The Fashion Design Of Chanel
It has been over a century since Mademoiselle Chanel, determined to reform the concept of
femininity as much in style as in the essence, commissioned the chemist Ernest Beaux to develop
what will become the symbol of international perfumery. Chanel No. 5 is unquestionably the most
legendary ever made fragrance, described as an opera of olfactory art. Independent, unconventional,
and provocative, Coco Chanel transformed her unfamiliar name into an obligatory reference point
for fashion design of the twentieth. As an icon of female strength, she translates the complexity and
elegance that characterize the woman, with the creation of what would become the scent par
excellence. Her way of conceiving the perfume is peculiar. When asked where to put the perfume
she replies: "A woman should wear a fragrance wherever she expects to be kissed" ("A Woman").
Coco also launches what turned out, according to the instructions of the designer, had to embody a
concept of femininity timeless, unique, and fascinating. The avant–garde idea of Chanel breaks
every scheme imagining her fragrance for a modern and independent woman, far from the
stereotype that envisages she should perfume of roses. Hence, Chanel No. 5 is the first perfume that
rejects the convention and symbolizes the technological and cultural innovation, furthering the
women 's empowerment.
Chanel No. 5 is a concentration of absolute femininity that shook the world of fragrances forever
with an abstract composition of 80

Grenouille As The Tmell: The Portrayal Of Human Beings
Metaphor of Grenouille as the Tick: the Portrayal of Human Beings Perhaps nobody wants to be
called a tick when it comes to profile pictures, but a man was branded as an abhorrent tick by his
creator. In the novel Perfume: the Story of a Murderer, Patrick Süskind describes the main character
as a tick that would do an action that which normal human beings would be unwilling to. Grenouille
is born with a powerful ability to smell and pursues a quest to obtain the perfect perfume in the
world at the cost of 26 budding girls. Throughout the novel, the author uses the metaphor of the tick
systematically to illustrate Grenouille who is subsequently revealed as a mirror to the dark side of
human beings, suggesting that people are as abhorrent as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

For Süskind, the protagonist should be able to obtain skills of perfumery and make the best perfume
that the world has ever seen. To survive through his childhood, apprenticeship, and the society
around him, he is required to be tenacious enough, not to mention olfactory talent. At the tannery
Grenouille uses all his energy to be obedient, store his "energies of his defiance and contumacy and
expend them solely to survive the impending ice age in his tick like way" (p. 14). At Baldini's
perfumery, Grenouille is able to survive. When he regains his purpose of life, he revives
miraculously from a dead like state: "he was only sleeping very soundly, deep in dreams, sucking
fluids back into himself. The blisters were already beginning to dry out on his skin, the craters of
pus had begun to drain, the wounds to close" (p. 43). Lastly in the perfumery in Grasse, Grenouille
endures every hardship to reach the goal: "This went on for several days, from morning till evening.
It was tiring work. Grenouille had arms of lead, calluses on his hands, and pains in his back as he
staggered back to his cabin in the evening"(p. 68). From these adversities that Grenouille endures,
the author imbues the reader with the feeling that he could make it to the end. The author wants to

Marketing Strategy Of Chanel
INTRODUCTION
Gabriell (Coco) Chanel founded her company in 1913 in Paris, France. The main profile of the
company at the beginnings was fashion design by Chanel herself from 1910 to 1971. She was a real
innovator on the market. After her death Karl Lagerfeld became his successor, currently he is the
mastermind behind the world–famous, top–selling luxury brand. Chanel soon expanded the product
range and started to design luxury hats, clothes, fragrances, accessories and cosmetics. The ideology
behind the brand is elegancy, beauty and self–respect of women; Chanel has a parallelism with
personal identity embedded into luxury. This is illustrated by the current slogan of N˚5 Fragrance "A
woman. A Destiny. A Parfume." (Chanel, 2014). The Chanel Fragrance called N˚5 is an ultimate
success since the very beginning it was introduced in the market as a symbol of femininity in the
early 1920's. Almost a hundred years later Chanel's N˚5 fragrance of the same composition is still
top–seller even though the number of concurrent companies or products has increased significantly.
Some research says that a bottle is sold every half a minute (Vogue, 2014).

of the Upper class. Later on, although the strategy was not changed, the company decided to make

