Interior design is a course of action which makes the life of the people
better, happy and full of energy. Every person wants to see beautiful spaces, good
facilities and surrounding. I have chosen this profession because I want to plan
the design of living. I manage the work of turning my ideas into a reality. I need to
design a space that is practical for its purpose as well as visually pleasing.
I Rishabh Mathur have done Two year Bachelor in Interior Design and
Two years experience of studies, I have learnt many parameters to design a
house and to fulfill the client's requirements.
nd
While pursuing my 1st year and 2 Year of interior designing, I learned
about the history of architecture, in this I got to know about the Neolithic Period ,
Paleolithic Period i.e. Stone Age Period, I also learned about the Indus Valley
Civilization, The planned cities of Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa.
The elements are, point i.e. starting point to draw any object, line – without
line we cannot draw any kind of object, each line express it's feeling and every
linehas its different feeling, Horizontal line, vertical line, diagonal line,
perpendicular line, deep curve, soft curve. Form shape and space i.e. shape is
2D, form is 3D and space is the area which is required by the shape. The principle
of design are Balance, proportion, rhythm, emphasize and unity.
The modern movement (1920-1950) played an important role in design
industry with the designer like Walter Gropius, le-Corbusier, Louis Kahn, frank
Lloyd Wright. There contribution lead to meticulously design houses with proper
planning and consideration to function. Louis Kahn's works are considered as
monumental beyond modernism. He came up with the idea of design
development of interior spaces focusing more on served and servant spaces. He
believed that served areas should be placed near the servant areas, so that the
functionality of human space increases, example, the living room having served
area as kitchen and toilet. This concept of his has been popular till today.
In the aspects of the building construction I learned about the brick bonds,
that can be arrange in the variety of patterns. There are English bonds, Flemish
bond, stretching bond, heading bond & with different pointing between them; like
v-shape, struck etc. Brick is considered good for construction as it is a part of
sustainable design and absorb less heat. There are special made bricks & adobe
Introduction
2
bricks through which houses can be made. These days' fly ash bricks and
concrete blocks are used for construction, which are far better option for the
environment
Cavity walls are better option for making walls, having a gap of usually 25-
30 mm. This gap is usually filled with a bad conductor like thermocol so that the
heat outside the building is not able to enter inside the house.
I also learned about the staircase, it's defined as a series of steps suitably
arranged for the purpose of connecting the floor of the buildings. It includes tread,
riser, stringers, newel post, hand rails and baluster. Type of stairs are, Straight
stair, dog legged stairs, open well, quarter turn newel, open newel stair with
quarter space landing, Circular and spiral stairs.
Doors as defined as the frame work of wood, steel, aluminum, glass. It is a
secured opening left in wall. Standard height of door would be 7 feet in height and
3 feet in width. There are Battened and ledged door, framed and paneled door, fly
proof door, Revolving door, Sliding door, swing door, and rolling steel shutter door.
Windows for opening made in the wall for the purpose of providing daylight, vision
3
and ventilation. There are fixed window, pivot window, sliding window, casement
window, glazed window.bay window, bow window, French window, Louvered
window, corner window and skylights.
I focused my attention towards daylighting and placement of windows and
doors. Proper entrance of sunlight into a room generates happiness and
placement of doors and windows with ventilator creates a better air-circulation.
Energy savings can be achieved either from the reduced use of artificial lighting or
from passive solar heating or cooling. Artificial lighting energy use can be reduced
by simply installing fewer electric lights because daylight is present.
Damp proofing is also very important in today living houses, it is due to
because due to bad design and faulty construction and use of poor quality of
materials. Dampness not only effect the life of the building adversely, but also
create unhygienic conditions for the occupantsit rising through the foundation
walling. Moisture from wet ground may rise well above ground level on account of
capillary action. we can cure it by using damp proofing course.
4
We should also cure the wood work i.e. furniture of the house by applying
anti – termite treatment on it. They have been in existence for millions of years.
They are capable of survival under most adverse condition and environments.
Dry wood termites do less damage they live in wood and do not maintain contact
with the ground. Subterranean termites on the other hand are mainly responsible
for causing damage to the buildings and its contents.
We should construct the building in such a manner that the safety of the
occupant is assured to the maximum possible extent in the event of outbreak of
fire in the building. It will danger to life of the occupants, it can be spread to other
areas and it will damage the property, So we should use the fire resisting
materials like Timber which has unique property of self insulation and slow
burning, First class bricks molded with good clay can stand exposure to fire for a
considerable length of time, Steel although incombustible has a very low fire
resistance value, Asbestos is fibrous material which is combined with Portland
cement to form a material having great fire resistance value, Plaster or Mortar is
incombustible and as such, by suitable choice of the type of mortar, The walls or
ceiling of a building can be made more fire resistance. Glass conduct heat faster
than metal, because of its low thermal conductivity, the change in volume in
account of expansion or contraction is very small as such it may be a good fire
resistance material.
5
Stone should note used in a fire resistive construction should be strictly
restricted to the minimum. Hot stone when subjected to sudden cooling develop
cracks and can lead to failure of structure.
Paint is not only used to color the wall more colorful but it is also used for
protection.
Paint is applied on Timber, Metal, Brick or other in the materials in the form
of a liquid which, on drying form a thin film to provide protection or decoration or
both.
Paint is composed of two main components i.e. Pigment and organic
binder. Pigment is the solid ingredient of the paint and is used in the form of fine
powder. Organic binder is the liquid part of the paint and it is called vehicle.
An oil paint is generally made up of six main constituents that is Base, inert filler,
Colouring Pigment, Vehicle, Thinner and Drier.
AGood paint should stick well to the surface and should be able to seal the
porous substrata. It should provide easy workability. Thickness should be
adequate for good protection and decoration of the surface, it should dry rapidly.
Paint should be withstand for longer period of time without losing gloss, it should
offer resistance to failure by checking, cracking and flaking. It should possess
good moisture resistance and it should not fade with the passage of time.
For visual applications I have used auto CAD, Google SketchUp and
3dsmax .My major focus is on space planning to generate more of space in a
small space or a large space paying attention to the behavior of human being. You
can have a detailed report of the residential design designed by me in the
subsequent pages.

