News Media Bias Case Study
Objectivity has become a defining component of the news media. Although this request is quite precarious given the business model of companies that
disseminate news, objectivity remains a professional standard of journalism and reporting that the public is highly aware of. Identifying and analyzing
media bias is an extremely complex task that not many people engage in. The public often criticizes the news media for trying to advance certain
viewpoints or being advocates of political positions. In other words, many people wish the news media was less biased and more objective.
Evaluating four news sources, CBS This Morning, ABC7 News, NBC News, and CNN on their coverage of the implementation of a curfew in
Baltimore following the Baltimore protests, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Perhaps the chosen topic didn't elicit itself to ideological stances as a topic regarding a 2016 presidential candidate would have. Regardless of
ideological bias, certain news frames were present that helped to categorize protesters as either overwhelmingly violent or peaceful. While each
news source mentioned the looting and violence that erupted directly after Gray's funeral on Monday, only two sources focused on the peaceful
protests that occurred on Tuesday. The curfew was interpreted as a conflict and standoff by ABC7 News and CNN News, but also as an event
with minor dissidence by CBS This Morning and NBC News. The coverage of the Baltimore curfew varied in its sensationalism of conflict and
violence, but not ideologically. Why do so many Americans believe that their news sources contain ideological bias? As mentioned in the
explanation of President Obama's quote in the analysis of the CNN News article, "studies of hostile media effect have found that individuals who
have strong opinions about an issue or close ties to a social group (i.e., partisans) that is the focus of a controversy will be highly unlikely to perceive
any story about that issue or group as credible" (Arpan & Peterson 311). While this was not the case with ideological bias in these four news sources, the

Why is important to study the media, rather than simply...
The media is a dynamic entity inherent in society that is both powerful and important. It demonstrates this by playing a vital role in the development of
a person 's perspective on political, economic and socio–cultural issues. This consequently helps to shape individuals ' viewpoints of the world and
define their lives through the interpretation of media texts. (Newman, 2004). Bazalgette supported Newman 's point by stating "Media studies open up
your understanding of how things work, how people become informed – or misinformed – and how the myths and ideologies that govern all our lives
are created and sustained." (Bazalgette, 2000, pp.14). Thus, the focus of this essay will be on these aspects; how the theory of ideology and ... Show

The media messages are no longer fixated with only one prevailing meaning imposed on by the authoritative figures. (Schirato & Yell, 2000). Now, not
only are there multiple angles to analyze and interpret media texts, the sheer volume of different messages transmitted by media forms is astounding.
Perhaps even more crucial to this whole analysis is that the public of today has become more knowledgeable, informed and engaging in participation.
They are genuinely interested in what is portrayed before them and may even have a personal stake in the many issues which the media disseminates.
People have gotten more independent and complex. Consequently, they become more analytical.
To make sense of the meaning of the world portrayed to the audience through the media, there needs to be an engagement in an active work of
decoding or interpretation, rather than a passive process of purely receiving and consuming media messages. (Morley, 1992). As quoted from Alan
McKee;" When we perform textual analysis on a text, we make an educated guess at some of the mostly likely interpretations that might be made of
that text." (McKee, 2001,pp.140). Textual analysis serves as a critical approach to ignite comprehension of media texts and to uncover possible
interpretation of reality, thereby allowing the construction of

A nation is a group of people who share common history, culture, language and ethnic origin often possessing or seeking its own government. National

Through searching different books, articles and documentaries on internet and media resources it can be deduced that National Identity is a subject
that is mostly dealt indirectly by Media. A huge amount of literature and media projects are available all around the world on the subject but it
addresses only specific regions and characteristics of national identity. For example rather than defining what National Identity itself is, most of the
work is done about National language, National Heroes and National Heritage etc. National identity is a vast subject which directly or indirectly
touches huge number of variegated subjects.
National Television plays the major role in developing the sense of National Identity. PTV as national service channel inPakistan has produced a large
number of programmes in various formats which directly and indirectly address the importance of National identity. Patriotic songs presented by PTV
focus various emblems of National identity eg. Qauid e Azam, Tehreek e Insaaf, Pakistani Flag, Landmarks and Cities etc.

Studies of Social Media and its Effects on Adolescent’s...
Throughout the years, technology has evolved into something people cannot live without. Mixed in with all of the improvements, social media has
become a major asset in the lives of people. Social media can include websites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, but can also include video
games and magazines. However, social media is not always genuine. In the mindset of adolescents, these medias help to create unrealistic ideas of
who they are and who they should be. As if going through puberty isn't difficult enough, teenagers are raised to face these phony thoughts everyday.
One of the top problems that boys and girls experience is the way they view their body; commonly referred to as "body image." Our media–saturated
world provides many... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is said that it is easier to communicate with an individual through technology than it is to communicate face–to–face. These negative comments are a
major factor when it comes to negative self–esteem. Many websites are currently being sponsored by hundreds of advertisements. They are primarily
aimed to emphasize the importance of being attractive. Sexually objectified images of girls and women, along with boys and men in advertisements,
are most likely to appear in magazines, video games and on television. There is a video that came out in early 2014 that demonstrated what various
food advertisements would look like if the females were switched out with males. The results were awkward and did not display the full potential the
companies were originally trying to achieve. This is an example of advertisements primarily aimed to "please the public" rather than exhibiting a
realistic setting. With the help of editing software, including the highly popular Adobe Photoshop, these programs assist in airbrushing and "fixing"
models. Thus, resulting in adolescents wanting to look like what they see in the media. Media contributes to the establishment of disordered eating and
body dissatisfaction. Long–term exposure of media during early childhood lays the foundation for the negative effects of media during adolescence.
Magazine reading, social comparisons, and critical body image processing are important predictors of body image and eating disturbances for

