Redwood National Park Research Paper
Today was another beautiful day in the Redwood National Park. The park is in Northern California,
near the coast, and very close to the Oregon border. So, it was a little breezy but, it's summer so for
the most part it was quite warm and sunny. As the park ranger walked us through the Redwood
Forest the birds were chirping the air was clean and fresh, there were a few clouds in the sky. It was
the perfect weather for a walk through the woods. Today, my family and I learned many interesting
facts about Redwood National Park, while we took a short tour around the park with a park ranger.
We learned, when the park was established and why, why this park is a national treasure, and why
national parks are so important.

National parks protect and preserve nature's natural beauty. The vast, open land provides a safe
place that allows native plants and animals to thrive in their natural environment. National parks not
only protect plants, animals, and the natural beauty, but they also protect a place that might be
important to people. Someone's ancestors might have walked through these very redwood forests.
Thankfully, the forests are now protected and they would get a chance to experience how it felt like
to walk through the amazing, tall, beautiful Redwood trees. Thanks to the amount of vegetation in
national parks, they also help us clean the air because of the large amounts of carbon dioxide the
vegetation releases, and oxygen it soaks in. So, national parks also help the environment, not just
protect it, that's pretty cool. I guess it's their way of saying thank you to us for protecting them for
the rest of their lives. National parks aren't all about nature though, they're also great places to visit,
relax, and have fun with your family and friends. All national parks provide an abundance of
exciting activities you can enjoy with your family, not just Redwood National Park. The final reason
why national parks are so important is, they allow people to get educated on the world around but,
in a fun and entertaining

The Redwood Tree-Personal Narrative
I have hunted monsters in the depths of Lake Erie. I have searched for fairies in the Redwood
Forest. I have solved mysteries at the bottom of the ocean. No matter how different they may seem,
all these adventures have one common thread. My brother. When he was born the doctor said he
would never walk, talk, or read. Receiving this news broke my parents hearts. Even with this
disastrous news they set out to prove him wrong. They decided that they would provide him with
every opportunity to strive. By the time I was born, four years later, he could walk and talk like any
other child and he still continues to learn new skills to this day. When I was first born, my brother
called me baby girl because he was not able to pronounce my name. Wherever I was, that was
where he was. I was his favorite person. He would spend hours just staring at me in my crib waiting
for me to do something.
After I learned to talk my brother and I had our own secret language. Even though it was actually
poorly spoken English. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. My parents would complain that we
never made any sense, but we would laugh and play all day without a care in the world. As we grew
up I was the only one who could understand him, which created a special ... Show more content on

THen he learned sign language and refused to talk to me. He became obsessed with video games as
well. He changed before my eyes. He used to be happy all the time. He would smile for no reason.
He was not affected by what people said like I was. The best part of his day was all of it. He was
truly a glass–half–full–type–of–person. When I saw this change it scared me. I thought I would lose
the brother I knew. The person that could just brighten up a room. I got to know this new brother
and found out that he is not that different. I forgot that everything changes. I forgot to break down
the barriers in my mind to let in new ideas. I forgot that he was still my brother. He just added some

Redwoods Research Papers
Wow these our big! The Redwoods are found in Crescent City, CA. The Redwoods were established
in 1968 located in the northernmost California, and is home to old–growth coast Redwoods as a
national park. They have developed campgrounds, and backcountry sites to hike to. If people
approach, the elk may charge, kick and lash out. Serious injuries have occurred. For everyone's
safety, stay 100 feet away. In fall, male elk are very aggressive. It is very cool to camp there the staff

Synthesis Paper: It's All About Trees
Synthesis Paper: It's All About Trees Trees are an extraordinary form of life here on Earth that we as
humans fail to appreciate. We find ourselves "too busy" to learn about the living organisms that
provide us with so much, including life. I have taken it upon myself to help inform readers of just
how unique and important trees can be. Throughout the course of the blog posts, the topic of the
importance, purposes, and history of various tree species is discussed. The five major tree species
that were written about in the blog are: the baobab, the coast redwood, the Socotra dragon's blood
tree, the Moringa oleifera, and the oak tree. Each blog post described the significances of each of
these species. The significances included those such as ways in which the tree is or has been used,
the dimensions of the trees, the importance of the tree to natives and other individuals in history, as

This tree is massive in size and almost has the shape of an upside–down tree. According to the
writer of the text from Kruger Park, a Baobab tree can grow to be twenty meters tall with a trunk so
large that a minimum of forty people holding hands stretch around the trunk. The author, through his
use of facts, portrays a beneficial point of view of the species that creates a sense of understanding
of the purpose and importance of the tree to the Native people. The same author from Kruger Park
wrote, "When bare of leaves, the spreading branches of the Baobab look like roots sticking up into
the air, rather as if it had been planted upside–down." The baobab tree has only two main
characteristics that set it apart from other tree species. These two characteristics are: its overall size
and its odd shape making it appear to be upside–down. The baobab tree, however, is not the only
tree known primarily for its immense size. The coast redwood is a large tree native to the United
States that is popularly known for its great

List all indicators (including stated "problems") that something is not as expected or as desired.
The forests that surround us and are a crucial part of our eco system has developed over millions of
years. Even since the age of dinosaurs, we have forests which went depleted and replenished, going
from age to age. The ecosystem of the forests provides a home to all animals and not only do we
take their home, we are not replacing them. The animals who lose their home in the wake of cutting
trees, will eventually come close to cities. Not only the forests are a source of oxygen for all living
beings, they also help curtail the greenhouse gases and keep global warming in control.
3. Identify the areas that need improvement
In my view there is a lot we can do for the improvement of the forest such as planting more trees,
having government restrictions on companies that are into wood cutting business. The forests we
have are one of the most essential sources of resources. There can be places of forests which can be
a huge penalty for companies who try to cross the line. A moral responsibility from the side of
companies can also be an ideal way as to them planting trees simultaneously or have some donation
campaigns running around from which the money generated is used to plant

