Government Over Regulation Of The United States

Government Over–Regulation The United States has slowly conformed to the new ways of the
Western policy of democratic socialism in order to achieve equality in the eyes of the law, but with
this the necessary regulatory compliance of all citizens must be provided. If all American citizens do
agree to abide by the rules implemented by the United States, the freedom that they came here for
would be nonexistent, and they would no longer have the ability to truly live the infamous
'American dream'. The economy is also beginning to move away from the capitalist ways and move
toward an ideology of equality among the wealth and incomes of the people, and the only apparent
way to achieve ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Where government has gone beyond its limits is in deciding to protect us from ourselves" (Tanner
1). Joseph Stiglitz, a Nobel Prize winner, Chief Economist at Roosevelt Institute, best–selling
author, and a professor at Columbia University explains the problems with the current economy in
the United States in his book Rewriting the Rules of the American Economy. He explains that even
though the one percent of the United States population is living a prosperous life, the remaining
ninety–nine percent are being hurt by this reality (Stiglitz 8). From this it can be concluded that the
regulations currently being pressed upon the majority of the population are hurting more than
benefitting. Capitalism is defined as "an economic and political system in which a country 's trade
and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state" (Oxford Dictionary
1). There has been a longing to find a balance between this and socialism. The laissez–faire is the
commonly known economic idea of a government refraining from interfering in the free–market in
order to allow the people to control their own means of production and selling of goods. This seems
to be ruined by the over–regulation of the economy by the government because much of the US
economic benefits rely on the free market. Also, capitalism allows for people to voluntarily take part
in making their own wealth. Without this, competition among businesses would be gone and

Competitive Intensity And Government Regulations
Firm's international experience, that is, the number of years a firm has been operating in the
international markets plays a vital role to determine the pricing process followed by the firm
(Katsikeas and Morgan, 1994). They found out that for less experienced firms, pricing issue creates
less problem, whereas more experienced firms perceive pricing to be a difficult issue, although both
type of firms consider pricing very important for making export decision.
Cavusgil and Zou (1994) considered two aspects of industry characteristics – competitive intensity
and government regulations. The result of their study perceives a positive relation between
technology orientation of the industry and export price competitiveness. A market is characterized
by the competition among local and international suppliers, the threat of new entrants and the
bargaining power of customers (Obadia, 2013). The author concludes that for certain aspects of
exporting, specifically, volume discount, credit term, and special circumstances for new product
launch, exporter manipulate export prices to cope with competitive intensity and favor the
importers, although they do not manipulate the price with fluctuating exchange rates. Other studies
established the relation between technology and standardization. The higher the frequency of
technological changes associated with an industry, the more likely the firms to use standardized
products (Samiee and Roth, 1992). This is in line of the argument that in

Regulation Of The United States Federal Government
Regulation The way a society functions is strictly based on the type of culture in which they reside
in. A individuals, habits, actions and personality are all shaped, by the infrastructure, rules, and
regulations that they have to abide by while residing in society. It is not to say that these policies are
a negative notion, but they do certainly shape your lifestyle, and your choices in many ways. By
taking a look at regulation it is important to note that, our government has a huge role in the lives of
its citizens it resides over. The United States Federal government has its exercise of sovereignty, in
other–words, it has legal and accepted authority to regulate people's living within a certain

Regulation is a major activity at all levels of government. As society becomes more complex,
regulations must grow and evolved to meet the demands of a developing society. Concentrating
more on the role of regulation, it can be noted that it is a system that helps protect individuals from
one another. So from buyers to sellers; from employee to employer; tenants to landlords, and so on.
Regulations is also implemented to alleviate human suffering and promote overall welfare. For
instance, aid in the form of Social Security and to Veterans, natural disaster relief, regulation of
pollution and toxins, as well as temporary assistance for the unemployed. Last, and most
importantly regulation is implemented to minimize and eliminate corruption and abuse of power by
government agencies or officials. (Book Source) Taking into account the terms and ideologies stated
above, it is easily understood why, we as individuals have decided for so many years, to abide by
this social contract with our government. We gain the most benefit from this quid pro quo
relationship. Administrative Law and Regulatory Agencies Since we abide by this social contract, it
is important to understand how this system works for its citizens that it has jurisdiction over. By
looking from the outside in, how our government operates is illustrated by its

With the vast growth of industrialization way back in the 19 th century, concerns came on how these
industries and technologies were impacting on the social, cultural and economic well–being of the
people. The negative effects got overlooked with nobody to speak against them and protect
livelihoods of the people. The federal government later then came up regulatory bodies to put
industries on the check and see that they provide quality services and products that are not harmful
to the people. Various types of regulation were set up. Product safety which charged with ensuring

Problems facing regulatory government supports deregulation. First, the cost in regulatory
jurisdictions is quite high. Regulated markets tend to offer fewer benefits to society than free
markets. Also, private sectors are self–regulating by employing independent external auditors
whereas it is a general observation that lawsuits are an incentive to provision quality services by
firms. Regulation reforms enshrined in the constitution monitor the legislation, executive and
judicial structure of the regulatory agencies as the government seeks to create and maintain a better
working environment in the society. Traditional managerial approach to governing administration is
characterized by red–tape and bureaucratic one sided decision making whereas the new public
management approach focuses mainly on bilateral decision–making and is compliance–oriented.
Political strategies have transformed from a self–centered, corrupt inclusion in the agencies to a
more open centered approach that focuses on its citizens' welfare, just as the legalistic approach
focuses on maintaining reasonability in the regulation process with keen observation of the rule of

Producer Protection, Prior Market Structure and the Effects of Government Regulation
Assignment on Regulatory Economics
1/5/2012 INTRODUCTION
The direct economic regulation of business by independent government commissions has a one–
hundred year history on the North American continent. It is generally asserted that the purpose of
such commissions is to protect consumers from exploitation by limiting the economic powers of
certain firms having pervasive effects on the public interest (for example, transportation companies
and public utilities). . However, the findings of the relatively few em–pirical studies of the economic
effects of regulation indicate that important differences actually do exist in these effects. The ...

One group should include those industries whose prior market structure was a natural monopoly.
This group would include electric utilities, natural gas pipelines, local gas distribution companies,
telephone companies, etc. The second group should consist of industries having oligopolistic or
competitive market structures prior to the implementation of regulation, for example, airlines, motor
carriers, railroads, and water carriers.
If the producer–protection hypothesis is descriptive of the fundamental effects of regulation, one
would expect to find regulation having little or no effect on the first group, whereas the second
group would experience substantial changes following the effective implementation of regulation.
NATURAL MONOPOLY INDUSTRIES
Among other things, effective monopolies are characterized by relatively high price levels, by
extensive price discrimination, and by rates of return on investment exceeding those attainable if the
firm operated in a competitive market structure. Thus, the producer–protection hypothesis implies
that following the implementation of regulation over natural monopolies, the price level will be
essentially unchanged and will be above marginal costs, price discrimination will continue to be
widely practiced, and rates of return will remain above those which would exist under competition.

Government Intervention Vs. Self Regulation
Business Ethics: Government Intervention vs. Self–Regulation Wealth brings power and power can
at times bring corruption. In today's economy where individuals are no longer the concern when it
comes to wealth, the global attention is drawn to corporations who hold the majority of our wealth.
This calls for us to take cetain measures that can ensure the existence of a socially responsible
behavior amongst all corporations, and these measures could be introduced in many forms, quite
possibly the most favorable currently being government intervention. However, government
intervention is not always the best method for ensuring social responsibility and ethical behavior
amongst corporations. A much better alternative is a self–regulatory economy along with a
combination of freedom and transparency in order to ensure responsible behavior in corporations, in
addition to an increase in efficiency and flexibility in regards to resources and innovation. The first
step is to realize exactly how out of control government regulations have become. In his article at
Wall Street Journal, Regulations Run Amok–And How to Fight Back, Charles Murray notes "the
number of federal crimes you could commit as of 2007 (the last year they were tallied) was about
4,450, a %50 increase since just 1980." Furthermore, Murray brings to light the fact that other than a
handful few, these crimes are not acts that are bad or evil in nature, and instead are labeled crimes
simply because the government

American citizens are getting tired of the governments increasing control of the economy, health
care, and a dodgy recovery plan (Engstrom, 2). According to a national survey, "Voters are starting
to realize that the regulations implemented by government are beginning to intrude more so on
people's personal lives" (Thompson and Tringali, 2). The survey also said that, "A majority of both
conservatives (61%) and liberals (54%) say they are both negatively impacted by regulations that
tell American business which workers to hire" (Thompson and Tringali, 2). Most people believe that
government intervention makes citizens feel less accountable and that someone else will baby and