Portrayal Of Women In Media Literacy
LITERATURE REVIEW
The well known adage which states that "If a woman is educated, the whole family gets educated", is very appropriate for Media Literacy. Poverty,
gender discrepancies, illiteracy and disconnectivity have left women all over the world helpless when it comes to getting information. Sadly,
historically across the globe such discrepancies are not confined to a specific culture, region, country or status. But one thing that has been observed is
that this is more obvious in the rural and backward areas (Johnson. N,2013). It is essential that women be harnessed to use technology and thereby
included in the big picture of media literacy. Having technology and not being able to use it, is as good as not having it. Developing media skills is
equally essential. When women citizens become critical consumers of information, then they would most definitely contribute to public discourse
effectively. Another reason is that in developing media skills, women citizens can protect themselves and others from harmful content pushed mainly
by new information and communication technologies.
Portrayal of Women in Media
How women are portrayed or represented in media is also important. Media can play a significant role in sensitizing the society about gender issues.
But, before that, the media itself needs to be sensitized in covering women issues. The distribution of power between the two sexes both physical and
economic is unequal, leading to discrimination against women.

12. Wordpress Tutorial posting options
Welcome to our WordPress lesson. So with this Knowledge bit, we are going to talk about how easy it is to add media to a post and how to actually
finalize a post so in this lesson we are going to talk about setting up post.
Customize Permalink
We have also got an option here to customize our permalinks where we might want to actually create a really custom URL's, so 'coolurlhere'. so
that's exactly what I wanted if I want to have a 'coolurlhere' so this can be the actual link of the page and really think about WordPress is really a lot
of cool stuff because its dated base driven content it's not actually connected to these URL's so you can change these and if you don't like it, you can
actually ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another really cool feature we can create galleries to better organize our images.
[Screenshot5]
So we have one more thing we are able to actually link it to a custom URL, we can link it to the media file or we can just leave it without a link so
that can all be done right here Custom URL all we had in that link there.
[Screenshot6]
And here you have those size options that we looked at earlier and we have got the ability for thumbnail, medium–large and as you can see its updated
the dimensions so that the width there is always going to be that max width of 300 but the height is the one that's going to change so we don't have
disproportionate images because if we uploaded an image and if we wanted a square 300x300 we can't do that with an image of size 1200x630.
[Screenshot7]
So keep that in mind and I am just going to leave it as a medium by default because this is probably the best way to go when I am adding it to my
page. And now I have to do insert post and there it gets inserted, I see that I have got the caption when I go to the actual HTML it's created all of that
HTML so caption ID it's giving some mega information there and it's also got a class so size medium so that's where it's getting that max medium of
300. [Screenshot8]
So this is a really good option with these captions and this mega information captions are good for screen readers and so on and a lot of themes and
templates really do take advantage of what's available in this

Participatory Culture Paper
It's no secret that people are engaging more and more with the Internet and social media everyday. A simple Google search can lead you to various
discussion forums, Tumblr blogs, and a plethora of hash–tagged Tweets. The Internet is an interactive medium, and as users of that medium, we have
access to innumerable amounts of data and information previous generations could only dream of. With the rise of an interactive, communicative
platform, people and companies can send and receive messages instantaneously. Take the phenomenon of live tweeting for example: audience members
(particularly fans) watching a television show in real time can provide instant feedback of their responses, and using particular hashtags, can have their

392). In other words, people are acting as "prosumers," a term coined by Alvin Toffler, by consuming and producing media texts of their own (Toffler,
1989). The Internet provides a space where this participatory culture can thrive. Discussion–based forums and boards are especially active places where
fans can interact. According to Jenkins, "message boards and forums become knowledge communities that structure and organize the fans' knowledge
about a particular text" (Booth, 2010, pp. 37–38). From these interactive online hubs, fans can work together to create distinct meanings unique to their
fan culture and themselves, according to media scholar Paul Booth: "Dialogue through forums and listservs create meaning for the members of the
community separated from the meaning contained (or read) within the extant media object" (Booth, 2010, pp. 37–38). Discussion boards and forums
aren't the only places where this type of interaction occurs; blogs are another place where fans can engage in this participatory culture. Blogs, and more
importantly, their ability to comment and provide feedback are integral to the interactivity and productivity of online fandom. According to Booth,
"Comments become a way for the blog to elicit feedback and participation by members of a community." This ability to provide instantaneous feedback
fulfills the desire of instant gratification and fosters the ability to communicate more effectively as a collective

Literature Review This paper will examine relevant literature that can be applied to the wide–ranging Twitter responses to Justin Bieber's release of
Purpose: The Movement. The literature review will provide an overview of parasocial interaction theory, celebrity worship, and the involvement of
social media in these areas. Following the review of relevant literature will be a list of research questions to guide future study in this field. Parasocial
Interaction Parasocial interaction (PSI) is a term used to describe the one–sided relationships that come about between media users and media
personalities. Parasocial Interaction Theory has been used for many years as a method to understand the ways in which individuals become attached
to media personae. This kind of interaction was first studied in 1956 by Horton and Wohl. This theory may also serve to offer some explanations to
why some media consumers behave the way they do online. Horton and Wohl (1956) concluded from their study that audiences develop a sort of
attachment as they continually observe media personalities. In other words, the more exposure to the media figure, the stronger the parasocial
relationship. This concept was consistent with findings from a separate study conducted by Perse and Rubin (1989). In their research, Perse and Rubin
found that the perceived intimacy in these relationships was greater with increased interaction. Perse and Rubin also established that parasocial
relationships can be

