1. In the opening to our horror movie ‘Erotomania’, we were able to represent our social
group displayed through the categories of age and difference in gender.
Age – We were able to represent the on screen social group as rule breaking and
represent the social group as being young and liking to party hard.
Breaking the rules - underage drinking
Mis en scene is also used in representing the social groups as rule breaking, strong
willed and part vein. The social group in our opening sequence was represented as
rule breaking effectively by the use of under age drinking, smoking and unknown
quiet house parties. This was effective as this is how we perceived the social group to
be via our general knowledge and group research. The use of fire was also effective in
representing a possible danger and fire is usually related to trouble/smoking.
The on screen social group were represented as breaking the rules via the use of
underage drinking, smoking and quiet unknown parties. We were able to represent
this as the teenagers represented on stage were seen drinking alcohol and smoking
under the age of 18. The use of fire was also represented this as we were able to show
the characters as being rule breaking as they are seen to be playing with fire by
lighting up images and playing with a lighter.
Like to have fun and party hard
The party scene is used to represent this
Gender –
Teen Males
Aggressive - potentially dangerous - sexual predictor
Suspicious - psychologically unstable
This is represented well during the opening of our movie
Teen Females –
Emotionally vulnerable - innocent/pure
Mis en scene was used effectively in our opening via the use of representation of
character costumes and settings. Main character (victim) in the opening to our movie
was represented well in the way that we had needed. The victim was presented in an
effective tilting shot at one point, which was effective as we were able to show the
audience how the character and social group were presented. In this shot our victim
was represented in a white, body covering top, a long formal skirt and tights. This was
very effective in representing the character as an innocent, pure yet vulnerable female.
This is because she is presented in a formal, well covered up costume.
Strong willed – bitchy
2. Sound was also used in representing our target audience. There was not too much
evidence of this during the opening to our movie as we decided to use a scary, deep
toned theme tune, which covered the normal sound recorded in the opening to our
movie. Due to this there were not too many external sound effects on non-diegetic
sounds. Although sound was not produced too much, we were able to represent our
social group via the use of dialogue. The representation of strong willed females were
presented well due to the use of dialogue add when the victim stands up to one
possible villain when she confronts him by telling him “ its got nothing to do with
you”. The representation of age and `bitchyness` was also effective in the opening to
our horror movie as dialogue was also used in representation. The female villain
suspect as represented this by telling another character “I hate her she’s a total bitch”
and “I hate her with a passion”. The use of language such as “bitch” and the phrase “I
hate her with a passion”, which represents the age group via the typical use of
language/slang and the accent present.
Importance of status – look – sexually luring
Mis en scene was also used to represent the audience as vein and the importance of
the look of teenagers in today’s society. The use of make up was used on a number of
occasions to represent this well as the make up was used on a number of occasions by
the female characters. This was also presented by the use of a number of images
included on the wall of pictures used at parts of our opening sequence to a horror
movie.
