Massive Open Online Course, is a term used to describe web
technologies that have enabled educators to create virtual
classrooms for thousands of students accessible across the world.
Early MOOCs often emphasized open-access features, such as
open licensing of content, structure and learning goals, to promote
the reuse and remixing of resources.
In the last 5 years a new form of education has arisen, Massive
Open Online Courses (MOOCs).
“Ananth Agrawal, CEO of edX, predicted that in less than a year
(2012) one of edX's partner universities would offer a purely online
degree. Three years have passed since then and there is no sign of
purely online degree from any of its partner institutions.”
In September 2013, edX
announced a partnership
with Google to develop
Open edX, an open
source platform and its
MOOC.org, a site for non-