Case Study: B. Gertz In The Social Media Era
B. Gertz in the Social Media Era When the Gertz court made its decision, it did so under a conception of the media as it was in 1974. At the time, the
media was limited to only print and broadcast platforms, frequently part of huge conglomerate news corporations. The idea of the "citizen journalist" or
even the Internet did not even enter into the Court's consideration. Instead, the court grounded its decision to include access to media as one of the
factors included in the public figure test for the purpose of protecting the reputation of the private individual. That purpose still resonates today, despite
the significant changes in the composition of the media. Presently, the Internet is the primary source of news for millions of people,... Show more

In order to rebut the statements made against him/her, he/she would have the ability to access a large audience by either; holding a press conference,
issuing a statement to the press, making a public statement, or otherwise responding to the defamations. Of course, he/she could also bring a
defamation claim against the speaker in court, but he/she would then have to prove actual malice. The initial defamatory statements and the subsequent
rebuttal, given by a well–known public figure, would garner the attention of similar audiences. It is due to this attention that the Court rightly
included this element in the public figure test; lawsuits brought by those who have been defamed may only be seen as an undesirable alternative
means for redress if they are capable of responding to the defamatory remarks outside of court, and are able to mitigate the damages caused by the
statements by doing so. The Supreme Court's position in Gertz, keeping in mind this same archetypal defamation claim, should be understood as
aiming to bolster public speech, debate, and the contribution of new ideas into the marketplace of ideas and further striving to avoid the chilling of
any type of speech that could be the result of self–censorship. The Court wanted to

A Critical Study of Media Reaction to September 11 Essay...
September 11, 2001: A DAY OF INFAMY. So it was vehemently proclaimed in Time MagazineВ№s special issue dedicated to one of the most tragic
events in American History and arguably one of the most brutal acts of terrorism to date. America, in the spasms of a few hours, has become a changed
country. Perhaps in an attempt to understand this change and come to grips with the ensuing crisis, more and more people are turning to the media for
answers. Now more than ever, the media, namely television, radio, newspapers, and the internet, have become the most powerful tools in disseminating
information relevant to this event. This is a truth we cannot escape.
It would of course be naГЇve to say that this information is always reliable ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, the decoded message is perhaps that this is a constant reminder that things have changed, even things we used to think were permanent. In
this case, the audience is probably reading the message critically (negotiated code) or oppositionally (oppositional code) depending on his/her
background. In other words, different audiences will decode and interpret differently, depending on factors such as age, gender, education level,
religion, and political affiliation.
Most believe that things have indeed changed everything from national security to conducting daily business for some. What is certain is that this
change has been further exasperated by the histeria created mostly through the media. Take for example the seemingly endless anthrax stories. The
almost constant coverage of anthrax cases has led the public to believe that new cases are constantly sprouting in every corner of the nation. This
obsession over anthrax has resulted in part from the uncertainty about future attacks and how we will be affected. Anthrax, now a usual topic in
conversations, has no doubt captured public and media attention to an extraordinary degree. More than three in four Americans say they are concerned
about anthrax, and four in 10 are exercising caution when opening their mail, according to an ABCNEWS/Washington Post poll. The title of a story on
anthrax reads,

Why Is It Important to Study the Media, Rather Than Simply...
Everyday we encounter the media in some form. It could be waking up to the sound of the radio, or passing billboards in the streets or simply just
watching television. They are a lot of different forms of media, for example, verbal or written media, visual media and aural media. Examples of media
would include newspapers, magazines, film, radio, television, billboard advertisements as well as the internet. Media studies came about because of
the developments in mass communication and it provokes the generation of exigent questions about what we think we know as well how we came
about knowing it. There are always changes in the media and the term "media" refers to the many ways of physically forming meanings as well and

Since there is no single interpretation of reality, it is crucial to understand how media texts are used in order to make sense of the world we live in. We
have to try to understand the elements of language and culture, the form and context that shape the meanings that are available to us. The text is likely
to be interpreted through genre (the different codes producers and audiences communicated with) and context, which are divide into 3 levels : The rest
of the text, the genre of the text, the winder public context in which a text is circulated (McKee, 2001).
It is also important to study the media as the media industries now rely more on freelancers and because of the vast advancement in other
industries, freelance work has become more in demand and it is a flexible career and this appeals more to people today. Studying the media is also
a very good way to understand the different jobs in the media industries and how these works are changing. The film and broadcasting industries
have been predicted to face a shortage of skills it the time to come and therefore will be in need of people who are literate about the media.
However, getting a career is not only the importance of doing media studies. Some point in our lives we would have to engage with the media in
some form, not just as a consumer or audience but perhaps a producer. Media studies is a course that is rather challenging and it will somehow make a

The Troika, made up of the International Monetary Fund, European Commissions and the European Central Bank have the most to lose in this debt
crisis as they own 78% of Greek debt. With so much to lose we have seen European "bailout" agreements that mostly front the Greek government
more money coupled with crippling austerity in an effort to "rebuild" the economy. Austerity discourages growth as it cuts the spending of the
government who is by far the biggest spender in the economy. The effects of austerity can be devastating, but the true effects are often hidden beneath
the messages we get from mainstream news sources. The stereotype of the Greek people as lazy and tax evading has desensitized the public and has
made austerity seem like more of a sensible option. The media messages have made strict austerity measures seem justified and in effect have
hegemozined the Greek people.
Greece is no different than other countries who have been forced to accept IMF loans, the vast majority of these funds end up flowing back into the
multinational banks who made the risky loans. The Troika has made demands of increased privatization of national assets as collateral and the

