The Global World Knows Pocahontas As A Fairy Tale About
The global world knows Pocahontas as a fairy tale about a Native American woman who fell in love
with an English man, John Smith. Other individuals know about the true story of Pocahontas and
how she was taken from her homeland and paraded around to show the world that "Indians" could
be tamed. But what if she never met John Smith and helped him? What would have happened to
society then? I believe that there would have still been tension between the British and the Native
Americans in the area. There would have been no truce since Pocahontas would have never been to
England. She would have never been converted to a Christian and would have stayed with her father
(or husband).
Amonute, also known as Matoaka, was a part of the Powhatan ... Show more content on

She would then be kidnapped years later by Captain Samuel Argall who needed some form of
leverage against the Native Americans. Tensions were thick between the English and the Native
Americans and Argall needed the things that Pocahontas's father had taken. He set a trap and had her
captured, sending her off to Jamestown under the care of Reverend Alexander Whitaker. Whitaker
taught her English customs and religion. It is here that she met John Rolfe and married him. This
caused a truce between the Powhatans and the colonists in Virginia. Pocahontas was then converted
to a Christian and was baptized under the name of 'Rebecca.' They had a son not too long
afterwards. The company that funded the settlement of Virginia decided to use the marriage to their
advantage and funded the Rolfe's trip back to England. Rolfe would then take Pocahontas (or
Rebecca) back to England with him where she was shown around. In the year 1617, the family was
meant to travel back to England but Pocahontas fell ill and died of an unknown disease. With the
death of Pocahontas and Powhatan, relations between the English in Virginia and the Powhatans
soon deteriorated as the Pocahontas truce fell away into shambles. These tensions would continue as
the English grew greedier for land and food from the Indians. But, because of Pocahontas, the two
different cultures lived in a form of peace with each other and other countries across the Atlantic
Ocean saw that there was a possibility

The Challenges Of King Jamestown
Jamestown faced many challenges along the way and even from the start. Spain had taken control of
the seas and the new world. England knew they needed a chunk of this new world. To accomplish
this objective, King James I sent Bartholomew Gosnold to establish the Virginia company and to
colonize new land in North America. When the 3 ships arrived off the coast of Virginia, a terrible
storm made the sailors lost in the Chesapeake bay. This lead them to find the a peninsula on the
James river where they decided to build their settlement – Jamestown.
When the colonists arrived they assumed the Natives would be friendly. They wouldn't carry their
muskets around and weren't prepared so they ended up getting attacked and killed by the Natives. At

In 1622 the indians attacked the land hungry whites leaving 347 settlers dead, including John Rolfe.
The Virginia Company issued orders for " a perpetual war without peace or truce." they wanted to

The indians were defeated in the Second Anglo–Powhatan War in 1644, the peace treaty of 1646

The Legacy Of Captain John Smith 's Life Essay
While it is impossible to truly elaborate or even go into much detail on the exploits of Captain John
Smith's life, in this paper I will be covering several of his many achievements. In addition, I will be
dispelling several of the popular myths in regards to his life that many modern day Americans
believe in. Some of these more modern day myths or false narratives are due to his story being
adapted and changed in order to make a children's video by Disney, while others have been debated
by historians ever since they were penned by Smith in one of his most famous works consisting of
six volumes: The Generall Historie of Virginia, New–England, and the Summer Isles.
While many cannot picture Smith in any context other than with Pocahontas, he had a very active
life before he even met her. As stated by Woolf, prior to even meeting Pocahontas Smith had been
"in an army fighting the Ottoman Turks in central Europe, during which he went through several
escapes, was seriously wounded, taken into slavery, after which he murdered his slave–master and
escaped, along with being shipwrecked twice."1 All of these exploits happened before Smith ended
up in Virginia at the Jamestown colony, and met Pocahontas, the narrative of which most Americans
are intimately familiar with or so they think.
To begin, unlike Disney's portrayal of what most people thought of as an epic romance of the ages,
Pocahontas and John Smith were never intimate with each other. In addition, while being the

John Smith And Pocahontas Relationship
Disney released the classic film "Pocahontas" on June 23, 1995 about a young girl who is a member
of the Algonquin tribe with her father being the Chief. The movie takes place near Jamestown in the
early 1600's. Pocahontas father, has arranged for her to marry a man,Kocoum, who is thought to be
the greatest warrior in the village. Pocahontas, was not too thrilled about the idea and felt like there
was something better awaiting her. Meanwhile, Captain John Smith along with Governor Ratcliffe
and other English soldiers and sailors are aboard a ship in hopes of finding riches from the New
World to bring to their home to England. One day Pocahontas is out exploring and paying a visit to
Grandmother Willow and she runs into John Smith. Both Pocahontas and John Smith are in
astonishment with each other especially since they come from two different ways of life. However,
the difference did not bother either of them. Her father, Powhatan and Governor Ratcliffe are not
fond of each other in the way that Pocahontas and John Smith were fond of each other. Ratcliffe
believes the tribe is hiding the gold they are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The relationship was generally friendly and Pocahontas was known to be a frequent visitor in
Jamestown. "She delivered messages from her father and accompanied Indians bringing food and
furs to trade for hatchets and trinkets." As all good things must eventually come to an end, the
friendliness amongst them did. "The necessary trading still continued, but the hostilities became
more open". In January of 1609, things turned sour when John Smith led a trading party.
Pocahontas, knowing her father had ordered for John Smith to be killed, "snuck out to the nighttime
woods to his camp and warned him of her fathers orders". He and his men escaped but John Smith
was wounded shortly after in a gunpowder explosion, leaving Pocahontas to believe he was

John Smith Pocahontas Facts
Famous for saving the life of John Smith, Pocahontas is a legend (Morenus). The real question is
"Who was Pocahontas and was she real or just a legend for kids?" Most people have heard of
Pocahontas, who was primarily linked to the English colonist through Captain John Smith
(Biography). Pocahontas, whose real name was Matoaka, was a native American who became
famous for helping English colonists new to America ("Pocahontas Facts"). Matoaka, the beautiful
and lively daughter of Powhatan (Morenus), ruler of the land that the English named Virginia, is a
name most people question because they are not familiar with it, using the nickname "Pocahontas"
instead. "Pocahontas" translates into many different things including "the playful one" or "little
wanton" (Pocahontas Myth). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The English arrived in early 1607, but Pocahontas did not meet John Smith until that May (Her
Life). The story starts off when one day while exploring the Chickahominy River, John Smith was
captured by one of Powhatan's hunting parties (Ancient Origins). Powhatan was Pocahontas' father
and also the leader of the Indian tribes. As Smith tells it, he was brought in front of Chief Powhatan
(Her Life). Two large stones were placed on the ground and Smith's head was forced upon the two
large stones and a warrior raised a club to smash in Smith's brains (Her Life). Pocahontas stepped in
and placed Smith's head in her arms and her head upon his to save him from being beaten
(Morenus). After Pocahontas saved John Smith, she then came to his side and helped him stand

How Did Pocahontas Affect Society
ich was considered her secret name, and Amonute, which was more public. Her early life was just
the start when it came to the impact she had on society. Pocahontas became a prominent figure in
the colonization process of the new world due to her civil interactions with English settlers,
specifically John Smith and John Rolfe. When most people think of Pocahontas, John Smith comes
to mind as well. John Smith first met Pocahontas when she was estimated to be ten or eleven years
old. He, at this time period, was about twenty eight years of age. That being said, there is no
evidence of any sort of romantic interaction between the two. Although the romantic factor between
them is often thought of due to their portrayal in movies and other ... Show more content on

