from volunteerism? In this speech, I will explain the definition,
benefits, and opportunities as volunteers.

MAIN POINT #1: Definition
"Volunteering is time willingly given for the common good and without financial gain.
(www.volunteeringaustralia.org, n.d.)".
Volunteering should not be used as profit, or be used to replace paid employees.
"Activism can be considered volunteering. This definition is aligned to the current UN position on
volunteering... (www.volunteeringaustralia.org, n.d.)" as stated in their website.
MAIN POINT #2: Benefits
We as volunteers will be assisting in finding ways for the organization to fulfill its mission. We all
get to learn new things everyday from volunteering.
Here are some examples of volunteering work I have done in the past.
I was a co–chair for Rocky Mountain Deaf School building committee. Couple of volunteers and I
participated in a peaceful activism involving a property for the new school building. There was a
protest from the neighbors opposing the deaf school on the property. If our activism didn't happen,
we wouldn't build our school building on our current property

Mandatory Volunteering In High School
In high school students live very different lives and do very different things. Not many students
volunteer though so some schools are starting to force students to volunteer now in order to
graduate. The question here is if this is truly a wise thing to do.
In many schools, including my own, volunteering is becoming mandatory to graduate. Some people
don't believe this is a good idea because it could hurt more than it helps. One thing about mandatory
volunteering is if it is volunteering at all. When you volunteer for something it should be because
you want to help the community instead of just looking at it as if it's a grade. Also, charities fear that
forcing kids to do volunteering in high school can make them look at volunteering in a bad way and
in return when student become older they may not want to volunteer. (Republic, Author Charity) ...

But as a person that come from a low–income family myself I know what it means to be force to
volunteer. I don't believe that when schools make volunteering mandatory they don't look at low
income families. There are kids like me that have to work to help their family or to pay their own
bills. I work four or five days a week and don't get home as late as midnight sometimes which
leaves me very little time to do homework, study, and do my chores. So, after all of this I only have
three days off sometimes and I need that for projects, homework, studying, and having at least a
small social life which is good for kids. I've asked teachers how I am supposed to make time to go
to school, go to work, do homework and study and on top of that do volunteering and they
recommend taking time off work to volunteer which mean I lose money I need to pay bills. This is
why I feel making volunteering mandatory is not good for student who have to work, and you can't
require one person to do something and not another

Personal Narrative: A Career As A Resident Assistant
Volunteer work has always been a prominent activity that occurred within my life. Growing up with
a father that was involved in the community so much that it felt like it was his job, I was always
surrounded by community service and helping others. At the young age of six years old, I decided to
do my part as well, feeding the homeless in a local church in New Bedford, Massachusetts. From
that year on, I believe a majority of my most valuable characteristics derived directly from my
volunteer work. Now, almost thirteen years later, I am involved in over 100 hours of community
service per year and am ready to apply it into a new field– as a Resident Assistant. The first
characteristic I possessed from my volunteering is becoming a team player. Being involved in so
many committees, boards, and groups I have picked up the ability to work well, collaboratively with
others. In my past, I have played many different roles. I have been on a serving team while feeding
the homeless. I have been on the marketing committee for a Cape Verdean Community Day event. I

importance of being a dedicated, contributing member of whatever team I am a part of. This same
notion can be applied to being becoming a Resident Assistant. By doing my part efficiently, it
allows others to do theirs' efficiently as well, and through this, the chain of progress and success
continues, as unit. Being a positive and respectful teammate allows not only myself to progress in
my job position, but allows the entire ResLife Department to progress as

Service Learning Should NOT be Mandatory For College...
Service learning is the name for forcing college students to do volunteer work as part of their
college careers. The hope is that this volunteer work will give students a better sense of civic duty,
and thus, be a worthy addition to college curriculums. However, this idea relies on the faulty
premise that if one is forced to volunteer that one will derive the same benefits as someone who
does it out of their own desire to help. Mandatory service learning will not have the desired effect,
and should not be forced upon students.
It is perhaps intuitive to think that by making students help others there will be a net positive; there
could be no downside to volunteering time and effort to help the community. However, a more

However, to a company their time is money. If a company is forced to give its time and resources to
volunteer, it might as well give money instead. That money, in the form of taxes, is already paid by
both companies and individuals to the government. That money, in turn, should be used to help
communities when needed. If communities need extra help, the answer is increasing taxes to
provide that extra help. Forcing college students to provide that help directly ignores the efficiencies
gained from specialization. A college student, who isn't even studying whatever field is needed,
would be able to help more by working in their actual field for money, and then giving that money
to a specialist, via the government, to provide the direct help. The only problem with that
arrangement is that it doesn't provide the positive feelings that directly helping would. However,
gaining a positive sense of accomplishment at the expense of providing less efficient help is a purely
selfish motivation.
In the case of labor being needed that almost anyone could do, there is an even greater gain in
having the public at large finance the work instead of doing it directly. Instead of having a college
student learn about basic construction, which he will likely never use again in his career, wouldn't it
make more sense to pay someone local to the community to do the work instead? That way, not only
is the work done, but