Susan Nason Case In Redwood City, California
The case against George Franklin took place in Redwood City, California. The victim, 8–year old
Susan Nason, was raped and murdered by George Franklin in 1969. But it wasn't until 20 years after
this horrendous crime that George Franklin was found guilty. He was guilty of first degree murder.
This case gained attention because it was the first case ever to determine a man's fate based off of
the resurfacing of repressed memory.
Eileen Franklin, George Franklin's daughter, recalled having a flashback of her best friend,
Susan's murder. It was the look in her daughter's eyes that triggered this memory. She contacted the
authorities and shortly after she found herself testifying against her father.
Her testimony of this was, "I saw my father approaching Susan, his ... Show more content on

I screamed. I yelled...I heard two blows"(ChicagoTribune,1990)
There was a division amongst psychologists and psychiatrists. Some believed that there was no
physical evidence to show that Eileen's recovered memory was true. However, others believed that
this crime was too traumatizing for Eileen and resulted in repressing this particular memory.
But how could she completely block this memory for 20 years? "Franklin–Lipsker testified that she
repressed the memory for 20 years because her dad threatened to kill her too"
(ChicagoTribune,1990). Ultimately, George Franklin was convicted to life in prison. But this case
took a turn when 6 years after his imprisonment, he was a free man. Due to DNA evidence, George
Franklin's name was cleared, and he walked out of prison.
Repressed Memory
In my opinion, recovering very traumatic memories, can be caused by finding yourself in a similar
situation. Perhaps even experiencing certain feelings can lead to recovering any repressed
memories. If a repressed memory is recovered I don't believe you view the world the same way you
once did. How do you live in peace after recalling being present when a murder has been
committed?
Or being a victim of sexual

Analysis Of Jane Hirshfield 's Poem ' Tree '
Jane Hirshfield connects to nature at her home in Marin County, California this is where she gets her
inspiration for her poems. Hirshfield published "Tree" in 2000 as a free verse poem, divided into 4
stanzas and 4 sentences to convey the nature world. The poem represents a "young redwood" (line
2) growing near a house, near a kitchen window. The redwood is already scraping against the
window frame of the house, reminding the reader of the "foolish" (line 1) idea of letting it grow
there. Humans were created to be one with nature, but as they evolved as a species, they were
obligated to choose between the materialistic world or the world of nature. Hirshfield writes this
poem in second person to give life to the poem so that the poem speaks to the reader. The poem
starts by accusing the reader of letting the redwood grow near the house. "It is foolish" (line 1) lets
the reader know that nature should not be growing this close to your home. Hirshfield takes the
liberty to talk straight to the reader through the speaker in telling them that it is nonsense to let
nature be so close to a material object such as a house. The reader can visually see a "young
redwood// grow next to a house" (line 2, 3). The tree starts to symbolize the beauty of nature
growing against the materialistic world. A new sentence leads into the second stanza to introduce a
new idea; it shifts the attention of the poem from the imagery of the redwood growing against the
house to the shortness of the

The Train Speeding Along The Tracks Beneath Me
I could hear the sound of the train speeding along the tracks beneath me. Looking outside my
window, I could see a blur of parched grass and vast paddocks of sheep drinking from lakes.
I was in a dim mood. My parents had sent me away from our home town Braedon to spend time
with my grandmother in the country town of Redwood, because, as they bluntly put it, she wouldn't
be around for many more years. I didn't mind visiting my grandpa, but I hated that the fact that I had
to travel out of Braedon. I loved the city–the convenience of only being five minutes away from the
shops, carpets of sand stretching across the beach at my doorstep, a joyous community and my
friends, only a short text away.
I was seated opposite to a casually dressed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
"When I travel, no matter how different the place is to Braedon, I often feel an instant connection.
It's the small details which lead me to find a love for the city. Say, like last year, I found my way
into a remote village in Kenya. It was unforgettable. I can still picture the welcoming locals, smiling
at me and the other tourists..."
For the remaining hour of the trip, I reflected on my opinion of travelling. All my life, I lived in the
city and due to my routined lifestyle, I was rarely anywhere unfamiliar. I disliked travelling as I
feared being alone, facing something new. Yet after talking to Chris, I began to realise the golden
opportunity I had to experience all the world had to offer to me.
Eventually, the train had come to a halt at my stop – Redwood. The deserted train station, which
catered for the whole town, was tiny, with only two short platforms. Along the flat landscape, I
could see rows of houses and the town's church, the steeple proudly and loftily reaching to the clear
blue sky.
I farewelled Chris and got off the train with my suitcase. The air was crisp, clean and clear. I
thought of the dusty city air and gridlocked streets with car fumes. How big was this difference? I
decided to forget my past impressions of Redwood and instead try to enjoy my stay with my
grandpa.

