Reflective Practice in Teaching Essay
Reflective Practice in the context of teaching ESOL
Reflective practice engages practitioners in a continuous cycle of self–observation and
self–evaluation in order to understand their own actions and the reactions they prompt in themselves
and in learners (Brookfield, 1995; Thiel, 1999). Reflective practice is considered as an evolving
concept which views learning as "an active process of reviewing an experience of practice in order to
describe, analyse, evaluate and so inform learning about practice." (Reid, B 1993 cited in Garfat, T.
2005).
In my opinion, implementing reflective practice approach to professional development in order to
expand our knowledge is a challenge. This challenge involves teacher's ability to "reflect on...show

By talking to colleagues about what happened in the classroom, not only may we find solutions to
problems but also share and broaden our teaching experience. (Brookfield, 1995; p.31–36). 2. The
Reflective Cycle by Gibbs (1988) Gibbs Reflective Cycle (1988) encourages a clear description of
the situation, analysis of feelings, evaluation of the experience, and analysis to make sense of the
experience to examine what you would do if the situation arose again.
This straightforward and therefore useful cycle appeals to me in several aspects. An incident is
identified and thought about to provide a description of what happened. The abstract aspects of the
situation – the emotional dimension – are taken into account and reflected upon. This has to be done
because if I can stand back from what happened and identify how I felt then those feelings can be
evaluated. In the light of reflection I could see how perhaps extremes of emotion affected my
outlook and thus actions. Was there anything positive that could be carried forward into the future
or negative that needs to be addressed? Is it possible to find the cause of these positive and negative
aspects that I might examine later? This analysis allows me to break down the incident into smaller
parts that made up the situation. The question I ask myself is: What were the issues, key factors and
influences and how did they combine to bring about the incident? Once I have this deeper
understanding drawn

Reflective Assignment
Assignment Reflective Essay
The aim of this reflective essay is to evaluate my professional development whilst undertaking the
role of the Developing Intra–Operative Practitioner/ Advanced Scrub Practitioner (ASP). Using a
reflective model I want to see how my new role affects me as an Operating Department Practitioner
(ODP) and any legal implications it has for me as an employee.
For this assignment I have decided to use the Gibbs (1988) date model of reflection and will base
the assignment on prevention of Surgical Site Infection (SSI) in relation to the operative procedure
of a total hip replacement. The Perioperative Care Collaborative (PCC) defines the ASP role "as the
role undertaken by a registered perioperative practitioner...show more content...
Fig. 1) Gibbs' Model of Reflection. (BCU, 2005)
My practical competencies have been obtained through working with a general and orthopaedic
surgeon. Whilst working with my clinical supervisor, (a consultant orthopaedic surgeon) we
decided it would be beneficial to review orthopaedic wound infections. I chose to concentrate on
wound infections during a Total Hip Replacement (THR). Wound infections is a massive subject so
I have selected specific areas to look at, which are: * Skin Preparations.
* Draping.
Surgical site infections (SSI) occur in 2 – 5% of 'clean' non–abdominal surgical procedures
(Rothrock, 2007). Staphylococcus epidermidis is the most common cause for SSI in Orthopaedic
surgery (NICE, 2008). Guidelines were produced by the National Institute for Health and Clinical
Excellence (NICE) to try and reduce this infection rate and include a preoperative phase, (including
hair removal and antibiotic prophylaxis), an intra–operative phase and postoperative phase.
The majority of SSIs become apparent within 30 days of an operative procedure and most often
between the 5th and 10th postoperative days. However, where a prosthetic implant is used, SSI
affecting the deeper tissues may occur many years after the initial operation.
SSI are measured by definitions from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) or the
Surgical Site Infection Surveillance Service, other valid measures based on clinical signs and

Reflective Literature Review
This essay will review the literature to critically explore the value and purpose of reflective practice.
There has been a rapid increase in the ides of critical reflective practice over the last few decades,
(Gould, 2004). Before we look at the value and purpose of reflective practice, it is important to take
in account 'reflective practice' carries multiple meanings from the idea of professionals engaging in
self–analysis to that of engaging in critical dialogue with others. For example, with reference to
teacher education, Larrivee, (2000) argues that reflective practice is fusing together personal beliefs
and values into a professional identity whereby critical reflection can take place without staying
trapped in unexamined assumptions and expectations of our professional practice. Therefore, from
this, it can be concluded that as a teaching professional, it is important to develop reflections on ones'
professional and pedagogic knowledge to set aspirational goals for a continuing personal and
professional development, in other words, it is a way of life.
Schon (1983), identifies two types of reflection; reflection–on–action (after–the–event thinking) and
reflection–in–action (thinking while doing). This clearly distinguishes that reflection can occur
whilst the action is carried out as it can still benefit the situation rather than reflecting on how things
will be done differently for next time. This tool can be effective as it will allow the professional to