"Lawmakers and regulators construct complex cost benefit calculations to justify the rules, but they
never account for the erosion of liberty inherent in each and every one" said Diane (Katz, 1).
Seventy four percent of voters in the United States believe that businesses and consumers are over
regulated (Thompson and Tringali, 2). "Also, majorities agree that the increasing number of
regulations have created uncertainty for large and small businesses (66%), and that agencies who
enforce regulations fail to consider that their decisions lead to increased prices for consumers and
job losses (69%)," according to a poll (Thompson and Tringali, 2). Ironically, Barak Obama has
been trying to convince and persuade voters that he does actually care about jobs (Barone, 1). A lot
of Americans are putting all their attention on healthcare, which is good, but [Americans] do not
need to lose sight of the people in Congress because they are the ones that created it and now
Americans need to get rid of these liberals and prevent such a thing like this from happening again
(Langer, 1). One of the many regulations is healthcare and that "There hardly could be a more inapt

New Government Regulations Should Be Implemented
New government regulations geared towards curbing over–packaging in today's businesses should
be implemented, to prevent and increase the focus on the negative environmental impacts businesses
cause as a result of disposable products and packaging. If businesses where to make the change from
disposable resources to reusable resources, then businesses would be able to significantly reduce
their costs and their environmental footprint. In essence, businesses who are concerned with
reducing costs and being environmentally conscious shouldn't need to worry about the
implementation of government regulations. Because, if the government were to implement
regulations on the use of disposable materials, then businesses would see a financial benefit from the
switch to reusable materials. Furthermore, if these policies had efforts aimed toward curbing over–
packaging it would significantly increase the world's abilities to maintain a substantial living
environment in the future. Keeping the future in mind, the need for these kinds of regulations will
only continue to grow, because as time passes the amount of packages sent out from companies is
exponentially growing. The change from disposable packaging and resources to reusable packaging
and resources in businesses would help them to both decrease overall costs and to decrease their
environmental impact. In hospitals this fact remains especially true, according to Reiner Grimmond

Globalisation and Government Regulation in Uk

UK have been heavily impacted by globalisation due to the benefits of attractive cheap labour
available overseas, establish subsidiaries to overcome exportation, producing globally standardised
products to achieve economies of scale and gaining a market share in local/region of a country. This
is the age of globalisation, a term which has numerous definition (Dunning, 1997), but generally
refers to a process of "tighter international linkages on a world–wide scale" (De Wit and Meyer,
1998). On the other hand, UK has also become a major host country for foreign multinational

Traditional manufacturing countries mainly situated in the South–east Asia and Eastern Europe have
gained corporate interests in attractive cheap labour (Meffert and Bloch, 1991). The loss of jobs
contributes to the already worsening problem of unemployment and harms regional economy. A
BBC report (Davis, 2003) shows that "Factory production fell by 4% in 2002, the largest annual
slump since 1991" Corporate Insolvencies has occurred because companies are unable to keep up
with global integration. MG Rover went into administration on April 8, with the loss of over 5,000
jobs (Harwood, 2005) Similar threats are also emitted from the service industry where there seems
to be a trend towards outsourcing services to low labour cost countries e.g. call–centres to India.
Such business voyage is encouraging as BT 's turnover increased by 11 percent in 2002 (Turner and
Gardiner, 2007). Again the argument is about job loss; in addition, the pressure to out–source may
cause businesses to drive down ‘real pay ' levels in order to compete more effectively (Blackwood,
2006). On the other hand, foreign investments have also created jobs in the UK. The amount of
opportunities created depends on • Direct jobs: size of the foreign owned industry and the intensity
of its production process. • In direct jobs: referring to the connections with local suppliers and their
reputation. The UK government estimated that

The Importance Of Government Regulations
Government regulation is important to society. A protection to both society and the citizens, criminal
law allows for government intervention on the daily issues of the country
(Saunders and Bromwich, 2016, p. 15). Regulations purposes listed here are just a few:
Protecting the environment, regulating the marketplace, and regulating individuals (Saunders and
Bromwich, 2016, p. 16–25). The government is concerned with the amount of damage caused by
human beings to earth. Water supplies are being damaged through agricultural by–products,
industries are spewing chemicals in the air, water, and ground, and the disposal of waste in our lands
and water (Saunders and Bromwich, 2016, p. 16). The government regulates the destruction of earth
by creating ways to incentivize and protect the environment (Saunders and
Bromwich, 2016, p. 16).
In the marketplace, rich businesses cause white collar crimes. Fraud, scams, or misleading
advertisements are regulated by the government through criminal law (Saunders and
Bromwich, 2016, p. 20–21). Furthermore, the government is obligated to regulate the individuals
within society (Saunders and Bromwich, 2016, p. 23–25). Crime happens because of human greed
and corruption, and the government needs to set down rules to prevent and protect the law abiding
citizens. There will be three types of government regulations that will be addressed. The first
method of government regulation is taxes (Saunders and Bromwich, 2016, p. 27). By

How involved should the Government be when it comes to regulation of the Internet? There are
many different issues regarding internet regulation. Should Internet users be responsible for
controlling how they use the Internet? Since the internet has been introduced to Americans there
have been many debates on how involved the Government should be in regulating topics such as
violent games, gambling, and sexual content.
The Internet is a very useful source for many things. It has almost become a way of life for some
people It has faded out things such as post offices, shopping malls and even telephones to some
extent. So since it has become such an asset in peoples lives then should there be laws to prevent
chaos on the Internet?

So what should the Government do? The Government has power to control who can gamble and
who can purchace certain items at a casino or store but how can the government possibly stop a
teenager from doing this online? It needs to be up to the parent to control how their child uses the
Internet.
Another issue is video games on the internet. There are a lot of violent video games now days, most
of which you have to be eighteen to purchase. There are also a lot of violent video games on the
Internet that you have to be eighteen to play but all you have to do is check the little box that says
yes I am eighteen or over, and who would know any different but that person?
A lot of people are very adament about self–regulation. Any other kind of government regulation on
the internet would be a very long process. It's not just the U.S. that has access to this tool. It is the
World Wide Web, meanig it's world wide. There would need to be some sort of committee formed
and it would have to consist of officials from different countries in order to have any law or
regulation because the Internet does not belong to the U.S., it belongs to the world.
Self–regulation is, I believe, the best kind of regulation for the Internet. If a parent does not want
their child playing violent video games or downloading pornographic images then

The effects of Government Regulations on the Economy
The U.S. economy has somewhat recovered from the recession that began in 2008, but from my
recent findings I have realized that there has been an unbalance in that recovery. Investments have
fallen and businesses investments have been weak. The government regulates securities markets, the
environment, and even serves as a safety–net for businesses that are at risk for bankruptcy. In many
efforts to mend the economy, regulations are costing the United States trillions of dollars. These
regulations are costly, but may be necessary if it produces an even larger economic and social
benefit. Regulations have many different functions like, restricting harmful products, regulating the

I'm not saying that the government should not do anything to help the poor but raising minimum
wage may not be the best way to go about helping the poor either.
The EPA's fracking study is another example of how government regulations hamper the
performance of the economy. There should be measures in place to regulate clean and efficient ways
to run businesses, however, when looking at the bigger picture, I feel that the cost of running a clean
and efficient operation should not take precedence over the condition of the economy and our way
of life. The EPA's 5–year study on hydraulic fracturing on groundwater contamination appeared to
be a beneficial plan to alleviate water contamination, but as I have found from reading through
multiple articles in the class resources, there is cost when one side is benefiting from a situation. The
fact that it took 5 years and $30 million dollars for the EPA to develop a risk assessment did strike
me as odd. Personally, if I was being paid millions of dollars to conduct a study on water
contamination, I would prolong the study for as long as I could as well. Expenses like these are not
the only reason why the U.S. is in debt, but it certainly doesn't help the state of the economy either.
On the other hand, even though the EPA may be costly

The Importance Of Government Regulation On Individual Freedom
Milton Freidman and Rose Freidman were two economists who met in Chicago, were married in
1938, and continued their careers together as economists. The two of them firmly held the belief that
any government regulation was an infringement on individual freedom. Freidman and Freidman's
minor thesis is that the government in a free society should be entirely limited to the following
areas: enforcing law and order, preventing coercion of one individual by another, enforcing legally
binding contracts and rights of private property owners, and providing resources for the defense and
the monetary system. They construct their assertion of government regulation being an infringement
on individual rights by generously providing a multitude of arguments in favor of their political
view. They commence by first stating that economic freedom, the freedom consumers possess to
buy and sell whatever they so choose, is a "component of freedom properly understood," (p. 220)
and therefore to alter it is to place a curb on freedom. For example, if the government comes to a
decision to pass a law placing a quota on a manufactured good that consumers would have the
aspiration to purchase but are incapable of procuring enough money to purchase said product
because its price has been altered to become prohibitive, the freedom of the individual is henceforth
imposed upon. Similarly, if the government forces people to use the government–provided postal
service, then my freedom to set up a competitive business in competition with the government
service is curtailed. I only partially agree with this political view. The government should actively
attempt to interfere as little as possible, but not to the extent Freidman and Freidman argue.
Countries should have a free market but also set price caps to forestall price gouging like during
Hurricane Irma. In order to protect the people, the people themselves have to sacrifice a certain
amount of freedom. It is up to the people to decide how much. For example, if we gave up every
shred up freedom to the government and the government protected us by never allowing us the
privilege of exiting our homes, a dramatic reduction in murders and robberies would take place, but
we would not