Exemplify The Ideals Of Volunteerism And Humanities
As an individual I believe that I exemplify the ideals of volunteerism and humanities as not just
giving back to your community in a positive manner but learning from these experiences. The
individuals that I encounter grant me the opportunity to engage with them. A person can learn so
much from somebody in just a few short moments. For instance, one day as I was giving back to my
community by volunteering at a food drive, a man walked up and told me "if you learn anything
from me, it is go to school and graduate." These words resonated within me because not too many
people can admit that they have made mistakes in their lives and be humble enough to educate me
on the mistakes they made in their life.
As a young adult, I cherish the opportunities

The Impact of Community Service in the United States
Volunteerism is a path to responsible citizenship. Volunteering is a form of generous behavior, with
a goal of providing help to others, a group, an organization, a cause, or the community at large
without expectation of accolades or material reward (Musick, 2008, p 3). Volunteer work
encourages good citizenship. It builds trust with others and public institutions. Trusting people are
more likely to get involved in leadership positions or even politics. It gets individuals involved by
letting them meet a wider range of people, then learning more about local issues and legislation.
Volunteer work teaches civic skills, which can then be used in the political arena, and help
individuals become aware of social problems needing solutions (p 460–461).
On any given day, millions of Americans give their time and talents to benefit their communities
through volunteer service. Volunteering is so widespread in the United States of America that it can
be observed daily in almost every aspect of life. Around one–fifth of the American population, more
than sixty two million people, serve as volunteers each year according to the United States of
America government statistics. Volunteers contribute more than eight billion hours of service to
local and national groups, valued conservatively at $173 billion. Americans volunteer because they
recognize a need and are willing to take responsibility for meeting that need. They often
underestimate the impact of their work (Ellis, 2011, para. 2).

Reflection For My Citizenship Project
Reflection
For my citizenship project, I chose to volunteer at the Daniel Stowe Botanical garden. My goal was
to obtain 15 hours of community service by volunteering for educational assistant, horticulture crew,
and at the holiday at the garden events. To reach my goal, I had to figure out two major problems.
When to volunteer and my transportation. In order to make my project possible, I had to work with
my parents. By looking at an online calendar, we were able to schedule when I can volunteer and
my event. We decided that I could volunteer in the morning during winter break, and my parents
would drop and pick me up. Before my first day volunteering, i felt more nervous than excited. I
was completely clueless and worried that I wouldn't be able to do my job properly. I was afraid that
I might become loss, or that I might have signed up incorrectly. Most of all, I was afraid that I'll
would embarrass myself. What made it vene more nerve wrecking was that I had no friends or
family to volunteer with me, so I was hesitant with working with a stranger much older than me.
Despite my worries, I was excited to see the garden. I wanted to compare the botanical garden in
Las Vegas to the one I am currently volunteering at. I was especially enthusiastic about the arts and
crafts I will be creating on my first day.
I volunteered a total of __ days, each day brought a new experience and improved my
communication skills. I started off volunteering at the fairy fest. It was a

Mandatory Volunteering In The United States
The United States of America requiring adults between the ages of 18 to 30 to do mandatory
volunteering may sound like a good idea, but has some underlying flaws that may cause more
problems than solutions. Some of the problems that may occur would be people not being
enthusiastic about volunteering, work ethic, and how we would pay mandatory volunteers. If
something is being forced on to somebody most people will not find joy in doing it. Many people
volunteer for they joy of helping and to get a sense of being able to give back to their community.
Mandatory volunteering would take that away. Volunteering, if forced, would now seem like a job
and undermine its value, as stated in The Heart of Service, paragraph 2. People would be

The Benefits Of Volunteer Work In The Community
For many years volunteer work has been common throughout a multitude of communities. Whether
it's mandatory to complete school or the person wants to aid the community, countless advantages
have been received for volunteer work. Doing volunteer work can be beneficial towards the public
by publicizing awareness in a town along with becoming humble, however assisting the town can
earn students service hours to graduate high school or college also.
One of the benefits of volunteering is that what is trying to be resolved gains more awareness.
Consciousness and knowledge leads to a community understanding that change needs to transpire.
For example, if someone were to start planting trees with an organization, mass deforestation around
the world would be exposed to their family and friends. Since they inform them on what they're
doing, it creates a domino effect. Meaning that once one person informs someone on an action they
are taking a part of, they will want to do it too. This would lead to a chain of people spreading
awareness on an issue and how they are making a change. Posts of individuals volunteering would
also catch the eyes of others on popular social medias. If the influence of one person is enough to
affect dozens, those people's circle of friends would join in too creating more mass effect.
Eventually, most of the community will be educated on the matter and recognition would start to
spread till people outside of the community take part in theirs. Trees would be