Case Study
Plan a residential layout for Mr. X who is on a higher post of the
government.
There are 4 members in the family, his wife and two children. The family
loves socializing and meeting people. They want a bungalow or a house which is
more open with beautiful landscape is around the house. The family's main
preference is a terrace garden which should be a cozy sitout in the house. The
family is having good life style and is in the upper class living.
The space given for the site is 500 yards = 4500 sq. feet.

Day Lighting is used for entering natural light into the room. It helps to keep
the room fresh, kills all the germs and make the person more active.
in my design I have provided 2 window of size 4' in breadth and 5'6” in height with
1'8” of fanlight, and one fixed window in South direction of size 2' in breadth and
6'6” in height. It provide enough amount of sunlight in the entering into the room.
Day Lighting
10
Ventilation
Ventilation is one of the most important part in the building structure and
essential for living.
It circulate the air in the room and make the house more refreshing
Ventilation is used to control temperature, replenish oxygen, or remove moisture,
odors, smoke, heat, dust, airborne bacteria, and carbon dioxide. Ventilation is
used to remove unpleasant smells and excessive moisture, introduce outside air,
to keep interior building air circulating, and to prevent stagnation of the interior air.
It happens due to “ Stack Effect “ when the cool air enter and present hot air
move upward and moved out from the ventilators.
The red arrows in the above picture shows the movement of air in the house.
11
Gestalt Principle
Gestalt effects is in the form of generating capability of out sense. It helps in
visual recognition of figure and whole form instead of just a collection of simple
lines and curve.
The law of similarity states that elements within an assortment of objects
are perceptually grouped together if they are similar to each other. This similarity
can occur in the form of shape, colour, shading or other qualities..
Law of Similarity has been followed in my plan. On both the sides, Design of
the Bed, side table and study table is same.

Industrial Visit
Industrial visit from Dezyne Ecole College, Last year in 2012 we went to
Jaipur visit to ‘Mangalam Builders' and saw how all construction has been done
while complex construction. I learn about the false ceiling, Fly Ash Bricks etc and
the next visit is to Jaipur Central Mall in that I learn about the pillars, cavity walls,
Bricks and ash fly bricks, ventilation, Air condition system, line and dead load
learn about green Building and that was the first gold certify building and the most
interesting thing that is saw and learn post – tensioning method in that the wires
are apply inside the beams and it helps in to decrease the weight of the building
and because of this it can increase the height of the building.
And in 2013 we went to Jaipur again for attending the “ The Indian Stone Mart
2013” it was 7th international stone industry exhibition, their I learnt and got to see
different types of stones form different part of world. And recently we visit the
“Forhex Fair” their I saw the different types of furniture, lights and other artifacts to
design and decorate the home better for living.

