Historical Background Of The American And Vietnamese Stock...
1. Background and introduction to the research
The stock market, which comprises various stock exchanges, plays a leading role in the function of
the financial market (Dziawgo, 2012, p.60). Since there are a great number of issues such as stock
market crashes and the bursting of other financial bubbles, Vietnam still has a number of crucial
challenges to attend to. In this research project, the researcher will outline the historical background
of the American and Vietnamese Stock markets, and investigate the major differences between the
HSX and NYSE, in terms of operations and trading systems. Through gathering this information,
the researcher will be able to recommend what HSX can learn from NYSE to improve the
Vietnamese stock exchange in the foreseeable future.
1.1 Background of American Stock Market
The New York Stock Exchange, the oldest and largest stock market, was founded in 1792. The
major objective of the NYSE is establishing a place where peoples can trade their bonds, stocks and
other investments (Fuentes, 2016). In the beginning, the stock exchange was established as a group
of traders that turned into an unincorporated membership, before becoming a for–profit organization
(Waverly, 2016). NYSE is considered not only the largest stock exchange in terms of how many
dollars flow through it every day, but also a haven to various enterprises across the world (Fuentes,
2016). Currently, its worldwide capitalization is USD 21 trillion (Kiersz, 2014).

Vietnamese Culture Vs American Culture Research Paper
The United States of America (the USA) is a very culturally diverse country, which is primarily of
Western culture origin and form. Therefore, it is quite different to the culture of other countries
around the world, especially Eastern countries. This essay will focus on the most significant features
of American culture and identify some differences between American and Vietnamese culture.
Some key aspects are distinguishing in the culture of one of the world's most developed countries,
the USA. First, the USA is home to people with diverse cultural backgrounds. Almost every region
in the world has contributed to the American culture, as this country is known as a country of
immigrants. Therefore, diverse cultures interact with one another and bringing something new to the

First, the American lifestyle is more open than the Vietnamese lifestyle. As the living of the
American, people would like to move out of their parent's house when they are eighteen. They want
to decide everything by themselves, and want to have more personal right or freedom. However, in
Vietnam, everybody live with their parents until they get married. Another difference is about the
system of education. The US education is more comfortable and easier than the Vietnamese
education. The students in Vietnam have to take extra classes at home with their private teacher. The
parents will decide what major the student will get, and what school they will study at. It is seeming
that school and home are two places that students will stay most of the time. Finally, when the
American greets the strange peoples, they can greet anyone that they see first. In contrast, the
Vietnamese greet the head of a family or older person first, then the younger ones. Vietnamese
culture has a pretty strict education of greeting. Man and elder are considered as superior. It's really
important to show the respect to other people, especially the

Heritage Language Maintenance in Second–Generation Vietnamese Americans: an Investigation on

Lit¬erature review
This study investigates the attitudes of second–generation Vietnamese Americans towards
Vietnamese language maintenance. The purpose of this literature review is (1) to describe the
theoretical framework of the study and (2) to analyze and summarize current research on the
problem of practice.
In terms of the theoretical framework, the main theoretical emphasis is on heritage language
maintenance in the context of migration. The section will give a brief overview on types of language

147). In comparison, language shift means that a community completely abandons its language for
the sake of another one (Fishman, 1966). Anglicization. Empirical research generally supports a
pattern of language shift in relative language dominance from the first language to the second
language of immigrant populations that takes place within three generations of arrival to the United
States. This model of language, defined as Anglicization, was first established by the sociolinguists
Fishman (1966, 1972), and Veltman (1983).
The process is stated to occur as following: first of all, some individuals of the first immigrant
generations learn English, but they generally prefer to speak their native language, especially at
home. Thus, their children (the second generations) usually grow up as bilinguals, but many of them
prefer English, even in communicating with their first–generation parents (Lopez, 1996).
Consequently, by the third generations, the prevalent pattern is English monolingualism, and
knowledge of the mother tongue is fragmentary. Portes and Rumbaut ( 2005) elaborated this
occurrence as "By the third generation, foreign languages were a distant memory and ethnic
identities were social conveniences, displayed on selected occasions but subordinate to
overwhelming American selves" (p.986).
According to the study of Alba, Logan, Lutz and Stults (2002), this three–generation model of
language shift was documented

Essay On Vietnamese Immigration
After a bloody unpopular war that lasted nearly 20 years, one of the most unique immigration
patterns occurred from Vietnam to the United States that still prolongs today. Immigration to the
United States from the Vietnam War was a struggle, therefore America should create support
programs because the Vietnamese citizens were driven out of their war–torn country. The war left
the immigrants in desperate need of therapy, and they need help adapting to their new home in
America.
One of the most violent wars in history drove many of Vietnam's citizens out of the war–torn
nightmare of a country. Citizens were frightened for their lives, they didn't know what would happen
to them after the North overtook Vietnam, and furthermore, they fled. The ... Show more content on

After you fled your war–shredded country and left your beloved belongings behind, this was the
case for the immigrants. Most likely, recovering from that would be a difficulty, so the refugees
would need some therapy, preferably offered by American support groups. War can be emotionally
scarring to the person so therapy would be helpful. There were studies on their behavior as the
author said, "The purpose of this study was to examine the pre– and post–migration variables that
predict the psychological distress and self–destructive behavior for Vietnamese–Amerasians" the
immigrants were quite distressed (Bernak and Chung 1). Many immigrants were still haunted by the
war as in this quote, "Still haunted by the horrors of war and overwhelmed by the imminent collapse
of South Vietnam, they were also wracked over uncertainty over their future in a new land" many of
them were emotionally scarred (Tran 7). Many churches over the nation encouraged immigrants to
join Vietnamese communities so they could be with more of their kind for comfort. Many of those
communities are still here today like Little Saigon in Orange County, California. Some refugees
were still having flashbacks about the war so the U.S. government recommended that they should do
volunteer hours or part–time jobs so they can keep their mind off of it and so they can get some
profit. For example, some of them worked as lawn–mowers and cashiers and doing so would give
them a decent amount of money to start to partially support

The Between Vietnamese And American Education Essay
Entering Tran Phu High School, I remember there was a huge white banner with bold letters, "For
the sake of ten years, we must plant trees; for the sake of a hundred years, we should cultivate
people." In fact, the process of "cultivating people" requires lots of effort, as much as planting a tree.
To ensure a tree develops successfully, not only do people plant it into the ground, but they must
also take care of it regularly. Undoubtedly, sharing the same task as planting a tree, education plays
an integral role in contributing to people's success. Fortunately, having a chance to experience with
Vietnamese and American educational systems, I have realized each one has its own value of
educating people. Although both attempt to cultivate people, they have striking differences. One
difference between Vietnamese and American education is their rules regarding students'
appearances and their behaviors. First of all, most Vietnamese students must wear uniforms and
show up in a natural looking appearance. Specifically, students must wear white shirts and long
dark–blue pants and tuck in the shirts. Also, girls are not allowed to wear makeup, color their hair,
or even paint their nails. Boys must have a clean short haircut. Secondly, in Vietnam, students must
display appropriate manners at school such as showing fully respectable behavior towards their
teachers and not treating their classmates cruelly. For example, students must keep quiet during
lectures until teachers allow