Muir Woods Research Paper
Muir Woods National Monument is located in Marin County, about 15 miles away from San
Francisco. Muir Woods contains a large portion of Redwood Canyon and is near the base of Mount
Tamalpais. The park was established in 1907 when William Kent, a California congressman and
philanthropist, gifted 298 acres of costal redwoods to the federal government in attempt to preserve
the area from development. The now historic redwoods were the target of the North Coast Water
Company who planned to build a new reservoir. A year later on January 9th, President Theodore
Roosevelt signed the proclamation establishing Muir Woods as a National Monument (Dilsaver,
294). Under the Antiquities Act of 1906 Roosevelt proclaimed this area to be of "extraordinary

what the canopy of the redwood holds. The redwood tree comes from the sequoia family and is the

Under the soil of the forest there is a huge layer of redwood roots. Roots from a redwood tree may
only grow 3 feet down but they can grow up to 20 feet out away from the trunk of the tree. The roots
of many redwood trees are grown together any many times, when a tree starts to lean, the thick layer
of roots can hold it up. When redwoods start getting cut down this can ruin the layer of roots that
covers almost all of the forest. Then redwood trees would not have much support as they do and
would be more inclined to fall over. Cutting down redwoods would also lower the chance of
reproduction. Redwood trees only reproduce every so often, this process could take over five years.
First the redwood drops acorns that fall to the forest floor. Then after some time, a larger type or
acorns is dropped and releases pollen which pollinates the first acorn (Hemmerich 2014). Many of
the seeds do not grow at all. Only about one in every 200 seeds will grow and become a full sized
redwood tree. Of course this process does not happen overnight, it can take up to 100 years for a
seed to grow and become a mature redwood tree (Hemmerich 2014).
I believe that we should protect all the redwoods and trees form the Sequoia family. Most of the old
growth forests are under protection by either, part of a national park, or private property.
Approximately 90 percent of all old growth forests are inside national park borders (Hemmerich
2014). There are no

one of the three stoplights of the town. All was fine and dandy in this town, that is until the big, bad

How Did Geography Shaped Mendocino
How geography shaped Mendocino Have you ever wondered how geography has shaped

Mendocino has been known for its beautiful coastline and the huge redwood trees. But not only are
they both beautiful attractions they both have their own history that impacted Mendocino to make it
is where it is today. Mendocino used to be a huge redwood logging town. The loggers would cut
down the redwoods and then put them in the rivers so they would float down to the ocean where the
trees would be put into boats and then sailed off to San Francisco where they were building a whole
new city because of the gold rush. Because Mendocino was right along the ocean it was easy to
trade because it was easy for the ships to come in. It also helped with the logging and how they
loaded them onto the boats. As you can see that the redwoods played a big part in Mendocino ...

Edward Abbey's Eco-Defense
The earth screams in terror as we rape and brutalize her daily! Red Woods in California are towering
and reaching towards the sky, proud and strong. Are they destined for a prominent man's floor?
Ancient redwood trees are enormous. They tower nearly three hundred feet into the sky, making
men look like ants as they scurry around their massive trunks. The redwood forest also has its own
ecosystem full of unique life. The earth is beautifully aged and teaming with magnificent life.
Perhaps, just maybe, saving our home, our natural resources, and the last remaining ancient giant
redwoods is worth breaking the law and using less than flattering tactics. A mind provoking,
nonfiction piece of literature, by Edward Abbey, called Eco–Defense writes about the constant
looting of the entire earth, which could lead to the death of our world, and ultimately, ourselves.
Through the use of bulldozers, chainsaws, and dynamite, we as humans, are destroying our very
home. Abbey poses the question, do you have the right to defend your home if someone beats your
door down with an axe and brutalizes your family? He answers, yes, you have that right and
obligation to protect yourself and your family. Therefore, we have the right, and the duty, to defend
our home, earth, from certain death and destruction from abuse. ... Show more content on

The redwood trees around me were around 40 feet tall and probably higher, even though I felt like I
was half way there I still could not see the peak of the enormous giants, three thirds of the way I
stumbled upon a problem for weak branches were in the way of me reaching the top, as the heights
were beginning to hit me I had decided to come down from the tree as the branches blocked me
from continuing. Running out of breath and the slash, that almost showed a piece of bone, in my leg
still bleeding it just prevented me to keep going. The only objects I had in my backpack were the
two ibuprofen and the extra rags left from my shirt. I sat underneath the redwood tree as a tear ran
down my left cheek and touching my lip the salty taste and little by little I began to remember the
good moments I had in life.

The Movie ' Redwood Highway ' Release Essay
The movie, Redwood Highway was release in April 2013. The main character, Marie Vaughan
(Shirley Knight), is an older woman who resides in the Mountain Meadows Retirement Community
in Oregon, alienated from her family and unhappy with her circumstances. Marie's character is
portrayed as a cantankerous, stubborn and lonely old woman. Marie aggrieved she was forced to be
placed in the retirement community, Mountain Meadows, by her son, Michael. Marie takes a long
walk to the downtown instead of around the retirement community grounds against the concerned
son, Michael's recommendation. Marie's behavior may be perceived as she is rebellion toward her
son, but I believe she is trying to maintain only independence she has left, being able to walk. As
Quadagno explained personality influences the way an individual adapts to changes associated with
normal aging. (Quadagno, 2013, pg. 169) In my opinion, Marie's character portrayed a strongly
proud woman who resisted losing independence.
The Movie, Redwood Highway, showed two stereotypes of aging from the Quadagno's Aging and
the life course: An introduction to social gerontology book. First, most retirees are lonely and
depressed. Second, the aged are isolated from family members. (Quadagno, 2013, pg. 14) Marie
believes she is thrown in an old people's home by her son, Michael who treats her as she is
incapable of making decisions and alienated from her family that made her unhappy with her
circumstances. Marie didn't seem to

Creative Writing: Limiting Access To Redwood
It was near dark when William walked into the farmhouse. He said hello to Mary, filled a rocks
glass with ice, and walked to his office on the second floor. He closed the blinds in the window
before booting up his computer. Mary banned personal electronic devices on Blue Hills. Not that it
mattered; there hadn't been cellular service or Wi–Fi hotspots on the estate for many years. William
didn't want anyone to see the familiar blue glow of a computer monitor through his office windows,
lest he be called a hypocrite. He poured himself three fingers of Jim Beam from a bottle in his
bottom desk drawer and waited for the computer to boot up. He clicked a link to a secure satellite

