Essay on Two Business A2 Level Critical Path Analysis...
Q1) Discuss the benefits to Balfour Beatty of using critical path analysis in order to plan its
construction projects. (15 marks) Critical path analysis identifies the most efficient and cost
effective way of completing a complex project. The various activities which together will make up
the project are identified, and the order of these activities are identified. Then, the duration of each
activity is estimated and these factors are then arranged as a network or graph, showing the whole
project from start to finish, and showing which tasks can happen at the same time. The sequence of
tasks which have to be done one after another with no gaps in between is called the Critical Path.

Q2) Evaluate the main difficulties faced by Balfour Beatty and other construction companies in their
use of CPA to plan their projects. (15 marks) Critical path analysis identifies the most efficient and
cost effective way of completing a complex project. The various activities which together will make
up the project are identified, and the order of these activities are identified. Then, the duration of
each activity is estimated and these factors are then arranged as a network or graph, showing the
whole project from start to finish, and showing which tasks can happen at the same time. The
sequence of tasks which have to be done one after another with no gaps in between is called the
Critical Path. One difficulty of using Critical Path Analysis is that unless critical activities are
identified and supervised closely, there'll be delays to the whole project. Critical path analysis puts
pressure on mangers to manage effectively and meet deadlines. If, for example, Balfour Beatty was
unable to get hold of a particular piece of equipment when needed, the whole project could be
delayed by the amount of time that it takes to get the equipment. This means that there will be many
employees being paid with no output and the whole project is delayed with doesn't usually bode
well with the customer. A second difficulty of using Critical

The World Of World War I
Prior to the beginning of World War I, the world economy was held up by four pillars: the gold
standard, free trade, communication and transportation, and capital and labor labor mobility. After
facing two world wars and a worldwide economic depression, economists and governments from
around the world implemented several development strategies. Some strategists tried to rebuild the
order from before World War I in a more flexible and stable way while others bucked the traditional
world order all together in an attempt to develop more quickly. While import–substituting
industrialization provided short term benefits and long–term problems to the nations that practiced
it, the Bretton Woods System provided sustainable economic growth to ... Show more content on

Nations that practiced ISI could never entirely eliminate their dependence on the world economy,
and ISI's bias against exports left nations with very little export revenue which could be used to pay
for things that the nation absolutely had to import. These balance of payments crises hurt domestic
economies, often leading to social unrest and coups. Compounding the problems caused by balance
of payments problems, nations which practiced ISI also tended to have high inflation rates as well as
high income–inequality caused by privileging industrialization at the expense of agricultural classes.
Ultimately, ISI nations began experiencing massive social, political, and economic problems which
stifled further development.
After World War II, the Western economic powers implemented the Bretton Woods System, an
attempt to concurrently return to, build upon, and strengthen the pre–World War I economic system.
The stringency of the Gold Standard was replaced by an economic system in which currencies were
tied together by the more flexible US dollar, which was itself backed by gold. Free trade was
reimplemented by GATT, which would later become the WTO. Under the Bretton Woods System,
the world saw an incredible amount of post–war economic growth. Jeffry Frieden points out that in
the postwar period, advanced capitalist nations "grew three times as fast as in the interwar years and
twice as fast as before World War I". The Bretton Woods System allowed for

The Ambassador Program is Necessary Because People Must...
Insightful Guides
When you were younger, did you ever get separated from your parent and not know what to do or
whom to go to for assistance, and because you didn't know what to do you just wandered aimlessly
around? I know I have, and that's what a lot of people who are lost like that do. In fact, that happens
a lot here with new students. Yes, there are the peer helpers but that only gives the new student one
guide for one day. And that guide doesn't even show them their classes, they take them to the classes
they have and then the new student, the very next day, is on their own to find their own way. But
wouldn't it be great if they knew someone, or multiple people who could help them on the spot,
almost anytime during the school ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Their independence will be not only in finding their way around but also in knowing where to locate
things and who people are. Now many people argue "they're in middle school," and "they're older
now," meaning we have to be independent anyway. But even though we are older, that doesn't mean
we always know where things are or we always know what to do. That's like saying a newborn can
survive without caretaker. It's as simple as this; newborns know very little about the world and how
it works as to new students knowing very little about new schools and how they work. So regardless
of maturity or age, people need to be dependent before they can be independent, and the ambassador
program is a good form of that temporary dependence.
Another benefit of the ambassador program would be that it would allow new students to become
comfortable and gain a form of confidence. It's important for new student/staff to be comfortable
because if they weren't think of how difficult it would be for them to focus not only in class but just
in general. And when students become comfortable and confident enough, that's when they will be
able to focus on things like work. But it's often thought that being comfortable shouldn't prioritize
over classes and what matters is getting work done. But what most don't realize is that it's virtually
impossible for people like us to focus on work if we feel out of place in our everyday environment.
But this program would allow

Understanding Latin America's International and Economic...
Prior to analyzing the ISI (Import Substitution Industrialization) model, it's benefits as well as its
shortcomings, a small introduction of how it came to be and why must be provided. As a product of
the 1930s economic crisis and wear and tear of the liberal model, ISI appears in Latin America as
another economic option, proposed by ECLA (Economic Commission for Latin America, dependent
of the UN) as a means of bringing Latin America out of stagnation and work towards
industrialization to eliminate its dependency on agriculture which was seen as vulnerable.
There are two critical ways in which this model must be examined, theoretically as well as its
concrete outcomes and policy implications within Latin American states. By looking at ... Show

Therefore, it was believed that "Latin America instead of following outward–looking development
path should instead pursue an ISI policy as the centre–piece for a new inward–directed development
strategy" (Kay 5), following the beginning footsteps of the developed states.
Although its main goal was to strengthen the national economy to better compete in the global
market, ISI has had very controversial results. Positively speaking, it has resulted in a decrease in
imports, which has favoured certain national industries such as electric materials for construction,
textiles, chemicals, etc., the nationalization of natural resources, betterment of term of trade, state
intervention in economics (which led to the development of education, health and employment),
strengthening of social organizations, but most importantly, the consolidation of the middle class.
On a negative note, these nations led to become greatly dependent on technology, there was an
increase of external capital control over developed areas, an under qualified labour force for factory
jobs, increase in prices of manufactured goods and inflation, migration from rural to urban areas and
as a result an increase in social problems, and finally, the industrial sector did not bother to conquer
external markets which essentially contradicted the whole purpose of ISI. For these reasons ISI was
seen as a

The Resource Dependency Theory Of Wal Mart Stores, Inc.
For this assignment, the writer commences by exploring "Resource Dependency Theory" as the
understanding of this hypothesis is vital. Next, an overview will be undertaken in terms of the
selected organisation –that is, Wal–Mart Stores, Inc. After, the paper will present a brief description
of the relationship between Walmart and its suppliers. It then goes on to highlight the managerial
bridging strategies that the company uses in dealing with the organisations it depends on for
resources. These strategies are: negotiation, contracts, interlocking directorates, joint ventures,
strategic alliances, and mergers and acquisitions.
About Resource Dependency Theory
Hillman (2009) indicated that "Resource Dependence Theory" refers to a business entity as an open
mechanism that is reliant on contingencies in the external environment (p.2). That is, the theory
views a business in relation to its resource dependences with other businesses in the environment
(Salazar, 2012). Pfeffer and Salancik (as cited in Sheppard, 1995, p.28), stated that the essence of a
company's survival concerns its ability to get and maintain resources. The hypothesis helps explain
why businesses should enter into exchanges with related parties and the manner in which the entity
can maintain its survival. Pfeffer and Salancik (as cited in Sheppard, 1995, p. 28 – 29) conveyed that
this survival occurs via demand management, namely the demands of interest associates upon which
the entities rely on for resources

Dependence
As a child, you become dependent on your parents. Dependence starts at birth, a newborn must be
fed every few hours. The excessive diaper changes and constant burping, one must depend on their
parents to take care of them. Oneself does not choose their caregiver nor if one wants to be
dependent upon them but, it's a need. Throughout this dependence one creates a special place in
their heart for their caregiver. This special place leads to defense in their honor and creates feelings
for one as a survival strategy. Growing up in church as a child, he or she learns to depend on the
bible to seek the right pathway into life. "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for
one's friends" (John 15:13 "32 Bible Verses about Dependance"). In addition to the church family
members especially parents are known to be the first dependent person ... Show more content on

Throughout this process Lakshmi trusted many "men" that promised to take care of her and
promised to protect her. An example of Stockholm Syndrome in this book was when Lakshmi and
Uncle husband were crossing the border; "Uncle Husband puts an arm around my shoulder. "Don't
be afraid," he says. "I will take care of you."(McCormick, Patricia "Sold")When Uncle Husband
states this promise, Lakshmi creates dependence on him after his given knowledge. By creating this
loyalty towards Uncle Husband it leads to lying for him. "The border man points to the paper and
asks me, "Is this your husband?". I curl my toes inside my new shoes and say yes." Her response
was given they soon arrived across the border. Through Uncle Husband's and Lakshmi's travels she
created more dependence towards Uncle Husband until she arrives at a house, called the Happiness
House. She was then sold there for 10,000 rupees by Uncle

