QUESTION 1 – IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR
CHALLENGE FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?
After careful consideration we decided that Indie as the best genre to do our music video.
IN the first research task, we had to research real media products to analyse what
conventions were similar and how each video is different within the same genre. The
research I did consisted of four different videos from different style artists within the indie
genre – female, male and bands.
In one video, by The Last Shadow Puppets (TLSP) there were conventions which I wanted to
adapt into our own music video. The colour in this music video made me want to include a
drain of colour and make it a pale weak looking colour – this was shown in the music video
as it was set at the beach and therefore looked pale anyway, the addition to add a filter
which then drains the colour more allows the audience to focus on the video more as it is
unique and isn’t done very often. This means that I wanted to replicate the filters in our
music video as it gains the audience’s attention. One convention in the TLSP music video
that I challenged was the camera shot and the style of the shots. One camera shot that they
use repetitively in the video is long pans from scene to scene and it included scenic shots
too. When planning what I wanted to achieve for our video I decided that I would not want
long pan shots because it doesn’t allow the story to be told in the way we would like, also
we found that cutting to the beat was necessary to portray the emotion we wanted the
audience to feel. This meant that we challenged conventions when needed in order to
complete the best music video we possibly could.
Another video which I research was by Lana Del Rey, this was a good artist to review in the
indie genre as it is a different style to the other artists/bands that I studied. Lana Del Rey’s
music video portrayed a love story however the editing was to the beat to the music and
gave a feel of tension and atmosphere in self. This was a convention that we decided to
follow as it allowed the audience to interpret the story however they would like to where
as if the editing is off beat it would make the audience feel on edge. A convention that I
decided after studying all the music videos was including the artist in the storyline. We
decided to challenge this convention as we believed that the storyline can be interpreted
better with the artist separate as the audience can chose how involved they get, similarly
our music video plan is obscure and it wouldn’t work with the artist being involved in the
storyline. Another convention that all music video I studied included was youth. The
storyline and characters or artist are young. The use of young characters allows the youths
and younger generation to embrace and relate to the music video and therefore become a
fan of the artist and music. We developed this convention as we used youth within our
artist but we also managed to use it within the storyline of a young couple growing up into
an old couple. This is also relatable to audiences if they have grandparent (s).

The next thing I studied was ancillary of artists. This was to gain basic knowledge of how
different artists display their concerts and albums differently. One ancillary products I
viewed was Hozier. His most recent album was very unique and nothing recent and in the
indie genre was similar. His website compared to his album showed instant synergy
between the two products. Such as font – the font used was one basic jagged font which is
now identified to be his when the audience sees it. Not only Hozier but all artists that I
researched showed strengths of synergy including colour schemes, photos, fonts and
symbols (if artists is identifies with one: Such as Ed Sheeran with his plus + , multiply X and
divide ÷). After this research was found by all members in the team we decided to replicate
and use the same font, same colour scheme and potentially a similar or same photo within
both.
QUESTION 2 – HOW EFFECTIVE IS THE COMBINATION OF YOUR MAIN TAST
PRODUCTS AND ANCILLARY TEXTS?
Between our tour poster and digipack there were similarities which allowed synergy to be
formed. One style that we decided to do to create synergy was the photos. We decided to
use similar photos from the same shoot. We decided to this as it created a brand identity
for the artist and allows the audience to acknowledge who it is. We were also able to
include a photo of the digipack front cover on the tour poster. This was a great piece of
synergy between the two products as it makes the link between the artist and the tour
poster. Within the tour poster and digipack we also decided to use the same colour
scheme, since the photos used were from the same shoot, the Mise En Scene was the
same, the setting was the woods and therefore the colour scheme was green and brown.
This fits with the indie genre as its open to the public to interpret however they like.
Our main product and ancillary tasks also share synergy. The main tasks includes a large
performance aspect of the artist in the woods, this is synergy with both ancillary tasks as
the performance aspect in the main task is the same location as the shoot for the ancillary
therefore there is instant synergy as they are all connected. The issue we had with synergy
between the main task and ancillary products is that it can only be relatable to that one
song unless we include a woods performance aspect in all music videos with in the album.