Perfume Advert Analysis
For my perfume advertisement, Eternity, I have used numerous techniques to persuade the audience
to purchase this product. Firstly, I have used a well–known couple for the main background setup.
Since these couples are close together, this makes the perfume more memorable for consumers, as
these famous subjects are used to promote the product. This also creates a positive feeling about the
company and the advertisement which is more influential, entertaining and appealing to the
audience. The couple is used as intimate and romantic connotations which is a successful tactic in
persuading the audience to purchase the perfume. In the advert, we can see a man on the right hand
side wearing a black shirt with a black shadow cast upon him to depict the idea of the man not being
too muscular or dominating the advert. The man's body language is showing affection to the lady as
his eyes are gazed low, followed by the gentle expression on his face. This displays positive
emotions towards the woman as he portrays a romantic relationship by which the woman is adored.
The lady on the other hand, has her right hand on the man's chest followed by the elegant and
feminine body posture. The woman's hair is open loose with cosmetic makeup on her face. This
shows that the lady wants to impress her man and are all signs of affection. The message to the
audience is too be attracted to your partner just like the ones used for the advert by using Eternity as
their fragrance.

Viva La Juicy Glacé
Viva La Juicy's Glacé perfume ad uses a beautiful, young, blonde woman in a fitted, pink sparkly
dress, lying on a background of white roses and pink ribbons to sale the vision of glamour,
freshness, and a carefree mood through their perfume. The way the woman in the picture is
beautifully portrayed, with all her beauty, glamour, , and also the displaying of the bottle of perfume,
shows how this perfume will give the woman wearing it the same life as portrayed in the ad.
In the perfume ad by Viva La Juicy, the young woman is adoringly glamorous, from her facial
expression to how she is dressed, to the jewelry she wears. Her makeup is soft but accompanied by a
bright pink lipstick to match her rosy pink cheeks. Her skin appears soft and flawless, which is
enough for any girl to want to run out and buy this scent. The expression on her face is a slight, flirty
grin. Her lips are almost puckered. Her soft skin is hugged tightly by the pink, sparkly dress she
wears. Wrapping her wrists lie sparkly gold and silver bracelets to accent the sparkles on her dress.
She looks straight off the red carpet with how perfect her hair, makeup, body, and outfit is. The

Raskolikov's Theory In Crime And Punishment
Dostoevsky's novel Crime and Punishment analyzes a provocative theory constructed by the main
character, Raskolnikov. His theory divides ordinary and extraordinary people. According to
Raskolnikov, ordinary people have no opinion of their own, being just mere followers, while
extraordinary people craft new opinions for the society. Extraordinary people are prone to greatness,
being therefore justified to act in any way in order to achieve it, even if it means to kill or steal. An
interesting example Raskolnikov makes is:
"the lawgivers and founders of mankind, starting from the most ancient and going on to the
Lycurguses, the Solons, the Muhammads, the Napoleons, and so forth, all of them to a man were
criminals, from the fact alone that in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This theory can also be applied to Patrick SUskind's novel Perfume, more precisely to the main
character, Grenouille. Ironically, if Raskolnikov was not able to live up to his own theory and prove
to be an extraordinary individual, Grenouille becomes one without realizing it. I will further on
expand my argument by investigating Grenouille's motive, technique of conducting the killings and
his relation to guilt.
Grenouille's unique gift allows him to understand the world in a way that no one else can. He never
forgets a scent by labeling them in his palace of odor and by constantly combining them in the most
beautiful ways. Moreover, he knows that attraction is based on scent "... this scent will be ripened
and take on a gravity that no one, man or woman, will be able to escape. People will be
overwhelmed, disarmed, helpless before the magic of this girl, and they will not know why"
(Suskind 171).
Grenouille's motive of committing all those crimes is concentrated around a superior idea, a great
one: creating the most extraordinary perfume in the world, a perfume that will allow him to rule
mankind by combining the scents of the most exquisite

Calvin Klain Customer Review Essay
For the Live Irresistible product the target are women of different ages, but in particular the young
ones or the ones that crave to feel younger. However, it would be smarter to make their target a lot
bigger. They could also include women who are older and instead of advertising the scent as
youthful they could call it fresh and for everyone. If there was a change to change the product, a
good choice would be to follow Calvin Klein's footsteps and change it to unisex. But in future it is
good idea to create unisex product, because Calvin Klain customer reviews are very good, for
example:
"I decided to buy a bottle too in 95 and we went on vacation with 9 boys ages up to 18

It is a good idea because if someone is looking for a perfect smell they might not want to buy a full–

times or so. They were expensive bottles and since I don't wear them anymore (because I lost
interest in them) I am looking to buy more so this time I want to do it smarter. I went to a local