Pocahontas first met John Rolfe while staying in a Virginian settlement known as, Henricus. At this
time period, the idea of intermarriage of Native Americans and English colonists was still fairly
new. That being said, John Rolfe had to pledge his proposal of marriage for Pocahontas to the
governor of Virginia. In this long letter to the governor, he discussed his undeniable love for
Pocahontas. He also claimed that by marrying her, he would be "saving her soul." Despite the fact
that Rolfe's romantic feelings toward Pocahontas are quite noticeable, her feelings towards him are
never actually mentioned. However, their wedding took place on April 5, 1614. After they became
married, they lived on a plantation in Virginia for a couple of years where their son, Thomas, was
born. The marriage of Pocahontas and John Rolfe was one of the most significant events that related
to the interactions between the Native Americans and the colonists. It created feelings of peace and
tranquility between the two vastly different groups of people. It also helped establish trade and
commerce among them. Before the wedding occurred, the first Anglo–Powhatan War was in
process, and the marriage helped put an end to the fighting. Furthermore, the marriage to Rolfe
converted Pocahontas to the religion of Christianity. This act of conversion was immensely
important to officials back in England because it accomplished one of their primary goals of

Pocahontas Thesis
Remember that Disney movie of an American Indian tribe member with the long, flowy hair? If so,
that might have been Pocahontas. Pocahontas was the beautiful daughter of the Powhatan leader,
who the English named Virginia. Her story was truly amazing. I chose this topic because of the
curiosity of who this beautiful lady really was, and what journeys in life she had overcome. This
topic was brought up in Social Studies class as we were doing centers. One of the centers was only
about her, and I have been curious ever since. Who was Pocahontas, you say? Well, I wondered the
same thing. She was apart of the Powhatan Tribe. Being in that tribe, her father was the leader of it.
Her real name was Matoaka, which meant "little snow feather." As Pocahontas grew into a juvenile,
she received the name Pocahontas, which meant "the naughty one" or "spoiled child." Pocahontas
had a beautiful life until the English colonists had arrived. They held her captive for a while. As they

life until then. Rebecca died by getting sick, but it's not proven on what she had to die. In the text it
states "Rolfe, his young wife, and their son set off for Virginia in March of 1617, but "Rebecca" had
to be taken off the ship at Gravesend. She died there on March 21, 1617, at the age of 21. She was
buried at Gravesend, but the grave was destroyed in a reconstruction of the church. It was only after
her death and her fame in London society that Smith found it convenient to invent the yarn that she
had rescued him." This tells me that after Pocahontas died, she gained fame from London. This leads
to me thinking and questioning myself asking did the English people accept Pocahontas for who she

Captain John Smith And The American Colonization Of North...
In the beginning of the Seventeenth Century, along the English colonization of North America,
Captain John Smith leaves the Jamestown fort to explore another area and trade with the Indians,
but he is captured. The princess Pocahontas asks her father to spare Captain Smith's life and they fall
in love for each other. When he returns to the colony, he becomes the president of Jamestown and
finds people starving, but Pocahontas brings supplies, saves them and falls in disgrace with her
people.(Lockean Liberalism and the American Revolution) When the Indians realize that the English
will not leave their country, they attack and after a bloody battle, the English trade Pocahontas and
lodge her in the fort to protect their families, and Captain Smith loses his position because he does
not agree with the arrangement. With the return of Captain Newport, Captain Smith is promoted and
sent back to England, and he asks a friend to tell Pocahontas that he drowned along the trip.
Pocahontas is civilized and baptized by the English and John Rolfe proposes and marries her.(

Not All Textbooks Recall the Events of History the Same Essay
Many people do not care for history due to the simple fact some of the readings in the textbook are
not all interesting or true. Not every textbook is the same, not every textbook has accurate
information, but most history classes require you to read and learn everything from the textbooks.
As you read this essay, you will learn how a couple of different texts discusses the finding of
Virginia and about the Indians. Each of these texts are not written in the year so there will be some
discussion on the years each was written. Just remember, not all textbooks are the same, in fact,
most of them have different facts that may not be all accurate.

In May, the establishment of Jamestown was founded. The men relied on the Indians for food. The
settlement suffered from the "starving period" without Powhatan's help. The settlers held
Pocahontas, Powhatan's daughter, hostage to gain the upper hand in 1613. While they held her
captive, she agreed to convert to Christianity and marry John Rolfe. (Norton)
In the first text, he talks about how the Indians pretty much saved the colonist from death because
they supplied the colonist with goods need for their first winter. They were then attacked in 1622 by
the colonist for the land to declare the government. (Muzzey) Bailey doesn't give praise to the
Indian's like Muzzey did for saving the colonist. He discusses how the settlers find the new land and
push the Indians aside. The Spaniards were not as successful as the English settlers at killing off the
Indians. Many Indians died from the Indian Massacre, diseases, and starvation. Due to Pocahontas
marrying John Rolfe in 1613, the colonist started peace with the Indians. (Bailey) For the third text,
the author was a little more specific with the Indian tribe name. The tribe was the Tsenacomoco, and
their weroance was Powhatan. Powhatan brother watched the colonist try to expand and convert
Indians to Christianity. The war leader set up attacks all along the James River leading to 347
colonist dead on March 22, 1622. (Norton)

John Adams Biography Essay
Pocahontas was born around 1595 to a Powhatan who was the leader of 30 Algonquian speaking
groups and kingdoms in Tidewater Virginia, which is also known as Tsenacommacah. At a very
young age, Pocahontas learned the way of life by learning how to seek for food and fire as well as
constructing thatched houses.
Pocahontas was mainly known for saving the life of John Smith. John Smith and his men arrived in
Virginia and ran into the Tsenacommacah Indians many times. In 1607, a Native American hunting
party captured Smith and took him back to Powhatan's home. In Smith's journal, he stated that
Pocahontas was doing everything in her power to stop the execution and even almost sacrificed her
own life to save Smith. By committing such a brave and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
John Adams was born to father, John Adams Sr. and mother, Susanna Boylston. John's father was
not only a farmer but also a Congregationalist deacon and was very involved with the town council.
John's mother was born to an outstanding family in Massachusetts, the Boylstons of Brookline.
Adams became very successful early in his life as he received a scholarship to Harvard University
and studied law after graduating in 1755. Adams was well known for his clash against the Stamp Act
of 1765 and disagreed that the Stamp Act took away the American colonists' rights to be taxed by
consent as well as tried in front of a jury. Later on in his career, Adams was asked to represent on
behalf of the British soldiers that were on trial for killing the innocent lives of five people. This
event was known as the popular Boston Massacre. In 1744, Adams was voted into the
Massachusetts Assembly and he also became one of the five people to actually serve at the First
Continental Congress. Adams was very opened about his ideas and proposed anything that he felt
was necessary for the good of our nation thus Congress authorized his resolution to the proposal that
each colony should adopt their own governments instead of having just one big government that was
in charge of all them. John Adams was also a major contributor to the development of the
Declaration of Independence along with Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Robert R.