Immigration 310
Assignment 4
Mexican American, Chinese American and Vietnamese American make up the 1.5 and second
generation today in US. The majority of these immigrants come from the humblest sectors of their
society on average they have only a few years of schooling or no schooling, limited urban job skills
and little or no knowledge of English. Immigrants to the United States are usually called first–
generation Americans, regardless of their citizenship status, and their children second–generation
Americans.
The difference between the pervious generation and second generation is that pervious generation
immigrants conflicted between loyalty to their native country and desire to belong in the new
country while the second generations are not. According the article "Becoming Ethnic or Becoming
American" assert that Mexican Americans were not considering themselves as American because
they realized that the other Americans were seeing them as Brown color and not belonging to
America. Another example in that article was the Peter who was a Chinese born in America, and
graduated on of the best universities in the US and works a large law office in Los Angles, The
article points out that peter consider himself as an American but when their clients asked him who
are you his response was I am an American but they didn't accept that answer because they were
expecting him to say I am Chinese. Even though Peter was not considering himself as Chinese

different social and cultural backgrounds. Our group consists of two Chinese–Americans and one
Vietnamese–American. Our report is on the social customs of our respective cultures. Our purpose is
to gather information about our social customs so that we can inform our audience. We researched
dining etiquette, gift–giving etiquette, wedding customs, festival celebrations, and family customs
for Chinese and Vietnamese cultures. We conducted our research using secondary sources, such as
the Web, along with primary sources, such as an interview. Our audience can benefit greatly because
they will become comfortable with the customs of the Chinese and Vietnamese people. They can

Both Chinese and westerners pay attention to presenting gifts to others, but there are some
differences between them. First of all, it is the differences of gift. The Chinese attach importance to
the practical value of the gift. For example, they may send quilt or household appliances to the new
couple. Chinese also like to present gifts with high prices due to their face or other compelled
reasons. But there are some stuff could not be presented as gift. For example, clock, which
pronunciation sound like attending a funeral of senior; shoes, which means breaking up. However,
the Americans always presenting gift like a bunch of flowers or a bottle of wine. They attach the
importance to the feeling of receiving gifts, not the gift itself. Generally speaking, they neither
present too expensive gifts nor too cheap gifts but pay attention to the gift packaging. Even it is the
very common gift, they will use color paper packaging with ribbon bandage to make it perfect as an

A Contrastive Analysis of Compliments in American English...
When a student gets a high score, his teacher usually says: "Good job!". When a child automatically
cleans up the room after playing, her parents are likely to say: "You are very good". When you go to
school wearing a new shirt, you probably hear from your friends: "That shirt looks nice on you".
Those utterances are called compliments which are used to show that someone likes someone else's
appearance, belongings, or work etc. Due to different cultural background and social values, English
and Vietnamese native speakers have different norms of complimenting as well as responding to
compliments. In this essay, I will discuss the notion of compliment made in American English and
Vietnamese in terms of topics, formulas, and responses. First ... Show more content on

For example, when a host prepares a good meal, an English speaking guest will say "The meal was
delicious". In the same situation, a Vietnamese guest will say "Chị nấu ăn ngon quá!" (You cook so
well!) Formulas of compliment Formulas of compliment drew much concern from linguists.
According to Maines and Wofson (1981), nine popular ways to give compliment are: NP is/looks
really ADJ. (Your blouse is beautiful) I really like/love NP. (I like your car) PRO is (really) (a) ADJ
NP. (That's a really nice wall hanging.) You V (a) really ADJ NP. (You did a really good job) You V
(NP) (really) ADV. (You really handled that situation well.) You have (a) ADJ NP. (You have such
beautiful hair) What a ADJ NP! (What a lovely baby you have!) ADJ NP! (Nice game!) Isn't NP
ADJ (Isn't your ring beautiful?) The first three are also the most commonly used structures in many
countries worldwide. From the examples in part 2, we can easily see that Vietnamese also follow
these formulaic structures when we want to show our appreciation to hearers. One difference,
however, is that unlike American, Vietnamese rarely use the first person pronoun but the second
person pronoun in their compliments. That is to say they will not say "I really like your new
haircut". A more appropriate way to express the same idea in Vietnamese is "Your

Vietnamese American Cancer Foundation: Case Study
Vietnamese American Cancer Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non–profit organization serving the cancer
care needs of underserved community members in Orange County and the greater Los Angeles area.
In 2002, it was established by a group of innovative and devoted community members, cancer
survivors, and physicians who saw the need for culturally and linguistically tailored resources and
services within the community. Since then, VACF has been fortunate enough to serve over 20,000
community members, including cancer patients, survivors, and their loved ones, providing them
with financial, medical, and social support. After 13 years of operations, VACF has grown to
become an important and reputable health resource for the disadvantaged members of the
community suffering from cancer. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

cultural values may be difficult to understand, but is necessary in reducing these health disparities.
To assist with this, VACF has partnered up with bilingual healthcare providers including local

improve patient–physician communication, patient adherence to treatment, and the likelihood of
patient follow–up and check–up among Vietnamese Americans. Further services include outreach,
education, patient navigation, free screenings, and care coordination. All of these services provided
by VACF are intended to empower community clients with the proper tools to tailor their own

Comparing Vietnam And The United States
The world has become more global as time is going through. However, there are still some
significant differences when comparing between developed country and developing country, such as
Vietnam and the United States. While the United States has been developed in many fields
(economy, religions, educational system..), Vietnam is still in transition process. They are located on
two different continents; they have so much difference on religious, languages, and practices
although those distinctions are seemed to get more narrow than before. People are trying to adopt
the different culture, as they still the keep their traditional practices of their own culture. Wedding
life, food, and the educational system are the typical things, which have the similarities and
differences at the same time.
Firstly, the wedding life for couples is significantly different even though it still has some few things
similar. In both countries, the couples will an engagement ceremony before getting to an actual
wedding ceremony. They both will receive wedding rings from their lovers. Also, they will
sometime hold a reception the celebration party in when they share theirs happiness to their friends
and happiness. On the other hand, there are still some contrasts between for the couple before and
after the wedding. In the U.S, the couples are free to choose theirs partners, their parents do not
interfere their children's decision, but the couples cannot get married unless they have permissions

Thuy Vo Dang: Vietnamese American Identity
The conference panel I attended was for Dr. Thuy Vo Dang, regarding Vietnamese American identity
and the role of archives in shaping epistemology. The speaker mentioned several points regarding
how the archive allowed for members of Vietnamese descent to offer their narrative, and essentially
give perspective to a community that had inherently omitted and censored itself. It is interesting to
have found out that at one point in time, the Vietnamese identity was primarily focused on the
Vietnam War, and the Vietnamese were primarily associated with labels such as victims or enemies.
From the presentation I learned that the Vietnamese American community identity changed as they
adopted a new mentality that stems from them being refugee. The media back then and even today
in regards to the Vietnam war had generalized and simplifying the act of being a refugee and being
displaced into the US. Vietnamese refugees were characterized as being indebted to the US, and
grateful. In addition, the action of becoming a refugee and escaping to the United States were
commonly described by various sources to have done so in desperate, cramped, and out of their
control. This description appears to have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thuy Vo Dang's presentation, I overall think the ideas she discussed and mentioned are important in
several ways. The idea that a community may lose an essential component of its identity is
something I believe is crucial to prevent. The archive process seems like the ideal manner to
preserve the narratives of the members of a community, as indicated by the example of Vietnamese
American immigrants. I would have like to have learned more about the other communities the
archive interacts with, specifically with the Hmong. Regarding what I know about the culture
associated with the Hmong, it may be possible that the archive process may have differed drastically
due to the Hmong and the Vietnamese having different experiences with immigrating to the US as

