Rap music was chosen as the genre for the magazine because it is very popular and also the designer's favorite type of music. The magazine cover features a medium close-up of the main artist wearing clothing stereotypical of rappers like baseball caps and gold chains. Basic colors like black, white, grey and red are used for the font to make it stand out against the usually dark background and allow the main image to attract attention.
2. Chosen genre
• a style of popular music, developed by disc jockeys and urban blacks in the late 1970s, in
which an insistent, recurring beat pattern provides the background and counterpoint for
rapid, slangy, and often boastful rhyming patter glibly intoned by a vocalist or vocalists.
Expand. Also called rap. Rap originally came from the west coast but in recent years has
blossomed into the UK and other regions of the world and is fast becoming on of the most
well known genres of music
3. Forms and conventions
• Colours- black, white, grey, red, blue these basic colours allow the magazine
font to stand out to the audience.
• Lighting is usually dark for the background which allows the main image to
stand out
• Medium close up for the main image
• Sell lines are the same colour as the masthead
4. Aspects of iconography
• When looking at magazine covers rappers are always seen wearing baseball
caps, gold chains, bling etc.. This makes the main image stand out as it
shows a different range of colours, it also shows a lot about the artist
him/herself, this is important as it gives the magazine the look of a hip-hop
5. Why I chose rap music
• I decided to use rap music as it is a very popular genre and it is also my
favorite type of music so it would allow me to thrive when designing my
magazine cover. Also when adding the font to my cover it will allow me to
use large and colourful fonts. When taking the images the models are stood
in a natural position.