The story of Pocahontas is one that is well known to almost everyone. Her life has been adapted into
many different films, one of the most famous being the Disney film in 1995. As the daughter of a

Pocahontas showed courage, selflessness, bravery, and the ability to give up her own self for the
better of those around her. Pocahontas was a woman that all women aspire to be like. Although she

Now this land is known as Virginia. Over one hundred settlers had arrived, including Captain John

Smith was finally brought before Powhatan. As he was in front of him, two large stones were placed

was granted to be part of the tribe and was free to leave in peace. Following this, Pocahontas
befriended John Smith and the colonists. She helped with the colony of Jamestown and visited

John Rolfe 's Letter From The Settlement Era

U.S History

John Rolfe's marriage
This primary source, John Rolfe's Letter to Thomas Dale about marrying Pocahontas, is from the
settlement era and was written in 1614. The European settlers in this era, early 1700s, wanted land
and to displace the natives not intermarrying with them. Most settlers remained separate from the
Indian society. Some settlers married Native women as a way to gain access to the native societies.
It was a way to gain an economic relationship. Indians were being forced off their land because they
had no real claim of it. Settlers would establish their towns on sites previously cleared by the
Indians. The marriage of John Rolfe and Pocahontas was a rare and unique circumstance in the
1700s. The letter to Thomas Dale is a window to a period of uncertainty between the white settlers
and the Native Indians in North America. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the importance of
this letter and its effects to the society in the time period after it was written. John Rolfe's decision to
marry Pocahontas proved to be vital at the time. John Rolfe's letter to Thomas Dale for approval on
marrying the Indian Princess Pocahontas reflects on how much society in the early 1610s depended
on such thing as intermarriage between a white man and an Indian woman to help keep peace
between the white settlers and Native Indians in North America.
In the letter, John Rolfe, seeks for the governor's approval and

Allen argues that, by emphasizing an ideal romance, attention is taken away from the true economic
motive of Smith and the colonists: attaining wealth, prosperity and progress at any cost. The
mythological romance between John Smith and Pocahontas lends a "mystique to those original
corporate executives" where it otherwise would not exist. George Orwell once wrote, "Who controls
the past controls the future." I applaud Allen for challenging the traditional narrative about this
historical figure and for giving readers a chance to look at human relations with the environment in
our present and our future. I would recommend this book because it tells you Pocahontas's story in
way that is easy to understand, and challenges what historians believe about her.

John Rolfe Research Paper
John Rolfe is an exemplary piece of history in the world today. Throughout his life, John
accomplished many great things and his actions were known by most everyone. A quick example of
his extraordinary work was the first successful cultivation of the crop tobacco. This was an export
crop in Virginia.
But to begin with, John Rolfe was born on May 6, 1585. The birthplace was a beautiful town named
Heacham, Norfolk, England. Norfolk is known to be a predominantly rural county. it is 2,074 sq mi
and has a grand population of 859,400 people. May 6, 1585 was also the same day John Rolfe was

Disney Pocahontas Myths
Disney's Pocahontas: The Myth, And The Reality
According to Disney, Pocahontas is a perfect figure, a "good Indian". According to them she was
also madly in love with John Smith. But what if I told you that she wasn't? All sorts of horrible thing
are in the Disney movie Pocahontas! This essay will outline the racism in the Disney movie
Pocahontas, and will show you truth.
In this section I will be talking about everything Disney got wrong in the Pocahontas movie. And
let's be honest there's a lot! In the Disney movie, Pocahontas was a barbie doll princess and was
perfect in every single way, and was treated like royalty, not even having to do anything. The
Powhatans version of a princess was very different from ours. She did lots of work ... Show more

In the movie, Pocahontas falls in love/gets married to John Smith. This is not true, she actually gets
married to someone named John Rolfe. I know I have already mentioned this, but I feel that this is
SO huge, that it just HAS to be mentioned again. THE WHOLE POINT OF THE MOVIE IS THAT
POCAHONTAS FINDS TRUE LOVE (John Smith), AND THAT "TRUE LOVE" SHE DID NOT
EVEN LOVE! If the point of your movie isn't even true, then why make it? My second point is that,
in the movie, Pocahontas is NEVER called by her real name! Not once! I bet you don't even know
what it is. Her real name is Matoaka. Pocahontas was just a nickname given to her by her father! My
final piece of evidence is that at the end of the movie, Pocahontas ALWAYS trusts John Smith, and
ALWAYS loves him. In reality, after she married John Rolfe, and took the name Rebecca Rolfe, and
was living happily in England, John Smith comes along to give her a visit. Pocahontas promptly
calls him a liar, and slams the door in his face. Hear that Disney? Sounds like their "love" wasn't as
perfect as you made it sound! Even the current chief of the Powhatan nation agrees! He sent this
piece of evidence in a letter to Disney. From all of this in the Disney movies, I think that Disney
cares much more about their love story part of Pocahontas then the Pocahontas story

Captain John Smith In Jamestown
The English landed in Jamestown in 1607. After suffering food shortages, Captain John Smith,
leader of the settlement from its creation to 1609, travelled into the wilderness in search of food.
After much searching, the English stumbled upon a group of Indian warriors who promptly
slaughtered the lot of them except Captain John Smith. He returned to the Powhatan city of
Werowocomoco, the city where Chief Powhatan lived, where he was sentenced to death. According
to his accounts, he was seconds from being killed when Pocahontas, a very young girl, jumped in
the way of his axe. Chief Powhatan honored her request to let John Smith live. In 1608, John Smith

Film Analysis Pocahontas Essay
Film Analysis: Pocahontas
The animated Walt Disney movie Pocahontas is based on a true life story of a young Powhatan
Indian girl named Pocahontas who falls in love with John Smith. In the making of the movie, Walt
Disney, attempts to relate to the early 17th Century historic event of Europeans settling in
Jamestown; however, Disney did not portrait the true story. Disney rewrote the story by making it a
beautifully romantic and animated love story like a Cinderella fairytale.
In the Walt Disney movie, Pocahontas and John Smith were both young adults when they first met.

arm. John Smith was a tall, handsome, clean shaved man that wore ... Show more content on

He started scouting around and began drawing maps immediately. He met Pocahontas by almost
shooting her by a water fall, and later they fell in love. He was captured later in the movie while
venturing out alone at night to meet Pocahontas. John Smith was going to be executed on top of a
rock at dawn, in front of an army of colonists who planned to rescue him. In reality, John smith was
arrested and chained in irons during the voyage over, and he was released a month after arriving to
Jamestown, Virginia. After he was set free, he did a lot of exploring and trading with the Indians.
John Smith mapped most of the Jamestown area. He was eventually captured while seeking food
along the Chickahominy River. John Smith was brought to Chief Powhatan and was sentenced to be
executed. This is when he actually met Matoaka, the real name of Pocahontas, and she rescued him
from execution. Matoake was the oldest daughter of Chief Powhatan. John Smith became good
friends with Matoake, and eventually Chief Powhatan adopted Smith as his son. (Squidoo, Inc.,

According to history, despite the fact that Pocahontas is most famous for saving the life of John
Smith, she never marries him. Smith returns to find the situation at the fort desperate. They are
running out of food and only 38 of the original 105 Colonists are alive. Smith was accused of
causing the deaths of his men. He was overthrown from his position and almost condemned to hang.