Boundary Wall Design
(Detail Drawing)
On the top of the boundary wall, I
have fixed iron angles inbuilt into the
masonry 4" depth.the height of the
angle is 2'2" above the boundary the
boundary wall. The iron angle jut out
from the boundary wall straight up
on which holes have been created
so that wooden strips of (w x t) 2" x
1" thick can be screwed up on these
iron angles.These iron angles are
spaced at a distance of 4'.

Indian Mela
Mela once upon a time used to be a community affair-most awaited by the
whole village folks. Where youth mingled, women shopped, children enjoy, mela
set the ground for modern day mall culture. For the women folk, mela would be the
only time when they were allowed to setup out of their houses for shopping and
the colorful bangle were always a must buy. Mela is a perfect place for all kinds of
shopping.

My Design
I am supposed to design a space that is vibrant active and full of energy and
at the same time maintenance friendly because it's a room for children of age
group 12-14. To design this space I have to keep in mind the colors of Indian mela
from where I have resorted to by mixing sunflower yellor, poster red, energising
orange. It is hugely attractive, positive and full of zing. It is a colour of warmth and
cheerfulness and also it is a light reflective color. I have tried to use this color along
with the color of dark brown which is a neutral tone and with another colour black
as of metal iron. It was a great challenge for me to devise various textures for the
children's study room to be used on the wall so as to bring out the energy factor.
The choices of textures obtained by me were bricks, wood, metal like iron and
other fluffy textures to bring out the bubblyness of the child.
40
To design my children room the next step in my design development is the
formulation of the type of concept chosen by me. Concept generation can be
empirical concept where we select the concept that we observe through our
naked senses such as the color material type, texture etc. In the abstract concept
we develop a design through our feelings and mood. In my project I have selected
the empirical concept where I have resorted to the usage of my five senses eyes,
ears, skin, nose and toung and the concept of carnival
The various textures, finishes and the feel of the various surfaces, the
usage of fabrics used in my design are all dependent on the development of the
textures which I have researched and derived the concept picture of carnival
41
Space Planning means to design the furniture in such a manner that our
requirements has also been fulfill and we also get the space to move around
easily.
These plans of Children's Bedroom which you see below are the steps to
get my best plan.