QUESTION THREE – WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT FROM YOUR AUDIENCE
FEEDBACK?
Positive feedback that we got given was about a good variation of shots and how we used
rule of thirds to explain the narrative to the audience and allow them to engage with the
storyline. Another point that the audience enjoyed viewing was the editing of the shots and
how we cut to the beat, they complimented this as they were able to see the difference
between the different scenes as they were able to understand what was occurring. Another

comment we got on our main tasks was the editing stage of the process. The audience said
that they liked the use of colour and filters we used in order to explain to the audience
what happened without it actually being explained. The audience said they liked the way
that each colour was used for each part of the life: orange when youth, blue when old man
was alone and warm but gentle colours when old couple were together.
However, some constructive criticism which we were given was to make sure that the lip-
syncing was in sync. This was in rough cut 2 as we layered another performance aspect
underneath and it was lip-synced correctly and it was ahead of the song. From this as a
team we made sure that we edited it thoroughly and did several checks before publishing.
Another negative we were given was that the audience was finding it hard to understand
the storyline and wanted to recommend changing the ending or changing how we have
edited it in order for the storyline to be understood correctly. With this suggestion made,
we as a team had a discussion about how we needed to view the scenes where it was
unclear what was happening. We successfully achieved and changed all criticism that was
given to us.
QUESTION FOUR – HOW DID YOU USE MEDIA TECHNOLOGIES IN THE
CONSTRUCTION AND RESEARCH, PLANNING AND EVALUATION STAGES?
WORDPRESS
During the planning stage of our piece we used wordpress to work out what the best time
and day to publish our blogs posts to make sure that it is organised and that we as a team
understand when the due date is for each task that we do. In the production stage of our
piece we use wordpress to look at our necessary posts that we would need during filming
such as storyboards or shooting schedule. Evaluation stage of our piece, we used our
wordpress blog to review old posts and see what we can evaluate in this stage before
writing our individual draft scripts.
FINAL CUT PRO X
We didn’t use the software during the planning stage of the piece. However, in the
production stage we used the software a lot and relied on it heavily. This software allowed
us to be in control of editing and putting together our final piece, also it allows you to add
filters and transitions in order to make our work look professional. We also used the
software to create our audience feedback videos so that all the information about what is
good and bad is in one place. This software was really helpful to keep us in control and
manage our own videos. In the evaluation stage of our piece we used the software to edit
together our question 1, 2 and 3.
4. Tara Rendell – BlueSky Studios
PHOTOSHOP
We used photoshop during the planning stage when we used it to get a basic
understanding of how the programme works and how to use the tools and make ancillary
drafts however because the software is available on macs only – I personally had to use
powerpoint as I didn’t have the software. In the production stage, we used the software to
make our ancillary tasks of the tour poster and the digipack. This software was easy once
we got the understanding and we managed to create the same look for both products on
different computers with different people creating it.
WEB 2.0
Web 2.0 was a very important part of all stages in the piece that we created. In the planning
stage we used a variety of different platforms. Poll daddy is a survey website and we made
a survey to get audience feedback from the audience and public. We also did lots of
research into the indie genre before the production to make sure we were planning the
correct conventions, this included a mood board where we collected suitable images to
show what our understanding of ‘indie’ is. In the production stage: we used both our social
media platforms being facebook and twitter to get the audience feedback from the rough
cuts and what we can improve on. We also put on the social media updates about the work
we were achieving. We used youtube to release our rough cuts and audience feedback
where we can easily access on our phones when out filming. We also used DaFont to find
the best font to work with our ancillary tasks and chose two out of hundreds to get the
audiences attention. In Evaluation stage of the whole process we used prezi to create our
question 4, we used youtube too, to post our question 1,2,3. This way we are able to find it
easily.