Reflection On Interpersonal Communication
Reflection Paper I have taken Interpersonal Communication before during the summer 2016, but I
didn't pass it mainly because I wasn't as focused as I was in this class. Professor Castro just made it
fun. Her lectures and her stories made it interesting. Every Mondays and Wednesdays, I had three
classes. Interpersonal Communication would be my first class to start my day. Then two classes
after that. I ended up dropping those two classes. I was supposed to drop this class too but I didn't
because I wanted to learn more. I've been in a relationship with my girlfriend for almost a year and
one of the problems we had was listening. Sometimes she wouldn't listen to me or I just wouldn't
listen to her at all. The day we had a lecture about listening in class, that same morning, we got in an
argument about how I don't listen to her. I always listen to her but not when we argue. I usually
avoid her when we are about to start arguing. I found it funny how the professor somehow knew I
was in trouble with listening and she decided to have a lecture on listening. Unlike a history class or
a math class or even reading class, this class actually helped me outside of school. I also learned that
my professor is a volunteer basically everywhere. She participates in marches whenever she can.
Her age doesn't stop her from making the community better and standing up for what she believes
in. She is an inspiration. She asked the class to volunteer somewhere for three hours which was
pretty cool. I haven't had any class in college where volunteering out in the community was a
requirement. Because I had to volunteer for a grade in class, I am now volunteering for the resist
march in Los Angeles, June 11. I wouldn't be going out to volunteer for this event if it weren't for
this class. Knowing that my professor goes to protests and marches at her age, she is truly an
inspiration. I don't usually have time to go out to marches anymore but seeing that she still does, I'd
want to participate more in the community. Now only problem I had in this class was that I never
really had my own seat. I moved to different seats every time we had class. I felt very comfortable
sitting in the back, but the professor doesn't like having students

Should Community Service Be Mandatory Graduation...

  • 1. Should Community Service Be Mandatory Graduation... A continuous debate that is currently receiving much attention is whether community service should be a mandatory graduation requirement. Preparing students to effectively function in the real world is an important aspect of our education system. Today more than ever, there is an emphasis on having experience before beginning work. Most jobs are now focused on looking past your resume to see what you have given back to the community. Nevertheless, it is important that schools focus on preparing college students for the work force by mandating that they receive all of the necessary exposure and experience. Numerous schools across the country have mandated that in order for their students to graduate, they must complete a predetermined amount of community service. In Maryland, high school students are required to complete a minimum of 75 hours of service in order to graduate. However, this decision has resulted in a lot of mixed responses. Advocates of this decision stress that mandatory community service opens doors for students, while the opponents feel that it takes away valuable time from students who need to focus on their education. I believe that gaining experience outside of school is critical for future success in life. To ensure that students are prepared to transition smoothly from school to work, they need to be involved with the community while in school in order to build the leadership skills that are necessary to succeed. • 2. Responsibility Essay Responsibility Actuality College students are plagued by too much time on their hands. The average college stereotype is kids who spend too much money, drink too much booze, and party too hard. While this isn't true of all college students, as many work very hard to get good grades, get degrees, and have a life, it's true of enough of them that the stereotype does prove itself true quite often. This is the problem that Dave Eggers postulates a way of solving in his essay Serve Or Fail. Eggers' idea of making public service volunteering a mandatory part of your college education is brilliant and would no doubt aid in many areas of College student's lives. According to Eggers, "...students saw [...] hours in need of killing – as opposed to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There's the chance as well that the student, perhaps someone with an undecided major, will encounter something that will help them make their decision once and for all. Maybe, as Eggers says, "A college history major might learn something by tutoring a local middle school class that's studying the Underground Railroad. A connection would be forged; a potential career might be discovered" (584). But perhaps beyond that, having that sort of practical experience will aid students in other ways – preparing them for life beyond college in a way that none of them are currently. Eggers says, "...while colleges give their students the intellectual tools for life beyond campus, they largely ignore the part about how they might contribute to the world. That is, until the commencement speech, at which time all the "go forth's" and "be helpful's" happen" (585). So perhaps instituting a mandatory service for graduation program would do more than simply give the students something nice to go on their resumes – but perhaps it would also aid them in deciding on a major or even a career. In other words, it would help ensure their future once they're out of college and into the "real world." Such programs are already in place in many institutes of higher education, and even in high schools. And in 2003, Michael R. Veon, a Democrat and a member of Pennsylvania's House Of representatives, introduced a bill ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In conclusion, the respondents shows less passion and enthusiasm while volunteering compulsively. This, as a result, descends their active behaviors, as well as the sense of agency. This study demonstrates that the result of the research is not only solid in the communication level, but also in the science level, since is based on a scientific model called OLG model, which is used to find out the variable that leads to the individual differences in the process of mandatory