What Is Vietnamese American Culture
This week's reading, Jonathan Lee's "Vietnamese in America" (pages 128 to 138) in History of Asian
Americans: Exploring Diverse Roots, explores the resettlement process of Vietnamese refugees in
the United States. What interested me most was the intergenerational conflict between 1–generation
Vietnamese Americans and 1.5– and second–generation Vietnamese Americans. The "rescue
psychology," the guilt for losing the Vietnam War which fueled humanitarian efforts to help
displaced refugees, mitigated the resettlement of first wave refugees. The US government allocated
generous aid and instituted programs and policies in order to assist first wave refugees with their
resettlement and integration into American society (Lee 128). Furthermore, most ... Show more

Another source of conflict was the cultural barriers between parents and children. Through their
engagement with American peers and American media, 1.5– and second–generation Vietnamese
Americans familiarized themselves with American culture while their parents instilled in them
traditional values and customs. Vietnamese culture is maintained through, among other ways,
celebrating Vietnamese holidays like Tet and Tet Trung Thu; the formation of and engagement with
Vietnamese enclaves, such as Little Saigon; and foodways, the cultural practices relating to the
production and consumption of food (Lee, "Maintaining Cultural Continuity," Week 7). It is by
engaging in such practices that first–generation Vietnamese Americans successfully transmit
traditional values, morals, and customs to their children (Lee 134). In the discussion forum, Helen

Chinese words which occasionally makes it difficult to communicate with her family

challenges that developed my character and solidified my strengths. My parents came from a third–

of their strength and perseverance.
Unfortunately, Vietnamese Americans make up only a small percent of the total American

The act was implemented in 1989 and called The Vietnamese Amerasian Homecoming Act.
Amerasian is a term used to describe children of Vietnamese mothers and American fathers (or vice
versa). Enabling approximately 25,000 Amerasian children into the country with their immediate
families, the act allowed over 77,000 Vietnamese immigrants into the United States. Overall,
between 1981 and 2000, over 531,000 Vietnamese citizens, voluntarily immigrated to the United
States and were accepted. Although the United States progressively allowed more Vietnamese
immigrants into the country, if there were never limits to the number of legal refuges, tens of
thousands of lives may have been spared.
Currently, the United States continues to limit the number of immigrants permitted to enter the
country. Politicians are even trying to upgrade the charge to a felony offense if immigrants are
caught entering the United Sates illegally. The interesting part of this phenomenon is that the only
people who are native to America are the Native American Indians. Other than that, everyone's
family had immigrated to America at some point. Having said that, maybe we should be more
forthcoming when trying to pass a law by stating that now, since our family is already here, we
should start to limit the number of new immigrants that enter. I find the hypocrisy of our

Vietnamese Culture Vs American Identity
America's storied history of immigration has resulted in their being many different cultures from
across the globe interacting with each other within the same defined boundaries, complicating the
process of identity for many. One such case wherein migrants have a divisive role is along the US–
Mexico border. Amongst conservative Americans ― especially White Anglo–Saxon Protestants
(WASPs) ― national identity, the introduction of foreign migrants, Mexican immigrants in
particular, threatens their own traditionalistic national identity (Gries 2016, 24). This difference in
identity has resulted in heated conflicts between WASPs and immigrant communities in general.
Furthermore, this conflict has expanded exponentially since the election of President Donald Trump,
with many attempts being made to protect the "traditional" (and relatively homogeneous) American
identity (Biskupic 2017). Attacking communities of individuals that have immigrated to the USA is
not necessarily an accurate representation of the situation of immigrant communities. Notably,
despite claims made that immigrants are stealing "American jobs", there is no factual evidence
supporting this notion. Moreover, there are studies that directly dispute the validity of this claim, for

Traumatic Experiences And Depression Among Vietnamese...
Since Indochinese refugees started arriving in the United Sates, the main concern have been voiced
about consequences of the war and their experiences on their mental health. There haven't been any
studies that examined the complex relationships between psychological traumatic experiences and
depression among Vietnamese Americans. Studies on the mental health status of people after
traumatic experiences in war, Nazi concentration camps, and natural disasters found that traumatic
social and natural events are related to various forms of psychological problems among the victims
(Tran, 1993). Most refugees fled from Vietnam to the United States to get away from the horrifying
tragic. According to (Kunz, 1973), refugees are "pushed out of" their country, whereas immigrants
are "pulled away from" their homeland. Vietnamese respondents in this study were conceived and
grew up amid the war, and a significant number of them were specifically included in battle or
invested years in death camps, either in comrade detainment facilities or in refugee camps. While
others witnessed violent death of family members, or experienced rape, robbery, or starvation as
they escaped from Vietnam.

Essay on Jasper Jones by Craig Silvey
After having a thorough read of the novel 'Jasper Jones' by Craig Silvey, I have come to understand
the powerful effects of using written codes and conventions in novels. Silvey's impressive piece of
literature was carefully constructed through techniques such as characterization, socio–cultural
context, themes and intertexuality. By doing this, Silvey was accredited for convincing the readers,
appealing to their emotions and manipulating their beliefs and values to accept or agree with his
opinions on the issue covered in the novel. Characters play a major role in ensuring that the novels

The community also had issues with Vietnamese immigrants due to their different physical features
and the crisis Vietnam was in. For instance, Jeffrey and his family were harassed and Mr. Lu was
beaten by four drunken men. The messages are being conveyed as themes in the novel and Silvey
aims to inform Australians of the consequences for our actions. He explored ideas of racism and
discrimination, inequality, injustice and alcoholism. In the novel, Charlie is distressed to find both of
his friends being insulted and abused for the nationality. For example, Jasper is blames for Laura's
death and for every conflict he is held as scapegoat. In Jeffrey's case, his family is looked down
upon and their reputation as humans is disregarded and degraded. Silvey is trying to highlight the
stupidity of the people and show the importance of giving everyone a fair go. Jasper Jones has
strong intertextual links to an all–time favourite but a complex novel to understand, To kill a

Stereotyping And Ethnocentrism
Stereotyping and ethnocentrism shares similar themes, but are separated from an enormous
distinction that which can lead from a tasteless joke to genocide. Stereotyping is simply an overall
widespread generalization. They are formed from second hand information from close community

Stereotypes are usually formed in situations when a person would suffer from information overload
and in some cases, can accurately capture cultures or even celebrated within them (Neuliep, 2017,

are always portrayed as the nerdy side kick, doctors, or assistants. Their roles are weak and
desexualized, as demonstrated by Wai Choy character in mean girls. If they are able to get a
masculine role, they are either a Kung Fu warrior or an evil villain that is hell–bent on destroying
western civilization. Women actors on the other hand are over sexualized; as they most commonly
portrayed as sex workers. If they are able to steer clear of a role as a prostitute, they play roles of
quiet, submissive, and feeble characters (Levin, 2017). The film "Full Metal Jacket" prominently
showcases this stereotype as a Vietnamese sex worker says, "me love you long time" to a man in the
United States military is a famous example of this exploration (Nittle). This is creating a great
impact because our society as a whole looks at the people within the entertainment industry and the
content it produces as examples of how we want to be. This creates a box for the youth of Asian
cultures whether in the U.S. or elsewhere if that is their only example.
Vietnamese/Asian Culture in the American News Even in 2017, our country is still plagued with
tasteless stereotyping that even makes its way onto our news. An example of this was by Fox News
on the "O'Reilly Factor" hosted by Jesse Watters. Watters did a street interview segment on the