The Harry Potter series was, and still is, my favourite books to read. The series, which contains seven books, are my price possession. I started

movies but nobody was as excited as I am when I found out that they had film adaptation for the books. Needless to say, I was mesmerized.
Everything was so amusing to me, from the effects in the movies to the design of the posters. It is almost like the imagination in my head had come to

bathing in unhygienic water was known to increase the risk of chronic suppurative otitis media (Sabella, 2000). It seems that well–serviced swimming
pool may help in clearing discharges from the middle ear space(Pringle, 1993). However, some studies suggested this may not be the case (Lee, Youk,
& Goldstein, 1999). And a more recent international investigation suggested swimming pools with improved hygienic facilities have no obvious benefit
to other otitis media subtypes such as acute otitis media(Bernard, Carbonnelle, Dumont, & Nickmilder, 2007).
Nevertheless, studies done in Australian Indigenous communities revealed a lower rate of chronic otitis media in rural Indigenous communities with

Simply the status of Indigenous is a significant risk factor for all types of otitis media. The prevalence of acute otitis media among Indigenous
children can go up to 30%(HPE, 2009), which is far beyond the percentage (4%) specified by WHO as a massive public health issue.
Some studies have been conducted to investigate the possibility of the involvement of a genetic predisposition to the high prevalence of otitis media
among Indigenous populations (Klein, 1994). However, poverty and social disparities as major health risks should not be overlooked.
Otitis media in Australian Indigenous population is both under–recognized and under–reported(Jervis–Bardy et al., 2014). The studies reviewed here
showed that otitis media in Indigenous populations starts earlier, lasts longer with a more severe manifestation compared to the general population.
Poor living conditions and household infrastructures, exposure to environmental smoke contribute to a higher risk of otitis media in Indigenous
children. However, recent studies on the impact of swimming pools and breastfeeding negates the findings of previous researches. Nevertheless, the
unacceptably high prevalence of otitis media among Indigenous population is the result of multiple factors including medical, socio–cultural,
environmental and political elements. All

The Impact Of Media On Culture And Media Studies
Theorizing Media Theoretical perspectives in the culture and media studies Media is a field of study dealing with history, effect and content of
different forms of traditions from both humanities and social sciences (Winston & Winston, 1998). The core disciplines commonly associated with
media include communication and culture, communication studies and mass communication. However, researchers have recently developed and
employed methods and theories from philosophy, psychology anthropology, sociology art theory and most important, cultural theories
(BUSHWELLER, 1984). Culture on the other hand is defined as a learned behavior mostly from a section of a particular social group (Rosner,
Halcrow & Levins, 2001). The media is a dynamic, evolving and diverse collection of the forms used to communicate, with the public. Media
strongly influence the manner in which people spend their daily routines while also shaping the manner in which individuals perceive themselves.
Through media, the exchange and creation of social, national, personal and cultural identities are enhanced. Media can be used as a channel of
transmitting values to the society (Cragan & Shields, 1998). The aforementioned is also known as socialization of media functions. It defines how
individuals or groups come to embrace the behaviors of foreign individuals or groups. Most of the people glued to the media learn good or poor
morals and may adopt the trends observed. Finally media is important because it educates,

Media And Schizophrenia Case Study
In today's ever–growing communication age, there is one thing that remains constant through it all: the media. This is not to say that media, itself, is
not evolving as that would be untrue; however, media remains the vessel in which the world stays connected. Humans are the creators of media and
with that comes their natural biases and opinions. One bias that really showcases itself is the current one against mental illnesses. During a 2010
study, newspaper articles were collected from various top agencies and analyzed for the usage of the word "Schizophrenia". Of the articles that were
collected and analyzed, 3.5% referenced Schizophrenia (Vahabzadeh et al pg. 442). This may seem like a minute number and it is, but the limited

Stigmas have the same basic start as a stereotype, a couple of cases becomes the generalization for an entire group or status. Stigmas go one step
further and become a paradigm that the general public may live under. As Dockery expressed when he stated stigmas "...can be considered a
multifaceted concept involving: labelling; negative stereotyping; separation of 'them' from 'us'; status loss and discrimination, leading to multiple
inequalities" (Dockery et al pg. 613). Add the diagnosed people and the non–diagnosed to the stigma equation and a cyclic nature reveals itself. For the
purpose of relating this to what has been said, the beginning of the stigmatization process will be the media. The media portrays the diagnosed as
deranged murderers because "...mental illness have been shown to strongly attract readers' attention..." (Vahabzadeh et al pg. 440). This projection of
the diagnosed translates to a limited amount of information that the public has on the illness. In order to fill in the void, the public takes the
information that it has, the negative portrayals, and accepts them. This then becomes the stigma on Schizophrenia. That negative status is now placed
on the diagnosed. The diagnosed then lose some of the credibility and begin to have more inequalities. The people who experience said inequalities are
now matching the description of what the stigma says. They accept and adopt the

Development Of Media And Communications Study
In this essay I shall analyze the development of media and communications study and the themes that have helped it to improve during the last century.
A persistent concept in this field is equality because theories like Marxism, Cultural Studies, Feminism, Structuralism and Post–structuralism,
Subcultural Theory and Postmodernism examined this notion and gave it a meaning in that period of time. Against this background, a central question
that motives this paper is: 'How is equality developed by each ideology and how media manipulate it through the popular culture?' By definition,
equality means that all people have their own opportunity to express themselves because we conceive the world differently. But we still create

Marxism is a political, economical and social system founded by Karl Marx (1818 – 1883) and Frederick Engels (1820 – 1895) who tried to reorganize
the world through their revolutionary ideologies and theories. Thus its intention is to dismiss the evolution of the Bourgeoisie society, because, in the
18th century, one of the essential concepts was the notion of class struggle. As John Storey points out, 'each significant period in history is constructed
around a particular mode of production; that is, the way in which a society is organized' (2006: 47) . This quote suggests that Marx, through the
analyze of global production, asserts that people have to live and work in equal conditions, without differences between the class of wage–earners and
the ruling class. Even if it is said that the Marxism is out–of–date, it still exists, nowadays, because of the media factors that sustain its manifestations.
For instance, mass media promotes obscenity and presents degeneration as a normal subject.
What we usually have in mind when we talk about Cultural Studies is the fact that it is like an amalgam composed by traditions, arts, values, thoughts,
faith, which is transmitted from generations to generations. Theorists as Richard Hoggart, Raymond Williams, Stuart Hall and also the Centre for
Contemporany Cultural Studies brought a new vision on culture. "Lived culture is culture as

