1. Slide 2 - The present-day automotive
industry has given rise to modern and
advanced technology. This can easily be
observed with the mass production and
proliferation of new units of the various
brands of automobiles which, through the
years, have made name worldwide, among
which are such renowned names as Toyota,
Nissan, Mitsubishi, Honda, Hyundai, Kia,
etc.
Slide 3 - With modernization and
advancement in technology come the high
cost of industry, high cost of materials, spare
parts and the like. Viewed against this
scenario, many motorists and even auto
mechanics could hardly afford the expenses
or cost concomitant to the demands of the
industry as dictated by both local and global
trends. For instance, in terms of auto
servicing, both the auto mechanic and the
motorist usually have to deal with spiraling
cost of the service rendered, much so
because the auto mechanic has to make use
of computerized or expensive tools in fixing
or repairing an automobile. In worse cases,
there are even times when an auto mechanic
could not find a suitable material/tool with
which to perform his task.
Slide 4 - Taking this reality into
consideration, it is interesting to note that
the innovative device which the main
researcher called AUTOMOTIVE VALVE
SPRING PRESSING DEVICE has been the
result of a need to fix/repair the engine of a
Toyota Corolla car of a fellow worker.
Initially, the researcher found it quite
difficult to undertake the repair by reason of
lack of a suitable tool from among the sets
of tools available in his automotive shop.
Slide 5 - Thus, such difficulty served as a
challenge for him as to how he could find a
way by which the repair could be
undertaken. After much time of thinking it
over, he finally came up with an improvised
device using minimal materials (GI pipe, flat
bar, and board) available in his shop.
Practically, such device came about as an
“invention”, a product of his creativity. By
dint of circumstances, the main researcher
was able to produce an innovative and
handy device that could make easy an auto
repair vis-à-vis cylinder head of an engine,
more specifically in removing and installing
valve, valve spring, valve retainer and valve
lock.
Slide 6 - OBJECTIVES
With the device having been
developed by the principal researcher, the
following now serve as the objectives or
purposes:
General
To serve as an innovative device in
the auto-mechanical area of the NEUST
College of Industrial Technology
Specific
To show the practicality and
advantage of having such a handy,
innovative device even in the absence or
unavailability of other similar automotive
tools manufactured in the market (e.g., C-
Type Valve Compressor)
2. Slide 7 -Research Design
As conceptualized by the
main researcher, the device consists of such
materials as GI pipe, flat bar, and board
which were all available at the automotive
shop of the CIT.
The researcher then came up
with said innovative device using the
following procedures and design:
(1) The GI pipe was cut with a hand
hacksaw to serve as handle. It measures 1
inch in diameter and 25 inches in length.
______
Slide 8 - (2) The stand, also a GI pipe, was
cut measuring 13 inches long and 1 and ¼
inch in diameter.
(3) The support/inner stand measures
11 inches long, with a diameter of 1 inch.
(4) The bolt, measuring ¼ inch in
diameter and 1 and ½ inch in length, was
used as a lock that can be adjusted to suit the
height needed as it is utilized in removing or
installing the valve, valve spring, valve
retainer and valve lock.
______
Slide 9 - (5) The base to which the support
and inner stand are attached measures 9
inches wide, 12 inches long, and 3/16 of an
inch thick.
(6) The pressing device consists of a
sliding and pivoting link through which the
handle slides. It is designed as sliding so that
in operating the device, the auto mechanic
can easily adjust the distance and the angle
needed for the pressing device to remove the
valve lock from the valve stem grove, and to
install a new valve or a reconditioned valve.