A Cultural Diaspora: Viet Town
A Cultural Diaspora: Viet Town Downtown Diversity Traveling on Colonial Drive into the heart of
Orlando, Florida, also known as downtown, brings you to a district filled with diversity and
excitement. Centered on the intersection of State Road 50 and Mills Avenue, the reflection of
Orlando's creativity, health, unity, balance, and diversity is apparent. Stretching about thirty blocks
long is a unique part of town. Here you won't find the high–priced brand name shops you would if
you were to visit a shopping mall. Instead, you'll find everything in between. From worn down
buildings covered in a fresh coat of paint to newly renovated shops, the vibrant colors and flashy
signs adorn every face and corner of the buildings. Once known as "Viet Town," Orlando's Mills–50
District is home to diverse Asian culture as well as Asian markets and restaurants. These can also be
found alongside tattoo parlors, coffee shops, and even martial arts schools. Although at first sight,
the area may seem to be dominated by Vietnamese venues, the previous label as "Viet Town" has
been proven to be inaccurate. Chewy & Tasty Although it is a dominant Vietnamese area, it is more
accurately an active Asian community. Being open to everyone, the doors to some stores literally
remain open during the day. This allows the smell of freshly made oriental goods and entrees to be
sensed from a leisurely stroll on the sidewalks. Also, during the weekends, the stores are packed
with customers. The

Leave The Past Behind
As the matter of fact, the racial diversity in the world is increasing day by day. However, people just
need to find out how to live comfortably with other of different history's background. It is true that
the process to overcome the past between nations and the discrimination between races takes an
amount of time. Nevertheless, people nowadays are opening a new chapter of life. In reality, people
all over the world now do not think about the painful past, the war or whatsoever anymore; instead,
they start to shake hand, make business or lifting embargoes which last decades. In the essay,

For example, the trading door between two countries had opened widely. In a short word, in the
essay Wride defined the 1.5 generation and explained the reasons for why young Vietnamese
immigration are not looking at the past anymore. According to the essay, author defined young
Vietnamese who now are living in the United States as 1.5 generation. The term is talking about
young Vietnamese people who were originally born in Vietnam but they grown up in America. And
because these people grew up in America, this group of people tends to have a little bit difference in
the way of thinking or to no longer look at the past to decide what to do for the future. In the essay
Wride wrote: "Generally, they have not inherited their parents' hatred of Communism or qualms
about trading with a former enemy." 1.5 generation is carefree about what happened to their parents,
to their ancestry, relatives and their people. Through several of 1.5 generation group's interviews,
they are certain don't really want to talk about the painful past which causes many lost for their
parents, dead of their people anymore. According to Tran, twenty–two years old, he said his hatred
toward Vietnam couldn't get to any place closer and be comparable to that of his parents toward the
Vietnam government. As Tran said, "I might not be able to remember the persecution they had to go

Being Chinese Vietnamese American
Being Chinese–Vietnamese American, I have always seen myself as being very unique. In addition
to celebrating the Western holidays such as Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's, and
Valentine's Day, my family celebrates our mixture of Chinese and Vietnamese cultures with two
other big holidays: Lunar New Year and Mid–Autumn Moon Festival. Although many cultures
celebrate holidays differently, one thing is always consistent in most of these celebrations: the
important role of food.
When I was a toddler, my family visited Vietnam for the first time together. It was the also the first
time my mom returned since she got married and immigrated to the United States. We arrived
around the time of the Mid–Autumn Festival that summer. The humid streets swelled with clusters
of vendors selling handmade paper lanterns, small candles, vibrant–colored toys, and a variety of
cakes.
Mooncakes, or Bánh Trung Thu, is the Vietnamese name for the Chinese–influenced bakery delight
traditionally eaten during the Mid–Autumn Festival. A key to the festival's celebration in addition to
lunar worship and moon–watching, was enjoying with family and friends an indispensable delicacy
with sips of warm tea. My aunt bought me a mooncake in the shape of a cute piglet. Being twice the
size of my hands combined, I happily cupped the clear plastic container tied together by a small red
ribbon. After anxiously skipping home with Mister Piggy (see Figure 2), I swiftly untied the red
ribbon and tore

Personal Narrative: I Am Vietnamese-American
I am Vietnamese–American. I am part of the largest population of refugee children in American
history, and one of the first of its community to be born in the American culture. With no prior
generation in my ethnic group, I have faced the stresses of growing up Vietnamese and as an
American. I faced the effects of acculturation throughout my life, and I have watched my parents'
health deteriorate. Both are borderline diabetic and have multiple vascular diseases. When I learned
how chronic diseases were more prevalent among minorities from low socioeconomic classes, it all
made sense. My family was a prime example. Since then, I have looked at my life in a different
perspective and wanted to help people like my family to control and manage our health. In addition,
when I visited Vietnam when I was 22, I was shocked to discover that my young female cousins
were already parents and had several previous miscarriages. Subsequently, I came to realize the
ongoing health crisis around women's health in Vietnam and other developing countries. Thus, I also
wanted to help women make healthier choices regarding their reproductive health.

to mind is durian fruit. Unlike the strawberries or cherries found at Safeway, durian fruit at first
glance does not even look edible. The entire fruit resembles a dirty old football, except that durian
weighs nearly three pounds. One–inch spikes and a tough brown outer peel cover the fruit, giving it
an intimidating look. Inside, yellow, kidney–shaped pieces line the peel like orange slices. As a

I dreamed of living in a big house like his, with nice new furniture. I wanted my parents to be just

once did Richie come home to an empty house. He always joyfully greeted his mother after school
by tossing his books on the couch, running over to give her a hug, and saying, "Mother, dear, I am
home." If I could not have all of this, I decided, I would settle for merely hanging out with the
white, American crowd. After all, Richie Cunningham hung out with white guys at Al's Cafe. To be
like Richie Cunningham, I concluded, was to be American.
Sometimes, after watching "Happy Days," I would pull a chair into the cramped little bathroom in
our apartment and look at myself in the cracked mirror above the rusty sink. I always felt sad. In the
cracked reflection, I saw a small face with no blue eyes, no red hair, and no red freckles. I wondered
if my skin would ever fade to the nicer shade of white. I even tried to imitate Richie's clean, accent–
free voice and realized that I could not get rid of the "Vietnamese" influence on my English. As the
years passed, I still lugged that same chair into the same decrepit bathroom, realizing more and more
every year that my dreams of gaining Richie's stature would never come true.