Government Regulations Of Information Technology
Introduction to Government Regulations in Information Technology Government Regulations in
Information Technology refer to the various laws and statutes that apply to the transfer and/or
modification of information and technology enacted by different legislative bodies of the
government and the regulatory bodies that enforce the laws as they relate to information technology.
There are a number of laws that directly apply to the Information Technology sector. There are also
a number of organizations/agency that work with the government to ensure the laws are obeyed and
prosecute individuals found violating the laws. The American Government has over the years
created and passed new laws through its history. The emergence of the field of Information
Technology was not exempt from these laws. The Government has been evolving with the times to

Government Regulation By The Private Sector Essay
Introduction
Today, our nation is under constant attack by hackers, terrorist groups and other enemies.
Unfortunately regardless of how innovative our government or private sectors have become with
securing the network systems, the frequency and intensity of the attacks have only increased. Over
the last decade, security breaches and cyber–attacks have highlighted how dependent our nation is
on its critical infrastructure. It was concluded that a total of 54% of cyber–attacks targeted the US in
2013 (Watkins, n.d). Through experiences such as September 11, 2001, it has become apparent how
interconnected our infrastructure is and the exposure to targeted attacks we face as a nation (Katen,
2004). With the private industry owning over 85% of our nation's critical infrastructure, it is
important for the government to create and maintain regulations which should be followed by all
agencies and private sectors in order to protect our national security. There are several concerns
about government regulation by the private sector and how it will affect their consumers privacy and
the company's finances. However, the Cybersecurity Act of 2015 ensures user's privacy while
sharing information between companies and agencies. Furthermore, there are several effects on
national security resulting from failure to comply with government regulation, meeting only the
minimum requirements and exceeding the minimum requirement. With that being said, it has

Controversial Aspects Of Government Regulation
Regulating a variety of aspects of business and society is an old and often controversial aspect of
government, particularly at the national level. Much of what the national government does, or fails
to do, has an impact on individual citizens, private corporations and other business enterprises,
agricultural producers and marketers, foreign governments, labor unions, and state and local
governments.
The first national regulatory efforts in the late 1800s were intended at punishment for, and the
prevention of, abuses in the marketplace, antitrust violations, and price gouging. During the 20th
century, government regulation became even more extensive, focusing not only on preventing
certain kinds of practices, but also requiring that certain in service standards can and should be met.
And the past 50 years, more than a dozen new regulatory agencies have been shaped at the national
and state government levels, following the route of new regulatory statutes. Regulatory measures
contact virtually every part of our lives.
Some government actions are seemingly not linked to regulating private lives, but still indeed do so.
These include local building codes and zoning laws; government housing loan programs with
minimum income requirements cut off many inferior citizens from an ability to ... Show more

and works to the disadvantage of both consumers and producers. Advocates of government

that an entirely unrestrained market will unavoidably lead to monopolistic practices, higher costs,

Government Regulation Of The United States
The government has always played a very strong role in the laws of the United States and in the
lives of people who live in this country. At times in history, the government has been too strict on its
people other times. These leaders have, however, failed to achieve a successful medium between
these two treatments. The situation is similar to this one when dealing with most everything that the
government has any type of control over. Although there are opposing sides which either argue for
strict government regulation of the diets of its people or no government regulation at all, a middle
ground should be explored and examined by the government itself regarding this topic. Nutrition in

The government seems, also, to cut off all of the things that they think are sources of the problem at
once as well. There is, and never really has been, any balance in the system of the government when
it comes to this type of issue. People come up with their own theory to make themselves feel like
they are still in the right, the government recognizes that there is a problem, so it enters the situation
without thinking out or planning for a legitimate solution to the problem; it places into and enforces
rules and regulations that are possibly too strict for the people in the nation, and so the people turn
the opposite way again. ...[W]hen this happens, the cycle just starts over and keeps repeating itself
throughout time, and this cycle does not help anyone in any way because the problem never really
finds a resolution this way (Malanga).
The view of these types of people who try to come up with and research their own theories to make
themselves feel better about continuing what they are doing are on the "no government
involvement" side of the argument about the regulation situation. The government's view on this
problem is mostly focused on trying to better the citizens who live in its designated country; this

wherever there are good or bad, proper or improper relationships between human beings. Humans
install government from their own belief that human behavior is "self–centered" therefore society
requires governing. Likewise, government oversight is needed in the economy as well as in society.
The appropriate role of government in the economy is different from a typical liberal stance.
Although the economy is an ever–changing machine that rises and falls due to no fault of its own
some feel that government regulation is needed. Without government regulation in the economy,
free market trade could set the bar for interest rates, trade tax, business monopolies, and currency
value. "...the safety of the republic lay in the autocratic strength of its government..." this quote from
Franklin Roosevelt's Commonwealth Club Address displays how the main objective for a strong
central government is to protect the people. To further protect the people of the United States, the

Abstract
This paper will discuss the proposed views on the advantages and disadvantages of government
regulations on businesses.
Government Regulations on Businesses Advantages and Disadvantages There are advantages and
disadvantages that may be associated with the regulations that government imposes on businesses. It
is best to examine the reasoning behind regulations first prior to determining the potential
advantages or disadvantages that are viewed with government regulations. Government ... Show

Examining Government Regulations Essay
Examining Government Regulations Assignment
The current government regulations I researched pertain to the clinical guidelines and the civil rights
of persons living with HIV/AIDS in Portland, Oregon. Many people living with HIV/AIDS, at some
point during their illness, find themselves in need of housing assistance and support services. Stable
housing promotes improved health, sobriety or decreased use of alcohol and illegal drugs, and, for
some, a return to paid employment and productive social activities. As the number of people living
with HIV/AIDS continues to grow in both urban and rural areas throughout the United States,
stakeholders must find new ways to address their needs to promote the health and well–being of
these individuals ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
2. Confidentiality Concerns
The need to maintain client confidentiality restricts the ways that OHOP housing coordinators and
other organizations and individuals can publicize their activities and resources.
3. Limited Staff Capacity and Knowledge
HIV Care and Treatment staff may lack familiarity with aspects of partner systems, including
affordable housing, and have limited resources and time to conduct marketing and outreach to
potential partners and planning bodies. Discrimination adds to the daily struggles faced by the
growing number of people living with HIV/AIDS in the United States – people who are
predominantly poor and disproportionately African American or Latino. Every agency's biggest
problems facing their clients involve meeting basic needs – coping with poverty, hunger, illiteracy,
inadequate medical care, lack of transportation, and homelessness. In addition to those basic needs
issues, people with HIV face a series of critical civil rights problems. Individuals living with
HIV/AIDS need to know their rights and need the resources to advocate for themselves when their
rights are threatened. They also need national legal organizations like the ACLU AIDS Project to
enforce their civil rights and civil

Threats included government regulation and mining safety, health standards and environmental
regulations. There were many citations and violation fines charged against Massey. Low prices from
foreign coal companies pose a threat. The on–going high cost of production and maintenance of
equipment is a big cost. The shift of demand to other cleaner resources such as green technologies
posed a growing threat as well. The worker conditions are also a threat because they were
potentially dangerous and there is a high rate of accidents. This caused the treat of fines and the
potential shut down of the mine.
Next I will expand on Porters Five Forces for the coal industry. The five forces include competition

Fortunately for the coal industry, threat of new entrants is moderately low due to several barriers of
entry. There is a high capital and fundamentals of the industry needed to be able to fruitfully
compete. There are substantial beginning investments in the necessary groundwork. The cost of
equipment, resources and labor are extremely high. There is a narrow quantity of natural resources
which has a restricted capacity and decreasing supply. The industry has a competitive real–estate–
intensive nature and the property for mining is highly valued and expensive. To enter you must have
knowledge and capabilities to lessen the impact on the environment and be aware of the regulations
from the law to protect the environment.
Substitute products are moderate and include natural gas and renewable energy as alternate
products. Renewable energy demand is mounting and natural gas use is rising yearly. There is also
continual research and exploration in other energy producing technologies such as wind and solar
power. Buyers have moderate to low bargaining power because the industry can pass high prices due
to the need, demand, and the limited supply of natural resources in the world. There are not
substitutes at the same price availability in large quantities at this point. This increases the need of
buyers and reduces their bargaining power. Furthermore a considerable number of the industry has
long–term contracts, which

Government Intervention and Internet Regulation
Government Intervention and Internet Regulation Internet is a global network that connects millions
of computers together and allows people to communicate and share information with each other in
an effective and easy way. It has become the most widely used means of communications of recent
times. "The number of U.S. homes with one or more personal computers increased by 16% (in
1995) to about 38 million households, up from 33 million in 1994 and 25 million in 1993" (Fox 9).