The Fight Over the Redwoods Essay
The Fight Over The Redwoods
Abstract
Pacific Lumber Company, founded in 1869, oversees the careful maintenance and logging of the
world's most productive timberland. Pacific Lumber holds the last private forest of old–growth
Redwood. In addition to it's unique hardwood, the Redwood forest hosts an ecosystem supporting
virgin ground never logged, and the endangered Marbled Murrelet. After being purchased in 1985
by the Maxxam firm and it's owner Mr. Hurwitz, Pacific Lumber tripled logging volume and looked
to log the previously privately protected Redwood forest. Due to the use of junk–bonds for financial
backing, Maxxam Inc. needed to dramatically increase revenue streams to make interest payments
which resulted in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If the ecosystem supporting our way of life collapses, so does our way of life.
Question 2: Although land ownership is an individual right, what takes place on that land is still a
concern for governing agencies. In this case, the impact to ecosystems covers an area greater than
just the area owned by one individual or firm. Controlling the impacts of the landowners operation
mitigates the impact to other landowners in the area. Owning land still requires a reasonable person
to behave in a manner consistent with the law of the land. In this analysis, a gentlemen named
Hurwitz backed Maxxam Inc. to purchase Pacific Lumber. Hungry for profits, he altered Pacific
Lumber's focus to the short term profitability of the firm, instead of long term sustainment of the
business. Poor business practices put Maxxam Inc. in a position requiring a fixed amount of income
to pay loan interest and fees. Hurwitz never assessed whether or not he could sustain payment with
current operations and was forced to increase operations to make profitability still viable. (The
Terrestrial Environment, 1998)
Question 3: Mainstream environmentalists were correct to stop Pacific Lumber from ravaging it's
timberland. Prior business practices provided ecosystem shelter for endangered species and
protected virgin forest from being logged. Changes to federal

Summary Of John Muir's 'Save The Redwoods'
John Muir, a brilliant Transcendentalist, has written hundreds of enlightening environmental essay
to emphasize the adamant need to save these sacred kings of the forests, the Redwoods. Within
Muir's vivid and emotional entries, specifically "Save the Redwoods", John utilizes rhetorical
devices such as personification, analogy, and Religious allusion in order to express the vital need to
save the trees. In the serious yet optimistic journal entry, John Muir employs the idea of spiritual
duty, and personification, as humans to preserves the continuously killed Redwoods. Muir has seen
the death of hundreds of trees and knows the irreparable damage it could cause if the damage
continues, "...kings of the forest, the noblest of a noble race, rightly belong to the world, but as they
are in California we cannot escape responsibility as their guardians" (paragraph, 6). The author's use
of "noblest of a noble race" and "responsibility as their guardian" evokes an intense need to not only
protest the killing of these giants but to nurture and advocate respect for the Redwoods. As humans,
Muir demands an explanation as to our mistreatment of the sacred creatures and will take no other
answers than of one that demonstrates total and complete love for the trees. He expects those who
are damaging God's prized forests to questions themselves and to examine their actions so that they
can correct their mistakes. Another example of personification that appeals to the trees is John
Muir's description of the insurgence of rebellion against the murder of the trees, and the rejoicing of
the behemoths, "... this righteous uprising in defense of God's trees in the midst of exciting politics
and wars... and every Sequoia... has heard the good news and is waving its branches for joy"
(paragraph, 1). The words in this sentence serve primarily to illustrate the tree's emotions. By giving
the trees the ability to feel and exhibit joy over their possibly brighter future, it gives people a sense
of pride about alleviating some of the Redwood's pain. As Muir has demonstrated many times
before, it is the people's duty to cherish the Redwoods; there will never be a moment when this job
is completed. John Muir also uses an analogy to bare

Laws are implemented for the betterment of the community. However, a law was put back in play
when eight redwood trees were planted in the backyard of Ms. Carolynn Bissett and Mr. Richard
Treanor overshadowing solar panels of their neighbor, Mr. Mark Vargas, who installed the panels on
year 2001. This generated a conflict between the two neighbors. Resulting to Mr. Mark Vargas filing
a dispute against Ms. Carolynn Bissett and Mr Richard Treanor. The California Solar Shade Act of
1978 was used against the couple. The law provides protection to solar panel system owners from

Vargas used the law to get rid of the trees that he did not like and to keep his solar panels for his
own benefit. To which the law was not used for the betterment of the whole community but to only
make one person happy. In a way that he intently installed the power panels without consulting his
neighbor about it and knowing that the trees will cast a shadow over it. In addition, his willingness
to cut more trees the next year is a sign that he just wanted to get rid of all the trees for good. How
can we allow a law to cut down trees that is much beneficial for everyone than a solar panel? People
always say that cutting trees is not good for our environment, for it somehow controls temperature
of our surroundings, clean the polluted air and most of all prevents climate change. In the end, they
know that the court only favored Vargas because of the law, but without it Mr. Treanor would win

Redwood Library Essay
In the United States, public buildings, such as libraries, banks, or government buildings, tie into the
towns and cities they are helping in the community. The aesthetic for many of these public buildings
follow a similar pattern based on neoclassicism elements. A great example to the start of this trend
in public building aesthetic is the Redwood Library in Newport, RI designed by Peter Harrison. I
picked this building because of its aesthetic and architecture. The Redwood Library was the start of
the use of neoclassicism elements that began to influence future public buildings and properties of
its time. The American colonial library was completed in 1750 and followed at Georgian
architecture design. This design consisted of merging of architectural aspects from pattern books
mainly from Greek and Roman origins (Zawadzki). The Redwood Library itself was based on a
"Roman Doric temple" in Andrea Palladio's Architecture. There are doric order columns with a
portico and wings with a very triangle–looking roof (Craven). Although based on designs made of