The New World, is the story when the English came to James River in Virginia in the year 1607 .
The captain leaves to John Smith to explore the region and go to speak with the king of the natives.
One day, Smith is captured by the natives and carried away with King Powhatan. He was going to
made sacrificed, when Pocahontas is put on top of him and avoid being killed. Smith is released on
condition, that the English was left of the land of the natives. At one time, the natives and the
English fought because they did not leave the land. Between Pocahontas and Smith there was a
relationship. Pocahontas went to live with the English, Smith went to England and told his friend
that two months later he said to Pocahontas that he had died. When Pocahontas finds out it becomes
very sad and time later she accepts to be baptized its new name was Rebecca. Rebecca married John
Rolfe, had a child and worked on the tobacco planting. Later the Rolfe family traveled to England

Essay about American History: Pocahontas
In sixteenth century, a lot of Indians migrated to states all over America. There were many wars
between Indians and white men at that time. A prominent figure who was among representative of
the Indians brought friendly relations with white settlers was Pocahontas. She was Powhatan Indian
woman who befriended the settlers and married John Rolfe, the Jamestown settler, Virginia. In my
opinion, Pocahontas was a compassionate little girl, a peaceful ambassador and a typical Christian
Indian woman.
Pocahontas was extremely gracious and mild girl. She helped the settlers out of famine, disease and
Indian attacks. Sometimes, she bore some foods to aid the hard–pressed settlers. I think Pocahontas

In this circumstance, Pocahontas was also known as a heroine. She broke the rule of her father when
she saved and became friends with the colonist. She was not fearful while they were able to take
advantage of her anytime. Otherwise, they could set a trap so that Pocahontas fell into it. She was
really calm and enthusiastic; she did not think about complicated affairs which might fare badly. I
admired her to be brave woman, but she'd better have a think before her decision. Because helping
people is meaningful, sometimes it is made to betray us. So I always consider before helping
someone if I do not know who they are. Eventually, Pocahontas was kind–hearted, tolerant and
open–minded Indian woman. She deserved a heroine that everyone ought to follow.
At that time, Pocahontas also symbolize a piece of peace, she blew fresh atmosphere into oppressive
space in Jamestown. She had fallen in love with John Rolfe – a successful tobacco planter in
Jamestown. In the spring of 1613, English Captain Argall took Pocahontas hostage, hoping to use
her to negotiate a permanent peace with her father. During her captivity, Pocahontas met the colonist
John Rolfe. After falling in love with each other, they married with the approval of Powhatan. The

history. The wedding began eight years of

Exploring The Life Of Pocahontas
In this paper I hope to explore the life of Pocahontas. Pocahontas is quite famous in elementary
school classrooms. This is because her story fits within the larger story of the colonization of
America. Also, her love affair with John Smith made a good Disney movie. How much of what I
know about her life comes from Hollywood, and how much of what I know about her life comes
from reality? I will examine an academic database source to find out. Pocahontas was born in 1596
to Indian chief Powhatan around the Jamestown, Virginia colony. Christopher Clausen, of American
Scholar academic journal says in his piece titled, "the familiar story of Pocahontas was mirrored by
that of a young Englishman given as a hostage to her father" about ... Show more content on

Smith said, "At the minute of my execution, she hazarded the beating out of her own brains to save
mine; and not only that, but she so prevailed with her father, that I was safely conducted to
Jamestown; where I found about eight and thirty miserable, poor, and sick creatures, to keep
possession of all those large territories of Virginia". Pocahontas would have been 11 at the time of
her intervention. These words have often been doubted by experts, but have generally been
accepted. If this is true, then Pocahontas displayed an awesome amount of selflessness, bravery, and
initiative that was far beyond her time. These are commonly known events. What is usually untold
about Pocahontas is what comes next. A few years later Powhatan sent his daughter to Jamestown as
a gift of goodwill. With this gift, relations improved drastically between the settlers and the Native
Americans. Apparently, Pocahontas was fascinated with the English people. Pocahontas may have
regarded John Smith as sort of a father figure. She also functioned as a key bridge between the
colonists and the Indians, so that the colonists could have aid in times of starvation. Smith never
married anyone, and received serious gun shot wounds in 1609. He went back to England and died
five years later. The colony of Jamestown fell into disarray and Pocahontas returned to her father.

Disney's Pocahontas is a great movie, but is it historically correct? Well the answer is both yes and
no. There are similarities between the history of it and movie, but there's also differences. Why don
't I tell you about them.
Let's talk about Disney first and foremost. In the Disney movie she is portrayed as a beautiful,
young, skinny, Indian woman. She is the only daughter of Chief Powhatan and speaks English very
well(so does the rest of the tribe). John Smith is portrayed as tall, clean shaven, and has light hair.

Capturing Pocahontas could give him the leverage he needed to change that. Argall met with
Iopassus, chief of the town of Passapatanzy and brother to the Patawomeck tribe 's chief, to help him
kidnap Pocahontas. At first, the chief declined, knowing Powhatan would punish the Patawomeck
people. Ultimately, the Patawomeck decided to cooperate with Argall; they could tell Powhatan they
acted under coercion. The trap was set. Pocahontas accompanied Iopassus and his wife to see
Captain Argall 's English ship. Iopassus ' wife then pretended to want to go aboard, a request her
husband would grant only if Pocahontas would accompany her. Pocahontas refused at first, sensing
something was not right, but finally agreed when Iopassus ' wife resorted to tears. After eating,
Pocahontas was taken to the gunner 's room to spend the night. In the morning, when the three
visitors were ready to disembark, Argall refused to allow Pocahontas to leave the ship. Iopassus and
his wife seemed surprised; Argall declared Pocahontas was being held as ransom for the return of
stolen weapons and English prisoners held by her father. Iopassus and his wife left, with a small
copper kettle and some other trinkets as a reward for their part in making Pocahontas an English

John Rolfe 's Impact On America
Period 2: John Rolfe: John Rolfe influenced America in many ways both economically and socially.
Rolfe was known as the person who first successfully cultivated tobacco as a export crop and the
first to marry a native American, Pocahontas. He was born on May 6, 1585 by his parents john Rolfe
and Dorothy mason. During the time of this birth, Tobacco had grown more and more popular. John
saw it as a great way to make business. In 1608 john aboard a ship that was set to sail to Virginia,
but the ship was crashed and had led them to be stranded from months. Later he and the other people
who were stranded build a new ship and continued their voyage to the new colonies (Virginia).
Rolfe was able to get planted tobacco seeds from the West indies that were a little different from the
native ones but easy to grow in the colonies. The seeds that he had were a little bit sweeter and not
as harsh which grabbed the interest of the Virginia company even though Spain had declared a death
penalty to anyone who was selling it to non–spains. Once he had produced enough tobacco from his
first shipment to England the price of tobacco shot sky high. John Rolfe paved the road for the
development and settlement of the New world. His success also led to be a encouragement for
others who wanted to start new business in the New World. When John Rolfe moved to Virginia he
met the daughter of Powhatan who was kidnapped by Jamestown settlers, but it never happened.

Pocahontas Was Made Famous By Many Legends And Myths
The story of Pocahontas was made famous by many legends and myths told by people across the
years, yet there is actually very little written records about her life experiences or her feelings. What
we know about her is from the colonists in Jamestown virginia that documented parts of their lives
and from captain John smith's writings.Despite being a young '"savage" indian girl, Pocahontas was
actually a smart young woman that was crucial and very significant to the foundation of the first
English settlement in Jamestown Virginia. Her interesting life even had the power to inspire Disney
to make a cartoon movie based on her story told by Captain John Smith. Pocahontas was born
around 1595 with the name Matoaka and was one of the Powhatans leaders daughters. She was
called "Pocahontas" as a nickname which meant "playful one," because of her free spirited and
playful nature. She was the daughter of Wahunsenakah, more commonly known as Powhatan.
Powhatan was a North American indian leader estimated to have ruled between 13,000 and 34,000
people and included more than 30 different tribes with their own chief. She had about 27
siblings, however, the colonists believed that she was her fathers favorite. In 1607 the English
colonists arrived in Jamestown virginia to form a colony. At first the colony is very unsuccessful and
the native americans are very weary of the new immigrants arriving in their territory. After a little

very normal thing for Powhatan Indians (the tribe that she was from) to have several different

The New World is a 2006 historical drama set in the early 1600's, as settlers come from Britain to
begin exploring and colonizing the American continents. Written and directed by American director
and writer, Terrence Malick, The New World depicts the foundation of Jamestown, the story of John
Smith, and their relationships with Pocahontas. The film stars Collin Farrell as John Smith,
Q'orianka Kilcher as Pocahontas, Christopher Plummer as Captain Newport, and Christian Bale as
John Rolfe. Produced by Sarah Green, the film received strong positive reviews for its
cinematography, score, and young 15 year old Q'orianka Kilcher's performance as Pocahontas.