So in such circumstances, "we must have some procedures for tackling illegal content on the

(Darlington).
"It is argued that the genesis of the Internet was such that it embraced and fostered a new spirit of
freedom, openness and experimentation and that these values must remain an integral feature of the
Internet" and if any form of regulation is introduced then the whole essence of the internet will be
lost and people would not be able to access the vast resources of information that it has to offer
(Darlington). The opponents of regulation also argue that any form of internet regulation is against
the individual's rights to freedom of expression and the concept of net neutrality because in such a
scenario a person may not be able to choose the content he wants to view. However, it should be
clearly understood that society is greater than a single person and if such rights of freedom cause
harm to the values of the society as a whole, then it is perhaps the responsibility of the government
to intervene and restrict the rights given to every individual in order to maintain those values.
"There is offensive content on the internet", so this justifies the use of internet restrictions
(Darlington). Internet is filled with explicit content. There are thousands of websites that contain

Government Regulation In Brave New World
Science often sparks many debates because of its controversiality. The scientific advancements that
have occurred over the last few decades have received attention because of the funding and
regulation from the government that is required. Although some people support government
regulation of scientific advancements, others do not. Scientific advancements are the development
of the natural world and its surroundings that are meant to enhance life. Government regulation is
control by authorities to establish order. A totalitarian government is a government in which the state
has complete control and acts dictatorial. In Aldous Huxley's most widely acclaimed novel, Brave
New World, government regulation on scientific advancement is criticized ... Show more content on

Although some believe that without government regulation, embryonic stem cell research and
cloning would do more harm than help, it is actually true that scientific advancements help more
than they harm. For instance, science has improved life and made it more efficient. Huxley portrays
a dystopian world where the government strongly regulates science, and as a result the society is
stable, but at the expense of true happiness. "Lenina felt herself entitled, after this day of queerness
and horror, to a complete and absolute holiday. As soon as they got back to the rest–house, she
swallowed six half–gramme tablets of soma, lay down on her bed, and within ten minutes had
embarked for lunar eternity" (Huxley 149) Lenina is unable to cope without soma, a drug that
relieves consumers of their emotions. She will never be truly happy because of her dependence on
soma and the government's tight grip on the order of the World State. Huxley's use of satire to
emphasize the impossibility of a utopia also shows that government regulation can lead to their own
downfall because of the absence of individuality. Totalitarian government regulation is not necessary
because it only hinders the development of the society. Cloning is allowing scientists to make new

The Pros And Cons Of Government Regulations
The creation, amendment, rejection or repealing of rules can be defined as rulemaking. Rules are
utilized by numerous sections of the government following a passed statue from Congress which can
also be referred to as regulations. Regulations do not begin in the executive branch of government
where agencies developed. They are created in the Congress, where they are the factors for the
establishment of the agency involved or function of an agency. The rules start with a legislative act
of Congress. "Congress has enacted laws such as the Administrative Procedure Act, the Regulatory
Flexibility Act, the Paperwork Reduction Act, and the Unfunded Mandates Reform Act that require
some type of procedure, review, and/or analysis of draft rules by the rule making agencies
themselves or by outside parties" (COPELAND, 2008).
Federal government agencies can issue more than four thousand completed rules each year. These
cover ever agency of government. The creation and implementation of rules costs hundreds of
billions of dollars. These are not part of the federal budget process and some think these are greater
than the cost of all federal domestic discretionary spending.
A particular agency can be mandated by Congress once a statue is passed requiring that agency to
develop a specific rule/rules to concede the statute requirements. Congress delivers an authorization
to deploy the rules. This translates to Congress passing a statute and ultimately does not have the

The Coase Theorem: An Alternative to Government Regulations
The Coase Theorem: An Alternative to Government Regulations It has been said that the Coase
Theorem provides an alternative to government regulation and provision of services. The question,
however, is how does this come about? By reading the Theorem, one can see that Coase was
focused on externalities and how they are regulated (Economic, n.d.). His Theorem said, in effect,
that trade with no transaction costs will provide an outcome that is efficient, regardless of property
rights Coase, 1960). If property rights are not defined, however, Coasian bargaining can be
prevented. Private property plays a critical part in this analysis, because any kind of property must
belong to a particular person or entity before that person can use it for bargaining in a transaction
(Brown, 1973). One cannot (legally) sell what does not belong to him or her. Because this is the
case, there can be no Coasian bargaining with property that is not owned by someone (or by an
entity such as a corporation). Ownership plays a big role in how everything is handled and
regulated, but Coase's argument was generally that this ownership and bargaining could be handled
without so much government regulation. This would also stop the need for so many different
provisions of services, since people who were able to handle bargaining without transaction costs
would have a society that was more balanced (Brown, 1973; Coase, 1960). The vast majority of the
provisions that are offered today in the way of

1 Introduction
Brownfield development is the process of redevelopment on previously developed lands that are
abandoned, closed or underused (Adams, De Sousa & Tiesdell, 2010). While some brownfield can
be too contaminated, most brownfields are re–useable to create great value once cleaned up. And in
this world of scarce resources, brownfield development becomes crucial as we focus more on
sustainability and resource optimizing. While factors of rising awareness of urban sustainability
issues, presence of derelict/disused urban space and society's rising demand for 'urban lifestyle'
promotes brownfield development, the process to transfer from greenfield development to

The implementation significantly increased the percentage of brownfield development from 50% in
1995 to 60% in 1998 (Adams, 2004). This clearly shows the effectiveness of regulations on
brownfield development. However, DETR (mentioned in Adams, 2004) point out we should not be
overly positive about the apparent statistic results because they might not be 100% reflective of true
facts due to existing loopholes in the structure of the policy. Those loopholes are failure to
distinguish rural and urban brownfield development, failure to leave out conversion of good
buildings, and failure to recognize the economic effects of housing downturn (DETR as mentioned
in Adams, 2004). Generally speaking, location control does promote and increase urban brownfield
residential development. But, attention can easily be distracted (Adams, 2004). This is also
consistent with founding by Adams, De Sousa & Tiesdell (2010).
In addition, while location control gave urban brownfield residential development a base start,
permitting certain amounts of compulsory purchase of brownfield sites (Adams, De Sousa &
Tiesdell, 2010) boosted urban brownfield development. This would be another example of
government promoting brownfield development by making site assembling easier for developer.
This course of action becomes more significant as we get to section 3.

Charlie Munger once stated, "You have to know accounting. It's the language of practical business
life." This statement emphasizes that accounting has become the center of the business world. With
the world now being focused around businesses and the idea of how to make the next dollar it's
obvious that the accounting field is rapidly becoming the most influential field in the world today.
With these occurrences comes regulation, and when I say regulation I mean stiff government
regulations on how financial reporting is done. There are many theories as to why there is an
increase in accounting regulations. One is the emphasis on the accuracy of accounting period,

FASAB created four objectives to ensure the quality of financial reporting with them being:
budgetary integrity, operating performance, stewardship, and systems and controls. Budgetary
Integrity would help provide information to determine how budgetary resources had been acquired
and if that transaction was properly done through legal processes. Budgetary integrity also presents
the status of its resources and if these statuses were consistent with information on assets and
liabilities. Operating performance helps users of financial reporting evaluate the reporting entity's
service efforts, costs, and accomplishments. It also evaluates the manner in which their particular
efforts and accomplishments had been financed as well as the entity's handling of its assets and
liabilities. The third objective, stewardship, evaluates how the nation is affected by the governments
operations and investments while also assessing how the government's financial condition has
changed and how it could change in the future. The systems and controls objective basically sees if
the administrative controls are up to par to ensure accurate reporting. All of these objectives were
created by the FASAB in an effort to establish a clear sense of what they expected in an entity's
financial reporting. FASAB also created standards from which it expected

Government Regulation
Throughout history there have been many different opinions about government regulation. Some
believe the government regulates business too much others feel that the government does not do
enough. I believe the government is regulating business far too much and furthermore putting
businesses out of business and causing many workers to lose jobs. In this paper I will point out the
common problems dealing with government regulation. I will also focus on three major aspects of
government regulation which include: 1) regulation interferes with production by halting innovation
and discouraging risk taking, resulting in declining employment, 2) government over regulates by

In all of the cases of 1970 the Congress chose to regulate instead of the alternatives; court penalties
for polluters, tax penalties for employers with poor safety records, or government–funded
information programs. " If the health and safety regulators were created in response to nonexistent
crises, it is not surprising they have made little impact on morality rates."(Crickmer 1980) Sam
Peltzman, University of Chicago economist, did a cost–benefit analysis of the drug regulations that
followed the thalidomide tragedy in Europe. In his analysis he focused on the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) which is alike the older single–industry regulators and some of its problems
are typical of most health and safety regulation. He found that the new drug laws were costing far
more than the benefits achieved. In Britain more lives were being saved than in the U.S. due to the
fewer restrictions on new drugs unlike the U.S. which have conservative policies towards new
drugs. Regulation interferes with production and halts innovation and risk taking resulting in
declining employment. This is to say, because of regulation costs, the businesses do not have enough
money to invest in taking risks with new ideas and technology. This does not allow the company to
expand and hire more workers. Regulation over regulates by setting standards for every aspect of