Aldo Leopold And The Expansion Of The Redwood National Park
Aldo Leopold's idea of land ethics is that " a thing is right when it tends to preserve the integrity,
stability, and beauty of the biotic community. It is wrong when it tends otherwise". In the early
1970's, a rising concern for the Redwood Forest grew as nearby logging and other human activities
started to become a threat to the Redwood National Park by encroaching on its' boundaries. By
1968, it was estimated that nearly 90 percent of the original redwoods trees had been lost due to
logging. Congress stepped into action after several environmental studies showed that the existing
redwood trees could be endangered from the rapid deforestation in the surrounding area. The

"This was my favorite tree. I used to come here all the time," said Eric"(Masters) and another quote
"In life, naturalist and California State Parks docent Scott Peden found peace and purpose amid the
towering redwoods of Big Basin Redwoods State Park." (Masters). These quotes all show how the

Lastly, the climate in Santa Cruz has affected the people very much. The Climate is usually very
mild. According to weather.com the coldest it has been this year for the high was 50, and the hottest
high for the year is 104. Another quote suggests from US Climate Data the average temperature in

Trees over greed Two neighboring families, both alike in eco–friendly tendencies, are separated by

families' green habits are pitted against each other when they end up conflicting. For the Treanor

Vargas is content to cut down only two of the Treanor's eight redwoods. That does not seem overly
unreasonable, being only a fourth of the tress are being cut down. As an environmentalist, he should
not be flaunting his right to treat these redwoods as public nuisances. He betrays his green ideals
with his wishes to chop down these trees, and brings light to an outdated law that others might
consider using. With that being said, this will spark a movement of people attempting to use the
Solar Shade Control Act. First, it may be only one or two said trees. However, this disagreement
exposes an act that can easily be taken advantage of. Others can take on this idea and get their
neighbor to cut down even more trees, and by this time, an abundance of trees are cut down and
neighbors across the nation will become the leading cause of tree death. Mr. Vargas should have
seen the risks in the investment he made. You're never in complete control over how much sunlight
will shine on your property. According to the Solar Shade Act, "The law seeks to prevent property
owners from allowing trees to shade an existing solar energy system, provided the shading trees
were planted after the solar system was installed." (Go Solar California). Mr. Vargas uses this Solar
Shade Act, yet it is clear that the requirements for this act are "after the solar system was installed."
Using this act should be considered invalid in this

Redwood Curtain Character Analysis
There is one thing in this world that belongs to one person and one person entirely. With it, they feel
connected, grounded to something that keeps them strong. Without it, they cannot feel complete.
This is Identity. One's identity comes from the past, their origins and their past experiences. Identity
is made up of all these to create a capable individual. Redwood Curtain, a play written by Lanford
Wilson, explores a girl on her journey to find a missing piece in order to complete her agonizing
cultural puzzle so that she could regain her feeling of wholeness. The girl reached a peak of her life

Decisions regarding environmental problems require both knowledge and values. Placing value on
specific issues can be sorted into four categories of justification: utilitarian, ecological, aesthetic and
moral. California Blue focuses on the interplay of environmental issues and ethics emphasizing the
conflict between industry and species preservation. Timber cutting in the Northwest United States is
a mainstay of the economy. Although clear cutting is not as environmentally sensitive as selective
harvesting and redwood cutting, some is essential to America's continued growth and prosperity. To
ban timber operations and to throw people out of work, all to preserve an endangered blue butterfly,
is to test the limits and logic of ecological priorities. The national policy of preserving endangered
species serves the purpose of promoting biological diversity, which if not followed might threaten
the ecosystem. This national policy of species preservation is a matter of social policy balanced with
the competing interests of the local economy and human needs. Under the utilitarian approach one
must balance the benefits of species preservation with the detriment of stopping human activity
which threatens that species or the environment in which the

this information was by taking notes while I was listening to them present to the whole class. The
first one I will be talking about is Moss's MTB Project. In Moss's Inquiry he was talking about
Mountain Biking in the Redwood Forest. Through out his presentation I learnt that 30% of mountain

some people see a sign saying that "this trail is closed due to logging". This really stupid because
you can get badly hurt by debri on the trail and falling trees. ... Show more content on

them in the heel of their shoes. The reason they take them apart is so that they can fit. And when the
guards aren't looking, the prisoners organise a fight. They then get recorded and put of the social
media. I think a good solution to this would be to check their shoes or wave a metal detector over
their whole body before they walk inside the