Asian Americans may also be discouraged to go into pre–collegiate teaching because they feel a
sense of personal inadequacy. In the United States, school is seen as a social service mission, where
teachers, who are primarily female, are tasked to teach students, especially those from working–
class and immigrant backgrounds, middle–class values. Chinese tradition, in contrast, has different
views on schooling. This tradition brings schooling to the local community with preexisting
hierarchies. Teachers, who are primarily male, maintain this status quo by upholding strict
intellectual standards determined by elite members of society. These teachers are revered as experts–

For Asian Americans who do decide to pursue teaching K–12 as a career, however, these feelings of
personal inadequacy still persist. In Nguyen's (2008) article focusing on five Vietnamese–American
preservice teachers, who did some or all of their K–12 education in Vietnam, Nguyen (2008) found
that her participants saw that "their distinct cultural and physical characteristics did not fir those of a
traditionally defined American teacher," which caused parents, but not students, to look down on
these teachers (p. 127). Like Gordon (2000), Nguyen (2008) found many of her participants were
trying to live up to the Confucian model of a teacher they were used to having in Vietnam but were
struggling to apply their perception of teaching within a United States context. Asian Americans
who would become teachers, then, seem to struggle with wanting to try to assert themselves as
experts in the classroom while also feeling alienated from the teaching profession because of the
typical notions of teaching in the United

Comparison of American and Vietnamese Culture
For this paper I will examine Vietnamese culture according to the five essential questions all
cultures must answer (according to Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck). I will then take those answers and
compare then to out culture here in America. I realize that some might argue that using North
American culture as a starting point is an attempt to simplify this writing, but I believe that any
initial examination of something new is most effectively done in comparison to what one already
knows. The first essential question Kluckhohn and Strodtbeck ask is "how do they view human
nature?" (Obilade 2008). The predominant view of human nature in Vietnam is deeply rooted in
Buddhist thought. Buddhism teaches that humans are born to suffer ... Show more content on

I'll answer that question by looking at the most fundamental social unit of any culture...the family. In
Vietnam, independence is far from desirable, much less respected. Family connections are so
powerful that it is not unheard of for as many as three generations to live in the same household
(often the direct result of grown children's desire to do whatever necessary to care for their aging
parents). Someone's success or failure is never seen as theirs alone, but is directly credible to the
family. If one wished to insult a
Vietnamese person, one could simply refer to the Vietnamese person as "ill bred"...thereby
damaging the individual and the family equally.
Family connections are so strong in fact, that a hard life is often viewed as the result of improper
behavior committed by ones' ancestors (Wubker 2008). In direct contrast to the Vietnamese, the
familial bonds within American families are much weaker. Familial closeness is mostly reserved for
the nuclear family (husband, wife, and their respective children). Most Americans would certainly
scoff at the idea of housing multiple generations within the same home. In fact, many couples make
a conscious effort following marriage to avoid living too close to the parents of either party. A
married couple's life is their life, and there (more often than not) is a line that can be crossed where
involvement comes to be seen as interference. American parents feel pride

Vietnam And The Vietnam War
Unfortunately whenever you ask an American about Vietnam there first thought ultimately goes to
the Vietnam War. Little do they refer to modern day Vietnam or are aware of current events. I know
this because I conducted a 25 person questionnaire. Yes, 25 people is a very small amount and
doesn't extend through every age group I am aware of this, but over the years from my personal
prospective of Americans that is all I have really ever perceived. It is important to realize that
Vietnam like any other country in the world; has a long extensive history which is important to
recognize to understand a cultures past. This also provides a trend to where that country is headed
based on its history. This is known as future studies. For what is a man without a past and a past
without consequence? The past is great and vast especially when it comes to specific man let alone a
country. Vietnam's past doesn't come without consequence those consequences are what we know as
modern day Vietnam. Speaking of modern day Vietnam, I interviewed a Vietnamese man my age
(20), whose full name is Viet Anh Nguyen. His background is vastly different than mine mainly
because of his cultural upbringings. Anyone with a different upbringing will be different whether
your 1 foot away or 100 miles away. It doesn't matter who you are or where you're from you will
always be different from everyone you meet. So why not get to know your difference's to create

Essay On Immigration To Vietnam
The vietnam war was a time of grief for many who left their homeland and traveled thousands of
miles on rocky ships to foreign lands with foreign languages. Homes were abandoned, paperwork
was feverishly gathered, and there was hope for a better life out of vietnam. Scattered within refugee
camps across the world, the "boat people" desperately waited for their new life, hoping for the best.
However depending on when they resettled and what their reason for leaving Vietnam was, these
immigrants and refugees had different experiences starting a new life socially and economically.

A policy called screening took place which sorting the Vietnamese refugees into those who left the
country due to political reasons and those who simply left to start a better life. Those who seeked a
better life were called "economic migrants" and had a smaller chance to move to a western country
than those who wanted escape from political repression. Places such as Hong Kong formally
endorsed the screening policy in 1989. They wanted to exterminate any hope that they would be able
to move to a western country and to discuss what should be done to people who refuse to go back to
Vietnam. In December 1989 Hong Kong deported 51 refugees back to Vietnam. They had believed
most of the 53,000 boat people in those camps were "economic migrants", and had apparently
forced those people out. They had also called for "volunteering" . The number of boat people was
expanding still, even though it has been years since the Vietnamese Conflict. Other Countries are

When these people arrived after the first wave of refugees, they received less federal refugee

getting a job, starting a family, and live happily. They also talk about how religion leads you to
happiness when you values love and kindness. Religion specifically taught me values such as

According to the article "The Korean Language in America", "Cultural identity is formed by the
complex configuration of one's awareness of one's own culture and a recognition of the social group

Everyone have a culture that they were born into, sometimes with a mix of two or three cultures.

American Culture Vs Vietnamese Culture
The United States and Vietnam have almost opposite cultural systems under Hofstede's cultural
dimensions. There are four main categories which is a power distance, uncertainty avoidance,
masculinity or feminine, and individualism or collectivism. Vietnamese has a high power distance
when the US have much lower power distance. For instance, they respect others by their ages
because of their culture. Usually an elder man is the most powerful person in a family and a decision
maker. Parents didn't used to allow to speak up anything from their children and also some physical
violence were accepted as discipline, but it's been changing. Uncertainly avoidance is weak in a

They don't call other's name without Mr. Ms. in Vietnamese. Even for younger people, they have a
word for it. They have very interesting verbal communication style which is they avoid to say no in
their conversation because it would be disrespectful. For instance, if someone invites you to a party
and you won't be able to go, but still you should say "yes" at the moment. Even if they said yes, they
might not show up. The host won't get mad or upset in a situation. In their culture, it's better for
them just not showing up with "yes" answer instead of saying "no" in person because they want to
keep their face positively. They highly use an indirect communication method. Indirect
communication method is common culture in Asia. Still, yes answer which means no would not be
acceptable in Japan. Vietnamese also avoid to correct others' mistake or praise only one person in

Historical Background Of The American And Vietnamese Stock...