Dependency In The Welfare States
Dependency, in a society such as ours, it can be seen as almost deplorable, with the individual in
need acting as an anchor and weight to the other functioning members of society. However, this
ideal presented by the great capitalists of the world is ostensible in some degree. Regardless of the
potential glory one might reap from a supply side system, it is as inherently flawed as the
individuals it attempts to control through self–interest. Although not suggested by the source, this
can lead to a precipitation of greed, resulting the growth of poverty, as well as an over accumulation
of wealth in the "one percent." During any recession, without ample benefits, due to individualism,
the growth of poverty is only exacerbated, collapsing economic ... Show more content on

Truly, the best possible situation is to modify the welfare system, in order to properly ensure the
cooperation of the individual who employs welfare's benefits. Doing so, can to some extent promote
the ideas of individualism in order to reduce the culture of dependency, while remaining true to the
basic concept of a welfare state. One possible form of adapting the welfare system is to promote job
seeking, requiring the individual to meet a certain quota of job applications, and interviews over a
given time period, in order to ensure the individual is actively searching for a job, rather than relying
solely on their benefits. This embraces the individualist ideas presented by the source, and reduces
the dependency of the individual upon the welfare state. Another possible modification is the
reduction of the amount of consecutive time one can spend on the benefits of the welfare system,
barring recession. This modification would work hand in hand with the first modification to ensure
the individual is adequately attempting to rejoin the workforce. However, in a recession, which
would be identified by the government, there would be increased latitude extended to the individual
in the regard of job seeking. This also embraces some individual characteristics, while maintaining
the welfare system for the individual's

Description Of A Database Management System
Chris Velasquez
MGMT 329
Final Research Paper to Pass
A database is an organized collection of data. It is the collection of tables, queries, reports, viewings,
and other objects. The data are typically organized to model aspects of reality in a way that supports
processes requiring information, such as modelling the structure of a major business such as
Walmart, and all of its data including things like their inventory, customers, and their employees. A
database management system is a computer software application that interacts with the user, other
applications, and the database itself to capture and analyze data. A general purpose database
management system is designed to allow the definition, creation, querying, update, and
administration of databases. The Database uses terms that are key for anyone to sift through the
collection of data that any company or business collects. terminology consists of keywords that will
help users select desired pieces of data. The primary key is a special relational database table
column of a collection of columns appointed to individually identify all table records. The primary
key's main features include: it cannot contain a unique value for each row of data, and it cannot
contain null values. The primary key is either an existing table column or a column that is explicitly
initiated by the database according to a defined sequence. The foreign key is a column or group of
columns in a relational database table that implements

Our Helpless Dependance on Technology
Technology started out as a necessity, people needed it back when they weren't guaranteed safety,
heat, shelter etc. Technology similarly started off by accidental discoveries that slowly morphed into
technology today. Technology in the past is much more different than what it is today. Take the
example of fire. Fire started by accident but furthermore led to expansion into creating bigger fires.
To be exact this happened because there was a need to keep warm and have a source of light. The
discovery may have led to the idea that they need more fires. Maintaining fires accordingly may
have led into the discovery of cooking, because of the need to cook and food to be nutritious must
have been very important. Technology in the past meant slowly advancing to make lives easier. If
you see technology today the first few things you think are, computers, tablets, and other common
household objects. With the fast pace of technology today, technology is harming our businesses,
brains and our bodies. The fast pace of technology as a result has played a big part in running us and
our society. As technology advances (which is a good thing) so does our total dependency on it
makes it run our society. The fast pace of technology consequently doubles our dependency
therefore harming us physically, emotionally and physcologically.
Technology isn't the reason why it is hurting us, it is our dependence on technology that hurts. To
illustrate the idea of the dependance on technlogy when the

Roles And Responsibilities Of Nonprofit Board Governance
The nonprofit board and its governance are critical to an organization's success. Brown (2007)
stresses the need for governing boards to be informed, effective, and engaged, especially because the
current environment (i.e. increasing competition for resources, etc.) demands high–quality board
performance. The purpose of this paper is to examine existing literature as it relates to nonprofit
board governance and performance. This analysis includes an examination of nonprofit boards'
roles, responsibilities, and functions along with a review of best practices. In addition, board roles
and best practices, and their correlation to board performance is emphasized. Finally, a discussion of
the practical implications of the literature as it relates to DavidsonWorks' board ties the literature to
real–world application. Roles and Responsibilities of Nonprofit Boards Work roles are ongoing
activities that an individual performs in partnership with an organization to influence that
organization's output (Wright & Millesen, 2008). For nonprofit boards, strategies for success are
difficult to create as boards strive to hold public trust while maintaining its institution's mission and
purpose (Wright & Millesen, 2008). Paramount to its success, a nonprofit board must understand its
roles and responsibilities. The existing literature on nonprofit governance suggests board roles are
widespread and varied (Brown & Guo, 2010). For example, in BoardSource (2004b) as cited by

The Business Structure Of Tesco
Introduction
Nowadays Corporation has become one of the very powerful institution around the world. They
have reached everywhere across the globe with different sizes and capabilities. The governance of
corporate has a major effect on economies. There is a huge loss of trust from shareholders and the
market value is affected tremendously. Due to the globalization, the govern role has lessen which
means more need for accountability. (Crane and Matten, 2007) Corporate governance has become
an important factor in managing organizations in the current global and complex environment.
Corporate governance a set of processes and structures for controlling and directing an organization.
It constitutes a set of rules, which governs the relationships (Middle Eastern Finance and Economics

to the corporate failures corporate are scared to admit it. It includes various and all kinds of

The Dependence of Our Society on Technology
During the past two decades technology has seen an explosive progression. In this time we have
come from very few people having personal computers, let alone those that were able to connect to
the internet to having the equivalent of multiple of these machine in our pockets connected to the
internet at all times. In today's society many people opt to use their mobile device over a traditional
computer and these devices make it rather appealing and easy to do so. With applications that are
built to make life easier, games to waste a few minutes, movies and music at the touch of a finger
who wouldn't chose this over the alternative! The problem is when we become too dependent on
these devices. Do we really need to be connected twenty four hours a day? Is this technology
restricting our ability to be productive without it? Can the users succeed in everyday activities like
traveling without these devices? This is a very new topic for argument but one that needs to be
thought about and analyzed. What society must realize is that we are becoming too dependent on
these devices and need to make reasonable concessions or preparations in the case of a failure.
When we take a look at the uses of these devices we will find that they have an absolute plethora of
uses. Smart phones can be used for the original use of making phones calls, but that is really the
simplest use of the device. We can actually use these devices to replace GPS systems and aid in
navigation, play video games,

Essay on The Rich Brother by Tobias Wolff
The short story, "The Rich Brother," by Tobias Wolff represents the same concept that everyday
people all over the world encounter. This portrays how having siblings can be an enormous part of a
persons life. The rivalry between siblings is often very competitive, but at the same time similar to
magnets. When they are not connected it may seem they are independent and whole, but when
examined closely it is obvious they are really relying on each other to function properly. Although
Pete and Donald's life are separate and completely different, they are in fact very dependent on each
other.
The meaning of dependence is the act of being influenced, relying on, or needing someone for aid or
support. Dependence is one of the main ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Even thought Pete does not show caring emotions, his actions say all the words. For example:
Donald said, "Pete do you ever dream about me?" Pete replied with, "What kind of question is that?
Of course I don't dream about you." He said untruthfully. (pg.367). This is one of the only parts in
this short story that shows the reader a very small part of Pete's soft side. Another example compares
in a similar way that Pete does in fact have a connection with his only brother Donald. "There was
something wrong with me, and you were helping me out. Taking care of me. Just the two of us. I
don't know where everyone else was supposed to be." Pete said. (pg. 369) If someone were to
analyze only this part of the story it would portray that in his dream he depended on Donald. When
he says it was just the two of them, it gives the reader an idea that was the way it was supposed to
be, that Pete didn't need anyone else in the world to help him but only needed the person he could
truly rely upon. Dependency is one of the main concealed habits between siblings, not only growing
up, but continuously throughout one others life. Another common inconspicuous idiosyncrasy is
rivalry. Rivalry is often associated in competition including sports, events, and mostly a trait that
seems siblings are born with. The urge to be the best at something or to be noticed is commonly
seen in children, especially the ones similar in age that always strive for attention. In this story,
Wolff includes