It is evident we are not all the same. Some of us have had to overcome greater obsticals than others, yet we are all living for a better something. I want to learn about the social issues I am unaware of that people have to deal with on a daily basis. The most memorable connection I have to a service is volunteering at my local FISH food bank. I have gone knocking door to door asking for cans for my local FISH food bank. I have also been able to work with a group of students like myself to create Christmas baskets for families. I have been able to help the FISH food bank plant gardens for the community. I, myself, have benefited from the FISH food bank during my childhood until now. • 6. A Interview On The Volunteer Program The volunteer program that the RCOC has constructed requires all the people that are interesting to go through a vetting process that all employees, board members, and other persons that working closely with the organization must go through. The potential volunteer must go through a background check, submit a drug screening, have or be able to obtain a fingerprint clearance card, and have a shot record that verifies that they have taken a TB test. The outreach center wanted prospective volunteers take part of these procedures to ensure that the individuals representing the organization have no criminal record and have some sense stability. Before a potential volunteer goes completes the vetting process, they have to submit an online volunteer application, so we can discover their areas of interest, their experience level, and decide if they would be a good fit for the RCOC organization. If we have applicant seems to meet the appropriate criteria they will be selected for an interview. The interview process will include questions as to why they want to volunteer at RCOC, what they want to get out of the experience, and giving them some scenarios that can occur to establish their problem solving skills. After they have successful completed the interview up they will be placed in one of four volunteer departments. • 7. Persuasive Essay On Why We Do People Volunteer The extinction of wildlife, the rising poverty levels, and the destruction left from natural disasters can all be greatly decreased if we took some time out of our day and volunteered to make a positive difference in the world. When we volunteer, we not only give back to our community, but to ourselves. We can receive a sense of accomplishment by doing the simplest of deeds while impacting someone else's life for the better. When we volunteer, we can strengthen our community, make a difference for the environment, and lastly, we can improve our own lives. Volunteers around the world volunteer for one reason: to help. When we decide to volunteer, we're doing this because we want to improve the lives of the fellow people and animals within our community. We want to see a change, and in order to do so, we need to be the change. We need to have the willpower and dedication to stick with something and accomplish our goals. According to UC San Diego, one of the world's leading public research universities, "The estimated value of a volunteer's time in California is $26.87 per hour." What this means is that we can actually help the community economically. With the time that we spend volunteering, we can actually be working and earning that money, but instead we are giving back to the community. Volunteering can be beneficial on many levels, but only if a person is willing to go the extra mile and put in the work. Even if a handful of people just went to the soup kitchen, animal ... In the United States there is a great amount of volunteers for many volunteering programs. The amount of volunteers increase through the years for different causes. There are volunteers for schools, churches, sport clubs, and even more. Not only do Americans volunteer but also make donations. Americans do this sincerely from heart, not because it's a law. • 10. The Importance of Volunteering: College Students Should... Nowadays, it is very difficult to get a job without a College Diploma. Our ever–increasing demands on student's academic performances have insured well–educated adults, but what we have failed to focus on is the vital component of volunteerism as an integral part of rearing well–rounded adults. College students should be required to complete a year of community service/volunteer work before they can graduate, in order to create mature and caring adults and versatile future leaders. By mandating all College students across the United States of America to add another year to their studies and use this year for community service/volunteer work only, we will be able to increase their knowledge of community need, civic responsibility, and allow ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The most recent generations have been labeled as having an entitlement mentality, because these young adults have a tendency of being self focused and absorbed. Nevertheless, the common misconception linked to graduating College students is that they are well–rounded adults, who have done their time and are ready and able to enter the working force and go on with their lives. The fact of the matter is that not all recent college students are mature and knowledgeable on their community and the world at large. "Teens who volunteer increase their knowledge of the world and the problems that face it" ("Youths"). This quote is not only applicable to teens, but college students as well; unfortunately, college students become isolated from the rest of the world while they are in their course of study and do not make time to give back to the community that helped them become who they are. In my five years of active volunteer work with multiple non–profit organizations, I have seen firsthand the lack of attendance of my peers in times of great community need and support from its members. Although it has become more complicated to find time to give back to the community, with a full–time school and work schedule, there is always spare time to give back. The rapidly growing demand for volunteers in communities all across America is increasing and it is everyone's duty, especially college students, to pay their dues to the ... • 11. Persuasive Essay About Community Service As an 18–year–old tennager, I was forced by my parents to participate a summer volunteer program in my freshman year. Even though I felt that I was a victim of "tyranny" in the beginning, I realized that I actually enjoyed the process of helping people in the middle of the program. Now, I participate