The 's Study On Ideal Media Images
Turn on your television, it does not matter which channel. It will not take long before you are bombarded with images of what the world has
decided you should look like. Television is not the only means by which our image of ourselves is distorted. The internet, newspapers, magazine,
and any other form of the media have spread this disease that cause affected individuals to believe they are not good enough. Beauty has become
defined by appearance and the media refuses to see it as anything else. This twisting of our conception of what it takes to be beautiful has had a
negative impact on our culture and lifestyles. Women and men both have to face these images and they either fight or succumb to the oppression.
What we are up against is best defined by Harper and Tiggemann's study on ideal media images:
There is no doubt that Western women are subject to a great deal of pressure to conform to the thin ideal of feminine beauty. As a result, many
experience body dissatisfaction in the form of weight concern, and a sizeable majority will actively seek to reduce their weight. Current sociocultural
theory offers the most robust theoretical framework for understanding body dissatisfaction, contending that the thin ideal is created and reinforced by a
number of social influences. Among these, the mass media have been identified as the most pervasive and the most powerful. (649)
While the quote only refers to women, men also face many of the same issues. If the media continues to

Social Media Case Study – Costco
Social media has become an influential ground for consumers to share their opinions about a company's brand and products. In addition, it helps in
having a strong brand that produces positive relations and distinguish the brand from competitors, is a critical component for effective marketing.
According to DahlГ©n and Lange (2009) "the quality of the product is not the evident factor when it comes to purchasing a product, the deciding
factor depends on how the brand is perceived" (Para. 1). This demonstrates the importance of incorporating social media as a tool to promote brands,
allow for interactions, and customer satisfaction by engaging with customers more frequently for feedbacks or reviews. Thus create an opportunity for
the company to show its devotion to their customers, and initiate good reputation, which can increase sales. In other words, social media has the ability
to upsurge the awareness for businesses as well as the brand.

States, Canada, and Mexico. According to Michaud (2012), "By the end of 2008, there were 550 stores in 40 states and 7 countries, with 54 million

Pop Culture: Has Popular Culture Gone Too Far?
It has become a concern of many people that what we are being to exposed to through media, may be harming society. It is controversial whether
popular culture is beneficial or not to the younger viewers. Some argue that popular culture is a bad influence and has "gone too far"with certain
topics. While others believe we can incorporate it in a way to enlighten our youth.
A trending dance move seen all over social media with a drug related name, widely known as the "dab", has gave many the wrong message. According
to Christian Science Monitor, "As the debate over the dance builds, so too does the discussion about the potential dangers of the drug and its culture

the consistency. In a 2016 study on the dab culture, kids do the drug while they do the dance (Suhay). This is what worries parents of children who

The Media Of Media And Communication Studies
Categorizing audiences The study of audience is a pivotal area in media and communication studies. The reason why the question of audience remains
at the center of media and communication research is not because it is an essential question of research, but because it is rather a theoretical
problematic among scholars over time. For more than a century, among the media and communication researchers and academics the study of media
audiences has been a primary concern and contested area at the same time. The scholars have analyzed and studied media audiences from different
point of views, but mush of these media research has labeled the audience as either 'audience as mass (mass behavior and media events)' (Atkinson
2006, p.143), while others analyze audiences from different points of views, for example, audience as outcome (effects and attitude change) or
audiences as agent (uses and gratification) (Atkinson 2006, p.143). Furthermore, Allor (1988, p.217) demonstrates that, 'the elaboration of the questions
of effects tradition in uses and gratification, agenda setting, and cultivation analysis offers the most immediate examples of the continued line of
questioning with in the dominant paradigm'. Overall here, it can be said that, the concept of audience is more importantly the underpinning prop for
the analysis of the social impact of mass communication in general. There are more than a specific form of audience in media and communication
industry. Not two individuals

The Sexualization Of The Female Pop Celebrity

changed. Now more than ever, social media has allowed us to be connected to the stars that we look up to. Research has increased on the subject since

Women now wanted to know what their favorite stars were doing, and soon looked to them for a model of what a woman should be. However, the
expectations were very high. Female celebrities were able to have more freedom than any women prior, due to their prominence and high status, but
their roles were also constraining. They were often rooted in regressive definitions of gender. Celebrities are expected to be successful actors, doting
wives and mothers, and an example of femininity all at once.
Artist Types
Scholars including Musial (2014) and Donze (2011) have described how female pop stars are often limited to very distinct character types that define
them, with difficulty moving away from these small boxes. Instead, celebrities have been known to embrace these roles fully rather than fight the
inevitable. In its most basic form, these characters are usually either the Madonna, the virginal good girl, or the Whore, the immoral seductress. Musial
(2014) explained that the Madonna–Whore Complex is a term first coined by Freud to describe our tendency to see women in black and white terms.
Musial looked at how a celebrity 's character could change by transitioning from Madonna to Whore after having sex, the most reliable way of
knowing being pregnancy. After having a child, it would be almost impossible for a pop star to ever be seen in the good