To Kill a Mockingbird Response to Literature Essay

Period 1, Mrs. Grexton

There are many significant symbols used to represent the different themes in To Kill a Mockingbird.
Throughout the book Harper Lee transmits a message to the reader using examples and symbols to
get her point across. Some of these symbols include the dresses, Tim Johnson, and dependencies.
The symbol that best represents the theme of growing up would be clothing. Throughout the book,
clothing has been more than just a choice of style; it had been a sign of maturity. Another instance
would be when Miss Maudie asks Scout, "'Where are your britches today?'" Scout answers back,
"Under my dress." (Lee 309) This shows that Scout has finally learned to accept the ... Show more

'"He's far from dead, Jem, he hasn't gotten started yet."' Racism has a funny way of popping back up
once you think its done and over with. Just when you think its about to die out, there is still more out
there. Aside from clothes and Tim, deceptive appearance is also an important theme symbolized by
people's different dependencies. Although the weakness may look like one thing, it might actually
mean another. For example: '"secretly Miss Finch, I'm not much of a drinker, but you see they could
never, never understand that I live the way I do because that's the way I want to live."' (Lee 268)
Dolphus Raymond's "apparent" weakness/dependency seem to be an addiction to spirits. But as we
take a closer look he reveals to us that his so called addiction is only a cover up so people would
spare the time to try and figure out his motives. "His left arm was fully 12 inches shorter than his
right, and hung dead at his side."' (Lee 248) Tom's state implies that he committed the crime and
looks as if he is guilty, but his dependency being his left arm proves that he couldn't have done the
crime. "Mrs Dubose was a morphine addict, she took pain–killers for years...she was going to leave
this world holden to nothing and nobody."' Hearing this from Atticus jem realizes, "You mean that's
what her fits were?" (Lee 147 and 148) Jem has always seen Mrs. Dubose as a horrible old lady with
a bitter tongue. But as he looks past the deceptive

The Hole That Are Left From Society Within The Realm Of...
In regards to theories of justice, Rawl's significantly overlooks members of society within the realm
of dependency. This can be seen in the way he speaks towards people with dependency needs and
those who fulfill those needs, or more pointedly, the way he doesn't write towards them, at all. The
holes that are left in Rawl's theory are remedied by Kittay's analysis of dependency, and her
understanding of dependency and dependency workers. The holes in Rawl's theory include the
importance of human connection, as well as the effects of the patriarchy on members of society.
Kittay adequately illustrates the importance of including the concept dependency when attempting
to achieve a just society in her analysis In Kittay's Love's Labours the main focus is on the
intricacies of dependency, this includes the dependent, the dependence worker, and the reasons
behind dependency. Kittay speaks to the reality of dependency, which is not always glamorous, but
is necessary in the creation of a fair society. She writes, "The bonds of a human society tie not only
those who can voluntarily obligate themselves and who are equally situated to benefit from mutual
cooperation. Dependents are not in such a position, neither are those who must care for dependents"
(1999, 27). While relying on other people and creating genuine relationships is a beautiful part of
being human and forming community, many members of society have no such choice to interact in

Thus, according to this theory, underdeveloped countries are perceived as "backward" compared to
developed countries as models for having reached the final stage of development presented by
Rostow [2]. As highlighted sociologists' modernization Talcott Parsons (1951) and Alex Inkeless
(1964), changing values and social structures is a fundamental basis of the process of economic
development of a country factor. Indeed, the traditional values of a country need to be replaced by
modern Western values , emphasizing individualism and rationality, because without this change of
mentality, traditional societies cannot develop modern institutions it are needed to promote progress
and economic growth, the ultimate goals of modernization, and ensure the maintenance of order can
be challenged by the changes that cause the development [3].
Theories of modernization have therefore concentrated on the overall internal blockages Third

The Character of Eleanor in The Haunting of Hill House by...
Eleanor and Hill House are drawn together and grow dependent on one another as a result of their
many similarities, but their connection leads to chaos among the house. As I have mentioned earlier,
Hill House has many angles in the home that are not normal, but rather they are a little off. Eleanor
herself seems to be what one would consider a little off mentally. Both seem to have a somewhat
normal exterior, but there remain many unknowns and unanswered questions on the inside. While
they appear one way on the outside, there is a lot more occurring on the inside. The home has many
supernatural events occurring and Eleanor has thoughts that vary from her actions. When Theodora
tells Eleanor that she is sorry, Eleanor accepts the apology with a smile yet she is not really
accepting of the apology and has another idea in mind. "I must say something, Eleanor told herself; I
must show them that I am a good sport, after all; a good sport; let them think that I am ashamed of
myself"(147). While everyone believes that Eleanor is okay and was merely frightened, she really
seems to be playing mind games with the other guests of the house. During her time at Hill House,
Eleanor hides her true feelings and mainly her fear behind the exterior that everything is ok and
masks them with a smile. The secrecy between Eleanor and the home cause anxiety for both the
readers as well as the other characters within the novel. Both harbor a multitude of secrets and feel a
sense of security with

Spoiled Rotten By Elizabeth Kolbert
Spoiled and rotten, words that in most people minds describe a trust fund no good brat that never did
hard day work due to their parents doing everything for them, and giving them everything they ever
wanted. Usually those kids that you see on those horrible reality TV shows, that make American
culture look a nation full of spoiled rotten brats to other cultures. Is American really full of children
that are spoiled? "According to one poll, commissioned by Time and CNN, two–thirds of American
parents think that their children are spoiled" (Kolbert pg. 3). Even thought due to contrary of
popular belief writer Elizabeth Kolbert haves a different opinion in her article "Spoiled Rotten". She
asserts that it does not take wealth to make a child to become spoiled. Instead Kolbert argues that
children become spoiled when their parents cannot say no to their children and don 't teach them to
cope with no, or teach them to be dependent at a young age, and that parents worry more about a
college education than raising a kid to become self motivated, independent, and an efficient person
in life.
In Kolbert 's article she believes that American children have become extremely spoiled and
dependent than they ever been due to how their parents are raising them to be. Also, she believes
that American children are most spoiled children compare to any other culture. This generation of
parents of their overbearing is causing their children to have more dependency on their parents. Due

First Cars plc Critical path analysis is a method that is used to plan out the many activities involved
in a project to be able to find the most efficient way of complete it and how to complete it on time.
From a research and development point of view, the decision to go ahead with this project relies
solely on the critical path analysis provided by Amy Jones. In light of this, the operations director is
rightly concerned about how valuable the data provided by the critical path analysis is. The
arguments for and against seem to be balanced. Therefore, I present the most significant argument of

Which could mean they do not reach their important deadline of August 2010 – which could
possibly mean that they have thrown the whole project down the drain; this is because it is
extremely important for the business that they reach the deadline if they want to become a strong
competitor in the given market. Not only could the project be in jeopardy but the whole of the
business if any of the deadlines aren't met because it would put them in a poor state regarding their
cash flow. All in all, even though the argument seems to be relevantly balanced I believe there is a
lot to loss on this project, a considerably amount more than what is at stake to be gained. The project
is so unsafe for a business which is already struggling to survive. I think that First Car plc needs to
hold fire and invest in a project which will guarantee to bring in profits and cash quickly rather than
one that is extremely risky with no previous data to compare it on and one that entails extremely
high costs – cars could be sitting around for days or even weeks in expensive city centres with staff
having nothing to do, I suspect it could be a seasonal business in regards to when someone might
want a car and what for. Due to the reasons above I believe that in this case the value of the critical

The International Price Of Coffee
Coffee is the second most actively traded commodity in the world market. It generates a tremendous
amount of profit but distributes unequally. While the coffee farmers in Ethiopia are told that their
coffee is gold, they replied in disbelief, "If our coffee is gold, then why do we get nothing?" Human
being consumed more than two billion cups of coffee everyday; however, the root of the extensive
coffee trade can only get paltry profits from the world market. Black Gold is a documentary about
Ethiopian coffee farmers' struggle to seek fairer prices for their products. The mainline follows a
man named Tadesse Meskela, who works as a general manager for the Oromia Coffee Farmers Co–
Operative Union. He traveled between developed countries and his nation Ethiopia, trying to sell
Ethiopian coffee beans into a better deal in order to provide the farmers a greater profit. As the
documentary reveals, the international price of coffee is established in centralize market places,
which are located in well–developed cities such as New York and London. Coffee buyers and sellers
make price negotiation and trade decision; coffee farmers, however, are scarcely involved in this
process. According to the film, "the supply of coffee on the world market used to be regulated by the
International Coffee Agreement, until its collapse in 2009. Since then, the price paid to farmers has
fallen to a 30 year low." (Black Gold 2006). Many communities in Ethiopia are mainly relying on
planting coffee.