* Flowers and blossoms: Undoubtedly the largest source of aromatics. Includes the flowers of
several species of rose and jasmine, as well as osmanthus, plumeria, mimosa, tuberose, narcissus,
scented geranium, cassie, ambrette as well as the blossoms of citrus and ylang–ylang trees. Although
not traditionally thought of as a flower, the unopened flower buds of the clove are also commonly
used. Most orchid flowers are not commercially used to produce essential oils or absolutes, except
in the case of vanilla, an orchid, which must be pollinated first and made into seed pods before use
in perfumery. * Fruits: Fresh fruits such as apples, strawberries, cherries unfortunately do not yield
the expected odors when extracted; if such fragrance notes are found in a perfume, they are
synthetic. Notable exceptions include litsea cubeba, vanilla, and juniper berry. The most commonly
used fruits yield their aromatics from the rind; they include citrus such as oranges, lemons, and
limes. Although grapefruit rind is still used for aromatics, more and more commercially used
grapefruit aromatics are artificially synthesized since the natural aromatic contains sulfur and its
degradation product is quite unpleasant in smell. * Leaves and twigs: Commonly used for perfumery
are lavender leaf, patchouli, sage, violets, rosemary, and citrus leaves. Sometimes leaves are valued

Perfume As A Critique Of Perfume
An Analysis of Perfume as a Critique of Religion
Perfume by Patrick Süskind follows Jean–Baptiste Grenouille through an incredible journey of
survival, perseverance, and ascension to godlike power. It, being set during the Enlightenment,
depicts a time where people let curiosity reign and science flourish. Nevertheless, although people
were becoming more scientific in their thought, religion was still a part of people's lives. The
presence of religious elements in the novel, however, serves to be more than just a descriptive tool
to flesh out the world of the novel. Because of the biblical parallels that present Grenouille as a
messiah–like figure, and also further comments on religion through narration, the reader is often
pushed to consider the nature of faith and the faithful. In effect, Süskind uses Grenouille and the
world of Perfume to examine and critique the functions and foundations of worshipping a god.
One way the novel does so is by satirizing religion using sexual elements. In all major religions,
sexuality is far removed from everything holy. This is especially true for Christian monks like
Father Terrier. However, when Jeanne Bussie goes to him to give Grenouille back, he breathes in
"the scent of milk and cheesy wool exuded by the wet nurse" (8) and finds it a "pleasant aroma" (8).
Church representatives have pledged abstinence and are essentially the prime exemplar of sexual
neutrality and purity, yet Father Terrier inhales the wet nurse's scent– an act

Reaction Paper On Perfume
Perfume is mixture of fragrant aroma compounds or essential oils, the first evidence of the use of
perfume by mankind dates back to the very old Egyptian civilizations around 2400 BC1.
Throughout the ages, fragrances have become gradually more essential and accessible. Nowadays,
the perfume business is a billion–dollar industry 2. The companies also synthesize and trade the
individual raw materials used in perfumes, the perfume stocks are relatively unknown companies
that create and supply perfumes according to the wishes of their customers. The perfume raw
materials are generally complex mixtures of synthetic or natural (e.g. essential oils) organic
compounds, the fortitude of the composition of an unknown perfume, the so called perfume–
formulation process, is not an easy task. Apart from the olfactive expertise of the perfumers, it also
wants advanced analytical tools. Because most perfume components are a polar and semi–volatile in

an odor sensation by an individual when dispersed in 1 m3 of neutral air. Hence, 1 OU/m3 is the

odor concentration in terms of OU/m3 of a mixture is not the algebraic sum of OUs for the
individual components, but results from the combination of complex phenomena and mutual

2.2.1. Age:
On average, a woman starts wearing perfume at the age of 12. We can identify two big age
categories of women:
– Women under 25: These women become more sophisticated in their taste in personal care and
want a fragrance that makes them feel attractive and is noticed by others. They are the heaviest
fragrances users and are using them more frequently than any other group. They are also more likely
to feel stylish, sophisticated, fun or unique while wearing a fragrance. Moreover, they explore
different scents and brands. Finally, citrus scented fragrances appeal more to women under 18 years
old while flowery or fruity scented fragrances appeal more to women under 25 years old. However,
even if these women are using fragrances, they are buying less of it than the other age groups.
– Women between 25 and 49: These women are more likely to wear a perfume to feel "sexy" and to
switch fragrances within their collection once a week or more. They know