Redwood National Park Research Paper

  • 1. Redwood National Park Research Paper Today was another beautiful day in the Redwood National Park. The park is in Northern California, near the coast, and very close to the Oregon border. So, it was a little breezy but, it's summer so for the most part it was quite warm and sunny. As the park ranger walked us through the Redwood Forest the birds were chirping the air was clean and fresh, there were a few clouds in the sky. It was the perfect weather for a walk through the woods. Today, my family and I learned many interesting facts about Redwood National Park, while we took a short tour around the park with a park ranger. We learned, when the park was established and why, why this park is a national treasure, and why national parks are so important. The first thing we ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... National parks protect and preserve nature's natural beauty. The vast, open land provides a safe place that allows native plants and animals to thrive in their natural environment. National parks not only protect plants, animals, and the natural beauty, but they also protect a place that might be important to people. Someone's ancestors might have walked through these very redwood forests. Thankfully, the forests are now protected and they would get a chance to experience how it felt like to walk through the amazing, tall, beautiful Redwood trees. Thanks to the amount of vegetation in national parks, they also help us clean the air because of the large amounts of carbon dioxide the vegetation releases, and oxygen it soaks in. So, national parks also help the environment, not just protect it, that's pretty cool. I guess it's their way of saying thank you to us for protecting them for the rest of their lives. National parks aren't all about nature though, they're also great places to visit, relax, and have fun with your family and friends. All national parks provide an abundance of exciting activities you can enjoy with your family, not just Redwood National Park. The final reason why national parks are so important is, they allow people to get educated on the world around but, in a fun and entertaining ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. The Redwood Tree-Personal Narrative I have hunted monsters in the depths of Lake Erie. I have searched for fairies in the Redwood Forest. I have solved mysteries at the bottom of the ocean. No matter how different they may seem, all these adventures have one common thread. My brother. When he was born the doctor said he would never walk, talk, or read. Receiving this news broke my parents hearts. Even with this disastrous news they set out to prove him wrong. They decided that they would provide him with every opportunity to strive. By the time I was born, four years later, he could walk and talk like any other child and he still continues to learn new skills to this day. When I was first born, my brother called me baby girl because he was not able to pronounce my name. Wherever I was, that was where he was. I was his favorite person. He would spend hours just staring at me in my crib waiting for me to do something. After I learned to talk my brother and I had our own secret language. Even though it was actually poorly spoken English. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. My parents would complain that we never made any sense, but we would laugh and play all day without a care in the world. The person that could just brighten up a room. I got to know this new brother and found out that he is not that different. I forgot that everything changes. • 4. Synthesis Paper: It's All About Trees Synthesis Paper: It's All About Trees Trees are an extraordinary form of life here on Earth that we as humans fail to appreciate. We find ourselves "too busy" to learn about the living organisms that provide us with so much, including life. I have taken it upon myself to help inform readers of just how unique and important trees can be. Throughout the course of the blog posts, the topic of the importance, purposes, and history of various tree species is discussed. The five major tree species that were written about in the blog are: the baobab, the coast redwood, the Socotra dragon's blood tree, the Moringa oleifera, and the oak tree. Each blog post described the significances of each of these species. The significances included those such as ways in which the tree is or has been used, the dimensions of the trees, the importance of the tree to natives and other individuals in history, as ... According to the writer of the text from Kruger Park, a Baobab tree can grow to be twenty meters tall with a trunk so large that a minimum of forty people holding hands stretch around the trunk. The author, through his use of facts, portrays a beneficial point of view of the species that creates a sense of understanding of the purpose and importance of the tree to the Native people. The same author from Kruger Park wrote, "When bare of leaves, the spreading branches of the Baobab look like roots sticking up into the air, rather as if it had been planted upside–down." The baobab tree has only two main characteristics that set it apart from other tree species. These two characteristics are: its overall size and its odd shape making it appear to be upside–down. The baobab tree, however, is not the only tree known primarily for its immense size. The coast redwood is a large tree native to the United States that is popularly known for its great ... The forests that surround us and are a crucial part of our eco system has developed over millions of years. Even since the age of dinosaurs, we have forests which went depleted and replenished, going from age to age. The ecosystem of the forests provides a home to all animals and not only do we take their home, we are not replacing them. The animals who lose their home in the wake of cutting trees, will eventually come close to cities. Not only the forests are a source of oxygen for all living beings, they also help curtail the greenhouse gases and keep global warming in control. 3. Identify the areas that need improvement In my view there is a lot we can do for the improvement of the forest such as planting more trees, having government restrictions on companies that are into wood cutting business. The forests we have are one of the most essential sources of resources. There can be places of forests which can be a huge penalty for companies who try to cross the line. A moral responsibility from the side of companies can also be an ideal way as to them planting trees simultaneously or have some donation campaigns running around from which the money generated is used to plant ... The victim, 8–year old Susan Nason, was raped and murdered by George Franklin in 1969. But it wasn't until 20 years after this horrendous crime that George Franklin was found guilty. He was guilty of first degree murder. This case gained attention because it was the first case ever to determine a man's fate based off of the resurfacing of repressed memory. Eileen Franklin, George Franklin's daughter, recalled having a flashback of her best friend, Susan's murder. It was the look in her daughter's eyes that triggered this memory. She contacted the authorities and shortly after she found herself testifying against her father. Her testimony of this was, "I saw my father approaching Susan, his ... Some believed that there was no physical evidence to show that Eileen's recovered memory was true. However, others believed that this crime was too traumatizing for Eileen and resulted in repressing this particular memory. But how could she completely block this memory for 20 years? "Franklin–Lipsker testified that she repressed the memory for 20 years because her dad threatened to kill her too" (ChicagoTribune,1990). Ultimately, George Franklin was convicted to life in prison. But this case took a turn when 6 years after his imprisonment, he was a free man. Due to DNA evidence, George Franklin's name was cleared, and he walked out of prison. Repressed Memory In my opinion, recovering very traumatic memories, can be caused by finding yourself in a similar situation. Perhaps even experiencing certain feelings can lead to recovering any repressed memories. If a repressed memory is recovered I don't believe you view the world the same way you once did. Hirshfield published "Tree" in 2000 as a free verse poem, divided into 4 stanzas and 4 sentences to convey the nature world. The poem represents a "young redwood" (line 2) growing near a house, near a kitchen window. The redwood is already scraping against the window frame of the house, reminding the reader of the "foolish" (line 1) idea of letting it grow there. Humans were created to be one with nature, but as they evolved as a species, they were obligated to choose between the materialistic world or the world of nature. Hirshfield writes this poem in second person to give life to the poem so that the poem speaks to the reader. The poem starts by accusing the reader of letting the redwood grow near the house. "It is foolish" (line 1) lets the reader know that nature should not be growing this close to your home. Hirshfield takes the liberty to talk straight to the reader through the speaker in telling them