Federal Government Regulation (FECA)
The federal government occasionally passes legislation intended to regulate the amount of
corruption that occurs during election season. However, the effects of these regulations have not at
all been collectively positive. These regulations have unfortunately encouraged the increase in
campaign contributions and spending by various nefarious influences.
In the 1970s, FECA brought forth legislation that put limits on federal campaign contributions and
spending, and that set up a system of public funding for presidential campaigns. Limits were placed
so that the only a certain amount of money could be contributed by an individual or party
organization to a candidate in a given year. However, no limits were set on the amount of nonfederal
party activity spending or independent spending by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This legislation banned soft–money contributions to national parties, but as with FECA, it allowed
entities to raise and spend unlimited amounts on candidates. 527 groups must only refrain from
coordinating with the campaign and cannot support or reject outright specific candidates. These
groups must also disclose their donors and submit to regulation by the FEC. 501(c) groups, on the
other hand, are not required to disclose their donors. They simply must spend no more than 50% of
their revenue on independent expenditures. So, well–connected politicians are still able to raise a
large amount of money via the help of special interest groups interested in buying their time. This
situation also makes it all the more difficult for challengers, as incumbents will likely already have a
large amount of money in their PAC from their previous years in office. Not only that, but if their
time in office was well–regarded by lobbyists and special interest groups, incumbents will be able to
raise more money during election season than the challenger who potentially will not bow to the
interests of those

Many people believe that government regulations are important in safeguarding individuals against
dangerous substances or situations. Amazingly, people see government as a trusted entity that gives
people's interest a priority. In fact, when individuals see government regulating and licensing
restaurants, banks, restaurants, medical doctors, daycares, physicians and other businesses, they
contend that government is striving to ensure that their products and operations are safe and there is
no risk or harm will emanate from them. Indeed, I have heard occasionally individuals arguing that
he/she would not use a cab without government inspection certification. On the other hand,
individuals normally are regarded as being incapable or compromise on their health and safety just
to achieve what they want in the sense that they can consume anything or resort to the use of any
services or products like drinks with sugars larger than 16 ounces, without serious considerations of
their health and safety. Therefore, people should be dictated on what they do or what not to do to

Parker compared different levels of regulation in developing countries and compared it to the

in developing countries, it is important governments regulate the economy to promote equality and

countries, other historical examples show once countries are developed regulation is harmful.

government regulation was defined by Grajzl & Murrell (2007) as the study of "comparative
regulatory design," a topic rarely discussed amongst academics, economists, or politicians alike.
While government regulation is discussed broadly across many different fields, rarely is it analyzed
in direct comparison to self–regulation. However, some academic papers have discussed this topic
of "comparative regulatory design": Gehrig & Jost (1995), Segerson & Miceli (1998), and Stefan's
(2003), to name a few. These articles have all taken a different perspective of analysis and in the end
concluded that self–regulation, when applied properly, can be far more effective than any form of
government regulation. In their paper titled "Quacks, Lemons, and Self–Regulation: A Welfare
Analysis," Gehrig & Jost (1995) make the observation that if the information regarding an
environmental issue is relatively simple and widespread, it may be best to leave the regulatory
powers up to the government. If, on the other hand, the science and knowledge behind the issue is
complex and limited, a self–regulatory body within the industry would be far better suited in
resolving the environmental damage. In other words, the decision regarding which political body
should be placed in charge of resolving an environmental issue should be determined by whichever
body holds the most knowledge regarding the issue. Following these guidelines, the self–regulatory

The issue of business relations with government has increasingly become a key issue of business
ethics. Some of the many questions raised are * Is it acceptable for corporations to use their
considerable power tp shape government policy? * Is the government jeopardizing its role in
protecting the public interest when politicians sit on the board of corporations?
The government has a crucial role to play in establishing the 'rules of the game' by which we judge
business ethics.

could argue that it has certain advantagesif politicians have had the experience of the business world

varying degrees of success. Nevertheless, it used to be self–regulating. But a series of financial
scandals involving once prominent companies such as Enron, WorldCom and Parmalat lead the
authorities to consider whether the accounting profession's self–regulatory oversight system was
appropriate to meet the necessary objectives. These corporate failures had shown that the self–

The only caveat is that this regulation needs to be efficient and effective. Whatever regulatory
framework is used, be it administered by the profession or government, it must give the regulator
appropriate incentives to act in the public interest. Regulators must have a clear, overarching
purpose and the ability to resist any moves towards regulation that are self–interested or motivated
by special interest groups. Serving the public interest means having regulations that achieve their
aim of being effective and efficient without imposing unnecessary costs. The benefits of the
regulation – that is, its effectiveness in protecting the public interest – must exceed its costs. The
International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) has undertaken work in this area
and has developed a series of principles for regulators. These principles hold that: The
responsibilities of the regulator should be clear and objectively stated; The regulator should be