Appeals to Women
Most advertisers use different appeals to create stereotypes about their audiences because people
often buy magazines which fit the stereotypes they make about themselves. For example, people
who always read Newsweek are mostly people who are at work, who are economically stable, and
who are interested in the world situation. On the other hand, the audiences of Shape are mostly
young women who are interested in reducing their weights or shaping up. In Jib Fowles' essay,

in many advertisements. To corroborate his postulations of advertisement, I focused on a specific

Also, the copies of "Splendor" fetch audiences' attention by appealing to their longing for romance
and affections. The ad of "True Love" also appeals to sexuality by showing a woman with a drowsy
expression in a lying down position. The second appeal I found is the need for autonomy, the need
to credit the self. The three ads about women's suits, glassware, and make–up are great examples.
An ad of women's suit has five women in five different gray suits who look competent. The catch
phrase says, 'Let'em know who you are.' The other ad of glassware shows a beautiful white woman
in a white blouse with glasses. She has her blond hair put up, and she is reading a paper. The copy
on the upper left corner reads, 'Endless Possibilities.' The third ad of Maybelline's foundation cake
also has a white woman wearing white blouse with her hair up. All of these three ads have women
who look aspired, intellectual, and independent. These ads strike women's strong need to become
the way they want, and to endorse themselves. These appeals are effective in persuading women to
buy the products by giving women illusions that they will look 'sexy' or 'independent' just like the
women in the ads if they buy the products.
By finding the appeals advertisers use, one can tell how the advertisers view the

Perfume, by Suskind conforms to conventional standards of the horror genre. The author takes
advantage of this conformity by making Grenouille into the typical horror genre killer or monster to
produce a story with a chilling and dark atmosphere. The author effectively uses both
characterization and stylistic features to develop and shape Grenouille's character into such monster.
According to horror conventions a story must have a monster, whether it be a serial killer or
supernatural entity "There is usually an element involving death. For example, a murderer, a ghostly
presence." (Crouse 4). Grenouille's character can fit into the former of these two categories as a
murder. Throughout the book he develops into a monster by taking several lives in many different
settings. For instance his first kill involves the remorseless strangulation of a young girl in Paris
"She was so frozen with terror at the sight of him that he had plenty of time to put his hands on her
throat...keeping his eyes closed tight as he strangled her...When she laid dead he laid her on the
ground." (suskind 42–43). Notice the description of Grenouille's first murder and the language the
author uses to describe the agony the victim feels compared to the feelings of the main character.
The victim is 'frozen in terror' while Grenouille has 'plenty of time to put his hand on her throat.' the
victim dies 'she laid dead' and the way he handles the body 'laid her on the ground.'. The amount of

Company's Culture
Organization culture is one of the most essential factor that decide the success or failure of a

organizational culture is needed to cope with those changes. EMPER perfumes culture can be
divided into multiple parts which are:
Attention to Detail EMPER perfumes can be considered a company that focuses a lot on details.
That is because of their non–stop research to find new perfume designs and produce them at the

Outcome or process Orientation process oriented culture can be found within the medium to high
levels of the organization due to them believing that teamwork is the best way to innovate. On the

the least amount of expenses payed. One example is Tunisia, in 2009 they had an import tax of

its tax considerably. As discussed in the economic conditions, the financial crisis had a tremendous

Advertisements have become a huge part of society in the modernized world of today. Around the

Who Is Roland Barthes Opium Fragrance
A 1992 commercial for Yves Saint Laurent's Opium fragrance, directed by David Lynch, takes the
pleasurable sensual experience of perfume to faraway places via mythologized drug analogy and
orientalist fantasy. The commercial follows a female model's ritualistic use of Opium perfume. She
walks upstairs in an elegant modern home, passes a grand piano, sits on a divan, and undoes the top
of a bottle of Opium. Her eyes close, her deep breaths rise over the soundtrack, and it is clear that
the fragrance has intoxicated her as if it were literally the substance of its namesake. By the logic of
Roland Barthes' semiotic theories and his book Mythologies, this perfume ad's signifiers of drug use

This commercial relies on a strategy of myth making that Barthes calls exoticism, in which the
established order constructs the other as an object or spectacle (Barthes 266). The mythology of
Orientalism, an exoticism with a specific East Asian focus, reduces Chinese history and culture into
aesthetic qualities that can be used to incite feelings of exotic escape in Western consumers. Barthes'
theories of mythology are explained through semiotics, which understands signifiers as images that
stand in for other concepts, and the signified as what is replaced by signifier images. The myths
created out of relationships between signifier may seem so natural and depoliticized to their readers
that they go unnoticed. A number of signifiers in the commercial stand in for a general signified
essence of "the East". At the beginning and end of the commercial, a folding fan rolls across the
screen. At the end, white orchids float into the left half of the image, as Opium's red and gold bottle
dissolves into the right. The fan, the white orchids, and the design of the Opium bottle are all
signifiers of warm, sensual, feminine qualities with a specific "Eastern" bent. At