need to care about one another before they can care about climate change.
Sociologists Peter Berger and Thomas Luckmann state that "from the moment of birth, man's [...]
development... [is] subjected to continuing socially determined interference" (Berger and Luckmann
48). From the very start, a person's very being is affected by the society they were born in, and this
only continues throughout their life. Thus, in order to change the attitude of people in a society, one
must somehow change the society. This is no small task, but as theorized in Herland, the "way to
make the best kind of people" is with education (Gilman 51). A current study from Harvard found
that out of 10,000 middle and high school students surveyed, only 22% thought caring for others
was most important to them, with most students (and their parents) instead focusing on achievement
(Hough). This attitude just feeds into competitive apathy later in life, where men and women strive
to only better themselves, regardless of the cost to others or the environment. To rectify this, a
greater emphasis on caring and social responsibility must be introduced to curriculums. Care is
incredibly important, even in a complex

Emerson's Theory Of Power Dependence Theory By Emerson
Power Dependence Theory by Emerson
Name: Sowmya B Roll Number: M2015LE023
A power is "vacant" unless it is over someone. Power makes the other 'X' person dependent. Power
and dependency are two factors that we will roll on along with their balanced and imbalanced
operationalization. Power is a property of a social relation and not an attribute of an actor. An actor
here can be either a person or a group and any relation might be a person–person, group–person or
group–group relation. Social relations are mainly mutual dependencies among the involved parties
where power and dependency take their role and structure.
Dependency:
The dependence of actor 'A' upon actor 'B' is
1. Directly proportional ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Power:
The power of actor A over actor B is the amount of resistance on B's part which can be potentially
overcome by A. Here, B must show a change in the conduct to counter A in his attitude of
expectation in terms of power.
Power of A upon B is equal to the dependence of B upon A. Pab = Dba
Note: Powet of A upon B is depicted as Pab
Power–dependence Relation:
Recognising the reciprocity of social relations, we can represent the power–dependence relation as a
pair of equations: Pab = Dba & Pba = Dab
Example:–
a) Teachers in a Special school have the power to control the students with intellectual disability, so
the students are dependent on the teachers to learn.
b) A person with interest in getting employed in a company 'X' which provides good technological
learning, travel allowances, medical benefits varies directly with his desire of employment in
company 'X' , and inversely with the same sort of employee benefits from other companies.
c) The same generic power dependence relation exists in the case of 'filial love' between parent and
child and in 'respect for treaties' among

The Importance Of Music Therapy
Can music really enhance health? This question has emerged rapidly over last couple years. This is
the question many music therapists have been so many making studies to prove. Music therapy is
the professional use of music and its elements as an intervention in medical, educational, and
everyday environments with individuals, groups, families, communities, etc. Music therapy strives
to improve the social, communicative, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual health and wellbeing.
Although many might not look at music as a medicine, it can be a critical drug for people of old age.
Music and psychology ties into each other in a major way. Psychology is the scientific study of the
human mind and its functions, especially those affecting behavior in a given context. Music ties into
psychology by the way people and the human brain react to the sounds of music. This is why the
topic of music therapy is a relevant topic to discuss. Music has been used therapeutically for
therapies for autism, therapies for dementia and Alzheimer's, depression and bipolar disorder, sleep
disorders, memory impairment, parenting and social activities that foster prosocial behavior, music
lessons, infant brain development, consumer buying, and many more extracurriculars
(www.winmentalhealth.com). Each of these applications of music in therapy has shown many
positive results when studies have been conducted.

Basis of Power Essay
Bases of Power Essay When speaking on power, the Greek philosopher Aristotle once suggested
"What lies in our power to do, it lies in our power not to do". Although not always apparent,
everyone possesses power in one form or the other. Power can be defined as the influence that one
person has over another person. The influence an individual possesses can be extended to others
through a variety of dissimilar stratagems. In 1959, social psychologists John French and Bertam
Raven completed a comprehensive study on the bases of power and concluded that power can be
separated into five distinct forms. The five forms of power French and Raven defined are coercive,
reward, legitimate, expert, and referent. This thesis will describe the ... Show more content on

In addition, the accounting manager utilizes reward power to negotiate employee 2's compressed
work week. Reward power is also present within the sales department group as they collectively
reward employee 3 with a team leader position. In all three of the reward power examples,
dependencies exist to solidify the power. The marketing manager only possesses reward power
provided the employee sees the bonus as a reward. If the employee values their time at home more
than the income the bonus provides, then the reward power of the manager diminishes. Likewise, if
the accounting manager did not have the legitimate power to offer employee 2 a compressed work
week, the manager would not hold reward power. In the final example, Employee 3 was dependent
on the sales group for the reward. Had the group dismissed the sales pitch, reward power would not
even be a consideration. The third form of power that is present in the given scenario is legitimate
power. Legitimate power can be described as the power that one person has over another because
they hold an authoritative position over that person. Most organizations have a hierarchical structure
of leadership and organizational leaders possess legitimate power equivalent to their position within
the hierarchy. Legitimate power is intrinsic to positions of stature and is considered power by
default. However, a

What is a dependency? Now that you have identified your critical IT assets, what are the
dependency relationships between these assets?
Use relationships to manage dependencies. Many assets have dependencies, or requirements that are
beyond the asset itself in order to be complete, to work, or to build. For example a Build or an
Implementation asset type might have dependencies that are required for the asset to be complete or
valid. Assets may require certain binary and jar files that are dependencies for the build or
implementation.
Managing dependencies includes both defining the dependencies and then governing them by using
policies. You must first identify what dependencies are part of your assets, then define them and
then apply policies. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Include versions and other information that may change over time. For example, you might specify,
"Version A goes with Version C and is used in products 1, 2, and 3, for platforms A, B, and C."
Save the dependencies as artifacts in the asset or as related assets.
Use relationships between required files or components. A dependency can define how an asset
version depends on another version of another asset. For example, a dependency might state, "Use
version, 1.4.2 vs. 1.4.1 of common component A" or "Use the latest approved and tested version or
latest build" . Specify an approved version of each required common library or component so that
multiple versions are not used. See: Asset relationships

Evaluating A Multidimensional Trust Model For Computing...
Abstract – Different models are used widely used in e–commerce to rate the products on the portal,
but the comments are aggregated to compute seller reputation. The "all good reputation" problem is
very prominent in the current e–commerce rating systems. But these scores are universal and it is
difficult for potential buyers to buy from trustworthy sellers. In this paper, based on comments that
buyers' express in the feedback section, I have proposed CommTrust for evaluation by mining the
feedback comments. My contribution include: (1) I propose a multidimensional trust model for
computing user feedback comments; (2) I also propose an Algorithm for Mining Feedback
Comments for Dimension Ratings, Combining Techniques of NLP, LDA and PLSA. To the best of
my knowledge, I am the pioneer on trust evaluation by mining feedback comments.

every field. It is touching every aspect of human life. One of the major trends now–a–days is e–
commerce. Accurate evaluation of products is crucial for the success of the e–commerce system.
Reputation calculation systems are bring used in various e–commerce enterprises. Various methods
are employed to calculate ratings & reputations. At eBay, the reputation score for a vendor is
calculated based on a 12 month positive percentage score, out of the total positive and negative

The Structural Forces On The Extreme Elasticity
Illnesses and their narratives tend to vary person by person, and place by place throughout the
world. For this paper, I plan to emphasize how different structural factors play a huge role in how
people interact with their conditions and the situations around them. The individual that I
interviewed has had a recurring illness narrative with the extreme elasticity in her shoulders that has
led to a variety of structural forces impacting her life. For example, the fact that she was raised by a
single parent for the first few years of her life structured how she feels about being independent,
along with her ability to be ambitious and to overcome obstacles in both her life and medical
treatment. For this paper I plan to show how this individual, Anna, was able to interact with the
structural forces that were impacting her view of her condition including stigma, labeling and views
of dependency.
In regards to her experience, Anna described it as a mix of emotions and an experience that she had
to work very hard to overcome. Her reaction to the diagnosis, surgery and the ensuing physical
therapy were influenced by both her parents and how other individuals, namely her guidance
counselor, reacted towards her and her situation. Anna coped with her frustration from the surgery
and later experiences in ways that her parents had socially constructed for her throughout her life.
She describes how her main emotional reaction was frustration and determination towards finishing

Forms Of Adversity In Everyone Leaves By Wendy Guerra
When everyone leaves opportunities for personal growth arise. In Everyone Leaves by Wendy
Guerra, the protagonist Nieve experiences many trials and tribulations starting at a young age
leading into adulthood. Everyone she becomes attached to ends up leaving her life one way or
another. In my opinion this is a gift and a curse. Although I've experienced many forms of adversity
that was extremely hard for her. That same adversity actually watered her seed and allowed her to
grow. This hardship leading to growth can me seen through Nieve and her mothers separation,
relationship with her father, and experience at the art school. First, Nieve was extremely dependent

true feelings about to the school in general. She clearly doesn't like the school and has an overall

not fit in and is completely okay with that. In previous times throughout Everyone Leaves, Nieve

