2. Narrative Understanding
Although there is no narrative storyline to this music video due to the
nature of the performance element, there is a underlying concept
that I want to come across to the audience. In the treatment, I
declared that I wanted the idea that the musical instruments being
played are all in her imagination. I also stated that I didn't want to
over emphasise this in the video to allow the audience members to
realise/ interpret it in their own unique way.
3. To check that this idea came across, when I initially finished the first edit I
showed it to a few people to get their opinions and thoughts on the video and
the concept.
This feedback was extremely useful to me as the general feedback was
positive and on the right lines of the concept. However, it was also a popular
that the band were in the room with her. They asked why she wasn't shown
with the band, but once everything was explained they reassured me in saying
that it was a clever concept and they like that the video gives the audience
something to think about.
Another thing that was pointed out was that I had not put enough shots of the
instruments in the second half of the video and that the musical element
slacked a bit in that half. I had edited it to show how she gradually through out
the song gets more and more into it, and wanted to show this by focusing on
her more. I assumed the instruments would be acknowledged throughou the
song without the visual aid, however this feedback told me that idea was not
the case.
4. Even though the feedback told me that the concept wasn't clearly
obvious at first, the feedback about how much they appreciate the video
for giving audiences something to create for themselves was very useful.
Therefore, I think the video at the moment portrays the concept to the
amount in which it should before it becomes hand fed to the viewer.
I will return to the edit and add a few more shots of the instruments
playing to keep this idea of the live element consistent during the whole
video. This was a mistake on my behalf, perhaps due to the amount of
times I had seen the video whilst editing it, I could not see the clear
mistakes without this useful feedback.
6. Sticking with the black and white theme, I finished the edit and
wanted to make more of the shots black and white other than the
initial walking in shot:
7. I had a dilemma as I had the idea of making all the shots of
musical instruments black and white, to portray the idea of them
been imagined/ separate to the action of her performing.
However, this wouldn't work due to the first shot of the video being
black and white. I decided to keep this shot black and white as it
introduces the theme and style straight away. Straight after this
beginning shot is the instruments, so I wanted a contrast to be
introduced with colour coming into the video which worked this
way around.
8. I then had the idea of making all the shots of her black and white
but the whole set portrays this colour scheme so well but also has
the random colours from her jewellery add the to visual impact
which I didn't want to take away. Plus it would have taken away the
impressiveness of the studio shots by grading the colours and
quality out.
The natural warmth of the shot is taking away and makes it too dull
to watch as it is not as visually appealing compared to before.