that program every year as an active member, and I have gained the personal enrichment that I am unable to learn from other sources such as math club or SAT preparatory class. There is no doubt that community service can bring essential benefits in helping students develop their moral value and future interest, and it should be mandatory because some students attempt to utilize community service as a tool for their own profit without the school supervision. Volunteerism enables students to gain the moral lesson that is vital to their life and develop their future interest. According to source 2, "community service teaches us through experience – about the relationship between empathy and responsibility, about what it takes to be part of a community, in essence, about human being". While students are helping their community, they learn the crucial moral lessons in the most direct and impressive way. Through an actual experience of volunteering, students are reminded that it is their responsibility to serve for their community because they are a part of it. • 12. Volunteering In High Schools J.J. Watt, an American football defensive end for the Houston Texans, once said, "My mom taught me from a young age to give back and volunteer any chance you get." (Brainyquote). Despite gaining all the fame and money from the NFL (National Football League), the defensive end believes in the power and the potential of volunteering by altruistically helping out Hurricane Harvey victims with necessary supplies such as water, food, and other basic needs (USA Today). There certainly has to be a sort of flare that ignites the heart of a volunteer in order to selflessly aid others, as exemplified by Watt. Yet, that aspect of community service is presently vague among many high schools. Currently, many high schools require students to volunteer for a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Unfortunately one major question arises from this obligation. Does mandatory volunteering truly invoke the spirit of volunteering? Selective colleges, in general, are more stringent than they were in the past by the recruiting process. In fact, the admission committees of these respective colleges accurately discern inadequate applications from powerful ones, especially in relationship to the commitment level of community service. Passion for community service is a vital indicator for recruiting. They desire students who strongly dedicate themselves to volunteer with something that coincides with their interests or major. However, "mandatory volunteering" generates a belief that community service is a hindrance and a deliberate waste of time towards obtaining a diploma. The embodiment of community service diminishes as these educational institutions continue to exercise their power to regulate civic engagement. Thus, selective colleges are likely to identify and reject those who only fulfill the negative aspects of mandatory ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 13. How Does Volunteering Teach You Empathy? Throughout history, humans have been known to be egocentric. For example, vast greedy empires would often overtake other trifling empires just to gain what they had even if they didn 't need it. While too many Americans are selfish and disconnected from their communities, those who volunteer, however, learn empathy, understand other cultures, develop a positive work ethic and ultimately build a solid personal character. Who wouldn 't desire those attributes? If you had any type of sense, you would realize how sedulous it is to gain those traits through doing one simple thing......volunteering. Volunteering will teach you traits that can lead to phenomenal contributions for the world such as empathy. How does volunteering teach you empathy? Empathy is the capacity to understand or feel what another person is experiencing from within another's frame of reference; the capacity to place oneself in another 's position. It's what makes a person want to make a difference, make the world a superior place and while you can discuss this matter at great lengths, and read countless testimonies about it, the most powerful way to teach empathy is by example.Volunteering causes you to become altruistic and reminds you to not judge someone since you haven 't walked a mile in their shoes. Teaching empathy is literally the building blocks to raising a benefactor, a good person, to creating positive change and to being buoyant on the inside. You also learn to ... The Nepal Volunteers Council In July and August of 2012, I volunteered with the Nepal Volunteers Council1 for a month in Kathmandu, Nepal, and I found that despite the NVC hired many international volunteers who contribute a considerable amount of money to the organization, it did not disclose to any volunteer its source of funding or where and how much was the money spent. Later on, I was informed that there was actually a board which provides the major funding for the NVC, implying that the organization was not as responsible for the international volunteers as I expected. However, international volunteers are one of the most important stake holders in the perspective of this organization and a transparent environment is important for the sustainability of the NVC in terms of the recruitment of volunteers. The Issue Nepal Volunteers Council (NVC) is a non–profit organization affiliated to the Social Welfare Council and it offers volunteer, internship programs. The objective of the NVC is to continue the process of sustainable development and uplifting the life standard of the poor and the marginalized community through national and international volunteer enlistment. To volunteer with NVC, each volunteer needs to pay a not refundable $100 application fee at the beginning of the applying process, and the program fee is $195 for the first week and $75 for every additional week. • 15. Why Volunteering Important? Edward "Ted" Kennedy, a former senior United States Senator from Massachusetts, once said, "Volunteer work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dreams shall never die." (Kennedy, Ted) Merriam Webster defines "volunteerism" as the act or practice of doing volunteer work in community service. (Webster, Merriam) Not only do you get to feel good about yourself, but also you get the satisfaction of incorporating service into the lives of people and making a difference in your community. With busy lives, it can be hard to find time to volunteer, however the benefits of volunteering are enormous to you and your community. A person who volunteers