This all happens in the movie, the time lapse is different though. In the movie, Smith is held hostage
for his first summer and fall in America. Throughout the warmer climate, Smith and Pocahontas
spend many days swimming, running about in fields, and doing many outdoors activities while they
fall into a deep love. In reality, it was December when Smith was seized by the Natives. Thus, about
an hour of love affairs is flawed in The New World because it would have been too cold to spend so
much time falling for each other in a scenic summer.
In the movie, Pocahontas and her tribe are shown helping the settlers survive there first winter by
bringing them food and supplies while Smith is already established as the leader. Her tribe then
proceeds to ambush the settlers through a harsh battle the following spring for not leaving the land
and Pocahontas is banned for supporting the settlers. It is an epic scene of action and dramatic
fighting that seems to last for days. The battle most likely never happened though, because not one
historian accounts for it. In fact in Alan Brinkley's text, An Unfinished Nation, it is explained that
for two years the settlers led "unrelenting assaults against the Powhatan Indians" and in the process
captured Pocahontas to hold for ransom (Brinkly 32).

Analysis Of The Movie ' The New World '
Terrence Malick out did himself once again in the the film, 'The New World'. Unlike most of his
other films, 'The New World' is a combination of a little bit of drama, history, biography and of
course romance. The movie was slow and long as it was also unpredictable and poetic.
It all started in 1607, with the arrival of 3 ships in a small town, Jamestown in Virginia. A town that
is nearby where the native Americans live. One of the ships holds a prisoner(Captain Smith) that is
sentenced to death by hanging, but is now pardoned at the moment of his death by a superior
captain. Later, Captain Smith is captured again, but this time by the native Americans and is
interrogated soon before the Chief of the native Americans decided to execute him. At the moment
of his death, one of the Chief's many children threw herself in front of Captain smith and begged her
father to spare his life. Again, he is pardoned. He lives with the native Americans for a while until
the chief decides to let him go back to Jamestown on the condition that they leave by spring. In that
time that he spent with the Native Americans, he had learned most of their ways and even
befriended some people. He also fell in love with the teenage daughter of the chief that saved his
life. So much had happened in Jamestown while he was away. As he arrives, he was voted to govern
them again and come winter, so many people died from starvation until the Chief's daughter comes

Disney’s Pocahontas: Selling Lies as the Truth Essay
"Instead of progress in depicting Native Americans, this film takes a step backwards – a very
dangerous step because it is so carefully glossed as 'authentic' and 'respectful.' " – Jacquelyn
Kilpatrick
[1] Disney's first attempt to relay the Pocahontas story was filled with blatant falsities. The
producers, who claimed to eradicate politically incorrect statements found in past films with the
highly anticipated 1995 Pocahontas, found themselves at the center of criticisms from many vocal
activist groups. Feminists, Native Americans, and religiously based Christian groups found the
movie to completely overlook the true essence and spirit of the Powhatan Indian princess. In an

This depiction of Pocahontas immediately causes the audience to view her as a fairytale character
rather than a historically prominent figure. Feminists argue that if the story were about a fictional
heroine as found in all previous Disney films, there would be less concern. However, Pocahontas
was a "real woman who lived during a pivotal time of first contact" (Kilpatrick 2). The movie
encourages children to perform similar "Wonder–woman"–like feats, rather than being a strong and
realistic woman in today's world (Rosenzweig).
[3] One of the most significant discrepancies in the movie for the feminists was the Barbie–like
figure given to Pocahontas. Not only is her chest size capable of toppling her over, but the remainder
of her physical dimensions are also completely impractical. The supervising animator of the film,
Glen Keane, worked hard hours in the studio envisioning "an animated beauty–formula for a sexy,
muscular model. The Pocahontas of the 90's makes Cinderella pale in comparison" (Rosenzweig 1).
Feminists argue that Pocahontas should have been depicted as she really appeared in the seventeenth
century. Since her death in 1617, a vast number of different images of her figure have been created
(see the "potpourri"). Yet Disney's representation is definitely the least accurate of them all.
Pocahontas certainly did not seductively slither across the Virginia forest in a tight buckskin

Disney Vs. Reality : Disney Versus Reality
Disney versus Reality When one says the name Pocahontas, the most likely image that comes to
mind is of that one Disney created nearly twenty years ago. Tall, super model body with long ebony
hair worthy of a L'Oreal commercial, in a short cocktail dress with a typical Native American theme
to it. She is eighteen and just met John Smith; a twenty one year old Englishman with golden hair
and a body of a Greek god. At least, that is what Disney's version of Pocahontas had happen, and if
he were around at the time, John Smith would wholeheartedly agree. The truth could not be any
further in the opposite direction of what the directors of Disney's Pocahontas had in mind when they
first concepted the future film that would trick the minds of many children across the United States.
To Pocahontas' and Smith's age, appearance, and personality, to the events leading up to their first
meeting and what happened afterwards, Disney took their own liberties with it and went for it.
Pocahontas is a pretty name, almost rolls off the tongue. It's a shame however, that that is not her
real name. Her actual name is really Matoaka, while Pocahontas was just a nickname for the young
daughter of Chief Powhatan, meaning the naughty one or spoiled child, which can lead to some
negative perceptions of Matoaka (Kelso). Her name is not the only misconception that Disney

The Two Identities of an American Icon
Early America was founded on the ideas of the early English colonies combined with the beliefs of
the indigenous people. Conflicts between native tribes and Europeans characterized the colonial
period and significantly impacted both the natives and the Europeans. Political strife, in addition to
economic and territorial tensions, was commonplace among the indigenous and the colonists.
Pocahontas, the princess of the local Powhatan tribe, played a pivotal role in this early contact
between European and Indigenous American cultures. She often fostered peace between the English
colonists and the Powhatans by befriending the colonists and eventually marrying one of them. As a
result of her position as an emissary and sort of "mediator" between the two groups and her
marriage, Pocahontas began to assimilate herself to European beliefs and ideologies by converting
to Christianity. The changes that occurred as a result of Pocahontas' marriage to John Rolfe and her
conversion to Christianity led to profound cultural tensions and an ambiguous juxtaposition between
her identities as a Powhatan Princess versus the Christian wife of John Rolfe.
Established on May 14, 1607, the colony of Jamestown, located near present–day Williamsburg,
Virginia, was the first permanent English settlement in North America. In contrast, the Powhatan
Empire led by Pocahontas' father, Chief

Pocahontas And Real Life
Many people believe the 1995 film, Pocahontas, to be the true story of a young Powhatan woman.
However, the story lacks facts. Pocahontas isn't even her real name. Matoaka, the real Pocahontas,
faced mush more misery than the movie showed. Mataoka's life in America, life in England, a
comparison between the movie and real life, and how fictional portrayals of real people effect
society today will show you that Disney's inaccuracies could change history. In her early life,
Matoaka was a Powhatan Indian. She was born around 1595. 12 years later, John Smith arrived on
the shore of present day Virginia. He would help create Jamestown. This settlement was very close
to the Powhatan tribe. In 1616, John Smith wrote a letter to Queen Anne stating ... Show more

