Throughout the entire world, music is one thing that is a constant. From Africa to Antarctica, music
can be found. There are literally millions of types of music out there: Rock, Rap, Pop, EMO, Hard–
core, Ska, Latin, Classical. The list goes on and on. But one form of music has had one of the most
significant histories of them all: Punk rock. A look into the history of this type of music will help us
understand why punk rock sounds and feels the way it does. It is necessary to look at the types of

Slam dancing has been popular through the history of punk. You may have heard of called

some isn't. Bob Mould of Husker Du talks about politics quite frequently in his songs. I don't write
about politics because I'm not an expert. Some bands find it very necessary to claim they're
politically relevant when in actuality they don't know *censored* about politics. Not informing
people is much better than misinforming people. We're sort of like reporters in a way. Reporters of
our own mental state. Reporters of the state of the air. Consciousness. Of the day. We make personal

This generation of British youth who embraced punk left school to enter a climate of harsh
unemployment and limited options. Britain in 1975 had one of its highest unemployment rates since
World War II and this bleak scenario offered few alternatives. Punk for the British teenager was an

When I go to the gym to exercise I always listen to music. I'll normally listen to something fast
paced, angry, or motivating. Punk rock is my go to genre for workout music. The fast tempo brings
my focus to my breath and step. Another factor in my music choice is the message punk rock
conveys to its listeners. Characteristic themes are usually perseverance through some kind of first
world oppression (ie. parents, school, judgmental society), wanting to destroy something, or just in

Punk rock is a unique and changing musical genre that was born in both England and the United
States in the late 1970s. A great music scene with a reliance on rejecting the norms of societies,

When the United Kingdom was experiencing the economic crisis, the youths started to alienate from
the formal society. The high unemployment was a critical factor in forming the punk subculture.

This report uses Heding et al. 's seven approaches to branding (2009) to investigate John Lydon 's
relevance, strengths and weaknesses as a brand. John Lydon – also known as "Johnny Rotten" – is a
singer, musician and songwriter, famous for being the lead singer of the Sex Pistols (1975–1978)
and of the Public Image Ltd (PiL) (1978–present). This report mainly focuses on Lydon 's
experience in PiL, which represents the longest part of his career compared to Sex Pistols ' relatively
short life.
Although the literature recognises that artists can produce powerful brands, the separation between
art and business has partly obscured the potential developments of branding studies in the context of
the cultural industries (Schroeder, 2006, 1291–1292). Considered the pioneer of the Punk–Rock
movement and one of the most influential and controversial musicians of all times, Lydon represents
an interesting case study to offer new insights in the applicability of branding theories to artists.
The main body of this report contains seven chapters, one for each of the seven approaches

The Sex Pistols embodied the anger and restless ambition. The Ramones, The Clash, The Dead
Kennedys and the other punk bands of the late 1960s were all making their political claims. As time
went on, there have always been punk bands to carry the torch. In recent years, bands like Angelic
Upstarts, Drop Kick Murphy, Flogging Molly and Anti–flag have all had political messages. There
is no shrinking to the sidelines to croon love songs and high school graduation themes. That

hints at the concept of subclasses and super classes. For example, the genre "rock and roll" could be
the super class of "punk rock," because Rock and Roll is a fairly broad category of music and punk
rock is a more specific type or flavor of rock; thus showing how punk rock is a subclass of Rock and
Roll. Punk Rock is a category within a category of music. Rock and Roll demonstrates how a genre
can evolve from being relatively specific to generally broad as time progresses and new music is
introduced over the years. With the superclass of Rock and Roll at the top of the hierarchy, under it

Julien Temple's documentary, The Filth and the Fury portrays the Sex Pistols as a rebellious band
who generated from the hardships the working class faced in England after the Second World War.
Such hardships included jobs being very difficult to get, especially for working class teenagers who
were looking for their first job. (Anarchy, 123) As a result, "everyone was on the dole." (Temple
Chap 1) The working class had little hope was believed by many drawing the conclusion that they
didn't "stand a chance." Essentually, if you weren't born into riches you were doomed. These

After the demise of many hardcore bands in the mid–Eighties, bands such as Bad Religion kept the
scene going, and were influences towards punk bands that would later go on to much mainstream
success such as Green Day, The Offspring, and Blink–182. One specific moment in punk rock
history that deals specifically with women, as well as issues of sex and gender, is the development
of the Riot Grrrl movement in the early 1990's. This movement came mostly out of the punk rock

and throughout various different nations, many disgruntled youth and those tired with an unfair
system have flocked to the then burgeoning culture, allowing for it to grow exponentially into

Kurt was an artistic child since the beginning, he would constantly draw and sing and play on a
small drum set. At age eight Kurt became more hateful toward all people because he felt that he
didn't fit in anywhere, and that feeling only amplified when his parents divorced. "I remember
feeling ashamed, for some reason, ashamed of my parents" Kurt explained in a 1993 Guitar World
interview. Divorce wasn't a common thing at the time, people just didn't split so Kurt felt that he
couldn't even face some of his friends at school anymore. He so desperately wanted the typical

What is punk rock? How many people know the real definition? Punk rocks values, attitude, and
ideologies? Punk rock isn't just a style or a scene but a way of life. It all started in the late 1970s,
originating from the working class angst and frustrations many youth were feeling about the
economic inequality. One of punks' main oppositions was rejection of mainstream, corporate mass
culture and its values. It continued to evolve its ideology of anti–racist and anti–sexist belief systems
as the movement spread from its origins in England and New York to Northern America. The
attitude common in the subculture is the resistance to selling out, which means abandoning one's
values and changing in musical style toward pop to embrace anything that's mainstream capitalist
culture in the exchange for money, status, or power. Punk rocks' common thinking wasn't only anti–
authoritarism, and not selling out but also non–conformity, direct action, and a DIY ethic. The DIY

In the 70s and 80s punk music emerged. It was a style that was derived from rock music, and
similarly to rock, it defied hierarchies. However, punk rock defied hierarchies in a more extremist
level than how rock did it, it promoted anarchy, which means that it was against any type of
government (Davies 1–2), Most people can probably recognize the Sex Pistols, the Clash, and the
Ramones, as the most popular bands. The Sex Pistols only lasted three years as a band and recorded
only one album, but they are the ones that caused a bigger impact, since they were the
personification of punk rock. For example, the Sex Pistols protested against the Queen of England in
many of their songs. In the 90s punk evolved into other styles, such as alternative and grunge, that
still hold liberal ideals but not as extremist as punk rock. In the 00s and present society musicians