According to Foucault, power does not belong to the individual, but to the system, to the institution.
In his essay on Discipline and Punish, Foucault presents his idea of the panopticon mechanism, a
mechanism in which visibility is a trap. With little importance over the actual individual in the role
of the observer or of the observed, the object of the system is total power over the observed. Due to
the unique shape of the panopticon, there are no corners and thus no blind spots for the observed to
hide in. The private space is replaced by the public one. Furthermore, as final evidence of total
control, the observed never knows for sure if they are being watched or not, as they can't see the
observer (Foucault 200–205). Foucault further argues that this system is followed by any
government institution, placing the society under permanent observation. Individuals might try to
evade the system, but achieving liberation and freedom is not something that anyone could do.

Influence Of Perfumes And Fragrances
Walking into a perfumery, you are overwhelmed by the scents of citrus, floral, oceanic, woodsy, and
more. Endless varieties of perfumes and fragrances at your grasp waiting to be bought. Which one
will you choose? In many cases, advertising influences people's choice in perfumes and fragrances.
Not only does advertising affect the choice in buying perfumes, but also in other areas of life like
clothing, food, drinks, fitness and more. Even in the times before the technology era, advertising
was a key component in selling products. Advertisements included notice boards, free samples,
newspaper ads, and handbills (O'Barr 1–3). Advertisements became such an important selling point
for companies in which helped products be sold and companies ... Show more content on

For example, a perfume print ad created in 1965 by Dana called Ambush is a intriguing
advertisement. The print ad is in black and white with the perfume in the middle of the poster with
words written to the side "from the goddess of fragrance Ambush perfume" while there are two
women's upper bodies depicted in the ad. One seems to be a statue of a goddess wearing a crown
that contains angel wings and star earrings with a gentle smile on her face. The other woman is real
and she is behind the statue with a smile and only a side of her face is shown. Lastly, there are long
thin leaves that obscure the view of the women slightly although the perfume is not and is the item
that stands out to the audience. The ad effectively draws the attention of women as it brings
curiosity to the viewers in trying to figure out who is behind the statue as well as referencing to
godesses, which are known to be powerful and beautiful women. Another criteria in creating an
effective perfume advertisement is endorsing celebrities. In many cases, advertisements feature
celebrities, using their popularity to increase perfume purchases. For instance, Marilyn Monroe, the
most glamorous movie star at the time said in an interview that she wears Chanel No. 5, in which
the next week sales skyrocketed. Chanel No. 5 has become one of the top and oldest perfume
companies to have created an advertising platform for perfume by creating short films promoting
their products. The short films

Comparing Two Advertisements
As time progresses, many companies change the style in which they portray their advertisement. In
the two Chanel advertisements, one being from 1937 and the other being from 2007, many
comparisons and contrasts can be distinguished. Both ads are similar in their look and target
audience, while they also have different styles to them. The vintage ad is a more dark and gloomy
ad, while the modern ad is a more light and bright advertisement. The target audience of both
advertisements is women who want a perfume to make them feel beautiful, and the purpose of both
ads is to persuade consumers of why Chanel is the best perfume to purchase. However, the
techniques of both advertisements are very different. Even though the advertisements were made in
two different centuries, they both share many commonalities. Neither advertisement contained a
slogan. However, both ads are selling Chanel No. 5 perfume and both ads display a design of the
perfume bottle. By doing so, this allows the audience to see a visual representation of what they will
be getting if they purchase the product. Also, the ad is using beautiful women that are wearing nice

The use of famous celebrities in the advertisements was a source of further persuasion of the target
audience, being that some women desire to be like those celebrities. Although the perfumes were
created many decades apart, they shared the same purpose, yet used different methods to do so. The
two ads shared many differences, one being the amount of textual information. During the days of
vintage advertisements, producers believed that the text was more important, whereas in modern
ads, producers believe that consumers will be sold on the picture rather than the text. Both
advertisement producers were able to clearly illustrate the product and its design, as well as their
target audience, thus strengthening the