The Contingency And The Resource Dependence Paradigms Play...
Both the Contingency and the Resource Dependence Paradigms play a vital role in business. Though
they have similarities, the also have differences. The following essay will describe these
components.
First, the contingency paradigm, a closed system, considers uncertainty and how changes in the
environment affect the internal aspect of the firm (Tolbert & Hall, 2009, p. 162). The elements can
include items such as size and technology, as it relates to customer demand to name a few. Another
example might be that a small firm would function better in a centralized fashion verses a large firm
that would benefit more from a decentralized method, whereas, fast paced environments may
require high technology and slow paced industries do not. The point here is that there is not one best
practice for leading or structuring a firm, hence, the company should fit within the environment
depending on internal and external factors (Long, 2014). It is important to note, hhowever,
coordination can become problematic in this theory. For illustration, let's say some environmental
factor cause a company to change structure from a simple structure to a more complex one.
Problems with coordination in the separate departments could present itself as communication and
interaction is vastly different. The key here is for the firm to adapt to the environment, as well as,
integrate the activity to make a seamless whole and reduce uncertainty. In fact, the best way to
organize should be contingent upon

The U.S. imports material for the sweatshops duty free where it is then assembled and manufactured

does not only happen in low–income countries, but as stated above, also in middle–income
countries. Having sweatshops across the boarder is convenient and reduces costs, but there are
places in the world where labor is even cheaper than in Mexico and companies such as Disney
World ® take advantage of this as well. For years Disney World ® has been related to children,
purity and innocence, but in the sweatshops where these products are being created, many of the

Modernization Theory And The Theories Of Modernization Theory
DEVELOPMENT THEORIES
STUDENT NUMBER ; 1008455
Modernization theory represents the mixture of sociology theories within societies. It mainly reflects
the traditional views of society and highlight the internal factors of a country and development
(Bernstein, 1971). From the 18th century, it englight the individual ideas of modernism the civilians
living in the society. Whereas, the social changes were brought in revolution to change the view and
standards of living with the concept of functionalism, which focuses on interdependence (Tétreault
& Abel, 1986). It is stated by the French philosopher Marquies de Condorcet, who bought a new
division of technology development and changes in the society.

Dependency theory was arose in the response of modernization that where wealthy states are

nations such as labor, markets, natural resources, etc.
Researcher highlighted, modernization has been the most dominant theory in societies and political

As Hillis (2010, p. 93) clearly states 'like it or not, the dependencies are too strong to allow us to
disconnect. Our destinies are entangled with one another's and with our technologies'.
Secondly, this dependency on computers has actually taken over people's involvement in other
social and physical activities. In the past, children and even adults used to play table games or even
do more exercises in their free time. However, nowadays computers are taking over the way people
spend their free time, causing an antisocial disorder and a sedentary lifestyle. A research carried out
by Young (1996a) indicates that dependency on computers, specifically Internet, had led to several
problems at workplaces and in families or with social relations (cited in Widyanto & Griffiths,
2007). Opponents of this view, however, argue that this advantageous technology allows antisocial
people to be more extroverted and raise their self–esteem. For example, many people can be more
extroverted and even say thing that they will not say in person. Nevertheless, many researches have
proved that users began to replace their social and physical activities, changed their sleeping
patterns and their mood with the increasing dependency on computers. More people prefer to stay at

As Harrison stated in the prior article, it is possible for the internet to disappear. Without the
patient's online files, the doctors and nurses are clueless of how to take care of their patients. One
major reason devices are not dependable are because of hackers. Various hospitals' files recently
have been susceptible to hacking. Earlier this year a Methodist hospital in Kentucky was hacked and
did not have access to their files for five days. The hospital was disordered and could not function
efficiently. The dependency on technology is already starting to show horrible outcomes and
circumstances. Despite occupations, the average person also depends far too much on technology.
For example, most people in today's world can not wake up in the morning without using a
technological device. The article "Almost 60% of 16–34 year olds use a phone as their primary
timepiece," states that 48% of those ages 16–34 use a phone as an alarm. It has gotten to a point in
which something so simple as waking up in the morning can not be accomplished without a phone
being involved. People also depend on their phones for communication, directions, instructions,
shopping, and answers. Humans have fallen deep into the hole of technology and they are
continuing to dig themselves further and further down.
Technology is causing people to become introverts and addicted to their devices. Phones, especially,
are a distraction.

If you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime" ("Chinese" par. 1). This ancient proverb has
some truth in it. Right now in America, the poor are not being taught "how to fish" instead they are
relying on charities to give away food and clothing for them to survive. Through work readiness
programs and a reform in food and clothing distribution, charities can cut the parasite of the
dependent poor and prepare them to go out and earn what they need. Job preparation programs are
an excellent way to minister the poor and needy by preparing them for the future and empowering
them to be able to take care of themselves. In Seat Pleasant, Maryland, the Training Source offers
job–training program, self–improvement workshops, and skill training. The Training Source is
teaching those who do not have jobs, job skills which will equip them and help them to find a job

food and clothing to survive. In my hometown, Anniston, Alabama, the Christians Women's Job
Corp and the Christian Men's Job Corp pairs men and women up with mentors who will help the
needy with obtaining their GED, interviewing skills, resume building, how to dress for success, and
applying for jobs. The job corps also provide, upon completion of classes, interview appropriate

Immigration, Baby Boomers, and U.S. Economic Policy in 21st Century
Michael Lowrey
West Chester University of Pennsylvania
In an effort to explore the interaction between U.S. Immigration Policy, Social Security, and their
political impacts, the following scholarly sources were examined. Specifically, the "Baby Boomer"
generation is retiring in much larger numbers and exercise both economic and political power. The
following articles are current (1995) and provide a sample of the varied literature and
interdisciplinary analysis available on the topic.

(2008). Aging baby boomers and the effect of immigration: Rediscovering the intergenerational
social contract. Generations, 32(4), 18.
Myers presents a method where ODR is redefined as a Senior Ratio (SR) where only those from
ages 25 to 64 are involved in workforce replenishment calculation forecasts. Specifically, the spike
in Baby Boomer retirement is proposed as a destabilizing challenge due to generational housing
market incongruence. Often a primary asset, the value of Baby Boomer real estate stock becomes a
core economic indicator. Immigration policy, economic data, and the weight of public rhetoric are
identified and offered as disparate sources providing a solution to forecasted budgetary shortfalls.

Coffee Is An Essential Part Of The Lives Of Millions Of...
Coffee has become an essential part of the lives of millions of people all across the world. It is how
a majority of people starts their day, and get through their day. It is shared over good conversation
with friends and loved ones, it is reason for a date, or for comfort on a cold day and because of this
it has become a way in which many people identify themselves. In North America what you put in
your coffee, your favourite coffee shop and how much you spend have become a way in which we
label ourselves, because everyone knows that spending five dollars on a coffee from Starbucks
makes you superior. Yet looking past the brand and its perceived superiority the reality is that
Starbucks profits while farmers starve . Each and everyday ... Show more content on

The essence of the dependency theory is comprised of two states; the center or periphery, the global
north or the global south, those who benefit from connections in the global food system or those
who suffer, the advanced nations in the Organization of Economic Co–operation and Development
(OECD) or Latin America, Asia and Africa . Through the dependency theory it is assumed that
external forces hold the power within individual dependent states, of which can include;
multinational corporations, international commodity markets, foreign assistance, and
communications, or by any way in which further advanced and industrialized countries can
represent and enforce their economic interests abroad . Furthermore, the dependency theory is a
historical process that is in–depth and has many aspects, and proponents. Raul Prebisch and Hans
Singer argued that it was the rise of capitalism that had created the center and periphery in the world
economy, and that trade between the two would allow the already apparent inequalities to flourish.
Their hypothesis expanded on this with the idea that with the advances in technology, trade between
industrial and agricultural countries eventually would favour

Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Q2) Evaluate the main difficulties faced by Balfour Beatty and other construction companies in their use of CPA to plan their projects. (15 marks) Critical path analysis identifies the most efficient and cost effective way of completing a complex project. The various activities which together will make up the project are identified, and the order of these activities are identified. Then, the duration of each activity is estimated and these factors are then arranged as a network or graph, showing the whole project from start to finish, and showing which tasks can happen at the same time. The sequence of tasks which have to be done one after another with no gaps in between is called the Critical Path. One difficulty of using Critical Path Analysis is that unless critical activities are identified and supervised closely, there'll be delays to the whole project. Critical path analysis puts pressure on mangers to manage effectively and meet deadlines. If, for example, Balfour Beatty was unable to get hold of a particular piece of equipment when needed, the whole project could be delayed by the amount of time that it takes to get the equipment. This means that there will be many employees being paid with no output and the whole project is delayed with doesn't usually bode well with the customer. A second difficulty of using Critical ... • 3. The World Of World War I Prior to the beginning of World War I, the world economy was held up by four pillars: the gold standard, free trade, communication and transportation, and capital and labor labor mobility. After facing two world wars and a worldwide economic depression, economists and governments from around the world implemented several development strategies. Some strategists tried to rebuild the order from before World War I in a more flexible and stable way while others bucked the traditional world order all together in an attempt to develop more quickly. While import–substituting industrialization provided short term benefits and long–term problems to the nations that practiced it, the Bretton Woods System provided sustainable economic growth to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Nations that practiced ISI could never entirely eliminate their dependence on the world economy, and ISI's bias against exports left nations with very little export revenue which could be used to pay for things that the nation absolutely had to import. These balance of payments crises hurt domestic economies, often leading to social unrest and coups. Compounding the problems caused by balance of payments problems, nations which practiced ISI also tended to have high inflation rates as well as high income–inequality caused by privileging industrialization at the expense of agricultural classes. Ultimately, ISI nations began experiencing massive social, political, and economic problems which stifled further development. After World War II, the Western economic powers implemented the Bretton Woods System, an attempt to concurrently return to, build upon, and strengthen the pre–World War I economic system. The stringency of the Gold Standard was replaced by an economic system in which currencies were tied together by the more flexible US dollar, which was itself backed by gold. Free trade was reimplemented by GATT, which would later become the WTO. Under the Bretton Woods System, the world saw an incredible amount of post–war economic growth. Jeffry Frieden points out that in the postwar period, advanced capitalist nations "grew three times as fast as in the interwar years and twice as fast as before World War I". Insightful Guides When you were younger, did you ever get separated from your parent and not know what to do or whom to go to for assistance, and because you didn't know what to do you just wandered aimlessly around? I know I have, and that's what a lot of people who are lost like that do. In fact, that happens a lot here with new students. Yes, there are the peer helpers but that only gives the new student one guide for one day. And that guide doesn't even show them their classes, they take them to the classes they have and then the new student, the very next day, is on their own to find their own way. But wouldn't it be great if they knew someone, or multiple people who could help them on the spot, almost anytime during the school ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Their independence will be not only in finding their way around but also in knowing where to locate things and who people are. Now many people argue "they're in middle school," and "they're older now," meaning we have to be independent anyway. But even though we are older, that doesn't mean we always know where things are or we always know what to do. That's like saying a newborn can survive without caretaker. It's as simple as this; newborns know very little about the world and how it works as to new students knowing very little about new schools and how they work. So regardless of maturity or age, people need to be dependent before they can be independent, and the ambassador program is a good form of that temporary dependence. Another benefit of the ambassador program would be that it would allow new students to become comfortable and gain a form of confidence. It's important for new student/staff to be comfortable because if they weren't think of how difficult it would be for them to focus not only in class but just in general. And when students become comfortable and confident enough, that's when they will be able to focus on things like work. But it's often thought that being comfortable shouldn't prioritize over classes and what matters is getting work done. But what most don't realize is that it's virtually impossible for people like us to focus on work if we feel out of place in our everyday environment. But this program would allow ... • 7. Understanding Latin America's International and Economic... Prior to analyzing the ISI (Import Substitution Industrialization) model, it's benefits as well as its shortcomings, a small introduction of how it came to be and why must be provided. As a product of the 1930s economic crisis and wear and tear of the liberal model, ISI appears in Latin America as another economic option, proposed by ECLA (Economic Commission for Latin America, dependent of the UN) as a means of bringing Latin America out of stagnation and work towards industrialization to eliminate its dependency on agriculture which was seen as vulnerable. There are two critical ways in which this model must be examined, theoretically as well as its concrete outcomes and policy implications within Latin American states. By looking at ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Therefore, it was believed that "Latin America instead of following outward–looking development path should instead pursue an ISI policy as the centre–piece for a new inward–directed development strategy" (Kay 5), following the beginning footsteps of the developed states. Although its main goal was to strengthen the national economy to better compete in the global market, ISI has had very controversial results. Positively speaking, it has resulted in a decrease in imports, which has favoured certain national industries such as electric materials for construction, textiles, chemicals, etc., the nationalization of natural resources, betterment of term of trade, state intervention in economics (which led to the development of education, health and employment), strengthening of social organizations, but most importantly, the consolidation of the middle class. On a negative note, these nations led to become greatly dependent on technology, there was an increase of external capital control over developed areas, an under qualified labour force for factory jobs, increase in prices of manufactured goods and inflation, migration from rural to urban areas and as a result an increase in social problems, and finally, the industrial sector did not bother to conquer external markets which essentially contradicted the whole purpose of ISI. For these reasons ISI was seen as a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Resource Dependency Theory Of Wal Mart Stores, Inc. For this assignment, the writer commences by exploring "Resource Dependency Theory" as the understanding of this hypothesis is vital. Next, an overview will be undertaken in terms of the selected organisation –that is, Wal–Mart Stores, Inc. After, the paper will present a brief description of the relationship between Walmart and its suppliers. It then goes on to highlight the managerial bridging strategies that the company uses in dealing with the organisations it depends on for resources. These strategies are: negotiation, contracts, interlocking directorates, joint ventures, strategic alliances, and mergers and acquisitions. About Resource Dependency Theory Hillman (2009) indicated that "Resource Dependence Theory" refers to a business entity as an open mechanism that is reliant on contingencies in the external environment (p.2). That is, the theory views a business in relation to its resource dependences with other businesses in the environment (Salazar, 2012). Pfeffer and Salancik (as cited in Sheppard, 1995, p.28), stated that the essence of a company's survival concerns its ability to get and maintain resources. The hypothesis helps explain why businesses should enter into exchanges with related parties and the manner in which the entity can maintain its survival. Pfeffer and Salancik (as cited in Sheppard, 1995, p. 28 – 29) conveyed that this survival occurs via demand management, namely the demands of interest associates upon which the entities rely on for resources ... The excessive diaper changes and constant burping, one must depend on their parents to take care of them. Oneself does not choose their caregiver nor if one wants to be dependent upon them but, it's a need. Throughout this dependence one creates a special place in their heart for their caregiver. This special place leads to defense in their honor and creates feelings for one as a survival strategy. Growing up in church as a child, he or she learns to depend on the bible to seek the right pathway into life. Dependency In The Welfare States Dependency, in a society such as ours, it can be seen as almost deplorable, with the individual in need acting as an anchor and weight to the other functioning members of society. However, this ideal presented by the great capitalists of the world is ostensible in some degree. Regardless of the potential glory one might reap from a supply side system, it is as inherently flawed as the individuals it attempts to control through self–interest. Although not suggested by the source, this can lead to a precipitation of greed, resulting the growth of poverty, as well as an over accumulation of wealth in the "one percent." During any recession, without ample benefits, due to individualism, the growth of poverty is only exacerbated, collapsing economic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Truly, the best possible situation is to modify the welfare system, in order to properly ensure the cooperation of the individual who employs welfare's benefits. Doing so, can to some extent promote the ideas of individualism in order to reduce the culture of dependency, while remaining true to the basic concept of a welfare state. One possible form of adapting the welfare system is to promote job seeking, requiring the individual to meet a certain quota of job applications, and interviews over a given time period, in order to ensure the individual is actively searching for a job, rather than relying solely on their benefits. This embraces the individualist ideas presented by the source, and reduces the dependency of the individual upon the welfare state. Another possible modification is the reduction of the amount of consecutive time one can spend on the benefits of the welfare system, barring recession. This modification would work hand in hand with the first modification to ensure the individual is adequately attempting to rejoin the workforce. However, in a recession, which would be identified by the government, there would be increased latitude extended to the individual in the regard of job seeking. This also embraces some individual characteristics, while maintaining the welfare system for the individual's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Description Of A Database Management System Chris Velasquez MGMT 329 Final Research Paper to Pass A database is an organized collection of data. It is the collection of tables, queries, reports, viewings, and other objects. The data are typically organized to model aspects of reality in a way that supports processes requiring information, such as modelling the structure of a major business