http://bit.ly/civility-toxic
27. You seem to work in a toxic environment. Uncivil environments have a way of whi8ling away at your health and
performance — even if you’re not the target. Just working around incivility tends to take a toll. While you can’t control
your colleagues, make sure you take care of yourself. Fill your life with energizing supporCve people, learning
opportuniCes and meaningful work, and fun acCviCes outside of work. Exercise reduces stress and will increase your
energy. These acCons will help you bring a stronger, more vital self to work and help you become more immune to the
toxicity of incivility.
UNCIVIL WORK ENVIRONMENT (55 OR GREATER)
There’s definitely room for improvement. Working around incivility pulls people off track, and limits your — and the
organizaCon’s — potenCal. Be mindful of the toll. Are there ways for you to avoid uncivil colleagues? You might reduce
your dependence on uncivil colleagues by seeking advice, informaCon, and support from others. Look for ways to thrive
in other ways — inside and outside the workplace. Mindfulness and meditaCon pracCces should enhance focus,
parCcularly when dealing with the emoCons and stress that stems from incivility. Exercise may also help. Build
relaConships with energizing and supporCve people. Be a role model. Are there ways to encourage your colleagues to be
civil and foster a more posiCve environment?
MODERATELY UNCIVIL WORK ENVIRONMENT (28 - 54)
Consider yourself blessed. You’re among the lucky who work in a civil work environment. Colleagues tend to be
respecOul. You may have to deal with a few jerks and bad behavior from Cme to Cme. Develop norms for civility with
colleagues and hold one another accountable for them. Thank colleagues for their kindness, contribuCons and posiCve
behaviors. Civility pays. It increases your and others' performance and well-being.