Sophie Gilbert says that the "environmentalist message" was powerful and unique. The facts, sadly,
are not so positive. The movie would have still been great, even if names where changed, but would
it still have appeal? Many people, children and adults alike, grow up thinking that they know the
story of Pocahontas. A Powhatan Chief, Roy Crazy Horse, stated "It is unfortunate that this sad
story, which Euro–Americans should find embarrassing, Disney makes 'entertainment' and
perpetuates a dishonest and self–serving myth at the expense of the Powhatan Nation", although
creators of the movie may have thought that it would be harmless, people could still find offense to
Pocahontas. James Allen, who knew the history of Matoaka, decided that "turning a story like that
into something fluffy and "empowering" is just uncomfortable" and if the real history was ever
made known among the public, people would most likely agree. The history of the real Pocahontas
is unsettling. So, wouldn't it have been better if the movie hadn't been made? In the future, fiction
will merge with fact. Despite the Pocahontas being revolutionary, providing a new and unique
message, the story of Mataoka should not be warped. Mataoka's early life, life in England, a
comparison of the movie and real life, and how the movie effects real people all show that although
Pocahontas was a great movie, it also made a sad time in history seem

Early Jamestown Dbq Essay
In early Jamestown, colonists were all you would call, "inexperienced" and victims of
circumstances. Also, most sought riches and new opportunities. But at the end of their tragic fate,
400 of their men died by 1611. Why did so many colonists perish? They could not adapt, were
victims of diseases, attacks by Powhatan Indians, and poor Native American relations. Jamestown
settlers could not adjust to the new environment. The area was dry when the settlers arrived, and the
environment was in a drought. Most perished from thirst and were denied food from the seasons.
Winter and fall caused the fish to migrate, and were very limited during those times of the year.
(Doc. A) They also could not plant food, because the water supply was also scarce during those
times of the year. (Doc. A) Summer and spring were the only times available for food and hunting,
but even with the amount of food they had they could not last the winter. (Doc. D) The colonists did
not have a lot of useful jobs. (Doc. C) The men, who were sent to America were composed generally
of gentlemen and those whose professions are not fitted for survival in the ... Show more content on

The colonists' water supply was limited and became brackish. The poor location they have chosen
also added to the struggle. On an island with the tides of saltwater going in and out every day, the

limited, and most died of infection and poisoning from the river. (Sentence 2–3 taken from Doc. A)
After the colonists traded with the Native Americans, the ships of supplies of grain headed back to
England instead of staying in Jamestown to help the colonists. (Doc. D) Also during the drought in
Jamestown (when they arrived), the water supply was dangerously low and colonists died of thirst
and the food all went away and the amount of water they had available could not support the crops