News Media Bias Case Study: Analyzing Coverage of Baltimore Curfew

  • 1. News Media Bias Case Study Objectivity has become a defining component of the news media. Although this request is quite precarious given the business model of companies that disseminate news, objectivity remains a professional standard of journalism and reporting that the public is highly aware of. Identifying and analyzing media bias is an extremely complex task that not many people engage in. The public often criticizes the news media for trying to advance certain viewpoints or being advocates of political positions. In other words, many people wish the news media was less biased and more objective. Evaluating four news sources, CBS This Morning, ABC7 News, NBC News, and CNN on their coverage of the implementation of a curfew in Baltimore following the Baltimore protests, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Perhaps the chosen topic didn't elicit itself to ideological stances as a topic regarding a 2016 presidential candidate would have. Regardless of ideological bias, certain news frames were present that helped to categorize protesters as either overwhelmingly violent or peaceful. While each news source mentioned the looting and violence that erupted directly after Gray's funeral on Monday, only two sources focused on the peaceful protests that occurred on Tuesday. The curfew was interpreted as a conflict and standoff by ABC7 News and CNN News, but also as an event with minor dissidence by CBS This Morning and NBC News. The coverage of the Baltimore curfew varied in its sensationalism of conflict and violence, but not ideologically. Why do so many Americans believe that their news sources contain ideological bias? As mentioned in the explanation of President Obama's quote in the analysis of the CNN News article, "studies of hostile media effect have found that individuals who have strong opinions about an issue or close ties to a social group (i.e., partisans) that is the focus of a controversy will be highly unlikely to perceive any story about that issue or group as credible" (Arpan & Peterson 311). While this was not the case with ideological bias in these four news sources, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Why is important to study the media, rather than simply... The media is a dynamic entity inherent in society that is both powerful and important. It demonstrates this by playing a vital role in the development of a person 's perspective on political, economic and socio–cultural issues. This consequently helps to shape individuals ' viewpoints of the world and define their lives through the interpretation of media texts. (Newman, 2004). Bazalgette supported Newman 's point by stating "Media studies open up your understanding of how things work, how people become informed – or misinformed – and how the myths and ideologies that govern all our lives are created and sustained." (Bazalgette, 2000, pp.14). Thus, the focus of this essay will be on these aspects; how the theory of ideology and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The media messages are no longer fixated with only one prevailing meaning imposed on by the authoritative figures. (Schirato & Yell, 2000). Now, not only are there multiple angles to analyze and interpret media texts, the sheer volume of different messages transmitted by media forms is astounding. To make sense of the meaning of the world portrayed to the audience through the media, there needs to be an engagement in an active work of decoding or interpretation, rather than a passive process of purely receiving and consuming media messages. (Morley, 1992). As quoted from Alan McKee;" When we perform textual analysis on a text, we make an educated guess at some of the mostly likely interpretations that might be made of that text." (McKee, 2001,pp.140). Textual analysis serves as a critical approach to ignite comprehension of media texts and to uncover possible interpretation of reality, thereby allowing the construction of ... Literature review: Through searching different books, articles and documentaries on internet and media resources it can be deduced that National Identity is a subject that is mostly dealt indirectly by Media. A huge amount of literature and media projects are available all around the world on the subject but it addresses only specific regions and characteristics of national identity. For example rather than defining what National Identity itself is, most of the work is done about National language, National Heroes and National Heritage etc. National identity is a vast subject which directly or indirectly touches huge number of variegated subjects. National Television plays the major role in developing the sense of National Identity. PTV as national service channel inPakistan has produced a large number of programmes in various formats which directly and indirectly address the importance of National identity. Patriotic songs presented by PTV focus various emblems of National identity eg. • 5. Studies of Social Media and its Effects on Adolescent’s... Throughout the years, technology has evolved into something people cannot live without. Mixed in with all of the improvements, social media has become a major asset in the lives of people. Social media can include websites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, but can also include video games and magazines. However, social media is not always genuine. In the mindset of adolescents, these medias help to create unrealistic ideas of who they are and who they should be. As if going through puberty isn't difficult enough, teenagers are raised to face these phony thoughts everyday. One of the top problems that boys and girls experience is the way they view their body; commonly referred to as "body image." Our media–saturated world provides many... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It is said that it is easier to communicate with an individual through technology than it is to communicate face–to–face. These negative comments are a major factor when it comes to negative self–esteem. Many websites are currently being sponsored by hundreds of advertisements. They are primarily aimed to emphasize the importance of being attractive. Sexually objectified images of girls and women, along with boys and men in advertisements, are most likely to appear in magazines, video games and on television. There is a video that came out in early 2014 that demonstrated what various food advertisements would look like if the females were switched out with males. The results were awkward and did not display the full potential the companies were originally trying to achieve. This is an example of advertisements primarily aimed to "please the public" rather than exhibiting a realistic setting. With the help of editing software, including the highly popular Adobe Photoshop, these programs assist in airbrushing and "fixing" models. Thus, resulting in adolescents wanting to look like what they see in the media. Media contributes to the establishment of disordered eating and body dissatisfaction. Long–term exposure of media during early childhood lays the foundation for the negative effects of media during adolescence. Magazine reading, social comparisons, and critical body image processing are important predictors of body image and eating disturbances for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Portrayal Of Women In Media Literacy LITERATURE REVIEW The well known adage which states that "If a woman is educated, the whole family gets educated", is very appropriate for Media Literacy. Poverty, gender discrepancies, illiteracy and disconnectivity have left women all over the world helpless when it comes to getting information. Sadly, historically across the globe such discrepancies are not confined to a specific culture, region, country or status. But one thing that has been observed is that this is more obvious in the rural and backward areas (Johnson. N,2013). It is essential that women be harnessed to use technology and thereby included in the big picture of media literacy. Having technology and not being able to use it, is as good as not having it. Developing media skills is equally essential. When women citizens become critical consumers of information, then they would most definitely contribute to public discourse effectively. Another reason is that in developing media skills, women citizens can protect themselves and others from harmful content pushed mainly by new information and communication technologies. Portrayal of Women in Media How women are portrayed or represented in media is also important. Media can play a significant role in sensitizing the society about gender issues. But, before that, the media itself needs to be sensitized in covering women issues. The distribution of power between the two sexes both physical and economic is unequal, leading to discrimination against women. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. Media Case Study 12. Wordpress Tutorial posting options Welcome to our WordPress lesson. So with this Knowledge bit, we are going to talk about how easy it is to add media to a post and how to actually finalize a post so in this lesson we are going to talk about setting up post. Customize Permalink We have also got an option here to customize our permalinks where we might want to actually create a really custom URL's, so 'coolurlhere'. so that's exactly what I wanted if I want to have a 'coolurlhere' so this can be the actual link of the page and really think about WordPress is really a lot of cool stuff because its dated base driven content it's not actually connected to these URL's so you can change these and if you don't like it, you can actually ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another really cool feature we can create galleries to better organize our images. [Screenshot5] So we have one more thing we are able to actually link it to a custom URL, we can link it to the media file or we can just leave it without a link so that can all be done right here Custom URL all we had in that link there. [Screenshot6] And here you have those size options that we looked at earlier and we have got the ability for thumbnail, medium–large and as you can see its updated the dimensions so that the width there is always going to be that max width of 300 but the height is the one that's going to change so we don't have disproportionate images because if we uploaded an image and if we wanted a square 300x300 we can't do that with an image of size 1200x630. [Screenshot7] So keep that in mind and I am just going to leave it as a medium by default because this is probably the best way to go when I am adding it to my page. And now I have to do insert post and there it gets inserted, I see that I have got the caption when I go to the actual HTML it's created all of that HTML so caption ID it's giving some mega information there and it's also got a class so size medium so that's where it's getting that max medium of 300. [Screenshot8]