Government Over Regulation Of The United States

  • 1. Government Over Regulation Of The United States Camille Nelson Kline Honors English 10 10 April 2017 Government Over–Regulation The United States has slowly conformed to the new ways of the Western policy of democratic socialism in order to achieve equality in the eyes of the law, but with this the necessary regulatory compliance of all citizens must be provided. If all American citizens do agree to abide by the rules implemented by the United States, the freedom that they came here for would be nonexistent, and they would no longer have the ability to truly live the infamous 'American dream'. The economy is also beginning to move away from the capitalist ways and move toward an ideology of equality among the wealth and incomes of the people, and the only apparent way to achieve ... Joseph Stiglitz, a Nobel Prize winner, Chief Economist at Roosevelt Institute, best–selling author, and a professor at Columbia University explains the problems with the current economy in the United States in his book Rewriting the Rules of the American Economy. He explains that even though the one percent of the United States population is living a prosperous life, the remaining ninety–nine percent are being hurt by this reality (Stiglitz 8). From this it can be concluded that the regulations currently being pressed upon the majority of the population are hurting more than benefitting. Capitalism is defined as "an economic and political system in which a country 's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state" (Oxford Dictionary 1). There has been a longing to find a balance between this and socialism. The laissez–faire is the commonly known economic idea of a government refraining from interfering in the free–market in order to allow the people to control their own means of production and selling of goods. This seems to be ruined by the over–regulation of the economy by the government because much of the US economic benefits rely on the free market. Also, capitalism allows for people to voluntarily take part in making their own wealth. Without this, competition among businesses would be gone and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Competitive Intensity And Government Regulations Firm's international experience, that is, the number of years a firm has been operating in the international markets plays a vital role to determine the pricing process followed by the firm (Katsikeas and Morgan, 1994). They found out that for less experienced firms, pricing issue creates less problem, whereas more experienced firms perceive pricing to be a difficult issue, although both type of firms consider pricing very important for making export decision. Cavusgil and Zou (1994) considered two aspects of industry characteristics – competitive intensity and government regulations. The result of their study perceives a positive relation between technology orientation of the industry and export price competitiveness. A market is characterized by the competition among local and international suppliers, the threat of new entrants and the bargaining power of customers (Obadia, 2013). The author concludes that for certain aspects of exporting, specifically, volume discount, credit term, and special circumstances for new product launch, exporter manipulate export prices to cope with competitive intensity and favor the importers, although they do not manipulate the price with fluctuating exchange rates. Other studies established the relation between technology and standardization. The higher the frequency of technological changes associated with an industry, the more likely the firms to use standardized products (Samiee and Roth, 1992). • 9. Regulation Of The United States Federal Government Regulation The way a society functions is strictly based on the type of culture in which they reside in. A individuals, habits, actions and personality are all shaped, by the infrastructure, rules, and regulations that they have to abide by while residing in society. It is not to say that these policies are a negative notion, but they do certainly shape your lifestyle, and your choices in many ways. By taking a look at regulation it is important to note that, our government has a huge role in the lives of its citizens it resides over. The United States Federal government has its exercise of sovereignty, in other–words, it has legal and accepted authority to regulate people's living within a certain geographic area that it has jurisdiction ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Regulation is a major activity at all levels of government. As society becomes more complex, regulations must grow and evolved to meet the demands of a developing society. Concentrating more on the role of regulation, it can be noted that it is a system that helps protect individuals from one another. So from buyers to sellers; from employee to employer; tenants to landlords, and so on. Regulations is also implemented to alleviate human suffering and promote overall welfare. For instance, aid in the form of Social Security and to Veterans, natural disaster relief, regulation of pollution and toxins, as well as temporary assistance for the unemployed. Last, and most importantly regulation is implemented to minimize and eliminate corruption and abuse of power by government agencies or officials. (Book Source) Taking into account the terms and ideologies stated above, it is easily understood why, we as individuals have decided for so many years, to abide by this social contract with our government. We gain the most benefit from this quid pro quo relationship. Administrative Law and Regulatory Agencies Since we abide by this social contract, it is important to understand how this system works for its citizens that it has jurisdiction over. Regulatory Government Regulation With the vast growth of industrialization way back in the 19 th century, concerns came on how these industries and technologies were impacting on the social, cultural and economic well–being of the people. The negative effects got overlooked with nobody to speak against them and protect livelihoods of the people. The federal government later then came up regulatory bodies to put industries on the check and see that they provide quality services and products that are not harmful to the people. Various types of regulation were set up. First, the cost in regulatory jurisdictions is quite high. Regulated markets tend to offer fewer benefits to society than free markets. Also, private sectors are self–regulating by employing independent external auditors whereas it is a general observation that lawsuits are an incentive to provision quality services by firms. Regulation reforms enshrined in the constitution monitor the legislation, executive and judicial structure of the regulatory agencies as the government seeks to create and maintain a better working environment in the society. Traditional managerial approach to governing administration is characterized by red–tape and bureaucratic one sided decision making whereas the new public management approach focuses mainly on bilateral decision–making and is compliance–oriented. Political strategies have transformed from a self–centered, corrupt inclusion in the agencies to a more open centered approach that focuses on its citizens' welfare, just as the legalistic approach focuses on maintaining reasonability in the regulation process with keen observation of the rule of ... Producer Protection, Prior Market Structure and the Effects of Government Regulation Assignment on Regulatory Economics 1/5/2012 INTRODUCTION The direct economic regulation of business by independent government commissions has a one– hundred year history on the North American continent. It is generally asserted that the purpose of such commissions is to protect consumers from exploitation by limiting the economic powers of certain firms having pervasive effects on the public interest (for example, transportation companies and public utilities). . However, the findings of the relatively few em–pirical studies of the economic effects of regulation indicate that important differences actually do exist in these effects. The ... This group would include electric utilities, natural gas pipelines, local gas distribution companies, telephone companies, etc. The second group should consist of industries having oligopolistic or competitive market structures prior to the implementation of regulation, for example, airlines, motor carriers, railroads, and water carriers. If the producer–protection hypothesis is descriptive of the fundamental effects of regulation, one would expect to find regulation having little or no effect on the first group, whereas the second group would experience substantial changes following the effective implementation of regulation. NATURAL MONOPOLY INDUSTRIES Among other things, effective monopolies are characterized by relatively high price levels, by extensive price discrimination, and by rates of return on investment exceeding those attainable if the firm operated in a competitive market structure. Thus, the producer–protection hypothesis implies that following the implementation of regulation over natural monopolies, the price level will be essentially unchanged and will be above marginal costs, price discrimination will continue to be widely practiced, and rates of return will remain above those which would exist under competition. • 21. Government Intervention Vs. Self Regulation Business Ethics: Government Intervention vs. Self–Regulation Wealth brings power and power can at times bring corruption. In today's economy where individuals are no longer the concern when it comes to wealth, the global attention is drawn to corporations who hold the majority of our wealth. This calls for us to take cetain measures that can ensure the existence of a socially responsible behavior amongst all corporations, and these measures could be introduced in many forms, quite possibly the most favorable currently being government intervention. However, government intervention is not always the best method for ensuring social responsibility and ethical behavior amongst corporations. A much better alternative is a self–regulatory economy along with a combination of freedom and transparency in order to ensure responsible behavior in corporations, in addition to an increase in efficiency and flexibility in regards to resources and innovation. The first step is to realize exactly how out of control government regulations have become. In his article at Wall Street Journal, Regulations Run Amok–And How to Fight Back, Charles Murray notes "the number of federal crimes you could commit as of 2007 (the last year they were tallied) was about 4,450, a %50 increase since just 1980." Furthermore, Murray brings to light the fact that other than a handful few, these crimes are not acts that are bad or evil in nature, and instead are labeled crimes simply because the government ... According to a national survey, "Voters are starting to realize that the regulations implemented by government are beginning to intrude more so on people's personal lives" (Thompson and Tringali, 2). The survey also said that, "A majority of both conservatives (61%) and liberals (54%) say they are both negatively impacted by regulations that tell American business which workers to hire" (Thompson and Tringali, 2). "Lawmakers and regulators construct complex cost benefit calculations to justify the rules, but they never account for the erosion of liberty inherent in each and every one" said Diane (Katz, 1). Seventy four percent of voters in the United States believe that businesses and consumers are over regulated (Thompson and Tringali, 2). "Also, majorities agree that the increasing number of regulations have created uncertainty for large and small businesses (66%), and that agencies who enforce regulations fail to consider that their decisions lead to increased prices for consumers and job losses (69%)," according to a poll (Thompson and Tringali, 2). Ironically, Barak Obama has been trying to convince and persuade voters that he does actually care about jobs (Barone, 1). A lot of Americans are putting all their attention on healthcare, which is good, but [Americans] do not need to lose sight of the people in Congress because they are the ones that created it and now Americans need to get rid of these liberals and prevent such a thing like this from happening again (Langer, 1). One of the many regulations is healthcare and that "There hardly could be a more inapt title for the Obamacare legislation than the "Patient Protection and Affordable Act"–which basically provides protection for the consumer and gives you new coverage options to help you better understand the Obamacare implemented by Congress (Katz, 1). • 29. New Government Regulations Should Be Implemented New government regulations geared towards curbing over–packaging in today's businesses should be implemented, to prevent and increase the focus on the negative environmental impacts businesses cause as a result of disposable products and packaging. If businesses where to make the change from disposable resources to reusable resources, then businesses would be able to significantly reduce their costs and their environmental footprint. In essence, businesses who are concerned with reducing costs and being environmentally conscious shouldn't need to worry about the implementation of government regulations. Because, if the government were to implement regulations on the use of disposable materials, then businesses would see a financial benefit from the switch to reusable materials. Furthermore, if these policies had efforts aimed toward curbing over– packaging it would significantly increase the world's abilities to maintain a substantial living environment in the future. Keeping the future in mind, the need for these kinds of regulations will only continue to grow, because as time passes the amount of packages sent out from companies is exponentially growing. The change from disposable packaging and resources to reusable packaging and resources in