that it is nonsense to let nature be so close to a material object such as a house. The reader can visually see a "young redwood// grow next to a house" (line 2, 3). The tree starts to symbolize the beauty of nature growing against the materialistic world. A new sentence leads into the second stanza to introduce a new idea; it shifts the attention of the poem from the imagery of the redwood growing against the house to the shortness of the ... Looking outside my window, I could see a blur of parched grass and vast paddocks of sheep drinking from lakes. I was in a dim mood. My parents had sent me away from our home town Braedon to spend time with my grandmother in the country town of Redwood, because, as they bluntly put it, she wouldn't be around for many more years. I didn't mind visiting my grandpa, but I hated that the fact that I had to travel out of Braedon. I can still picture the welcoming locals, smiling at me and the other tourists..." For the remaining hour of the trip, I reflected on my opinion of travelling. All my life, I lived in the city and due to my routined lifestyle, I was rarely anywhere unfamiliar. I disliked travelling as I feared being alone, facing something new. Yet after talking to Chris, I began to realise the golden opportunity I had to experience all the world had to offer to me. Eventually, the train had come to a halt at my stop – Redwood. The deserted train station, which catered for the whole town, was tiny, with only two short platforms. Along the flat landscape, I could see rows of houses and the town's church, the steeple proudly and loftily reaching to the clear blue sky. I farewelled Chris and got off the train with my suitcase. The air was crisp, clean and clear. I thought of the dusty city air and gridlocked streets with car fumes. How big was this difference? Muir Woods contains a large portion of Redwood Canyon and is near the base of Mount Tamalpais. The park was established in 1907 when William Kent, a California congressman and philanthropist, gifted 298 acres of costal redwoods to the federal government in attempt to preserve the area from development. The now historic redwoods were the target of the North Coast Water Company who planned to build a new reservoir. Roots from a redwood tree may only grow 3 feet down but they can grow up to 20 feet out away from the trunk of the tree. The roots of many redwood trees are grown together any many times, when a tree starts to lean, the thick layer of roots can hold it up. When redwoods start getting cut down this can ruin the layer of roots that covers almost all of the forest. Then redwood trees would not have much support as they do and would be more inclined to fall over. Cutting down redwoods would also lower the chance of reproduction. Redwood trees only reproduce every so often, this process could take over five years. First the redwood drops acorns that fall to the forest floor. Then after some time, a larger type or acorns is dropped and releases pollen which pollinates the first acorn (Hemmerich 2014). Many of the seeds do not grow at all. Only about one in every 200 seeds will grow and become a full sized redwood tree. Of course this process does not happen overnight, it can take up to 100 years for a seed to grow and become a mature redwood tree (Hemmerich 2014). I believe that we should protect all the redwoods and trees form the Sequoia family. Most of the old growth forests are under protection by either, part of a national park, or private property. Second, the aged are isolated from family members. • 24. Summary Of John Muir's 'Save The Redwoods' John Muir, a brilliant Transcendentalist, has written hundreds of enlightening environmental essay to emphasize the adamant need to save these sacred kings of the forests, the Redwoods. Within Muir's vivid and emotional entries, specifically "Save the Redwoods", John utilizes rhetorical devices such as personification, analogy, and Religious allusion in order to express the vital need to save the trees. In the serious yet optimistic journal entry, John Muir employs the idea of spiritual duty, and personification, as humans to preserves the continuously killed Redwoods. Muir has seen the death of hundreds of trees and knows the irreparable damage it could cause if the damage continues, "...kings of the forest, the noblest of a noble race, rightly belong to the world, but as they are in California we cannot escape responsibility as their guardians" (paragraph, 6). The author's use of "noblest of a noble race" and "responsibility as their guardian" evokes an intense need to not only protest the killing of these giants but to nurture and advocate respect for the Redwoods. As humans, Muir demands an explanation as to our mistreatment of the sacred creatures and will take no other answers than of one that demonstrates total and complete love for the trees. He expects those who are damaging God's prized forests to questions themselves and to examine their actions so that they can correct their mistakes. Another example of personification that appeals to the trees is John Muir's description of the insurgence of rebellion against the murder of the trees, and the rejoicing of the behemoths, "... this righteous uprising in defense of God's trees in the midst of exciting politics and wars... and every Sequoia... has heard the good news and is waving its branches for joy" (paragraph, 1). The words in this sentence serve primarily to illustrate the tree's emotions. By giving the trees the ability to feel and exhibit joy over their possibly brighter future, it gives people a sense of pride about alleviating some of the Redwood's pain. As Muir has demonstrated many times before, it is the people's duty to cherish the Redwoods; there will never be a moment when this job is completed. John Muir also uses an analogy to bare ... Originally when opened, the library had a "collection of 751 titles" with topics over "Religion, Philosophy, Law, Architecture, Classics, Agriculture and Medicine" from London (History, Redwood Library). This was a large collection of knowledge for the public in colonial America. Noticed by Thomas Jefferson, the library was framed as the prime example of what a public building should be (History). • 27. Aldo Leopold And The Expansion Of The Redwood National Park Aldo Leopold's idea of land ethics is that " a thing is right when it tends to preserve the integrity, stability, and beauty of the biotic community. It is wrong when it tends otherwise". In the early 1970's, a rising concern for the Redwood Forest grew as nearby logging and other human activities started to become a threat to the Redwood National Park by encroaching on its' boundaries. By 1968, it was estimated that nearly 90 percent of the original redwoods trees had been lost due to logging. Congress stepped into action after several environmental studies showed that the existing redwood trees could be endangered from the rapid deforestation in the surrounding area. • 29. Trees Over Greed Case Study Trees over greed Two neighboring families, both alike in eco–friendly tendencies, are separated by one fence and a mere opinion of what benefits nature more. The Treanor/Bisset and Mr. Vargas families' green habits are pitted against each other when they end up conflicting. For the Treanor family, their towering redwoods planted eight years ago render the Mr. Vargas family solar–panels futile, by blocking their precious Sunnyvale sunlight. The irony lies within the fact that the dispute was conspired between families with a common goal to account for the environments prosperity. Though the Treanor's redwood trees have been happily rooted in the backyard for years, an outdated law persists as the Mr. Vargas' only defense in this case that will ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Vargas is content to cut down only two of the Treanor's eight redwoods. That does not seem overly unreasonable, being only a fourth of the tress are being cut down. As an environmentalist, he should not be flaunting his right to treat these redwoods as public nuisances. He betrays his green ideals with his wishes to chop down these trees, and brings light to an outdated law that others might consider using. With that being said, this will spark a movement of people attempting to use the Solar Shade Control Act. First, it may be only one or two said trees. However, this disagreement exposes an act that can easily be taken advantage of. Others can take on this idea and get their neighbor to cut down even more trees, and by this time, an abundance of trees are cut down and neighbors across the nation will become the leading cause of tree death. Mr. Vargas should have seen the risks in the investment he made. You're never in complete control over how much sunlight will shine on your property. According to the Solar Shade Act, "The law seeks to prevent property owners from allowing trees to shade an existing solar energy system, provided the shading trees were planted after the solar system was installed." (Go Solar California). Mr. Vargas uses this Solar Shade Act, yet it is clear that the requirements for this act are "after the solar system was installed." Using this act should be considered invalid in this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