such as Walmart, and all of its data including things like their inventory, customers, and their employees. A database management system is a computer software application that interacts with the user, other applications, and the database itself to capture and analyze data. A general purpose database management system is designed to allow the definition, creation, querying, update, and administration of databases. The Database uses terms that are key for anyone to sift through the collection of data that any company or business collects. terminology consists of keywords that will help users select desired pieces of data. The primary key is a special relational database table column of a collection of columns appointed to individually identify all table records. The primary key's main features include: it cannot contain a unique value for each row of data, and it cannot contain null values. The primary key is either an existing table column or a column that is explicitly initiated by the database according to a defined sequence. The foreign key is a column or group of columns in a relational database table that implements ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 20. Our Helpless Dependance on Technology Technology started out as a necessity, people needed it back when they weren't guaranteed safety, heat, shelter etc. Technology similarly started off by accidental discoveries that slowly morphed into technology today. Technology in the past is much more different than what it is today. Take the example of fire. Fire started by accident but furthermore led to expansion into creating bigger fires. To be exact this happened because there was a need to keep warm and have a source of light. The discovery may have led to the idea that they need more fires. Maintaining fires accordingly may have led into the discovery of cooking, because of the need to cook and food to be nutritious must have been very important. Technology in the past meant slowly advancing to make lives easier. If you see technology today the first few things you think are, computers, tablets, and other common household objects. With the fast pace of technology today, technology is harming our businesses, brains and our bodies. The fast pace of technology as a result has played a big part in running us and our society. As technology advances (which is a good thing) so does our total dependency on it makes it run our society. The fast pace of technology consequently doubles our dependency therefore harming us physically, emotionally and physcologically. Technology isn't the reason why it is hurting us, it is our dependence on technology that hurts. To illustrate the idea of the dependance on technlogy when the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 22. Roles And Responsibilities Of Nonprofit Board Governance The nonprofit board and its governance are critical to an organization's success. Brown (2007) stresses the need for governing boards to be informed, effective, and engaged, especially because the current environment (i.e. increasing competition for resources, etc.) demands high–quality board performance. The purpose of this paper is to examine existing literature as it relates to nonprofit board governance and performance. This analysis includes an examination of nonprofit boards' roles, responsibilities, and functions along with a review of best practices. In addition, board roles and best practices, and their correlation to board performance is emphasized. Finally, a discussion of the practical implications of the literature as it relates to DavidsonWorks' board ties the literature to real–world application. Roles and Responsibilities of Nonprofit Boards Work roles are ongoing activities that an individual performs in partnership with an organization to influence that organization's output (Wright & Millesen, 2008). For nonprofit boards, strategies for success are difficult to create as boards strive to hold public trust while maintaining its institution's mission and purpose (Wright & Millesen, 2008). Paramount to its success, a nonprofit board must understand its roles and responsibilities. The existing literature on nonprofit governance suggests board roles are widespread and varied (Brown & Guo, 2010). For example, in BoardSource (2004b) as cited by Zimmermann ... • 26. The Dependence of Our Society on Technology During the past two decades technology has seen an explosive progression. In this time we have come from very few people having personal computers, let alone those that were able to connect to the internet to having the equivalent of multiple of these machine in our pockets connected to the internet at all times. In today's society many people opt to use their mobile device over a traditional computer and these devices make it rather appealing and easy to do so. With applications that are built to make life easier, games to waste a few minutes, movies and music at the touch of a finger who wouldn't chose this over the alternative! The problem is when we become too dependent on these devices. Do we really need to be connected twenty four hours a day? Is this technology restricting our ability to be productive without it? Can the users succeed in everyday activities like traveling without these devices? This is a very new topic for argument but one that needs to be thought about and analyzed. What society must realize is that we are becoming too dependent on these devices and need to make reasonable concessions or preparations in the case of a failure. When we take a look at the uses of these devices we will find that they have an absolute plethora of uses. Smart phones can be used for the original use of making phones calls, but that is really the simplest use of the device. We can actually use these devices to replace GPS systems and aid in navigation, play video games, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 28. Essay on The Rich Brother by Tobias Wolff The short story, "The Rich Brother," by Tobias Wolff represents the same concept that everyday people all over the world encounter. This portrays how having siblings can be an enormous part of a persons life. The rivalry between siblings is often very competitive, but at the same time similar to magnets. When they are not connected it may seem they are independent and whole, but when examined closely it is obvious they are really relying on each other to function properly. Although Pete and Donald's life are separate and completely different, they are in fact very dependent on each other. The meaning of dependence is the act of being influenced, relying on, or needing someone for aid or support. Dependence is one of the main ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Even thought Pete does not show caring emotions, his actions say all the words. For example: Donald said, "Pete do you ever dream about me?" Pete replied with, "What kind of question is that? Of course I don't dream about you." He said untruthfully. (pg.367). This is one of the only parts in this short story that shows the reader a very small part of Pete's soft side. Another example compares in a similar way that Pete does in fact have a connection with his only brother Donald. "There was something wrong with me, and you were helping me out. Taking care of me. Just the two of us. I don't know where everyone else was supposed to be." Pete said. (pg. 369) If someone were to analyze only this part of the story it would portray that in his dream he depended on Donald. When he says it was just the two of them, it gives the reader an idea that was the way it was supposed to be, that Pete didn't need anyone else in the world to help him but only needed the person he could truly rely upon. Dependency is one of the main concealed habits between siblings, not only growing up, but continuously throughout one others life. Another common inconspicuous idiosyncrasy is rivalry. Rivalry is often associated in competition including sports, events, and mostly a trait that seems siblings are born with. The urge to be the best at something or to be noticed is commonly seen in children, especially the ones similar in age that always strive for attention. In this story, Wolff includes ... To Kill a Mockingbird Response to Literature Essay Simran Gaglani English honors Period 1, Mrs. Grexton November 18 2011 There are many significant symbols used to represent the different themes in To Kill a Mockingbird. Throughout the book Harper Lee transmits a message to the reader using examples and symbols to get her point across. Some of these symbols include the dresses, Tim Johnson, and dependencies. The symbol that best represents the theme of growing up would be clothing. Throughout the book, clothing has been more than just a choice of style; it had been a sign of maturity. Another instance would be when Miss Maudie asks Scout, "'Where are your britches today?'" Scout answers back, "Under my dress." (Lee 309) This shows that Scout has finally learned to accept the ... Just when you think its about to die out, there is still more out there. Aside from clothes and Tim, deceptive appearance is also an important theme symbolized by people's different dependencies. Although the weakness may look like one thing, it might actually mean another. For example: '"secretly Miss Finch, I'm not much of a drinker, but you see they could never, never understand that I live the way I do because that's the way I want to live."' This can be seen in the way he speaks towards people with dependency needs and those who fulfill those needs, or more pointedly, the way he doesn't write towards them, at all. The holes that are left in Rawl's theory are remedied by Kittay's analysis of dependency, and her understanding of dependency and dependency workers. The holes in Rawl's theory include the importance of human connection, as well as the effects of the patriarchy on members of society. Kittay adequately illustrates the importance of including the concept dependency when attempting to achieve a just society in her analysis In Kittay's Love's Labours the main focus is on the intricacies of dependency, this includes the dependent, the dependence worker, and the reasons behind dependency. Kittay speaks to the reality of dependency, which is not always glamorous, but is necessary in the creation of a fair society. She writes, "The bonds of a human society tie not only those who can voluntarily obligate themselves and who are equally situated to benefit from mutual cooperation. Dependents are not in such a position, neither are those who must care for dependents" (1999, 27). Eleanor and Hill House are drawn together and grow dependent on one another as a result of their many similarities, but their connection leads to chaos among the house. As I have mentioned earlier, Hill House has many angles in the home that are not normal, but rather they are a little off. Eleanor herself seems to be what one would consider a little off mentally. Both seem to have a somewhat normal exterior, but there remain many unknowns and unanswered questions on the inside. While they appear one way on the outside, there is a lot more occurring on the inside. The home has many supernatural events occurring and Eleanor has thoughts that vary from her actions. When Theodora tells Eleanor that she is sorry, Eleanor accepts the apology with a smile yet she is not really accepting of the apology and has another idea in mind. "I must say something, Eleanor told herself; I must show them that I am a good sport, after all; a good sport; let them think that I am ashamed of myself"(147). Clearly, people need to care about one another before they can care about climate change. Sociologists Peter Berger and Thomas Luckmann state that "from the moment of birth, man's [...] development... [is] subjected to continuing socially determined interference" (Berger and Luckmann 48). From the very start, a person's very being is affected by the society they were born in, and this only continues throughout their life. Thus, in order to change the attitude of people in a society, one must somehow change the society. This is no small task, but as theorized in Herland, the "way to make the best kind of people" is with education (Gilman 51). A current study from Harvard found that out of 10,000 middle and high school students surveyed, only 22% thought caring for others was most important to them, with most students (and their parents) instead focusing on achievement (Hough). Power is a property of a social relation and not an attribute of an actor. An actor here can be either a person or a group and any relation might be a person–person, group–person or group–group relation. The influence an individual possesses can be extended to others through a variety of dissimilar stratagems. In 1959, social psychologists John French and Bertam