businesses would help them to both decrease overall costs and to decrease their environmental impact. In hospitals this fact remains especially true, according to Reiner Grimmond (2012), "Annually, we estimate US hospitals dispose of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Globalisation and Government Regulation in Uk Introduction ‘Think global ', ‘Act local ' is a common phrase used by executives, companies in the UK have been heavily impacted by globalisation due to the benefits of attractive cheap labour available overseas, establish subsidiaries to overcome exportation, producing globally standardised products to achieve economies of scale and gaining a market share in local/region of a country. This is the age of globalisation, a term which has numerous definition (Dunning, 1997), but generally refers to a process of "tighter international linkages on a world–wide scale" (De Wit and Meyer, 1998). On the other hand, UK has also become a major host country for foreign multinational investment. Corporate interests shed light on market share–hold ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Traditional manufacturing countries mainly situated in the South–east Asia and Eastern Europe have gained corporate interests in attractive cheap labour (Meffert and Bloch, 1991). The loss of jobs contributes to the already worsening problem of unemployment and harms regional economy. A BBC report (Davis, 2003) shows that "Factory production fell by 4% in 2002, the largest annual slump since 1991" Corporate Insolvencies has occurred because companies are unable to keep up with global integration. MG Rover went into administration on April 8, with the loss of over 5,000 jobs (Harwood, 2005) Similar threats are also emitted from the service industry where there seems to be a trend towards outsourcing services to low labour cost countries e.g. call–centres to India. Such business voyage is encouraging as BT 's turnover increased by 11 percent in 2002 (Turner and Gardiner, 2007). Again the argument is about job loss; in addition, the pressure to out–source may cause businesses to drive down ‘real pay ' levels in order to compete more effectively (Blackwood, 2006). On the other hand, foreign investments have also created jobs in the UK. The amount of opportunities created depends on • Direct jobs: size of the foreign owned industry and the intensity of its production process. • In direct jobs: referring to the connections with local suppliers and their reputation. • 41. The Importance Of Government Regulations Government regulation is important to society. A protection to both society and the citizens, criminal law allows for government intervention on the daily issues of the country (Saunders and Bromwich, 2016, p. 15). Regulations purposes listed here are just a few: Protecting the environment, regulating the marketplace, and regulating individuals (Saunders and Bromwich, 2016, p. 16–25). The government is concerned with the amount of damage caused by human beings to earth. Water supplies are being damaged through agricultural by–products, industries are spewing chemicals in the air, water, and ground, and the disposal of waste in our lands and water (Saunders and Bromwich, 2016, p. 16). The government regulates the destruction of earth by creating ways to incentivize and protect the environment (Saunders and Bromwich, 2016, p. 16). In the marketplace, rich businesses cause white collar crimes. Fraud, scams, or misleading advertisements are regulated by the government through criminal law (Saunders and Bromwich, 2016, p. 20–21). Furthermore, the government is obligated to regulate the individuals within society (Saunders and Bromwich, 2016, p. 23–25). Crime happens because of human greed and corruption, and the government needs to set down rules to prevent and protect the law abiding citizens. There will be three types of government regulations that will be addressed. The first method of government regulation is taxes (Saunders and Bromwich, 2016, p. 27). By ... There are many different issues regarding internet regulation. Should Internet users be responsible for controlling how they use the Internet? Since the internet has been introduced to Americans there have been many debates on how involved the Government should be in regulating topics such as violent games, gambling, and sexual content. The Internet is a very useful source for many things. It has almost become a way of life for some people It has faded out things such as post offices, shopping malls and even telephones to some extent. So since it has become such an asset in peoples lives then should there be laws to prevent chaos on the Internet? People ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So what should the Government do? The Government has power to control who can gamble and who can purchace certain items at a casino or store but how can the government possibly stop a teenager from doing this online? It needs to be up to the parent to control how their child uses the Internet. Another issue is video games on the internet. There are a lot of violent video games now days, most of which you have to be eighteen to purchase. There are also a lot of violent video games on the Internet that you have to be eighteen to play but all you have to do is check the little box that says yes I am eighteen or over, and who would know any different but that person? A lot of people are very adament about self–regulation. Any other kind of government regulation on the internet would be a very long process. It's not just the U.S. that has access to this tool. It is the World Wide Web, meanig it's world wide. There would need to be some sort of committee formed and it would have to consist of officials from different countries in order to have any law or regulation because the Internet does not belong to the U.S., it belongs to the world. Essay On Government Regulations The effects of Government Regulations on the Economy The U.S. economy has somewhat recovered from the recession that began in 2008, but from my recent findings I have realized that there has been an unbalance in that recovery. Investments have fallen and businesses investments have been weak. The government regulates securities markets, the environment, and even serves as a safety–net for businesses that are at risk for bankruptcy. I'm not saying that the government should not do anything to help the poor but raising minimum wage may not be the best way to go about helping the poor either. The EPA's fracking study is another example of how government regulations hamper the performance of the economy. There should be measures in place to regulate clean and efficient ways to run businesses, however, when looking at the bigger picture, I feel that the cost of running a clean and efficient operation should not take precedence over the condition of the economy and our way of life. The EPA's 5–year study on hydraulic fracturing on groundwater contamination appeared to be a beneficial plan to alleviate water contamination, but as I have found from reading through multiple articles in the class resources, there is cost when one side is benefiting from a situation. The fact that it took 5 years and $30 million dollars for the EPA to develop a risk assessment did strike me as odd. Personally, if I was being paid millions of dollars to conduct a study on water contamination, I would prolong the study for as long as I could as well. Expenses like these are not the only reason why the U.S. is in debt, but it certainly doesn't help the state of the economy either. On the other hand, even though the EPA may be costly ... • 53. The Importance Of Government Regulation On Individual Freedom Milton Freidman and Rose Freidman were two economists who met in Chicago, were married in 1938, and continued their careers together as economists. The two of them firmly held the belief that any government regulation was an infringement on individual freedom. Freidman and Freidman's minor thesis is that the government in a free society should be entirely limited to the following areas: enforcing law and order, preventing coercion of one individual by another, enforcing legally binding contracts and rights of private property owners, and providing resources for the defense and the monetary system. They construct their assertion of government regulation being an infringement on individual rights by generously providing a multitude of arguments in favor of their political view. They commence by first stating that economic freedom, the freedom consumers possess to buy and sell whatever they so choose, is a "component of freedom properly understood," (p. 220) and therefore to alter it is to place a curb on freedom. For example, if the government comes to a decision to pass a law placing a quota on a manufactured good that consumers would have the aspiration to purchase but are incapable of procuring enough money to purchase said product because its price has been altered to become prohibitive, the freedom of the individual is henceforth imposed upon. Similarly, if the government forces people to use the government–provided postal service, then my freedom to set up a competitive business in competition with the government service is curtailed. I only partially agree with this political view. The government should actively attempt to interfere as little as possible, but not to the extent Freidman and Freidman argue. Countries should have a free market but also set price caps to forestall price gouging like during Hurricane Irma. In order to protect the people, the people themselves have to sacrifice a certain amount of freedom. It is up to the people to decide how much. For example, if we gave up every shred up freedom to the government and the government protected us by never allowing us the privilege of exiting our homes, a dramatic reduction in murders and robberies would take place, but we would not ... As Australia is a free country and a democracy, we as citizens own the right for free speech and if a group of people are feeling mistreated they can raise their concerns. Such groups like hospitality and retail workers who depend on incentives from business such as penalty rates, have voiced their concerns over possible future legislations cutting back Sunday penalty rates to regular Saturday penalty rates (Gareth , H 2015). According to Anna Pha (2016) Nurses and retail workers alike rely on such things as penalty rates in order for them to just pay their rent. The recent standing on penalty rates by the government has sent a ripple of panic through the communities of those receiving and counting on penalty. Interviews on the "The Prime Minister's gearing up to fight the election on industrial relations but a crucial penalty rates decision could land in the middle of his campaign ABC NEWS SA" placed both the society in which are in favour of keeping penalty rates and those business owners who are lobbying for them to be abolished supporting the productivity commission's findings (Sydney Morning Herald 2015). • 65. Government Regulation By The Private Sector Essay Introduction Today, our nation is under constant attack by hackers, terrorist groups and other enemies. Unfortunately regardless of how innovative our government or private sectors have become with securing the network systems, the frequency and intensity of the attacks have only increased. Over the last decade, security breaches and cyber–attacks have highlighted how dependent our nation is on its critical infrastructure. It was concluded that a total of 54% of cyber–attacks targeted the US in 2013 (Watkins, n.d). Through experiences such as September 11, 2001, it has become apparent how interconnected our infrastructure is and the exposure to targeted attacks we face as a nation (Katen, 2004). With the private industry owning over 85% of our nation's critical infrastructure, it is important for the government to create and maintain regulations which should be followed by all agencies and private sectors in order to protect our national security. There are several concerns about government regulation by the private sector and how it will affect their consumers privacy and the company's finances. However, the Cybersecurity Act of 2015 ensures user's privacy while sharing information between companies and agencies. Furthermore, there are several effects on national security resulting from failure to comply with government regulation, meeting only the minimum requirements and exceeding the minimum requirement. • 69. Controversial Aspects Of Government Regulation Regulating a variety of aspects of business and society is an old and often controversial aspect of government, particularly at the national level. Much of what the national government does, or fails to do, has an impact on individual citizens, private corporations and other business enterprises, agricultural producers and marketers, foreign governments, labor unions, and state and local governments. The first national regulatory efforts in the late 1800s were intended at punishment for, and the prevention of, abuses in the marketplace, antitrust violations, and price gouging. During the 20th century, government regulation became even more extensive, focusing not only on preventing certain kinds of practices, but also requiring that certain in service standards can and should be met. And the past 50 years, more than a dozen new regulatory agencies have been shaped at the national and state government levels, following the route of new regulatory statutes. Regulatory measures contact virtually every part of our lives. Some government actions are seemingly not linked to regulating private lives, but still indeed do so. The situation is similar to this one when dealing with most everything that the government has any type of control over. • 77. Government Regulation And Its Effect On Society Essay The world is a complex and intricate machine, with many pieces to create a much larger thing. Government and society are simply pieces of the same machine that depend on each other. Likewise, government and society have the option to liberate or limit the activities