3. Mission Mangal is a rousing story of an ordinary team
accomplishing an extraordinary feat by asphyxiating
challenges on-course through continuous innovation, grit
and determination. The story exhibits the power of a team
and the right attitude towards the goal as an underlying
factor behind the success of any mission. Alongside
entertainment with humor, the story serves as a leader’s
handbook in building high performing teams.
5. “ The story exhibits the power of a team and the right
attitude towards the goal as an underlying factor behind the
success of any mission.”
The movie begins with the failure of the GSLV
mission. Rakesh Dhawan (Akshay Kumar) takes the
outright responsibility of the failure even though
Tara (Vidya Balan) repeatedly admits that it was her
ignorance which led to the failure. Dhawan displays
the true spirit of a leader - ‘Success belongs to the
team and failure is yours.
10. In this movie, the project team calculates the project cost around 8000
Million (800 crore) but the top management only considers 4000 Million
(400 crore). But the Team leader accepts it and promises top management
to complete this project under this budget.
And he starts motivating his teammates to optimize the project cost under
the available budget. Team starts thinking to generate good ideas and the
Team leader keenly evacuates all ideas and takes strong decisions.
Also to motivate all they celebrated the science day.
12. • Personalize Projects Goal within Employees – Make the Team realize why they want to do it,
treat them like partners with ownership and accountability. They will give their best to make it a
success. In the movie Vidya Balan reminds her Team why they became scientists, and this is the
opportunity where they can realize their childhood dreams
• Each Team member is equally important for the success of the project, Creche and Ambient
Working environment make the Infrastructure Employee Friendly
• On the Spot Appreciation and Feedback: In the movie Akshay is bang on in giving his team the
appreciation as well as Feedback. He took the onus of the failure and pushed his Team in the front
of Media when the Mission was successful. These are the traits of a True Leader.
14. Although the majority of the key players of Mission Mangal were
women, there were also players across generation with different
personal ideologies and temperaments.
Irrespective of their individual personal ideologies, a leader has to bind the
team and walk towards achieving the common objective, by employing
different methods. The key take away from this leader was that, the leader
worked with each individual in their own style (even at a time when they were
on the verge of giving up) and convinced about the importance of achieving
the common goal in a way that they could relate to. The saying “ONE SIZE
DOES NOT FIT ALL” was well handled.
17. • This is the most important quality of a success full Team Leader that
he always shares credits of success with all team members equally. In
this movie also, after success of Mars Mission, the Team Leader
(Akshay Kumar) Gives credit to all his team members and celebrates
this success with keeping all of them in front of him. This gives a good
management lesson that a great Leader should also follow it.
• The movie celebrates the ‘woman power’ behind the success of
Mangalyaan. But, it is also about characters who belong to different
generations, with different ideologies and temperaments.
• A leader has to employ different methods to deal with this kind of a
team and that is exactly what Akshay Kumar’s character does in this
movie. He works with each individual in the team according to their
style and convinces them about the importance of achieving the goal
in a way that they relate with the most.
20. Akshay Kumar’s character is always shown to stand by his team. He takes their opinions and ideas into
account without showing off his authority over them. The rapport he shares with Vidya Balan’s
character in the movie opens up a whole new dimension in professional relationships – one that is
honest and open.
Also, Akshay Kumar’s character is shown to be favourable to all the women in the team by helping
them balance their work and personal lives. He goes all out in support of his team and makes sure
that they get the accolades for accomplishing the mission at the end.
22. • The movie is full of many such
examples where routine
observations trigger a thought
process for solving a bigger problem
Tara sindhe, (Vidya Balan’s
character) applies home science to
solving rocket science problems
(puri’s in hot oil with the gas turned
off and saving fuel). The structural
engineer reduces the weight of the
rocket by using material made from
ocean plastics. Of course, the movie
does oversimplify science to an
almost comical degree. However,
you do get the drift that application
of learnings across disciplines is the
key to solving problems.
24. • Dhawan’s statement “Karenge sir, pata nahi kaise par karengey,
karna hi padega (We will do it, sir, don’t know how but we will do it,
we will have to do it)” displayed his resolve towards the mission
inspiring initially skeptical ISRO Chairman (Vikram Gokhale) to agree
and extend greater resources towards Mars mission. When you
believe in yourself and back your functional plan with high resolve
and passion to achieve, other leaders start believing in you and often
start co-dreaming
28. Mission Mangal is a movie about grit, determination,
and the sheer desire to achieve a goal that
everybody else believes is ‘impossible’.
Conclusion
It is not just a movie that entertains, it is a movie that
inspires. It showcases the dynamics between a leader
and his team, and how a mission can be successful
with teamwork, passion and belief towards working
for a common goal. And, while it’s a tribute to ISRO
and the hard work of all the scientists, it does impart
great leadership lessons that everyone can try to
implement in their life.