Abstract Patrick Suskind's Perfume: the story of a murderer provokes many questions of what is the
inspiration of the characters and why are they like that. His writing style many times give us a really
vivid image in our mind of what the situation is like at that point, but as more images come to mind
the more weird and off the people in the story seem. So why does he have such mediocre characters
and what is he trying to show though them. Thus this essay focuses on the connection of the
characters in the story and the life of the people of that period, and what is Patrick Suskind's trying

The lady in the center of the picture has a bad–tempered look on her face, and has her arms crossed.
Toward the picture's right side, there are pumpkins of assorted shapes and sizes. The pumpkins are
candle holders, and of course, they hold pumpkin scented candles. The smell of the candles reminds
me of Thanksgiving, and pumpkin pie with cinnamon. Some of the pumpkin shaped candle holders
feel almost like real pumpkins, even though I know they are made of Styrofoam or metal. When this
picture was taken, it was the day before Labor Day, and there were a lot of people at Bath and Body
Works trying to catch a bargain.
You can also see many fall decorations in the picture. There are artificial leaves hanging in the right
corner of the picture. The leaves look like they could be a part of a real tree. They are in mid
transition between green and colors like brown and red. Like I have previously mentioned, there are
a substantial amount of pumpkins in the picture that make you think of fall. Fall is my favorite time
of the year because there are so many colors, and the trees lose their leaves. If you walk on the
sidewalk during fall, the leaves will crunch underneath your feet as you walk. I also like fall because
my birthday is October, and Halloween takes place. Bath and Body Works even makes Halloween
themed hand sanitizers, soaps, and lotions. The history of perfume is shocking and very interesting.

Analysis Of The Novel ' Perfume Help Grenouille '
Grenouille is a character born destined to be a murderer, but he alone can't accomplish it. Süskind
offers him a plethora of characters that can help him in his journey to becoming a master murderer
and perfume maker. The use of minor characters in the novel Perfume help Grenouille grow and
develop into a murderer, like a tick, he leeches off others and uses them for personal growth.
Grenouille absorbs the traits of his host, using them to keep him alive, they assist him in fitting into
society, no longer making him a noticeable monster and they are what motivates him to complete his
goals.

This quote shows his initial weakness and how without the host, he wouldn't be able to survive. And
like the tick that abandons its host when it takes all it can, Grenouille leaves his host, Madame
Gaillard, leaving her to the cruel fate of a terrible death, a motif of those who encounter Grenouille,
"There they put her in a ward populated with hundreds of the mortally ill, the same ward in which
her husband had died, laid her in a bed shared with total strangers, pressing body upon body with
five other women, and for three long weeks let her die in public view."(Süskind, 13) Süskind's minor
characters in Perfume assist Grenouille in his knowledge of creating perfume and fitting into
society, allowing him to develop into his murderous role. Baldini takes Grenouille under his wing
and teaches him the way of making perfumes "But Grenouille, too, profited from the disciplined
procedures Baldini forced upon him."(Süskind, 38) Grenouille uses his tick–like properties and
absorbs knowledge from his hosts. He here, can take knowledge that Baldini offers to him and uses
it for his own personal gains. The foundation of perfuming knowledge given by Baldini allows
Grenouille to grow in strength in his ability to make these perfumes, bringing him closer to his true
identity as a murderer. The help of the marquis allows Grenouille to blend into society well enough

Ancient Egyptian Perfume
Perfumes have been used for over 5,000 years. It is believed that the ancient Egyptian 's were the
first to incorporate perfume into their culture. The Egyptians believed that the perfume was from the
sweat of their sun god, Ra. Originally perfume (fragrances) were made from a combination of plant
or animal products and rich oils. From Egypt perfume spread to other locations including Rome and
Greece. Perfume was also widely prized in ancient China and Iran, although the Chinese used the
scent in the form of an incense. Archaeologists have found evidence of perfume 's use throughout
history and more often than not it comes in the form of intricate perfume containers or vessels. We

Tapputi was the world 's first recorded chemist mentioned in a cuneiform tablet from the 2nd
millennium BC as a perfume maker. She distilled flowers, oil, and calamus along with other
aromatics then filtered them and put them back in the still several times. Arabian chemists Al–Kindi
and Jabir ibn Hayyan are credited with establishing the perfume industry. Jabir invented and
developed techniques used for distillation, evaporation and filtration. The real founder of the
perfume industry goes to Al–Kindi though as he carried out extensive research and experiments
using plants and other sources to produce many varieties of scented products. He also wrote a book
on perfumes in the 9th century. It is the Book of the Chemistry of Perfume and Distillations and it
contains more than 100 different recipes for oils, salves, aromatic water and substitutes.
Although the Egyptians are given credit for the origin of perfume – perfume slowly spread
throughout the world. It wasn 't until 1190 that perfume began to be produced commercial in Paris.
France became the perfume capital of the world and it developed into a massive industry.