benefits themselves because they get to see how their contribution has made a difference. This experience contributes to personal development. The selfless act of volunteering provides a spiritual enhancement as well. If people never help each other and only care about themselves, the world becomes a crueler, sadder place, but when we volunteer our time or efforts, we help make our planet a better, happier, cleaner, and safer home where people work together to make life easier for all. I first started volunteering when I entered high school. It was a requirement at my school to finish high school with 80 hours or more. I had just moved to Dallas, Texas and I was very shy and quite. • 16. Synthesis Essay: Why Nonmilitary Needs The United States is a country of volunteers. In 2002–2003, 64 million Americans (28.8 percent of those 16 and older) donated 52 hours a year, the equivalent of more than one full work week, to building shelters, coaching Little League, caring for the elderly, teaching literacy, and countless other community–minded pursuits. Statistics show in Source F that "groups mandatory and nonvolunteers – were less likely to volunteer 8 years after high school than persons who strongly encouraged to volunteer or did it for strictly voluntary reason (43 percent)." Military need is not logically equivalent to nonmilitary need, mostly because we fulfill nonmilitary needs through the normal operations of government. When the State identifies work to be done for the common good, it taxes citizens and directs its employees to perform that work. The State might also hire contractors to complete the work. This is the way we build highways and libraries. If the State performs these basic functions poorly, it fails in its ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 17. Apathy Is A Severe Problem Essay British Abolitionist William Wilberforce once said, "You may choose to look the other way but you can never say again that you did not know". In contemporary Canadian society today, apathy is a severe problem. Canadians may be aware that there are people in the world who are starving, homeless and diseased, but don't do anything themselves to help end global suffering. Often, this is because of a lack of understanding and experience. It is difficult for Canadians to relate to people they do not know exist or see for themselves, even if they are aware that people around them might be suffering. Others might believe that even if they did try to help the underprivileged, that it wouldn't be enough to cause a lasting effect. In experiencing the culture and the lives of marginalized groups of people, and by choosing to become involved in their lives, I have learned through my volunteer experience, that there is something everyone can do to help someone else who is in–need. I will begin this essay by telling about myself and my volunteer experience. Second, I will address my privilege and how my volunteer experience has changed my perception of it. Third, I will explain my assumptions on North American care homes at the beginning of my volunteer experience and on whether or not my assumptions were justifiable in the end. Finally, I will state how my volunteer work at the Sherbrooke Community Centre has effected my views on Canadian society and the underprivileged in society. Not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They will be assigned a discussion table, a community group number, and a poverty simulation table number. The day is spit up in half, where for the first half of the students will go to the community site and the other will go through the poverty simulation. After both are done, the group will switch. Going out to volunteer in work is to help out the community. Helping out the community will keep it healthy from the people littering. Something that is inclined to do without getting a reward back. The benefits of volunteer work are gaining work experience, getting to unify, and volunteer to become a role model. One advantage of volunteer work is that it will help a person gain experience how it will be to go work in an authentic job and would not have in a job. In a volunteer work majority of the people give their time for a great cause, it can avail in the present when going to apply for a job, and there for the supervisor can accommodate as a reference when applying for jobs. Given these points, volunteering allows people to provide new skills that in the long run everyone will once need provide in a future job. • 21. Short Term Volunteer Trips ( 1-3 Days ) Essay There are numerous aspects of voluntourism that are positive in nature. For example, short–term volunteer trips (1–3 weeks) can be quite beneficial in the case of dealing with the aftermath of a natural disaster. In the case of a serious catastrophe like that, it can take years to rebuild the community that it occurred in. With a continuous stream of fresh volunteer recruits, the momentum will remain at a constant pace. A short–term time frame for this type of scenario will result in more efficient progress being made. On another topic, volunteers have been proven, through extensive research on the subject, to be able to provide locals with some things that very few other aid workers can. The volunteers can be an effective link between the locals of the community and the humanitarian organizations. As an example, they can help locals fill out the forms required to apply for funding for certain projects. Volunteers can also help the locals understand ways in which they can effectively communicate with their government, and potentially receive more aid from them. Voluntourism agencies often emphasize the emotional connections that tourists can make with the locals, but rarely speak about this kind of connection that I have just mentioned. In other words, tourists can be a great resource for the locals, and that is a very positive aspect of the voluntourism industry. Is happiness something we can create or something that appears to us when we need it most? I feel that happiness is something that is unique to each person. What fills me with inner joy might not for others and vice versa. Happiness is subjective, but one thing I think everyone will find is that a part of their happiness is found in growing as a person. Life begins at the end of your comfort zone and maybe happiness is found there too! For me, happiness is best achieved when I am growing as a person. Working through obstacles that have come up in my path, expanding my horizons through meeting new people, or learning something new in a class. I have come to