Reflective Poetry Essay
Reflective Poetry Essay
Composing poetry is an artistic expression; subsequently it's a way of conveying everything that
needs to be conveyed and finding importance in expressions. Through poetry words are illuminated
to form a picture, express feeling and share a thought in so few words. Putting down on paper all
the emotions going through ones head is a way of re–living and remembering the overwhelming
emotions they grapple with throughout their lives. Poet Michelle Williams states that: ".... humans
have always grappled with overwhelming emotions. Throughout history we have expressed these
emotions in many ways, such as through song, music, dance, art and poetry"
This is true because putting on paper emotions such as hurt and...show more content...
This stanza returns to the solitude of the lonely wondering cloud. However, the poet has been
changed by his imaginative experience involving the daffodils and the accompanying bay waters.
Loneliness is now a peaceful solitude. William Wordsworth describes himself as alone and lonely,
detached even from nature. Wordsworth feeling of sadness emerges from this poem.
In Conclusion, poets William Wordsworth, Percy Shelley and William Blake show how poetry
displays the importance of human ability to convey emotions and say what they feel. Therefore the
quote by poet Michelle Williams is true. In poets William Wordsworth "Preface" to Lyrical ballads,
he describes poetic process as follow:
"Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feeling: it takes its origin from emotion recollected
in tranquility.
Thus through poetry the opportunity to recreate and relive the previously experienced emotion is
conveyed.

what could be learnt and focus on something else * establishes a system of praise and constructive
criticism – rewards and improvement; grows with the organisation * Seeking feedback is important
because it gives a worker some idea of how they are working – what they are doing well and what
could be improved. * Criticism alone makes the worker feel hopeless but constructive criticism
provides information on how the worker can overcome problems and become a better worker – it
gives them solutions and makes the situation less hopeless. * Good work deserves praise but it can
allow the worker to become complacent. It should be given with information about how the worker
can build on their successes.

Reflective Essay On Science
The lesson that I'm going to focus on is really has to do with science for my first grade students. My
focus will be to help them gain and comprehend the knowledge that's needed to while we observe the
difference between the sun and the moon, the students will be exploring the difference in each of the
objects, determining which one is heavy or light. They will have a questionnaire sheet to write down
any questions that they may have. Giving the students the hands–on experiences is allowing them to
understand even though their opposites, how their still used for comparison. In addition, the students
will have to work as a team organizing the objects, labeling any events that they find and learn their
vocabulary words. This lesson plan has a mixture of a few subjects for them, like Reading, Language
Arts, Writing, and Science. This content includes the student's having to ask and answer questions
about details in a text, having to research, prompt and support their answers, remember important
details with help from their group, respond to questions from their peers, be able to write a complete
report, and get information or clarity on the details that they didn't comprehend. This lesson is
exciting and fun, the students are learning specific details about the sun and moon, how much their
related, but very different in many ways, their learning how to blend their vocabulary together to
help them read and comprehend better and demonstrate their interest in writing to

Year End Reflection Essay
Year End Reflection 2016
When I think of grade 8, I think of all the sports I play and how much I developed as a student
athlete from the beginning of the year to now.
Why sports comes to mind when I think of grade 8 is because this would be the year where I'm
transitioning from grade 8 to high school, which means I will have to start taking sports more
seriously, because in high school sports, for example, in football you have to be really good, and you
can't depend on being a "good athlete' because when you get to the next level of playing football
(high school) everyone is a good athlete, and you start to realize that being athletic will only take
you so far.
My main sport that I play is football. I started playing football when I was 11, when I started I was
pretty good. I was playing at a position lots of players wanted to play, linebacker, and I didn't
really take it to my advantage because I know anything about football, but as that season went on
I started getting better at my position, but the following year, I was played at a different position
because the kids we were playing with were a year older than me, that's when I realized if I wanted
to be a good player, I had to try, and that is when I really started developing in football, the...show

I developed a lot of skills this year, coming in as a kid who didn't take his school work seriously, I
learned that school really does matter and I will need school if I want to do anything in life. This
year specifically also taught me a lot of skills that I could use in high school like time
management and being able to control myself when I have freedom in school. This year also
taught me skills I didn't know I had, like if I separate myself from my friends I could complete lots
of work without the