The Shift Of Perfume
Analysis of the shifts of Grenouille in Patrick Süskind's Perfume
In Perfume, Patrick Süskind writes about the life of an extraordinary boy named Grenouille in 18th–
century France. The author presents the shifts of existential thinking of his main character
throughout the book. The main purpose of living for Grenouille mirrors that of every other human
being – to discover the world, with his exception of seeking only the scenting part of it. The series of
events in the boy's life develop his character and the various goals he strives for: survival, odor
education, perfume making, peace, own smell, smell extraction, and to die.
Grenouille's birth is the start of his first ordeal. In order to survive, his first, primal instinct tells him
to make a cry, not for sympathy and love, but cry for a life. Suskind uses a contrast to show how the
neatly born baby brings "himself to people's attention and his mother to the gallow" (21). The
miserable birth or the option of a "modest exit" do not affected the nearly mature decision of
Grenouille to grab the opportunity of existing, "sparing the world a great deal of mischief" (21). His
tenacious character is shown from his ability to take all of the power of his nurturer. He ... Show

imagery to illustrate the image of his bad dream: "Grenouille was completely wrapped in fog,

as Grenouille's –– scentless. Drowning in his non–existing smell, the dreamer wakes up with a new
dedication –– to find his own smell. The book climax ends with the unsuccessful attempts of the
unfortunate to seek for answers to this mystery. The "greatest nose" in Paris which can sense any

Miss Dior Advertising In Advertising
For many people in the world to see an advertisement and move past it because they find them
rather annoying has become the normalcy of today's society. However, if people actually paid
attention to those advertisements the readers would find that they think some of the ads should not
have been allowed. An ad for Miss Dior perfume was presented in a late issue of Vogue with a
model who looks to be about twenty–four years old. The model has shoulder length blonde hair, a
clear skin tone, and a facial expression that could be considered provocative. The model is naked
and only covered by a dress that she holds up which still only covers a portion of her top, middle
section, and private area. Despite this dress, her complete right leg, thigh, arm, neck, and shoulders
are revealed. In the foreground is a Miss Dior perfume bottle with the words "Miss Dior and you,
what would you do for love?". In Jean Kilbourne's Killing Us Softly 4, she states that
advertisements often send certain messages about women. Kilbourne claims that unrealistic ideas of
women are often proposed within ads, such as symbolizing women as objects and not people, or
even the idea that if you are not beautiful, then you are nothing. In the Dior advertisement, a few of
its aspects uphold statements made by Jean Kilbourne such as sexualizing models to sell a product,
emphasizing the idea of looking young and attractive, and placing models in vulnerable positions.

Tom Robbins' Jitterbug Perfume Essay
Tom Robbins' Jitterbug Perfume
In his 1984 novel Jitterbug Perfume, Tom Robbins presents a narrative that rivals the often
fantastical tales told in myth. Using classical mythology as a foundation, and, in particular,
providing a loose adaptation of The Odyssey by Homer, Robbins updates and modifies characters
and concepts in an effort to reinforce the importance of the journey of life and the discovery of self.
Like the ancient myth–makers, Robbins commands the reader's attention with outrageous situations
and events while at the same time providing characters that the reader can relate to and learn from.
Jitterbug Perfume is a story of epic proportions, spanning a time–frame of almost one thousand
years. The protagonist, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, the beet as "the grounded moon–boat" calls to mind Odysseus's various nautical
incidents and accidents (1). This discourse is chapter one of four brief chapters that introduce the
modern–day characters, much as Homer begins his epic with the four books that acquaint us with
the people and the situation in Ithica. Each work is told retrospectively by a third–person omniscient
narrator, and the adventures of Alobar and Kudra are relayed primarily through flashbacks, much as
the story of Odysseus is told. Homer's use of Athena as a character whose presence permeates and
drives the action of the epic is mirrored, albeit perversely, by Robbins' use of the beet as a similar
"character," an entity that permeates and affects the lives of the characters in the book. The novel, as
does the epic, ends with all the primary characters coming together to effect a satisfying conclusion.
A key to understanding his writing, says author Tom Robbins, is a knowledge of Greek myth. A
particular influence on him is the life and work of Joseph Campbell, author of several books on
mythology (Hoyser and Stookey 9). Campbell, in turn, owes influence to the insights of analytic
psychologist Carl Jung. Jung recognized the patterns within myths ––– throughout the world and
across all cultures –– of characters, situations, and events, and identified these recurring images as
archetypes (Harris and Platzner 40). Campbell