With it, they feel connected, grounded to something that keeps them strong. Without it, they cannot feel complete. This is Identity. One's identity comes from the past, their origins and their past experiences. Identity is made up of all these to create a capable individual. Redwood Curtain, a play written by Lanford Wilson, explores a girl on her journey to find a missing piece in order to complete her agonizing cultural puzzle so that she could regain her feeling of wholeness. From prior research, "adolescent's still need a secure base" (Johnson, page number) in their journey to finding who they actually are. In Geri's case, she is at the point of her life where she is looking for that missing part of her base–her father, the man whom she shared half her DNA with. Geri sets off on this journey, leaving behind her whole world as to find who she is. Geri does not have much information, but she uses the little information she gather with hopes of that bit growing and allowing her the chance to know more about her past. She seems to yearn for learning about where her other half has come from since she only knows her birth mother. This is especially true during the adolescent years when the quest for identity emerges." For Geri, she has her past ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

As the youngest son of a father who was a champion athlete, John has always felt pressured to excel in his sport of choice, distance running. With help of Miss Merrill, his biology teacher, he returns home to a "separate peace" with his father and a new understanding of the trade–offs between loyalty and responsibility. Decisions regarding environmental problems require both knowledge and values. Placing value on specific issues can be sorted into four categories of justification: utilitarian, ecological, aesthetic and moral. California Blue focuses on the interplay of environmental issues and ethics emphasizing the conflict between industry and species preservation. Timber cutting in the Northwest United States is a mainstay of the economy. Although clear cutting is not as environmentally sensitive as selective harvesting and redwood cutting, some is essential to America's continued growth and prosperity. To ban timber operations and to throw people out of work, all to preserve an endangered blue butterfly, is to test the limits and logic of ecological priorities. The national policy of preserving endangered species serves the purpose of promoting biological diversity, which if not followed might threaten the ecosystem. This national policy of species preservation is a matter of social policy balanced with the competing interests of the local economy and human needs. Under the utilitarian approach one must balance the benefits of species preservation with the detriment of stopping human activity which threatens that species or the environment in which the ... At the time, loggers were threatening the already sparse population of California's giant redwoods. Muir's essay expresses his growing concern for the future of California's ecology and emphasizes the need for swift human intervention. You do not see the tallest trees in the world everyday. Although, if I want to get even remotely close to seeing them every day, the least I can do is keep track of my adventures inside of a journal so I can read them later on in my life and remember the time I had on this trip. I went to Redwood National Park and I experienced a true, American national treasure I left Monday, August 22 because I wanted to witness the gorgeous leaves the redwoods produce before the dawn of autumn. The ride took two days and I arrived on a Friday. California's northern coast is quite far from Illinois, and I wanted to make my way up there by car so I can store the variety of items that I definitely will make good use of in the park. Although, if I was to travel by air, I would fly into Sacramento, the closest major airport. I packed various items to make my trip easier such as my mountain bike on my bike rack and, just in case, a walking stick if no good sticks are around for me to use. And economic cars by Matt Crockett. I will be Talking about these topics because I found them interesting and I have some interesting information about them. The way I found out this information was by taking notes while I was listening to them present to the whole class. The first one I will be talking about is Moss's MTB Project. In Moss's Inquiry he was talking about Mountain Biking in the Redwood Forest. Through out his presentation I learnt that 30% of mountain biking trails are in the forest. I found this interesting because I have only rode my bike in the forest had haven't yet found a MTB trail that is not in the forest. I think that their are not many trails in the forest because the forests have been logged for their valuable wood. I also found it interesting how some people see a sign saying that "this trail is closed due to logging".