see that when I push myself out of my comfort zone (physically or emotionally), this is where I find happiness. Reaching the edge of your comfort zone can be done through many things. One example of when I have felt truly happy is during travels. This can be travels to another state or travel in other countries. When one are traveling, there is constant growth. There are different obstacles that result from each new adventure. Plans for travel can be made, but in my experience, travel never goes according to the plan and that is its beauty. • 24. The Benefits Of Volunteer Work And Community Service According to Webster Merriam, the terms volunteer and volunteering are defined as "a person who voluntarily [proceeding from the will or from one's own choice or consent or unconstrained by interference] undertakes or expresses a willingness to undertake a service" and defines required or requirement as "to demand as necessary or essential; :to impose a compulsion or command on; to claim or ask for by right and authority" (Webster Merriam n.p.). The two contrasting aforementioned definitions are included in the strong debate on whether schools and student organizations should have the ability to require a certain amount of time each term (such as trimesters or trimesters) taking part in volunteer work and community service. Establishing volunteer work as a requirement would make it involuntary, in which a student will not fully understand the benefits that volunteer work can bring. Volunteerism can bring new friendships, feelings of accomplishment and motivation, kindness and tenderness, and also more consideration for others. If service work is in the form of a "course" assignment, does a student completing volunteerism achieve the feeling(s) of accomplishment––and what it brings––or moreso a grade in the grade book? Volunteerism can show good citizenship and create compassion; however, by having volunteer work forced upon student it forces compassion, making it an unreal and false experience of what service work can actually bring someone. People choosing to volunteer for events or support do so in the thoughts of others; volunteerism is to be completed without getting anything in return except for a feeling of accomplishment that pushes to do more to help his/her community. When volunteer work is changed to mandatory, a student is not focusing on helping others, he/she is more focus on gaining points to earn a certain grade in a class. Service work should not be abused to form students into better citizens with more kindness; a student should want to be a compassionate citizen of their community on their own, the idea should already be formed. Instead of instructing students to take part in service work, encourage students to try being more active in the community. By encouraging students to help others ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 26. I Am A Community Service Introduction It is often joked that beginning college is like re–entering the womb. Similar to the warm, nurturing space that was home to us for the last nine months before birth, higher education aims to prepare us for life outside, in the world. Unfortunately, college also earns this association due to what some, perhaps unfairly, dub its "coddling nature," and the tendency of students to use their schools as a place to hide from the harsher realities of the adult world. The uncomfortable truth appears to be that these detractors are right. For many students attending classes and work, it is far too easy to lose oneself in one, the other or both. The rare free time that's left over? A temptation to spend it on oneself usually wins out. As a consequence, students lose much of the insight they might gain from spending more time interacting directly with the society in which they live. They lose touch. I firmly feel performing community service enables one to remain grounded in purpose and place in one's world, while working toward one's professional degree. This essay, an extended look at the nature and benefits of service to one's community, will tackle its subject in four parts: the definition of community service (what is it, really?), the motivation and goals behind community service (why do it?), questions of area and location (how and where can I do it?), and, finally, the impact of community service (how does it change things?). • 29. Volunteering In College Winston Churchill once stated, "We make a living by what we do, but we make a life by what we give." According to this great leader, making money is not the only basis for happiness; he feels that one must also give of one's time in order to live a more fulfilling life. Following this ideology, volunteering in one's community would be a means to accomplish a more rewarding existence. This idea has sparked a debate about whether students should be required to volunteer in order to gain their diplomas. Requiring volunteer hours to graduate should not be considered because being made to help others could lead to apathy, there is not a course of study for volunteering, and volunteering could affect the monetary situation for some students. First and foremost, forced volunteerism for high school seniors may lead to a greater apathy toward the needs of others. When students are made to give of their time, they may show their resentment by performing poorly. For instance, last fall I worked at a soup kitchen. The hope is that this volunteer work will give students a better sense of civic duty, and thus, be a worthy addition to college curriculums. However, this idea relies on the faulty premise that if one is forced to volunteer that one will derive the same benefits as someone who does it out of their own desire to help. However, a more detailed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, to a company their time is money. If a company is forced to give its time and resources to volunteer, it might as well give money instead. That money, in the form of taxes, is already paid by both companies and individuals to the government. That money, in turn, should be used to help communities when needed. If communities need extra help, the answer is increasing taxes to provide that extra help. Forcing college students to provide that help directly ignores the efficiencies gained from specialization. A college student, who isn't even studying whatever field is needed, would be able to help more by working in their actual field for money, and then giving that money to a specialist, via the government, to provide the direct help. The only problem with that arrangement is that