PRESENT PERFECT SIMPLE SIMPLE PAST
Unfinished actions that started in the past and continue to
the present.
(Acciones no concluidas en el pasado que continuan en
el presente.)
Example:
Affirmative I have lived there since 2010.
(He vivido allí desde 2010.)
Negative I haven’t worked there since 1999.
(No he trabajado alli desde 1999.)
Finished actions.
(Acciones concluidas.)
Example:
Affirmative I lived there a year ago.
(Vivé allí hace un año)
Negative I didn’t live there a year ago.
(No Viví allí hace un año.)
Interrogative Did you work there a year ago?

Definition:
The past simple is used to talk about
actions in the past that have finished. It talks
about 'then' and definitely excludes 'now'.
El pasado simple es usado para hablar de
acciones en el pasado que han terminado. Habla
del “entonces” y definitivamente del “ahora”.
The present perfect simple to look back on
actions in the past from the present. It
always includes 'now'.
El pretérito perfecto simple se usa para ver
hacia acciones del pasado desde el presente.
Siempre incluye “ahora”
Examples:
1. Your daughter has kissed her best friend. (Tu hija ha besado a su mejor amigo.)
2. My sister has eaten apples all her life. (Mi hermana ha comido manzanas toda su vida.)
We can use the time phrase 'for' with both forms, but with different meanings. (Podemos
usar la expresión de tiempo “por” con ambas formas, pero con diferentes significados.)
I studied in CEPRE UNI for a couple of months before I entered university.

Past simple is used: Present perfect is used:

• Actions that finished in a definite time in
the past

When did they arrive?
An hour ago.
• Actions which happened in an indefinite time
in the past and with visible results in the
present
I have lost my key. (I can’t find it now)
Have you seen Ann? (She is not here now)
• To describe very recent actions
She has just moved to a larger flat.
• To talk about past states that cannot happen
again
Shakespeare was a writer. He wrote plays and
poems. (from 1564 to 1616)
• For actions which finished in the past, one after
the other.
She lived in this house for ten years and then
moved to another one. (sequence of past
actions)
• For actions which started in the past and continue in
the present
She has lived in this flat since 2005.
She has lived there for three years.
(She still lives there!)
• To describe experiences in our lifetime

(Acciones no concluidas en el pasado que continuan en el presente.) Example: Affirmative I have lived there since 2010. (He vivido allí desde 2010.) Negative I haven’t worked there since 1999. (No he trabajado alli desde 1999.) Finished actions. (Acciones concluidas.) Example: Affirmative I lived there a year ago. (Vivé allí hace un año) Negative I didn’t live there a year ago. (No Viví allí hace un año.) Interrogative Did you work there a year ago? (¿Viviste allí hace un año?) Interrogative Have you lived there since 2010? (¿Has vivido alli desde 2010?)
