2. Project Title: Designing and simulation analysis of smart grid in power management to monitor
and improve the power factor through Wireless communication.
Abstract:
The wireless Technology is now in its prime. Wireless technology plays an important role in
remote accessing. In this project, we are going to monitor the power of
the system especially in the inductive loads and controlling the power line using power
factor remotely through pc via wireless communication. All of the work we design and
simulate in PROTEUS SOFTWARE and compare the result.
Introduction
This project will greatly reduce the manpower, save time and will operate efficiently
through remote pc anywhere in the industries. This project puts forth the first step in
achieving the desired target and save cost.
Related Work Done
Wireless power transfer has been a popular topic of recent research. Most research has
been done to address the limitations of coil-to-coil efficiency. However, little has been done
to address the problem associated with the low input power factor with which the systems
operate. Wireless communications provide both flexibility and cost savings in deployment
and maintenance compared to wire line deployments. Wireless can be deployed anywhere
and anytime. With wireless communications we gain ease of deployment, flexibility, and
cost savings. Common challenges associated with wireless communications are probabilistic
channel behaviour, accidental and directed interference or jamming, and eavesdropping or
unauthorized modification of the communications if not protected by authentication and
encryption.
The concept for data flow of monitoring device is shown in Figure 1. First, the data of the
Of inductive load is transferred through microcontroller by wire to the wireless converter by
transforming into Serial communication. This serial communication collecting data from
microcontroller is transferred by wireless converter to the monitoring place where TCP/IP
exists. The data is received by the router at the monitoring place and then it is transferred
in form of Ethernet by wireless router and it is sent to laptop in which which wirelesses
access point is present or pc through serial communication.
3. Problem Statement
In an electric power system, a load with a low power factor draws more current than a load
with a high power factor for the same amount of useful power transferred. The higher
currents increase the energy lost in the inductive loads. So the problem is to how to monitor
and maintain the power factor value high in order to reduce the wastage of useful power.
Proposed Solution
As in inductive load we have real power which is the useful power and a
reactive power which is the non useful or opposing power. So through current
sensor and voltage sensor we will monitor the power continuously and send
the ratio of real and apparent power (which is actually the power factor) to the
microcontroller, which can be observed through LCD. The microcontroller will
send the power factor through Zigbee wireless module to PC. Now through PC
we will apply the power factor correcting technique and the capacitor bank will
apply suitable capacitance to reduce the reactive power and increase the
power factor value as shown in Figure1.