it doesn't provide the positive feelings that directly helping would. However, gaining a positive sense of accomplishment at the expense of providing less efficient help is a purely selfish motivation. In the case of labor being needed that almost anyone could do, there is an even greater gain in having the public at large finance the work instead of doing it directly. • 36. The Impact of Community Service in the United States Volunteerism is a path to responsible citizenship. Volunteering is a form of generous behavior, with a goal of providing help to others, a group, an organization, a cause, or the community at large without expectation of accolades or material reward (Musick, 2008, p 3). Volunteer work encourages good citizenship. It builds trust with others and public institutions. Trusting people are more likely to get involved in leadership positions or even politics. It gets individuals involved by letting them meet a wider range of people, then learning more about local issues and legislation. Volunteer work teaches civic skills, which can then be used in the political arena, and help individuals become aware of social problems needing solutions (p 460–461). On any given day, millions of Americans give their time and talents to benefit their communities through volunteer service. Volunteering is so widespread in the United States of America that it can be observed daily in almost every aspect of life. Around one–fifth of the American population, more than sixty two million people, serve as volunteers each year according to the United States of America government statistics. Volunteers contribute more than eight billion hours of service to local and national groups, valued conservatively at $173 billion. Americans volunteer because they recognize a need and are willing to take responsibility for meeting that need. They often underestimate the impact of their work (Ellis, 2011, para. 2). ... Mandatory Volunteering In The United States The United States of America requiring adults between the ages of 18 to 30 to do mandatory volunteering may sound like a good idea, but has some underlying flaws that may cause more problems than solutions. Some of the problems that may occur would be people not being enthusiastic about volunteering, work ethic, and how we would pay mandatory volunteers. If something is being forced on to somebody most people will not find joy in doing it. Many people volunteer for they joy of helping and to get a sense of being able to give back to their community. Mandatory volunteering would take that away. Volunteering, if forced, would now seem like a job and undermine its value, as stated in The Heart of Service, paragraph 2. People would be ... • 39. The Benefits Of Volunteer Work In The Community For many years volunteer work has been common throughout a multitude of communities. Whether it's mandatory to complete school or the person wants to aid the community, countless advantages have been received for volunteer work. Doing volunteer work can be beneficial towards the public by publicizing awareness in a town along with becoming humble, however assisting the town can earn students service hours to graduate high school or college also. One of the benefits of volunteering is that what is trying to be resolved gains more awareness. Consciousness and knowledge leads to a community understanding that change needs to transpire. For example, if someone were to start planting trees with an organization, mass deforestation around the world would be exposed to their family and friends. Since they inform them on what they're doing, it creates a domino effect. Meaning that once one person informs someone on an action they are taking a part of, they will want to do it too. This would lead to a chain of people spreading awareness on an issue and how they are making a change. Posts of individuals volunteering would also catch the eyes of others on popular social medias. If the influence of one person is enough to affect dozens, those people's circle of friends would join in too creating more mass effect. Eventually, most of the community will be educated on the matter and recognition would start to spread till people outside of the community take part in theirs. Trees would be ... • 40. Reflection On Interpersonal Communication Reflection Paper I have taken Interpersonal Communication before during the summer 2016, but I didn't pass it mainly because I wasn't as focused as I was in this class. Professor Castro just made it fun. Her lectures and her stories made it interesting. Every Mondays and Wednesdays, I had three classes. Interpersonal Communication would be my first class to start my day. Then two classes after that. I ended up dropping those two classes. I was supposed to drop this class too but I didn't because I wanted to learn more. I've been in a relationship with my girlfriend for almost a year and one of the problems we had was listening. Sometimes she wouldn't listen to me or I just wouldn't listen to her at all. The day we had a lecture about listening in class, that same morning, we got in an argument about how I don't listen to her. I always listen to her but not when we argue. I usually avoid her when we are about to start arguing. I found it funny how the professor somehow knew I was in trouble with listening and she decided to have a lecture on listening. Unlike a history class or a math class or even reading class, this class actually helped me outside of school. I also learned that my professor is a volunteer basically everywhere. She participates in marches whenever she can. Her age doesn't stop her from making the community better and standing up for what she believes in. She is an inspiration. She asked the class to volunteer somewhere for three hours which was pretty cool. I haven't had any class in college where volunteering out in the community was a requirement. Because I had to volunteer for a grade in class, I am now volunteering for the resist march in Los Angeles, June 11. I wouldn't be going out to volunteer for this event if it weren't for this class. Knowing that my professor goes to protests and marches at her age, she is truly an inspiration. I don't usually have time to go out to marches anymore but seeing that she still does, I'd want to participate more in the community. Now only problem I had in this class was that I never really had my own seat. I moved to different seats every time we had class. I felt very comfortable sitting in the back, but the professor doesn't like having students ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