  • 9. Participatory Culture Paper It's no secret that people are engaging more and more with the Internet and social media everyday. A simple Google search can lead you to various discussion forums, Tumblr blogs, and a plethora of hash–tagged Tweets. The Internet is an interactive medium, and as users of that medium, we have access to innumerable amounts of data and information previous generations could only dream of. With the rise of an interactive, communicative platform, people and companies can send and receive messages instantaneously. Take the phenomenon of live tweeting for example: audience members (particularly fans) watching a television show in real time can provide instant feedback of their responses, and using particular hashtags, can have their responses appear... The Internet provides a space where this participatory culture can thrive. Discussion–based forums and boards are especially active places where fans can interact. According to Jenkins, "message boards and forums become knowledge communities that structure and organize the fans' knowledge about a particular text" (Booth, 2010, pp. 37–38). From these interactive online hubs, fans can work together to create distinct meanings unique to their fan culture and themselves, according to media scholar Paul Booth: "Dialogue through forums and listservs create meaning for the members of the community separated from the meaning contained (or read) within the extant media object" (Booth, 2010, pp. 37–38). Discussion boards and forums aren't the only places where this type of interaction occurs; blogs are another place where fans can engage in this participatory culture. Blogs, and more importantly, their ability to comment and provide feedback are integral to the interactivity and productivity of online fandom. According to Booth, "Comments become a way for the blog to elicit feedback and participation by members of a community." This ability to provide instantaneous feedback fulfills the desire of instant gratification and fosters the ability to communicate more effectively as a collective ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Analysis Of Justin Bieber 's Release Of Purpose : The... Literature Review This paper will examine relevant literature that can be applied to the wide–ranging Twitter responses to Justin Bieber's release of Purpose: The Movement. The literature review will provide an overview of parasocial interaction theory, celebrity worship, and the involvement of social media in these areas. Following the review of relevant literature will be a list of research questions to guide future study in this field. Parasocial Interaction Parasocial interaction (PSI) is a term used to describe the one–sided relationships that come about between media users and media personalities. Parasocial Interaction Theory has been used for many years as a method to understand the ways in which individuals become attached to media personae. This kind of interaction was first studied in 1956 by Horton and Wohl. This theory may also serve to offer some explanations to why some media consumers behave the way they do online. Horton and Wohl (1956) concluded from their study that audiences develop a sort of attachment as they continually observe media personalities. In other words, the more exposure to the media figure, the stronger the parasocial relationship. This concept was consistent with findings from a separate study conducted by Perse and Rubin (1989). In their research, Perse and Rubin found that the perceived intimacy in these relationships was greater with increased interaction. At the time, the media was limited to only print and broadcast platforms, frequently part of huge conglomerate news corporations. The idea of the "citizen journalist" or even the Internet did not even enter into the Court's consideration. Instead, the court grounded its decision to include access to media as one of the factors included in the public figure test for the purpose of protecting the reputation of the private individual. That purpose still resonates today, despite the significant changes in the composition of the media. Presently, the Internet is the primary source of news for millions of people,... In order to rebut the statements made against him/her, he/she would have the ability to access a large audience by either; holding a press conference, issuing a statement to the press, making a public statement, or otherwise responding to the defamations. Of course, he/she could also bring a defamation claim against the speaker in court, but he/she would then have to prove actual malice. The initial defamatory statements and the subsequent rebuttal, given by a well–known public figure, would garner the attention of similar audiences. It is due to this attention that the Court rightly included this element in the public figure test; lawsuits brought by those who have been defamed may only be seen as an undesirable alternative means for redress if they are capable of responding to the defamatory remarks outside of court, and are able to mitigate the damages caused by the statements by doing so. The Supreme Court's position in Gertz, keeping in mind this same archetypal defamation claim, should be understood as aiming to bolster public speech, debate, and the contribution of new ideas into the marketplace of ideas and further striving to avoid the chilling of any type of speech that could be the result of self–censorship. So it was vehemently proclaimed in Time MagazineВ№s special issue dedicated to one of the most tragic events in American History and arguably one of the most brutal acts of terrorism to date. America, in the spasms of a few hours, has become a changed country. Perhaps in an attempt to understand this change and come to grips with the ensuing crisis, more and more people are turning to the media for answers. In this case, the audience is probably reading the message critically (negotiated code) or oppositionally (oppositional code) depending on his/her background. In other words, different audiences will decode and interpret differently, depending on factors such as age, gender, education level, religion, and political affiliation. Most believe that things have indeed changed everything from national security to conducting daily business for some. What is certain is that this change has been further exasperated by the histeria created mostly through the media. Take for example the seemingly endless anthrax stories. The almost constant coverage of anthrax cases has led the public to believe that new cases are constantly sprouting in every corner of the nation. This obsession over anthrax has resulted in part from the uncertainty about future attacks and how we will be affected. Anthrax, now