The Global World Knows Pocahontas As A Fairy Tale About

  • 1. The Global World Knows Pocahontas As A Fairy Tale About The global world knows Pocahontas as a fairy tale about a Native American woman who fell in love with an English man, John Smith. Other individuals know about the true story of Pocahontas and how she was taken from her homeland and paraded around to show the world that "Indians" could be tamed. But what if she never met John Smith and helped him? What would have happened to society then? I believe that there would have still been tension between the British and the Native Americans in the area. There would have been no truce since Pocahontas would have never been to England. She would have never been converted to a Christian and would have stayed with her father (or husband). Amonute, also known as Matoaka, was a part of the Powhatan ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She would then be kidnapped years later by Captain Samuel Argall who needed some form of leverage against the Native Americans. Tensions were thick between the English and the Native Americans and Argall needed the things that Pocahontas's father had taken. He set a trap and had her captured, sending her off to Jamestown under the care of Reverend Alexander Whitaker. Whitaker taught her English customs and religion. It is here that she met John Rolfe and married him. This caused a truce between the Powhatans and the colonists in Virginia. Pocahontas was then converted to a Christian and was baptized under the name of 'Rebecca.' They had a son not too long afterwards. The company that funded the settlement of Virginia decided to use the marriage to their advantage and funded the Rolfe's trip back to England. Rolfe would then take Pocahontas (or Rebecca) back to England with him where she was shown around. In the year 1617, the family was meant to travel back to England but Pocahontas fell ill and died of an unknown disease. With the death of Pocahontas and Powhatan, relations between the English in Virginia and the Powhatans soon deteriorated as the Pocahontas truce fell away into shambles. These tensions would continue as the English grew greedier for land and food from the Indians. But, because of Pocahontas, the two different cultures lived in a form of peace with each other and other countries across the Atlantic Ocean saw that there was a possibility ... England knew they needed a chunk of this new world. To accomplish this objective, King James I sent Bartholomew Gosnold to establish the Virginia company and to colonize new land in North America. When the 3 ships arrived off the coast of Virginia, a terrible storm made the sailors lost in the Chesapeake bay. This lead them to find the a peninsula on the James river where they decided to build their settlement – Jamestown. When the colonists arrived they assumed the Natives would be friendly. They wouldn't carry their muskets around and weren't prepared so they ended up getting attacked and killed by the Natives. At ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The Legacy Of Captain John Smith 's Life Essay While it is impossible to truly elaborate or even go into much detail on the exploits of Captain John Smith's life, in this paper I will be covering several of his many achievements. In addition, I will be dispelling several of the popular myths in regards to his life that many modern day Americans believe in. Some of these more modern day myths or false narratives are due to his story being adapted and changed in order to make a children's video by Disney, while others have been debated by historians ever since they were penned by Smith in one of his most famous works consisting of six volumes: The Generall Historie of Virginia, New–England, and the Summer Isles. While many cannot picture Smith in any context other than with Pocahontas, he had a very active life before he even met her. As stated by Woolf, prior to even meeting Pocahontas Smith had been "in an army fighting the Ottoman Turks in central Europe, during which he went through several escapes, was seriously wounded, taken into slavery, after which he murdered his slave–master and escaped, along with being shipwrecked twice."1 All of these exploits happened before Smith ended up in Virginia at the Jamestown colony, and met Pocahontas, the narrative of which most Americans are intimately familiar with or so they think. To begin, unlike Disney's portrayal of what most people thought of as an epic romance of the ages, Pocahontas and John Smith were never intimate with each other. In addition, while being the ... Meanwhile, Captain John Smith along with Governor Ratcliffe and other English soldiers and sailors are aboard a ship in hopes of finding riches from the New World to bring to their home to England. One day Pocahontas is out exploring and paying a visit to Grandmother Willow and she runs into John Smith. Both Pocahontas and John Smith are in astonishment with each other especially since they come from two different ways of life. However, the difference did not bother either of them. He also claimed that by marrying her, he would be "saving her soul." Despite the fact that Rolfe's romantic feelings toward Pocahontas are quite noticeable, her feelings towards him are never actually mentioned. However, their wedding took place on April 5, 1614. After they became married, they lived on a plantation in Virginia for a couple of years where their son, Thomas, was born. The marriage of Pocahontas and John Rolfe was one of the most significant events that related to the interactions between the Native Americans and the colonists. It created feelings of peace and tranquility between the two vastly different groups of people. It also helped establish trade and commerce among them. Before the wedding occurred, the first Anglo–Powhatan War was in process, and the marriage helped put an end to the fighting. Furthermore, the marriage to Rolfe converted Pocahontas to the religion of Christianity. This act of conversion was immensely important to officials back in England because it accomplished one of their primary goals of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Pocahontas Thesis Remember that Disney movie of an American Indian tribe member with the long, flowy hair? If so, that might have been Pocahontas. Pocahontas was the beautiful daughter of the Powhatan leader, who the English named Virginia. Her story was truly amazing. I chose this topic because of the curiosity of who this beautiful lady really was, and what journeys in life she had overcome. This topic was brought up in Social Studies class as we were doing centers. One of the centers was only about her, and I have been curious ever since. Who was Pocahontas, you say? Well, I wondered the same thing. She was apart of the Powhatan Tribe. Being in that tribe, her father was the leader of it. Her real name was Matoaka, which meant "little snow feather." As Pocahontas grew into a juvenile, she received the name Pocahontas, which meant "the naughty one" or "spoiled child." Pocahontas had a beautiful life until the English colonists had arrived. They held her captive for a while. As they let her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She had to be stopped at Gravesend where she passed away at. She died there on March 21, 1617, at the age of 21. She was buried at Gravesend, but the grave was destroyed in a reconstruction of the church. It was only after her death and her fame in London society that Smith found it convenient to invent the yarn that she had rescued him." This tells me that after Pocahontas died, she gained fame from London. This leads to me thinking and questioning myself asking did the English people accept Pocahontas for who she really ... Not every textbook is the same, not every textbook has accurate information, but most history classes require you to read and learn everything from the textbooks. As you read this essay, you will learn how a couple of different texts discusses the finding of Virginia and about the Indians. Each of these texts are not written in the year so there will be some discussion on the years each was written. Just remember, not all textbooks are the same, in fact, most of them have different facts that may not be all accurate. In 1927, David S. The men relied on the Indians for food. The settlement suffered from the "starving period" without Powhatan's help. The settlers held Pocahontas, Powhatan's daughter, hostage to gain the upper hand in 1613. While they held her captive, she agreed to convert to Christianity and marry John Rolfe. (Norton) In the first text, he talks about how the Indians pretty much saved the colonist from death because they supplied the colonist with goods need for their first winter. They were then attacked in 1622 by the colonist for the land to declare the government. (Muzzey) Bailey doesn't give praise to the Indian's like Muzzey did for saving the colonist. He discusses how the settlers find the new land and push the Indians aside. The Spaniards were not as successful as the English settlers at killing off the Indians. Many Indians died from the Indian Massacre, diseases, and starvation. Due to Pocahontas marrying John Rolfe in 1613, the colonist started peace with the Indians. (Bailey) For the third text, the author was a little more specific with the Indian tribe name. The tribe was the Tsenacomoco, and their weroance was Powhatan. Powhatan brother watched the colonist try to expand and convert Indians to Christianity. The war leader set up attacks all along the James River leading to 347 colonist dead on March 22, 1622. John Adams Biography Essay Pocahontas was born around 1595 to a Powhatan who was the leader of 30 Algonquian speaking groups and kingdoms in Tidewater Virginia, which is also known as Tsenacommacah. At a very young age, Pocahontas learned the way of life by learning how to seek for food and fire as well as constructing thatched houses. Pocahontas was mainly known for saving the life of John Smith. John Smith and his men arrived in Virginia and ran into the Tsenacommacah Indians many times. In 1607, a Native American hunting party captured Smith and took him back to Powhatan's home. The leader of this hunting party was a relative of the Powhatan Chief, and Smith was brought back to Pocahontas's home in Werowocomoco. His death would come by the smashing of his head from a club held by one of the warriors of Powhatan. John Rolfe 's Letter From The Settlement Era Gibson Mundenda Prof. Simson U.S History 5 November, 2014 John Rolfe's marriage This primary source, John Rolfe's Letter to Thomas Dale about marrying Pocahontas, is from the settlement era and was written in 1614. The European settlers in this era, early 1700s, wanted land and to displace the natives not intermarrying with them. Most settlers remained separate from the Indian society. Some settlers married Native women as a way to gain access to the native societies. It was a way to gain an economic relationship. Indians were being forced off their land because they had no real claim of it. Settlers would establish their towns on sites previously cleared by the Indians. The marriage of John Rolfe and Pocahontas was a rare and unique circumstance in the 1700s. The letter to Thomas Dale is a window to a period of uncertainty between the white settlers and the Native Indians in North America. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the importance of this letter and its effects to the society in the time period after it was written. John Rolfe's decision to marry Pocahontas proved to be vital at the time. John Rolfe's letter to Thomas Dale for approval on marrying the Indian Princess Pocahontas reflects on how much society in the early 1610s depended on such thing as intermarriage between a white man and an Indian woman to help keep peace between the white settlers and Native Indians in North America. Allen argues that, by emphasizing an ideal romance, attention is taken away from the true economic motive of Smith and the colonists: attaining wealth, prosperity and progress at any cost. The mythological romance between John Smith and Pocahontas lends a "mystique to those original corporate executives" where it otherwise would not exist. George Orwell once wrote, "Who controls the past controls the future." I applaud Allen for challenging the traditional narrative about this historical figure and for giving readers a chance to look at human relations with the environment in our present and our future. THE WHOLE POINT OF THE MOVIE IS THAT POCAHONTAS FINDS TRUE LOVE (John Smith), AND THAT "TRUE LOVE" SHE DID NOT EVEN LOVE! If the point of your movie isn't even true, then why make it? My second point is that, in the movie, Pocahontas is NEVER called by her real name! Not once! I bet you don't even know what it is. Her real name is Matoaka. Pocahontas was just a nickname given to her by her father! My final piece of evidence is that at the end of the movie, Pocahontas ALWAYS trusts John Smith, and ALWAYS loves him. In reality, after she married John Rolfe, and took the name Rebecca Rolfe, and was living happily in England, John Smith comes along to give her a visit. Pocahontas promptly calls him a liar, and slams the door in his face. Hear that Disney? Sounds like their "love" wasn't as perfect as you made it sound! Even the current chief of the Powhatan nation agrees! He sent this piece of evidence in a letter to Disney. From all of this in the Disney movies, I think that Disney cares much more about their love story part of Pocahontas then the Pocahontas story ... Iopassus and his wife seemed surprised; Argall declared Pocahontas was being held as ransom for the return of stolen weapons and English prisoners held by her father. Iopassus and his wife left, with a small copper kettle and some other trinkets as a reward for their part in making Pocahontas an English prisoner. After her capture, Pocahontas was brought to Jamestown. Eventually, she was probably taken to Henrico, a small English settlement near present–day Richmond. Powhatan, informed of ... The seeds that he had were a little bit sweeter and not as harsh which grabbed the interest of the Virginia company even though Spain had declared a death penalty to anyone who was selling it to non–spains. Once he had produced enough tobacco from his first shipment to England the price of tobacco shot sky high. John Rolfe paved the road for the development and settlement of the New world. Pocahontas Was Made Famous By Many Legends And Myths The story of Pocahontas was made famous by many legends and myths told by people across the years, yet there is actually very little written records about her life experiences or her feelings. What we know about her is from the colonists in Jamestown virginia that documented parts of their lives and from captain John smith's writings.Despite being a young '"savage" indian girl, Pocahontas was actually a smart young woman that was crucial and very significant to the foundation of the first English settlement in Jamestown Virginia. Her interesting life even had the power to inspire Disney to make a cartoon movie based on her story told by Captain John Smith. Pocahontas was born around 1595 with the name Matoaka and was one of the Powhatans leaders daughters. She was called "Pocahontas" as a nickname which meant "playful one," because of her free spirited and playful nature. She was the daughter of Wahunsenakah, more commonly known as Powhatan. Powhatan was a North American indian leader estimated to have ruled between 13,000 and 34,000 people and included more than 30 different tribes with their own chief. She had about 27 siblings, however, the colonists believed that she was her fathers favorite. In 1607 the English colonists arrived in Jamestown virginia to form a colony. She was believed to be born by historians around the 1596 in Cloucester County, Virginia; but the exact date was unknown. The different names had different meanings for different times and different situations. Native Americans were often given secret names that a select few knew about. The New World: Movie Review Essay The New World Daniel Patrick 7/29/13 HIST151E31 The New World is a 2006 historical drama set in the early 1600's, as settlers come from Britain to begin exploring and colonizing the American continents. Written and directed by American director and writer, Terrence Malick, The New World depicts the foundation of Jamestown, the story of John Smith, and their relationships with Pocahontas. The film stars Collin Farrell as John Smith, Q'orianka Kilcher as Pocahontas, Christopher Plummer as Captain Newport, and Christian Bale as John Rolfe. Produced by Sarah Green, the film received strong positive reviews for its cinematography, score, and young 15 year old Q'orianka Kilcher's performance as Pocahontas. In the movie, Smith is held hostage for his first summer and fall in America. Throughout the warmer climate, Smith and Pocahontas spend many days swimming, running about in fields, and doing many outdoors activities while they fall into a deep love. In reality, it was December when Smith was seized by the Natives. Thus, about an hour of love affairs is flawed in The New World because it would have been too cold to spend so much time falling for each other in a scenic summer. In the movie, Pocahontas and her tribe are shown helping the settlers survive there first winter by bringing them food and supplies while Smith is already established as the leader. Her tribe then proceeds to ambush the settlers through a harsh battle the following spring for not leaving the land and Pocahontas is banned for supporting the settlers. It is an epic scene of action and dramatic fighting that seems to last for days. The battle most likely never happened though, because not one historian accounts for it. In fact in Alan Brinkley's text, An Unfinished Nation, it is explained that for two years the settlers led "unrelenting assaults against the Powhatan Indians" and in the process captured Pocahontas to hold for ransom (Brinkly 32). Unlike most of his other films, 'The New World' is a combination of a little bit of drama, history, biography and of course romance. The movie was slow and long as it was also unpredictable and poetic. It all started in 1607, with the arrival of 3 ships in a small town, Jamestown in Virginia. A town that is nearby where the native Americans live. One of the ships holds a prisoner(Captain Smith) that is sentenced to death by hanging, but is now pardoned at the moment of his death by a superior captain. Later, Captain Smith is captured again, but this time by the native Americans and is interrogated soon before the Chief of the native Americans decided to execute him. At the moment of his death, one of the Chief's many children threw herself in front of Captain smith and begged her father to spare his life. Again, he is pardoned. He lives with the native Americans for a while until the chief decides to let him go back to Jamestown on the condition that they leave by spring. In that time that he spent with the Native Americans, he had learned most of their ways and even befriended some people. He also fell in love with the teenage daughter of the chief that saved his life. So much had happened in Jamestown while he was away. As he arrives, he was voted to govern them again and come winter, so many people died from starvation until the Chief's daughter comes over with some food. She risks her life ... • 63. Disney’s Pocahontas: Selling Lies as the Truth Essay "Instead of progress in depicting Native Americans, this film takes a step backwards – a very dangerous step because it is so carefully glossed as 'authentic' and 'respectful.' " – Jacquelyn Kilpatrick [1] Disney's first attempt to relay the Pocahontas story was filled with blatant falsities. The producers, who claimed to eradicate politically incorrect statements found in past films with the highly anticipated 1995 Pocahontas, found themselves at the center of criticisms from many vocal activist groups. Feminists, Native Americans, and religiously based Christian groups found the movie to completely overlook the true essence and spirit of the Powhatan Indian princess. This depiction of Pocahontas immediately causes the audience to view her as a fairytale character rather than a historically prominent figure. Feminists argue that if the story were about a fictional heroine as found in all previous Disney films, there would be less concern. However, Pocahontas was a "real woman who lived during a pivotal time of first contact" (Kilpatrick 2). The movie encourages children to perform similar "Wonder–woman"–like feats, rather than being a strong and realistic woman in today's world (Rosenzweig). [3] One of the most significant discrepancies in the movie for the feminists was the Barbie–like figure given to Pocahontas. Not only is her chest size capable of toppling her over, but the remainder of her physical dimensions are also completely impractical. The supervising animator of the film, Glen Keane, worked hard hours in the studio envisioning "an animated beauty–formula for a sexy, muscular model. The Pocahontas of the 90's makes Cinderella pale in comparison" (Rosenzweig 1). Feminists argue that Pocahontas should have been depicted as she really appeared in the seventeenth century. Since her death in 1617, a vast number of different images of her figure have been created (see the "potpourri"). Yet Disney's representation is definitely the least accurate of them all. Reality : Disney Versus Reality Disney versus Reality When one says the name Pocahontas, the most likely image that comes to mind is of that one Disney created nearly twenty years ago. Tall, super model body with long ebony hair worthy of a L'Oreal commercial, in a short cocktail dress with a typical Native American theme to it. She is eighteen and just met John Smith; a twenty one year old Englishman with golden hair and a body of a Greek god. At least, that is what Disney's version of Pocahontas had happen, and if he were around at the time, John Smith would wholeheartedly agree. The truth could not be any further in the opposite direction of what the directors of Disney's Pocahontas had in mind when they first concepted the future film that would trick the minds of many children across the United States. To Pocahontas' and Smith's age, appearance, and personality, to the events leading up to their first meeting and what happened afterwards, Disney took their own liberties with it and went for it. Pocahontas is a pretty name, almost rolls off the tongue. It's a shame however, that that is not her real name. Her actual name is really Matoaka, while Pocahontas was just a nickname for the young daughter of Chief Powhatan, meaning the naughty one or spoiled child, which can lead to some negative perceptions of Matoaka (Kelso). • 73. The Two Identities Of An American Icon Carolina Mallar Dr. Pagnoni Christianity: G Period 10 December 2014 The Two Identities of an American Icon Early America was founded on the ideas of the early English colonies combined with the beliefs of the indigenous people. Conflicts between native tribes and Europeans characterized the colonial period and significantly impacted both the natives and the Europeans. Political strife, in addition to economic and territorial tensions, was commonplace among the indigenous and the colonists. Pocahontas, the princess of the local Powhatan tribe, played a pivotal role in this early contact between European and Indigenous American cultures. She often fostered peace between the English colonists and the Powhatans by befriending the colonists and eventually marrying one of them. As a result of her position as an emissary and sort of "mediator" between the two groups and her marriage, Pocahontas began to assimilate herself to European beliefs and ideologies by converting to Christianity. The changes that occurred as a result of Pocahontas' marriage to John Rolfe and her conversion to Christianity led to profound cultural tensions and an ambiguous juxtaposition between her identities as a Powhatan Princess versus the Christian wife of John Rolfe. Established on May 14, 1607, the colony of Jamestown, located near present–day Williamsburg, Virginia, was the first permanent English settlement in North America. Sophie Gilbert says that the "environmentalist message" was powerful and unique. The facts, sadly, are not so positive. The movie would have still been great, even if names where changed, but would it still have appeal? Many people, children and adults alike, grow up thinking that they know the story of Pocahontas. A Powhatan Chief, Roy Crazy Horse, stated "It is unfortunate that this sad story, which Euro–Americans should find embarrassing, Disney makes 'entertainment' and perpetuates a dishonest and self–serving myth at the expense of the Powhatan Nation", although creators of the movie may have thought that it would be harmless, people could still find offense to Pocahontas. James Allen, who knew the history of Matoaka, decided that "turning a story like that into something fluffy and "empowering" is just uncomfortable" and if the real history was ever made known among the public, people would most likely agree. The history of the real Pocahontas is unsettling. So, wouldn't it have been better if the movie hadn't been made? In the future, fiction will merge with fact.
