• The term ‘ethics’ comes from the
Greek word ‘ethos’, which means
‘custom habits’.

3. Ethics involves (3 major areas of study)
systematizing
defending and
recommending concepts of right and wrong conduct

5. Ethics in research
is essential to curtail the misconduct in
research such as
scientific fraud
fabrication of data
plagiarism and so on

6. Research involves
either human or animal experimentation
medical and science studies
many funding agencies insist ‘ethical committee
clearance’ as mandatory to sanction the funding
projects.

7. Composition of ‘Institutional Ethics Committee’’
Today most of the institution has ‘institutional ethics
committee’ separately for human and animals.
Generally this committee will have 9 members.
For human experimentation the composition of the
members is as follows.
•Chairperson (1)
•Basic Medical Scientists (2)
•Clinicians (2)
•Legal expert (1)
•Philosopher/Ethicist/Theologian (1)
•Lay person from the community (1)
•Member Secretary (1)4/10/2017 7Kalidasan - ACAS
8. Member secretary - Faculty member of the Institution
Other members - outside the Institution (including the
chairperson)
Generally the Institution nominates the member secretary, by
an institution level committee after reviewing the research
credentials of the faculty available.
Once member secretary is nominated, he has to suggest
panel of experts, to the head of the institution, for his/her
final call.

Process of getting ‘Institutional Ethical Committee’ clearance
The faculty members / scholars who want to get ethical
committee clearance for their research have to submit 10 copies of
prescribed filled-in application along with their proposal and
prescribed fees to the member secretary.
Some institutions may also ask for soft copies of the application.
10. 4/10/2017 Kalidasan - ACAS 10
The member secretary will periodically conduct the
institutional ethics committee meeting, where all the
investigators will be asked to present their proposal separately
to the committee and also to elaborate the ethical part involved
in their research.
At the end of their presentation, committee may ask certain
question if needed, or it may also give suggestion, if required.
11. 4/10/2017 11Kalidasan - ACAS
In case of human experimentation written
concerned form through the subject (in English or in
regional language) is to be submitted to the committee.
After analyzing the proposal and presentation, the
committee will give its clearance or other-wise.
The member secretary will issue the ‘Institutional
ethics committee’ clearance certificate to the
investigator of the project.

Common ethical issues in human experimentation research
The common ethical issues in human experimentation research focus
much on the subjects selected for the research.
The researcher has to provide wide range of information for obtaining
clearance certificate.
•The procedure adopted during the research, the risk involved to the
subject, and precaution measures taken have to be elaborated.
•An assurance is to be given that the subjects used are participated
voluntary and they have been given an option to withdraw at any point of
time.
•Similarly vulnerable individuals such as children, people with mental
illness, differently-abled and so on need to be handled with at most care
while using them as the subject.
14. 4/10/2017 14Kalidasan - ACAS
•Whether any payment or incentives are made to the subject is to
be highlighted.
•Whether a copy of written consent from subject in the prescribed
format has been obtained is to be declared.
•The health and safety of the subjects has to be given priority in
human experimentation.
•The cultural, social, gender based characteristics of research
participants has to be taken care of.
•The researcher should always maintain the confidentiality of data,
and should be used appropriately in the research documentation.

Conclusion
Most of the medical colleges and leading higher
education institutions in India have ‘Institutional ethics
committee’ which plays vital role in enhancing the
quality of research.
The idea of this paper is to emphasis that all Colleges
and University must have ‘Institutional ethics
committee’ for betterment of research.