  • 1. Historical Background Of The American And Vietnamese Stock... 1. Background and introduction to the research The stock market, which comprises various stock exchanges, plays a leading role in the function of the financial market (Dziawgo, 2012, p.60). Since there are a great number of issues such as stock market crashes and the bursting of other financial bubbles, Vietnam still has a number of crucial challenges to attend to. In this research project, the researcher will outline the historical background of the American and Vietnamese Stock markets, and investigate the major differences between the HSX and NYSE, in terms of operations and trading systems. Through gathering this information, the researcher will be able to recommend what HSX can learn from NYSE to improve the Vietnamese stock exchange in the foreseeable future. 1.1 Background of American Stock Market The New York Stock Exchange, the oldest and largest stock market, was founded in 1792. The major objective of the NYSE is establishing a place where peoples can trade their bonds, stocks and other investments (Fuentes, 2016). In the beginning, the stock exchange was established as a group of traders that turned into an unincorporated membership, before becoming a for–profit organization (Waverly, 2016). NYSE is considered not only the largest stock exchange in terms of how many dollars flow through it every day, but also a haven to various enterprises across the world (Fuentes, 2016). Currently, its worldwide capitalization is USD 21 trillion (Kiersz, 2014). 1.2 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Vietnamese Culture Vs American Culture Research Paper The United States of America (the USA) is a very culturally diverse country, which is primarily of Western culture origin and form. Therefore, it is quite different to the culture of other countries around the world, especially Eastern countries. This essay will focus on the most significant features of American culture and identify some differences between American and Vietnamese culture. Some key aspects are distinguishing in the culture of one of the world's most developed countries, the USA. First, the USA is home to people with diverse cultural backgrounds. Almost every region in the world has contributed to the American culture, as this country is known as a country of immigrants. Therefore, diverse cultures interact with one another and bringing something new to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First, the American lifestyle is more open than the Vietnamese lifestyle. As the living of the American, people would like to move out of their parent's house when they are eighteen. They want to decide everything by themselves, and want to have more personal right or freedom. However, in Vietnam, everybody live with their parents until they get married. Another difference is about the system of education. The US education is more comfortable and easier than the Vietnamese education. The students in Vietnam have to take extra classes at home with their private teacher. The parents will decide what major the student will get, and what school they will study at. It is seeming that school and home are two places that students will stay most of the time. Finally, when the American greets the strange peoples, they can greet anyone that they see first. In contrast, the Vietnamese greet the head of a family or older person first, then the younger ones. Vietnamese culture has a pretty strict education of greeting. Man and elder are considered as superior. It's really important to show the respect to other people, especially the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Heritage Language Maintenance in Second–Generation Vietnamese Americans: an Investigation on Attitudes Chi Phan ERE220 Spring 2017 California State University, Fresno Lit¬erature review This study investigates the attitudes of second–generation Vietnamese Americans towards Vietnamese language maintenance. The purpose of this literature review is (1) to describe the theoretical framework of the study and (2) to analyze and summarize current research on the problem of practice. In terms of the theoretical framework, the main theoretical emphasis is on heritage language maintenance in the context of migration. The section will give a brief overview on types of language contact phenomena, in particular (1a) language maintenance and shift; and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 147). In comparison, language shift means that a community completely abandons its language for the sake of another one (Fishman, 1966). Anglicization. Empirical research generally supports a pattern of language shift in relative language dominance from the first language to the second language of immigrant populations that takes place within three generations of arrival to the United States. This model of language, defined as Anglicization, was first established by the sociolinguists Fishman (1966, 1972), and Veltman (1983). The process is stated to occur as following: first of all, some individuals of the first immigrant generations learn English, but they generally prefer to speak their native language, especially at home. Thus, their children (the second generations) usually grow up as bilinguals, but many of them prefer English, even in communicating with their first–generation parents (Lopez, 1996). Consequently, by the third generations, the prevalent pattern is English monolingualism, and knowledge of the mother tongue is fragmentary. Portes and Rumbaut ( 2005) elaborated this occurrence as "By the third generation, foreign languages were a distant memory and ethnic identities were social conveniences, displayed on selected occasions but subordinate to overwhelming American selves" (p.986). According to the study of Alba, Logan, Lutz and Stults (2002), this three–generation model of language shift was documented ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Essay On Vietnamese Immigration After a bloody unpopular war that lasted nearly 20 years, one of the most unique immigration patterns occurred from Vietnam to the United States that still prolongs today. Immigration to the United States from the Vietnam War was a struggle, therefore America should create support programs because the Vietnamese citizens were driven out of their war–torn country. The war left the immigrants in desperate need of therapy, and they need help adapting to their new home in America. One of the most violent wars in history drove many of Vietnam's citizens out of the war–torn nightmare of a country. Citizens were frightened for their lives, they didn't know what would happen to them after the North overtook Vietnam, and furthermore, they fled. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... After you fled your war–shredded country and left your beloved belongings behind, this was the case for the immigrants. Most likely, recovering from that would be a difficulty, so the refugees would need some therapy, preferably offered by American support groups. War can be emotionally scarring to the person so therapy would be helpful. There were studies on their behavior as the author said, "The purpose of this study was to examine the pre– and post–migration variables that predict the psychological distress and self–destructive behavior for Vietnamese–Amerasians" the immigrants were quite distressed (Bernak and Chung 1). Many immigrants were still haunted by the war as in this quote, "Still haunted by the horrors of war and overwhelmed by the imminent collapse of South Vietnam, they were also wracked over uncertainty over their future in a new land" many of them were emotionally scarred (Tran 7). Many churches over the nation encouraged immigrants to join Vietnamese communities so they could be with more of their kind for comfort. Many of those communities are still here today like Little Saigon in Orange County, California. Some refugees were still having flashbacks about the war so the U.S. government recommended that they should do volunteer hours or part–time jobs so they can keep their mind off of it and so they can get some profit. For example, some of them worked as lawn–mowers and cashiers and doing so would give them a decent amount of money to start to partially support ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Between Vietnamese And American Education Essay Entering Tran Phu High School, I remember there was a huge white banner with bold letters, "For the sake of ten years, we must plant trees; for the sake of a hundred years, we should cultivate people." In fact, the process of "cultivating people" requires lots of effort, as much as planting a tree. To ensure a tree develops successfully, not only do people plant it into the ground, but they must also take care of it regularly. Undoubtedly, sharing the same task as planting a tree, education plays an integral role in contributing to people's success. Fortunately, having a chance to experience with Vietnamese and American educational systems, I have realized each one has its own value of educating people. Although both attempt to cultivate people, they have striking differences. One difference between Vietnamese and American education is their rules regarding students' appearances and their behaviors. First of all, most Vietnamese students must wear uniforms and show up in a natural looking appearance. Specifically, students must wear white shirts and long dark–blue pants and tuck in the shirts. Also, girls are not allowed to wear makeup, color their hair, or even paint their nails. Boys must have a clean short haircut. Secondly, in Vietnam, students must display appropriate manners at school such as showing fully respectable behavior towards their teachers and not treating their classmates cruelly. For example, students must keep quiet during lectures until teachers allow ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Mexican American, Chinese American And Vietnamese American Mohamud Warsame Immigration 310 Assignment 4 Mexican American, Chinese American and Vietnamese American make up the 1.5 and second generation today in US. The majority of these immigrants come from