Raven completed a comprehensive study on the bases of power and concluded that power can be separated into five distinct forms. The five forms of power French and Raven defined are coercive, reward, legitimate, expert, and referent. This thesis will describe the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In addition, the accounting manager utilizes reward power to negotiate employee 2's compressed work week. Reward power is also present within the sales department group as they collectively reward employee 3 with a team leader position. In all three of the reward power examples, dependencies exist to solidify the power. The marketing manager only possesses reward power provided the employee sees the bonus as a reward. If the employee values their time at home more than the income the bonus provides, then the reward power of the manager diminishes. Likewise, if the accounting manager did not have the legitimate power to offer employee 2 a compressed work week, the manager would not hold reward power. In the final example, Employee 3 was dependent on the sales group for the reward. Had the group dismissed the sales pitch, reward power would not even be a consideration. The third form of power that is present in the given scenario is legitimate power. Legitimate power can be described as the power that one person has over another because they hold an authoritative position over that person. Most organizations have a hierarchical structure of leadership and organizational leaders possess legitimate power equivalent to their position within the hierarchy. Legitimate power is intrinsic to positions of stature and is considered power by default. However, a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 55. Nt1310 Unit 1 Data Analysis Paper What is a dependency? Now that you have identified your critical IT assets, what are the dependency relationships between these assets? Use relationships to manage dependencies. Many assets have dependencies, or requirements that are beyond the asset itself in order to be complete, to work, or to build. For example a Build or an Implementation asset type might have dependencies that are required for the asset to be complete or valid. Assets may require certain binary and jar files that are dependencies for the build or implementation. Managing dependencies includes both defining the dependencies and then governing them by using policies. You must first identify what dependencies are part of your assets, then define them and then apply policies. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... A dependency can define how an asset version depends on another version of another asset. For example, a dependency might state, "Use version, 1.4.2 vs. 1.4.1 of common component A" or "Use the latest approved and tested version or latest build" . • 57. Evaluating A Multidimensional Trust Model For Computing... Abstract – Different models are used widely used in e–commerce to rate the products on the portal, but the comments are aggregated to compute seller reputation. The "all good reputation" problem is very prominent in the current e–commerce rating systems. But these scores are universal and it is difficult for potential buyers to buy from trustworthy sellers. In this paper, based on comments that buyers' express in the feedback section, I have proposed CommTrust for evaluation by mining the feedback comments. My contribution include: (1) I propose a multidimensional trust model for computing user feedback comments; (2) I also propose an Algorithm for Mining Feedback Comments for Dimension Ratings, Combining Techniques of NLP, LDA and PLSA. To the best of my knowledge, I am the pioneer on trust evaluation by mining feedback comments. 1. Introduction IN the recent years, there are tremendous improvements in various technologies in every field. It is touching every aspect of human life. One of the major trends now–a–days is e– commerce. Accurate evaluation of products is crucial for the success of the e–commerce system. Reputation calculation systems are bring used in various e–commerce enterprises. Various methods are employed to calculate ratings & reputations. • 59. The Structural Forces On The Extreme Elasticity Illnesses and their narratives tend to vary person by person, and place by place throughout the world. For this paper, I plan to emphasize how different structural factors play a huge role in how people interact with their conditions and the situations around them. The individual that I interviewed has had a recurring illness narrative with the extreme elasticity in her shoulders that has led to a variety of structural forces impacting her life. For example, the fact that she was raised by a single parent for the first few years of her life structured how she feels about being independent, along with her ability to be ambitious and to overcome obstacles in both her life and medical treatment. For this paper I plan to show how this individual, Anna, was able to interact with the structural forces that were impacting her view of her condition including stigma, labeling and views of dependency. In regards to her experience, Anna described it as a mix of emotions and an experience that she had to work very hard to overcome. Her reaction to the diagnosis, surgery and the ensuing physical therapy were influenced by both her parents and how other individuals, namely her guidance counselor, reacted towards her and her situation. Anna coped with her frustration from the surgery and later experiences in ways that her parents had socially constructed for her throughout her life. She describes how her main emotional reaction was frustration and determination towards finishing her goals ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 61. Forms Of Adversity In Everyone Leaves By Wendy Guerra When everyone leaves opportunities for personal growth arise. In Everyone Leaves by Wendy Guerra, the protagonist Nieve experiences many trials and tribulations starting at a young age leading into adulthood. Everyone she becomes attached to ends up leaving her life one way or another. In my opinion this is a gift and a curse. Although I've experienced many forms of adversity that was extremely hard for her. That same adversity actually watered her seed and allowed her to grow. This hardship leading to growth can me seen through Nieve and her mothers separation, relationship with her father, and experience at the art school. First, Nieve was extremely dependent on her mother, but this dependence was pulled from the rug below her once her mother was separated. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When Nieve's mother request to leave Cuba is denied she is forced to remain stationary until Nieve is eighteen. This then requires Nieve to go to an art school. Guerra writes, "I hate sundays. She clearly doesn't like the school and has an overall pessimistic view. This then carries over to hating Sundays as a whole. At the art school Nieve does not fit in and is completely okay with that. In previous times throughout Everyone Leaves, Nieve found herself trying to figure out why she didn't fit in and how she could fit in. Now she is just content with being her. Guerra writes, "I don't want to be a hippie like my mother...I want to be me...They'll never accept me...They want me to act like my mother"(119). • 63. The Contingency And The Resource Dependence Paradigms Play... Both the Contingency and the Resource Dependence Paradigms play a vital role in business. Though they have similarities, the also have differences. The following essay will describe these components. First, the contingency paradigm, a closed system, considers uncertainty and how changes in the environment affect the internal aspect of the firm (Tolbert & Hall, 2009, p. 162). The elements can include items such as size and technology, as it relates to customer demand to name a few. Another example might be that a small firm would function better in a centralized fashion verses a large firm that would benefit more from a decentralized method, whereas, fast paced environments may require high technology and slow paced industries do not. The point here is that there is not one best practice for leading or structuring a firm, hence, the company should fit within the environment depending on internal and external factors (Long, 2014). It is important to note, hhowever, coordination can become problematic in this theory. For illustration, let's say some environmental factor cause a company to change structure from a simple structure to a more complex one. Problems with coordination in the separate departments could present itself as communication and interaction is vastly different. The key here is for the firm to adapt to the environment, as well as, integrate the activity to make a seamless whole and reduce uncertainty. In fact, the best way to organize should be contingent upon ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Despite this there is still a clear difference between high–income countries and low–income countries. High– income countries are defined as countries with very productive economic systems where the majority of people have fairly high incomes, while low–income countries are defineed as having low economic systems where most people are poor and many do not meet living standards (Macionis et al., 2005, pg 439). The U.S. imports material for the sweatshops duty free where it is then assembled and manufactured into the good needed. When Mexico sends the goods back to the U.S. the American companies only pay duty on the material added by Mexico (NAFTA, 2011). Exploitation by high–income countries does not only happen in low–income countries, but as stated above, also in middle–income countries. Having sweatshops across the boarder is convenient and reduces costs, but there are places in the world where labor is even cheaper than in Mexico and companies such as Disney World ® take advantage of this as well. For years Disney World ® has been related to children, purity and innocence, but in the sweatshops where these products are being created, many of the workers are children working in dirt–poor conditions. In 2004 Haiti was an example of the inhuman conditions of Disney ® sweatshops, where workers were only making between 15–20 US dollars a month after taxes. For years companies have made the excuse that the cost of living in a low– income country is lower, but "everything is put into perspective when it 's noted that it costs 20 dollars a month to rent a one–room shack with no running water" (Kopp, 2005). In the past, children and even adults used to play table games or even do more exercises in their free time. However, nowadays computers are taking over the way people spend their free time, causing an antisocial disorder and a sedentary lifestyle. A research carried out by Young (1996a) indicates that dependency on computers, specifically Internet, had led to several problems at workplaces and in families or with social relations (cited in Widyanto & Griffiths, 2007). Opponents of this view, however, argue that this advantageous technology allows antisocial people to be more extroverted and raise their self–esteem. For example, many people can be more extroverted and even say thing that they will not say in person. Nevertheless, many researches have proved that users began to replace their social and physical activities, changed their sleeping patterns and their mood with the increasing dependency on computers. More people prefer to stay at home to be connecting with others through "virtual" friendship than socializing and meeting others in real life. An article by Kraut et al. (1998, ... The hospital was disordered and could not function efficiently. The dependency on technology is already starting to show horrible outcomes and circumstances. Despite occupations, the average person also depends far too much on technology. For example, most people in today's world can not wake up in the morning without using a technological device. The article "Almost 60% of 16–34 year olds use a phone as their primary timepiece," states that 48% of those ages 16–34 use a phone as an alarm. It has gotten to a point in which something so simple as waking up in the morning can not be accomplished without a phone being involved. People also depend on their phones for communication, directions, instructions, shopping, and answers. Across America there are always charities, religious groups, and civic clubs who are giving to the poor––from food giveaways, clothing giveaways, free tutoring, free health screenings, whatever else there is constantly something for the poor to benefit from. Through work readiness programs and a reform in food and clothing distribution, charities can cut the parasite of the dependent poor and prepare them to go out and earn what they need.