a usual topic in conversations, has no doubt captured public and media attention to an extraordinary degree. Add the diagnosed people and the non–diagnosed to the stigma equation and a cyclic nature reveals itself. For the purpose of relating this to what has been said, the beginning of the stigmatization process will be the media. The media portrays the diagnosed as deranged murderers because "...mental illness have been shown to strongly attract readers' attention..." (Vahabzadeh et al pg. 440). This projection of the diagnosed translates to a limited amount of information that the public has on the illness. In order to fill in the void, the public takes the information that it has, the negative portrayals, and accepts them. This then becomes the stigma on Schizophrenia. • 34. Development Of Media And Communications Study In this essay I shall analyze the development of media and communications study and the themes that have helped it to improve during the last century. A persistent concept in this field is equality because theories like Marxism, Cultural Studies, Feminism, Structuralism and Post–structuralism, Subcultural Theory and Postmodernism examined this notion and gave it a meaning in that period of time. Against this background, a central question that motives this paper is: 'How is equality developed by each ideology and how media manipulate it through the popular culture?' By definition, equality means that all people have their own opportunity to express themselves because we conceive the world differently. But we still create ourselves in ... Marxism is a political, economical and social system founded by Karl Marx (1818 – 1883) and Frederick Engels (1820 – 1895) who tried to reorganize the world through their revolutionary ideologies and theories. Thus its intention is to dismiss the evolution of the Bourgeoisie society, because, in the 18th century, one of the essential concepts was the notion of class struggle. As John Storey points out, 'each significant period in history is constructed around a particular mode of production; that is, the way in which a society is organized' (2006: 47) . This quote suggests that Marx, through the analyze of global production, asserts that people have to live and work in equal conditions, without differences between the class of wage–earners and the ruling class. Even if it is said that the Marxism is out–of–date, it still exists, nowadays, because of the media factors that sustain its manifestations. For instance, mass media promotes obscenity and presents degeneration as a normal subject. What we usually have in mind when we talk about Cultural Studies is the fact that it is like an amalgam composed by traditions, arts, values, thoughts, faith, which is transmitted from generations to generations. Theorists as Richard Hoggart, Raymond Williams, Stuart Hall and also the Centre for Contemporany Cultural Studies brought a new vision on culture. "Lived culture is culture as ... It will not take long before you are bombarded with images of what the world has decided you should look like. Television is not the only means by which our image of ourselves is distorted. The internet, newspapers, magazine, and any other form of the media have spread this disease that cause affected individuals to believe they are not good enough. Beauty has become defined by appearance and the media refuses to see it as anything else. This twisting of our conception of what it takes to be beautiful has had a negative impact on our culture and lifestyles. Women and men both have to face these images and they either fight or succumb to the oppression. What we are up against is best defined by Harper and Tiggemann's study on ideal media images: There is no doubt that Western women are subject to a great deal of pressure to conform to the thin ideal of feminine beauty. As a result, many experience body dissatisfaction in the form of weight concern, and a sizeable majority will actively seek to reduce their weight. Current sociocultural theory offers the most robust theoretical framework for understanding body dissatisfaction, contending that the thin ideal is created and reinforced by a number of social influences. Among these, the mass media have been identified as the most pervasive and the most powerful. (649) While the quote only refers to women, men also face many of the same issues. The reason why the question of audience remains at the center of media and communication research is not because it is an essential question of research, but because it is rather a theoretical problematic among scholars over time. For more than a century, among the media and communication researchers and academics the study of media audiences has been a primary concern and contested area at the same time. The scholars have analyzed and studied media audiences from different point of views, but mush of these media research has labeled the audience as either 'audience as mass (mass behavior and media events)' (Atkinson 2006, p.143), while others analyze audiences from different points of views, for example, audience as outcome (effects and attitude change) or audiences as agent (uses and gratification) (Atkinson 2006, p.143). Furthermore, Allor (1988, p.217) demonstrates that, 'the elaboration of the questions of effects tradition in uses and gratification, agenda setting, and cultivation analysis offers the most immediate examples of the continued line of questioning with in the dominant paradigm'. Overall here, it can be said that, the concept of audience is more importantly the underpinning prop for the analysis of the social impact of mass communication in general. Female celebrities were able to have more freedom than any women prior, due to their prominence and high status, but their roles were also constraining. They were often rooted in regressive definitions of gender. Celebrities are expected to be successful actors, doting wives and mothers, and an example of femininity all at once. Artist Types Scholars including Musial (2014) and Donze (2011) have described how female pop stars are often limited to very distinct character types that define them, with difficulty moving away from these small boxes. Instead, celebrities have been known to embrace these roles fully rather than fight the inevitable. In its most basic form, these characters are usually either the Madonna, the virginal good girl, or the Whore, the immoral seductress. Musial (2014) explained that the Madonna–Whore Complex is a term first coined by Freud to describe our tendency to see women in black and white terms. Musial looked at how a celebrity 's character could change by transitioning from Madonna to Whore after having sex, the most reliable way of knowing being pregnancy.