the humblest sectors of their society on average they have only a few years of schooling or no schooling, limited urban job skills and little or no knowledge of English. Immigrants to the United States are usually called first– generation Americans, regardless of their citizenship status, and their children second–generation Americans. The difference between the pervious generation and second generation is that pervious generation immigrants conflicted between loyalty to their native country and desire to belong in the new country while the second generations are not. According the article "Becoming Ethnic or Becoming American" assert that Mexican Americans were not considering themselves as American because they realized that the other Americans were seeing them as Brown color and not belonging to America. Another example in that article was the Peter who was a Chinese born in America, and graduated on of the best universities in the US and works a large law office in Los Angles, The article points out that peter consider himself as an American but when their clients asked him who are you his response was I am an American but they didn't accept that answer because they were expecting him to say I am Chinese. Both Chinese and westerners pay attention to presenting gifts to others, but there are some differences between them. First of all, it is the differences of gift. Chinese also like to present gifts with high prices due to their face or other compelled reasons. But there are some stuff could not be presented as gift. For example, clock, which pronunciation sound like attending a funeral of senior; shoes, which means breaking up. • 15. A Contrastive Analysis of Compliments in American English... When a student gets a high score, his teacher usually says: "Good job!". When a child automatically cleans up the room after playing, her parents are likely to say: "You are very good". When you go to school wearing a new shirt, you probably hear from your friends: "That shirt looks nice on you". Those utterances are called compliments which are used to show that someone likes someone else's appearance, belongings, or work etc. Due to different cultural background and social values, English and Vietnamese native speakers have different norms of complimenting as well as responding to compliments. In this essay, I will discuss the notion of compliment made in American English and Vietnamese in terms of topics, formulas, and responses. First ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, when a host prepares a good meal, an English speaking guest will say "The meal was delicious". In the same situation, a Vietnamese guest will say "Chị nấu ăn ngon quá!" (You cook so well!) Formulas of compliment Formulas of compliment drew much concern from linguists. According to Maines and Wofson (1981), nine popular ways to give compliment are: NP is/looks really ADJ. (Your blouse is beautiful) I really like/love NP. (I like your car) PRO is (really) (a) ADJ NP. (That's a really nice wall hanging.) You V (a) really ADJ NP. (You did a really good job) You V (NP) (really) ADV. (You really handled that situation well.) You have (a) ADJ NP. (You have such beautiful hair) What a ADJ NP! (What a lovely baby you have!) ADJ NP! (Nice game!) Isn't NP ADJ (Isn't your ring beautiful?) The first three are also the most commonly used structures in many countries worldwide. From the examples in part 2, we can easily see that Vietnamese also follow these formulaic structures when we want to show our appreciation to hearers. One difference, however, is that unlike American, Vietnamese rarely use the first person pronoun but the second person pronoun in their compliments. That is to say they will not say "I really like your new haircut". A more appropriate way to express the same idea in Vietnamese is "Your ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 19. Comparing Vietnam And The United States The world has become more global as time is going through. However, there are still some significant differences when comparing between developed country and developing country, such as Vietnam and the United States. While the United States has been developed in many fields (economy, religions, educational system..), Vietnam is still in transition process. They are located on two different continents; they have so much difference on religious, languages, and practices although those distinctions are seemed to get more narrow than before. People are trying to adopt the different culture, as they still the keep their traditional practices of their own culture. Wedding life, food, and the educational system are the typical things, which have the similarities and differences at the same time. Firstly, the wedding life for couples is significantly different even though it still has some few things similar. In both countries, the couples will an engagement ceremony before getting to an actual wedding ceremony. They both will receive wedding rings from their lovers. Also, they will sometime hold a reception the celebration party in when they share theirs happiness to their friends and happiness. On the other hand, there are still some contrasts between for the couple before and after the wedding. • 21. Thuy Vo Dang: Vietnamese American Identity The conference panel I attended was for Dr. Thuy Vo Dang, regarding Vietnamese American identity and the role of archives in shaping epistemology. The speaker mentioned several points regarding how the archive allowed for members of Vietnamese descent to offer their narrative, and essentially give perspective to a community that had inherently omitted and censored itself. It is interesting to have found out that at one point in time, the Vietnamese identity was primarily focused on the Vietnam War, and the Vietnamese were primarily associated with labels such as victims or enemies. From the presentation I learned that the Vietnamese American community identity changed as they adopted a new mentality that stems from them being refugee. The media back then and even today in regards to the Vietnam war had generalized and simplifying the act of being a refugee and being displaced into the US. What Is Vietnamese American Culture This week's reading, Jonathan Lee's "Vietnamese in America" (pages 128 to 138) in History of Asian Americans: Exploring Diverse Roots, explores the resettlement process of Vietnamese refugees in the United States. What interested me most was the intergenerational conflict between 1–generation Vietnamese Americans and 1.5– and second–generation Vietnamese Americans. The "rescue psychology," the guilt for losing the Vietnam War which fueled humanitarian efforts to help displaced refugees, mitigated the resettlement of first wave refugees. The US government allocated generous aid and instituted programs and policies in order to assist first wave refugees with their resettlement and integration into American society (Lee 128). Furthermore, most ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another source of conflict was the cultural barriers between parents and children. Through their engagement with American peers and American media, 1.5– and second–generation Vietnamese Americans familiarized themselves with American culture while their parents instilled in them traditional values and customs. Vietnamese culture is maintained through, among other ways, celebrating Vietnamese holidays like Tet and Tet Trung Thu; the formation of and engagement with Vietnamese enclaves, such as Little Saigon; and foodways, the cultural practices relating to the production and consumption of food (Lee, "Maintaining Cultural Continuity," Week 7). It is by engaging in such practices that first–generation Vietnamese Americans successfully transmit traditional values, morals, and customs to their children (Lee 134). I grew up eating may different things such as dim sum, hot pot, Hong shao niu rou, and more. Growing up as a Chinese–Vietnamese–American was very confusing. I was a living contradiction. • 29. Vietnamese And American Educational Systems Essay Entering Tran Phu high school, I remember there was a huge white banner with bold letters, "For the sake of ten years, we must plant trees; for the sake of a hundred years, we should cultivate people." In fact, the process of "cultivating people" requires lots of effort as much as planting a tree. To ensure a tree develops successfully, not only do people plant it into the ground, but they must also take care of it regularly. Undoubtedly, playing an integral role in contributing to people's success, education shares the same task as planting a tree. Fortunately, having a chance to be exposed to Vietnamese and American educational systems, I have realized each one has its own value of educating people. Although both attempt to cultivate people, they have striking differences. One difference between Vietnamese and American education is their rules on students' appearances and their behaviors. First of all, most Vietnamese students must wear uniforms and show up in natural looking appearance. Specifically, students must wear white shirts and long dark–blue pants and tuck in the shirts. Also, girls are not allowed to wear make–up, dye their hairs, or even paint their nails. Boys must have a clean short hair–cut. Secondly, in Vietnam, students must display appropriate manners at school such as showing a fully respectable behavior towards their teachers and not treating their classmates cruelly. For example, students must keep quiet during lectures until teachers allow them to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I will talk about how these incredible and resilient people fought to succeed it a world that seemed to hold the odds against them. The culture, beliefs, and challenges of Vietnamese people are a precise paradigm of their strength and perseverance. Unfortunately, Vietnamese Americans make up only a small percent of the total American Population today. Overall, between 1981 and 2000, over 531,000 Vietnamese citizens, voluntarily immigrated to the United States and were accepted. Although the United States progressively allowed more Vietnamese immigrants into the country, if