  • 6. 1 Interior design is a course of action which makes the life of the people better, happy and full of energy. Every person wants to see beautiful spaces, good facilities and surrounding. I have chosen this profession because I want to plan the design of living. I manage the work of turning my ideas into a reality. I need to design a space that is practical for its purpose as well as visually pleasing. I Rishabh Mathur have done Two year Bachelor in Interior Design and Two years experience of studies, I have learnt many parameters to design a house and to fulfill the client's requirements. nd While pursuing my 1st year and 2 Year of interior designing, I learned about the history of architecture, in this I got to know about the Neolithic Period , Paleolithic Period i.e. Stone Age Period, I also learned about the Indus Valley Civilization, The planned cities of Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa. The elements are, point i.e. starting point to draw any object, line – without line we cannot draw any kind of object, each line express it's feeling and every linehas its different feeling, Horizontal line, vertical line, diagonal line, perpendicular line, deep curve, soft curve. Form shape and space i.e. shape is 2D, form is 3D and space is the area which is required by the shape. The principle of design are Balance, proportion, rhythm, emphasize and unity. The modern movement (1920-1950) played an important role in design industry with the designer like Walter Gropius, le-Corbusier, Louis Kahn, frank Lloyd Wright. There contribution lead to meticulously design houses with proper planning and consideration to function. Louis Kahn's works are considered as monumental beyond modernism. He came up with the idea of design development of interior spaces focusing more on served and servant spaces. He believed that served areas should be placed near the servant areas, so that the functionality of human space increases, example, the living room having served area as kitchen and toilet. This concept of his has been popular till today. In the aspects of the building construction I learned about the brick bonds, that can be arrange in the variety of patterns. There are English bonds, Flemish bond, stretching bond, heading bond & with different pointing between them; like v-shape, struck etc. Brick is considered good for construction as it is a part of sustainable design and absorb less heat. There are special made bricks & adobe Introduction
  • 7. 2 bricks through which houses can be made. These days' fly ash bricks and concrete blocks are used for construction, which are far better option for the environment Cavity walls are better option for making walls, having a gap of usually 25- 30 mm. This gap is usually filled with a bad conductor like thermocol so that the heat outside the building is not able to enter inside the house. I also learned about the staircase, it's defined as a series of steps suitably arranged for the purpose of connecting the floor of the buildings. It includes tread, riser, stringers, newel post, hand rails and baluster. Type of stairs are, Straight stair, dog legged stairs, open well, quarter turn newel, open newel stair with quarter space landing, Circular and spiral stairs. Doors as defined as the frame work of wood, steel, aluminum, glass. It is a secured opening left in wall. Standard height of door would be 7 feet in height and 3 feet in width. There are Battened and ledged door, framed and paneled door, fly proof door, Revolving door, Sliding door, swing door, and rolling steel shutter door. Windows for opening made in the wall for the purpose of providing daylight, vision
  • 8. 3 and ventilation. There are fixed window, pivot window, sliding window, casement window, glazed window.bay window, bow window, French window, Louvered window, corner window and skylights. I focused my attention towards daylighting and placement of windows and doors. Proper entrance of sunlight into a room generates happiness and placement of doors and windows with ventilator creates a better air-circulation. Energy savings can be achieved either from the reduced use of artificial lighting or from passive solar heating or cooling. Artificial lighting energy use can be reduced by simply installing fewer electric lights because daylight is present. Damp proofing is also very important in today living houses, it is due to because due to bad design and faulty construction and use of poor quality of materials. Dampness not only effect the life of the building adversely, but also create unhygienic conditions for the occupantsit rising through the foundation walling. Moisture from wet ground may rise well above ground level on account of capillary action. we can cure it by using damp proofing course.
  • 9. 4 We should also cure the wood work i.e. furniture of the house by applying anti – termite treatment on it. They have been in existence for millions of years. They are capable of survival under most adverse condition and environments. Dry wood termites do less damage they live in wood and do not maintain contact with the ground. Subterranean termites on the other hand are mainly responsible for causing damage to the buildings and its contents. We should construct the building in such a manner that the safety of the occupant is assured to the maximum possible extent in the event of outbreak of fire in the building. It will danger to life of the occupants, it can be spread to other areas and it will damage the property, So we should use the fire resisting materials like Timber which has unique property of self insulation and slow burning, First class bricks molded with good clay can stand exposure to fire for a considerable length of time, Steel although incombustible has a very low fire resistance value, Asbestos is fibrous material which is combined with Portland cement to form a material having great fire resistance value, Plaster or Mortar is incombustible and as such, by suitable choice of the type of mortar, The walls or ceiling of a building can be made more fire resistance. Glass conduct heat faster than metal, because of its low thermal conductivity, the change in volume in account of expansion or contraction is very small as such it may be a good fire resistance material.
  • 10. 5 Stone should note used in a fire resistive construction should be strictly restricted to the minimum. Hot stone when subjected to sudden cooling develop cracks and can lead to failure of structure. Paint is not only used to color the wall more colorful but it is also used for protection. Paint is applied on Timber, Metal, Brick or other in the materials in the form of a liquid which, on drying form a thin film to provide protection or decoration or both. Paint is composed of two main components i.e. Pigment and organic binder. Pigment is the solid ingredient of the paint and is used in the form of fine powder. Organic binder is the liquid part of the paint and it is called vehicle. An oil paint is generally made up of six main constituents that is Base, inert filler, Colouring Pigment, Vehicle, Thinner and Drier. AGood paint should stick well to the surface and should be able to seal the porous substrata. It should provide easy workability. Thickness should be adequate for good protection and decoration of the surface, it should dry rapidly. Paint should be withstand for longer period of time without losing gloss, it should offer resistance to failure by checking, cracking and flaking. It should possess good moisture resistance and it should not fade with the passage of time. For visual applications I have used auto CAD, Google SketchUp and 3dsmax .My major focus is on space planning to generate more of space in a small space or a large space paying attention to the behavior of human being. You can have a detailed report of the residential design designed by me in the subsequent pages.
  • 11. 6 Certified Bodies In The Design Industry There are few certified bodies which deals with Interior designing. They are as follows: ASID (AMERICAN SOCIETY OF INTERIOR DESIGNING) IIID (INDIAN INSTITUTE OF INTERIOR DESIGNING) IDC (INDIADESIGN COUNCIL) ASID is the oldest and largest professional association for interior designer. • 14. 9 Day Lighting is used for entering natural light into the room. It helps to keep the room fresh, kills all the germs and make the person more active. in my design I have provided 2 window of size 4' in breadth and 5'6” in height with 1'8” of fanlight, and one fixed window in South direction of size 2' in breadth and 6'6” in height. It provide enough amount of sunlight in the entering into the room. Day Lighting
  • 15. 10 Ventilation Ventilation is one of the most important part in the building structure and essential for living. It circulate the air in the room and make the house more refreshing Ventilation is used to control temperature, replenish oxygen, or remove moisture, odors, smoke, heat, dust, airborne bacteria, and carbon dioxide. Ventilation is used to remove unpleasant smells and excessive moisture, introduce outside air, to keep interior building air circulating, and to prevent stagnation of the interior air. It happens due to “ Stack Effect “ when the cool air enter and present hot air move upward and moved out from the ventilators. The red arrows in the above picture shows the movement of air in the house.
  • 16. 11 Gestalt Principle Gestalt effects is in the form of generating capability of out sense. It helps in visual recognition of figure and whole form instead of just a collection of simple lines and curve. The law of similarity states that elements within an assortment of objects are perceptually grouped together if they are similar to each other. This similarity can occur in the form of shape, colour, shading or other qualities.. Law of Similarity has been followed in my plan. On both the sides, Design of the Bed, side table and study table is same.
  • 17. 12 Industrial Visit Industrial visit from Dezyne Ecole College, Last year in 2012 we went to Jaipur visit to ‘Mangalam Builders' and saw how all construction has been done while complex construction. I learn about the false ceiling, Fly Ash Bricks etc and the next visit is to Jaipur Central Mall in that I learn about the pillars, cavity walls, Bricks and ash fly bricks, ventilation, Air condition system, line and dead load learn about green Building and that was the first gold certify building and the most interesting thing that is saw and learn post – tensioning method in that the wires are apply inside the beams and it helps in to decrease the weight of the building and because of this it can increase the height of the building. And in 2013 we went to Jaipur again for attending the “ The Indian Stone Mart 2013” it was 7th international stone industry exhibition, their I learnt and got to see different types of stones form different part of world. And recently we visit the “Forhex Fair” their I saw the different types of furniture, lights and other artifacts to design and decorate the home better for living.