of men and it is a necessary occurrence of life. Government is dependent on society because social behaviors exists wherever there are good or bad, proper or improper relationships between human beings. Humans install government from their own belief that human behavior is "self–centered" therefore society requires governing. Likewise, government oversight is needed in the economy as well as in society. The appropriate role of government in the economy is different from a typical liberal stance. Although the economy is an ever–changing machine that rises and falls due to no fault of its own some feel that government regulation is needed. Without government regulation in the economy, free market trade could set the bar for interest rates, trade tax, business monopolies, and currency value. "...the safety of the republic lay in the autocratic strength of its government..." this quote from Franklin Roosevelt's Commonwealth Club Address displays how the main objective for a strong central government is to protect the people. Stable housing promotes improved health, sobriety or decreased use of alcohol and illegal drugs, and, for some, a return to paid employment and productive social activities. "Lenina felt herself entitled, after this day of queerness and horror, to a complete and absolute holiday. As soon as they got back to the rest–house, she swallowed six half–gramme tablets of soma, lay down on her bed, and within ten minutes had embarked for lunar eternity" (Huxley 149) Lenina is unable to cope without soma, a drug that relieves consumers of their emotions. • 101. The Pros And Cons Of Government Regulations The creation, amendment, rejection or repealing of rules can be defined as rulemaking. Rules are utilized by numerous sections of the government following a passed statue from Congress which can also be referred to as regulations. Regulations do not begin in the executive branch of government where agencies developed. They are created in the Congress, where they are the factors for the establishment of the agency involved or function of an agency. The rules start with a legislative act of Congress. "Congress has enacted laws such as the Administrative Procedure Act, the Regulatory Flexibility Act, the Paperwork Reduction Act, and the Unfunded Mandates Reform Act that require some type of procedure, review, and/or analysis of draft rules by the rule making agencies themselves or by outside parties" (COPELAND, 2008). Federal government agencies can issue more than four thousand completed rules each year. These cover ever agency of government. The creation and implementation of rules costs hundreds of billions of dollars. These are not part of the federal budget process and some think these are greater than the cost of all federal domestic discretionary spending. A particular agency can be mandated by Congress once a statue is passed requiring that agency to develop a specific rule/rules to concede the statute requirements. The Coase Theorem: An Alternative to Government Regulations The Coase Theorem: An Alternative to Government Regulations It has been said that the Coase Theorem provides an alternative to government regulation and provision of services. The question, however, is how does this come about? By reading the Theorem, one can see that Coase was focused on externalities and how they are regulated (Economic, n.d.). His Theorem said, in effect, that trade with no transaction costs will provide an outcome that is efficient, regardless of property rights Coase, 1960). If property rights are not defined, however, Coasian bargaining can be prevented. Private property plays a critical part in this analysis, because any kind of property must belong to a particular person or entity before that person can use it for bargaining in a transaction (Brown, 1973). One cannot (legally) sell what does not belong to him or her. Because this is the case, there can be no Coasian bargaining with property that is not owned by someone (or by an entity such as a corporation). Ownership plays a big role in how everything is handled and regulated, but Coase's argument was generally that this ownership and bargaining could be handled without so much government regulation. This would also stop the need for so many different provisions of services, since people who were able to handle bargaining without transaction costs would have a society that was more balanced (Brown, 1973; Coase, 1960). And in this world of scarce resources, brownfield development becomes crucial as we focus more on sustainability and resource optimizing. However, DETR (mentioned in Adams, 2004) point out we should not be overly positive about the apparent statistic results because they might not be 100% reflective of true facts due to existing loopholes in the structure of the policy. Those loopholes are failure to distinguish rural and urban brownfield development, failure to leave out conversion of good buildings, and failure to recognize the economic effects of housing downturn (DETR as mentioned in Adams, 2004). • 137. Government Regulation Essay During the process of industrialization in the United States, the government decided to increase regulation of businesses, trade, and the economy overall. In his Address to the Nation on Labor Day, President Richard Nixon placed "some temporary restrictions on our economic freedom in order to create new jobs, to stop the rise in the cost of living, to protect the American dollar." During the process of industrialization, these regulations were necessary to ensure growth and sustainability. However, now that the U.S. has a sustainable economy and has finished the process of industrialization, heavy government regulation will hinder progress rather than promote it. Historical examples from other countries prove regulation is needed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Parker compared different levels of regulation in developing countries and compared it to the economic output in those countries. The results of this study concluded there is "a strong causal link between regulatory quality and economic performance." Regulatory quality refers to the type and amount of regulations imposed by the government in the developing country. This study shows that in developing countries, it is important governments regulate the economy to promote equality and sustainable growth while limiting corruption. Although regulation is beneficial in developing countries, other historical examples show once countries are developed regulation is harmful. One of the best examples of a country struggling with economic growth and regulation is China. Qing–hua Wang of the Beijing University Institute of Economics and Management conducted a study which looked at 16 districts and counties in Beijing from 2009 to 2014, to evaluate the impacts of new government regulations on businesses which intended to benefit the environment. The results of the study showed, "...the Beijing environmental regulation played a significant role in economic development." Analysis of the study suggested increasing economic or environmental regulation hinders economic growth due to making the affected companies and industries comparatively more expensive which leads to a loss in profit. • 141. Allocating Lawmaking Powers: Self-Regulation Vs Government... Environmental issues can be difficult to resolve. With many different sources and countless resulting effects, it can be a challenge to pinpoint the best solution to fix the issue. Once it has been brought to the attention of decision makers, one must choose a perspective from which they will analyze the problem. Will they look at it from an anthropocentric point of view, in which first & foremost, people's interests are taken into account? Or will they analyze it from an ecocentric perspective in which the current state and developing future of the environment is the first priority? Once this has been decided, they must then choose who will manage the process of resolving the issue. This leads to my topic for this paper which will be discussed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... government regulation was defined by Grajzl & Murrell (2007) as the study of "comparative regulatory design," a topic rarely discussed amongst academics, economists, or politicians alike. While government regulation is discussed broadly across many different fields, rarely is it analyzed in direct comparison to self–regulation. However, some academic papers have discussed this topic of "comparative regulatory design": Gehrig & Jost (1995), Segerson & Miceli (1998), and Stefan's (2003), to name a few. These articles have all taken a different perspective of analysis and in the end concluded that self–regulation, when applied properly, can be far more effective than any form of government regulation. In their paper titled "Quacks, Lemons, and Self–Regulation: A Welfare Analysis," Gehrig & Jost (1995) make the observation that if the information regarding an environmental issue is relatively simple and widespread, it may be best to leave the regulatory powers up to the government. If, on the other hand, the science and knowledge behind the issue is complex and limited, a self–regulatory body within the industry would be far better suited in resolving the environmental damage. In other words, the decision regarding which political body should be placed in charge of resolving an environmental issue should be determined by whichever body holds the most knowledge regarding the issue. Following these guidelines, the self–regulatory bodies should ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 145. Government, Regulation & Business Ethics Government, Regulation & Business Ethics The issue of business relations with government has increasingly become a key issue of business ethics. Some of the many questions raised are * Is it acceptable for corporations to use their considerable power tp shape government policy? * Is the government jeopardizing its role in protecting the public interest when politicians sit on the board of corporations? The government has a crucial role to play in establishing the 'rules of the game' by which we judge business ethics. When we talk about the government, we know that the government is involved in issuing laws related to business practices. Business ethics tend to begin where the law ends. This means that the governments establish ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He, as the owner of Italy's 3 major television stations and largest publishing house, has been able tovirtually dominate the meida and thereby, marginalize any criticism of his government. The ethics of occupying a dual role in business & ethics is somewhat questionable. On one hand, one could argue that it has certain advantagesif politicians have had the experience of the business world and vice versa. On the other hand, there are also quite significant ethical problems linked to the close amalgamation of business and politics. Eg. German ex–chancellor Gerhard Schroeder was criticized for taking up an appointment as Chair of the Germa–Russian company, in charge of the new gas pipeling through the Baltic Sea. This deal was negotiated in th final months of his term in office. It makes obvious the problems that can arise when we have politcians who are entitled to set the rules of the economic game also acting as players in the game. 4] State Capture by Business – direct payment of bribes to govt officials by businesses. Where it is intended to 'buy' an influence on regulation, we refer to it a "state capture." 5] Ethical issues in context of privatization & deregulation An issue of extensive debate has been the price at which formerly public companies should be sold to private owners. For eg. When Deutsche Telekom was privatized, the share price immediately sank dramatically. Another ex is of the group that took over British Rail in a management buyout and ... • 149. Auditing Self Regulation and Government Regulation Over the years the accounting profession has been subject to various forms of oversight with varying degrees of success. Nevertheless, it used to be self–regulating. But a series of financial scandals involving once prominent companies such as Enron, WorldCom and Parmalat lead the authorities to consider whether the accounting profession's self–regulatory oversight system was appropriate to meet the necessary objectives. These corporate failures had shown that the self– regulatory system did not produce credible results and "had the potential to undermine investor confidence in the integrity of the securities markets" (The Treasury, 2006). As a consequence a number of countries have reviewed their arrangements for independent oversight of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The only caveat is that this regulation needs to be efficient and effective. Whatever regulatory framework is used, be it administered by the profession or government, it must give the regulator appropriate incentives to act in the public interest. Regulators must have a clear, overarching purpose and the ability to resist any moves towards regulation that are self–interested or motivated by special interest groups. Serving the public interest means having regulations that achieve their aim of being effective and efficient without imposing unnecessary costs. The benefits of the regulation – that is, its effectiveness in protecting the public interest – must exceed its costs. The International Organization of Securities Commissions (IOSCO) has undertaken work in this area and has developed a series of principles for regulators. These principles hold that: The responsibilities of the regulator should be clear and objectively stated; The regulator should be operationally independent and accountable in the exercise of its functions and powers; The regulator should have adequate powers, proper resources and the capacity to perform its functions and exercise its powers; The regulator should adopt clear and consistent regulatory processes; and The staff of the regulator should observe the highest professional standards, including appropriate ...