there were never limits to the number of legal refuges, tens of thousands of lives may have been spared. Currently, the United States continues to limit the number of immigrants permitted to enter the country. Politicians are even trying to upgrade the charge to a felony offense if immigrants are caught entering the United Sates illegally. The interesting part of this phenomenon is that the only people who are native to America are the Native American Indians. Other than that, everyone's family had immigrated to America at some point. • 35. Vietnamese Culture Vs American Identity America's storied history of immigration has resulted in their being many different cultures from across the globe interacting with each other within the same defined boundaries, complicating the process of identity for many. One such case wherein migrants have a divisive role is along the US– Mexico border. Amongst conservative Americans ― especially White Anglo–Saxon Protestants (WASPs) ― national identity, the introduction of foreign migrants, Mexican immigrants in particular, threatens their own traditionalistic national identity (Gries 2016, 24). This difference in identity has resulted in heated conflicts between WASPs and immigrant communities in general. Furthermore, this conflict has expanded exponentially since the election of President Donald Trump, with many attempts being made to protect the "traditional" (and relatively homogeneous) American identity (Biskupic 2017). Attacking communities of individuals that have immigrated to the USA is not necessarily an accurate representation of the situation of immigrant communities. Since Indochinese refugees started arriving in the United Sates, the main concern have been voiced about consequences of the war and their experiences on their mental health. There haven't been any studies that examined the complex relationships between psychological traumatic experiences and depression among Vietnamese Americans. Studies on the mental health status of people after traumatic experiences in war, Nazi concentration camps, and natural disasters found that traumatic social and natural events are related to various forms of psychological problems among the victims (Tran, 1993). Most refugees fled from Vietnam to the United States to get away from the horrifying tragic. According to (Kunz, 1973), refugees are "pushed out of" their country, whereas immigrants are "pulled away from" their homeland. Vietnamese respondents in this study were conceived and grew up amid the war, and a significant number of them were specifically included in battle or invested years in death camps, either in comrade detainment facilities or in refugee camps. While others witnessed violent death of family members, or experienced rape, robbery, or starvation as they escaped from Vietnam. Silvey's impressive piece of literature was carefully constructed through techniques such as characterization, socio–cultural context, themes and intertexuality. By doing this, Silvey was accredited for convincing the readers, appealing to their emotions and manipulating their beliefs and values to accept or agree with his opinions on the issue covered in the novel. They are formed from second hand information from close community member that use outdated information or are not an expert with that particular culture/community. Stereotypes are usually formed in situations when a person would suffer from information overload and in some cases, can accurately capture cultures or even celebrated within them (Neuliep, 2017, 191). Women actors on the other hand are over sexualized; as they most commonly portrayed as sex workers. In Vietnam, independence is far from desirable, much less respected. Family connections are so powerful that it is not unheard of for as many as three generations to live in the same household (often the direct result of grown children's desire to do whatever necessary to care for their aging parents). Someone's success or failure is never seen as theirs alone, but is directly credible to the family. If one wished to insult a Vietnamese person, one could simply refer to the Vietnamese person as "ill bred"...thereby damaging the individual and the family equally. Family connections are so strong in fact, that a hard life is often viewed as the result of improper behavior committed by ones' ancestors (Wubker 2008). In direct contrast to the Vietnamese, the familial bonds within American families are much weaker. Familial closeness is mostly reserved for the nuclear family (husband, wife, and their respective children). Most Americans would certainly scoff at the idea of housing multiple generations within the same home. In fact, many couples make a conscious effort following marriage to avoid living too close to the parents of either party. • 61. Vietnam And The Vietnam War Unfortunately whenever you ask an American about Vietnam there first thought ultimately goes to the Vietnam War. Little do they refer to modern day Vietnam or are aware of current events. I know this because I conducted a 25 person questionnaire. Yes, 25 people is a very small amount and doesn't extend through every age group I am aware of this, but over the years from my personal prospective of Americans that is all I have really ever perceived. It is important to realize that Vietnam like any other country in the world; has a long extensive history which is important to recognize to understand a cultures past. This also provides a trend to where that country is headed based on its history. This is known as future studies. For what is a man without a past and a past without consequence? The past is great and vast especially when it comes to specific man let alone a country. Vietnam's past doesn't come without consequence those consequences are what we know as modern day Vietnam. Speaking of modern day Vietnam, I interviewed a Vietnamese man my age (20), whose full name is Viet Anh Nguyen. His background is vastly different than mine mainly because of his cultural upbringings. Anyone with a different upbringing will be different whether your 1 foot away or 100 miles away. It doesn't matter who you are or where you're from you will always be different from everyone you meet. So why not get to know your difference's to create similarity and create serenity? • 65. Essay On Immigration To Vietnam The vietnam war was a time of grief for many who left their homeland and traveled thousands of miles on rocky ships to foreign lands with foreign languages. Homes were abandoned, paperwork was feverishly gathered, and there was hope for a better life out of vietnam. Scattered within refugee camps across the world, the "boat people" desperately waited for their new life, hoping for the best. However depending on when they resettled and what their reason for leaving Vietnam was, these immigrants and refugees had different experiences starting a new life socially and economically. Tensions grew in Vietnam and the U.S. forces were sent overseas. The people of Vietnam had mixed reactions, some waited and hoped for things to get better, and some ... A policy called screening took place which sorting the Vietnamese refugees into those who left the country due to political reasons and those who simply left to start a better life. Those who seeked a better life were called "economic migrants" and had a smaller chance to move to a western country than those who wanted escape from political repression. Places such as Hong Kong formally endorsed the screening policy in 1989. They wanted to exterminate any hope that they would be able to move to a western country and to discuss what should be done to people who refuse to go back to Vietnam. In December 1989 Hong Kong deported 51 refugees back to Vietnam. They had believed most of the 53,000 boat people in those camps were "economic migrants", and had apparently forced those people out. They had also called for "volunteering" . The number of boat people was expanding still, even though it has been years since the Vietnamese Conflict. Other Countries are also said to have pushed and rejected 10,000 refugees. The world had possibly forgotten about the aftermath of the war that ended years ago. When these people arrived after the first wave of refugees, they received less federal refugee assistance which dropped from 36 months to 8 months. The Vietnamese refugees had a hard time staying out of poverty or has a hard time improving compared to earlier arrivers. Many new refugees were attracted to California for its welfare benefits, education, warm ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Vietnamese American Cultural Beliefs Journal 4 Cultural beliefs about happiness. I'm Vietnamese American. I came to America twelve years ago. I'd say I am equally influenced by both Vietnamese and American culture. Growing up as a Catholic, I learned that happiness is the life that we receive when we are in union with God in heaven. How do we get there is something I had to learn from both textbooks and experiences. My parents would often talk about growing up, getting a job, starting a family, and live happily. They also talk about how religion leads you to happiness when you values love and kindness. Religion specifically taught me values such as persistence, perseverance, humility, forgiveness, and charity. These values is reflected in the way I speak, think, and view life. ... Vietnamese has a high power distance when the US have much lower power distance. For instance, they respect others by their ages because of their culture. Usually an elder man is the most powerful person in a family and a decision maker. For instance, if someone invites you to a party and you won't be able to go, but still you should say "yes" at the moment. Even if they said yes, they might not show up. The host won't get mad or upset in a situation. In their culture, it's better for them just not showing up with "yes" answer instead of saying "no" in person because they want to keep their face positively. They highly use an indirect communication method. Indirect communication method is common culture in Asia. Still, yes answer which means no would not be acceptable in Japan.