Where youth mingled, women shopped, children enjoy, mela set the ground for modern day mall culture. For the women folk, mela would be the only time when they were allowed to setup out of their houses for shopping and the colorful bangle were always a must buy. Mela is a perfect place for all kinds of shopping.

  • 44. 39 My Design I am supposed to design a space that is vibrant active and full of energy and at the same time maintenance friendly because it's a room for children of age group 12-14. To design this space I have to keep in mind the colors of Indian mela from where I have resorted to by mixing sunflower yellor, poster red, energising orange. It is hugely attractive, positive and full of zing. It is a colour of warmth and cheerfulness and also it is a light reflective color. I have tried to use this color along with the color of dark brown which is a neutral tone and with another colour black as of metal iron. It was a great challenge for me to devise various textures for the children's study room to be used on the wall so as to bring out the energy factor. The choices of textures obtained by me were bricks, wood, metal like iron and other fluffy textures to bring out the bubblyness of the child.
  • 45. 40 To design my children room the next step in my design development is the formulation of the type of concept chosen by me. Concept generation can be empirical concept where we select the concept that we observe through our naked senses such as the color material type, texture etc. In the abstract concept we develop a design through our feelings and mood. In my project I have selected the empirical concept where I have resorted to the usage of my five senses eyes, ears, skin, nose and toung and the concept of carnival The various textures, finishes and the feel of the various surfaces, the usage of fabrics used in my design are all dependent on the development of the textures which I have researched and derived the concept picture of carnival