Perfume : Perfume And The Nature Of Perfume
Perfume and the Nature of Evil The life of Jean Baptiste Grenouille in Perfume shows that one can
be born inherently evil and that not all evil is learned. Perfume by Patrick Suskind although fictional
still gives an exceptional look into the mind and the making of a murder. The book has an array of
examples that prove Grenouille was born evil from his unusual sense of smell to his lack thereof a
scent. When looking closer Perfume has many other displays of his inherently born evil.
Jean Baptiste was born under unusual circumstances and showed odd behavior, not long after his
birth. Jean Baptiste's first perceived acts of greed began right after birth:
The infant under the gutting table begins to squall. As prescribed by law, they give it to a wet nurse
and arrest the mother. She is tried and found guilty of multiple infanticide, a few weeks later
decapitated. By this time the child has already changed wet nurses three times. No one wanted to
keep it for more than a couple of days. It was too greedy, they said, sucked as much as two
babies(Suskind 6).
In truth, Jean Baptiste Grenouille always did what he needed to survive even as a baby.
Right from birth, he displayed his greed by screeching out as his mother left him for dead. This act
could be seen as a normal display from a baby, but Grenouille was no normal baby. He laid
presumably silent while his mother was unconscious and a crowd formed around her. When she
awoke and tried to abandon him, which lead Grenouille to scream. She willingly and admittedly left
multiple babies to their death without a single display of emotion. It can be said that Grenouille's
emotional disconnect, selfishness, and greed could have been inherited from his mother.
Other signs that point to him being an abnormal baby were his eating habits. He was shifted from
wet nurse to wet nurse because of his greed until he ended up at Madame Gaillard's.
"The young Grenouille was such a tick. He lived encapsulated in himself and waited for better
times. He gave the world nothing but his dung – no smile, no cry, no glimmer in the eye, not even
his own scent" (23). Babies are the essences of life because the represent the innocence of life. They
cry, laugh and have a twinkle in

The Effect Of Cologne On The Body
The Effects of Cologne Can the way a man smells actually affect his life? Can buying expensive
cologne give him more confidence or make him irresistible? Cologne advertisers would certainly
seem to think so. In truth, scents can affect an individual in different ways. Certain scents can have
particular effects on the body, and they can actually alter the way a person behaves or perceives
himself. Scents that work positively with a man's body chemistry can actually change the way he
acts or thinks. However, when cologne ads promise men that they will be handsome, successful,
powerful, and talented because of the scents they wear, the industry begins to sell them fantasy
rather than reality. Advertisements for cologne are very unique. Cologne ads usually portray a
message that says "wearing this will make you attractive" or "you will be more powerful by wearing
this cologne." Most of these advertisements feature men, since men are their target audience.
However, some other advertisements feature women, since women sometimes buy cologne for men
as a gift. Some advertisements, like this one, feature celebrities. Having a good–looking celebrity,
such as James Franco, draws in the attention of viewers. This advertisement does a great job of
visual advertising. The dark, simple background of city lights is intended to focus one's attention
solely on the image and the text, while portraying a scene of mystery or perhaps adventure. This
advertisement is fairly simple, yet allows the

The Fashion Design Of Chanel

  • 1. The Fashion Design Of Chanel It has been over a century since Mademoiselle Chanel, determined to reform the concept of femininity as much in style as in the essence, commissioned the chemist Ernest Beaux to develop what will become the symbol of international perfumery. Chanel No. 5 is unquestionably the most legendary ever made fragrance, described as an opera of olfactory art. Independent, unconventional, and provocative, Coco Chanel transformed her unfamiliar name into an obligatory reference point for fashion design of the twentieth. As an icon of female strength, she translates the complexity and elegance that characterize the woman, with the creation of what would become the scent par excellence. Her way of conceiving the perfume is peculiar. When asked where to put the perfume she replies: "A woman should wear a fragrance wherever she expects to be kissed" ("A Woman"). Coco also launches what turned out, according to the instructions of the designer, had to embody a concept of femininity timeless, unique, and fascinating. The avant–garde idea of Chanel breaks every scheme imagining her fragrance for a modern and independent woman, far from the stereotype that envisages she should perfume of roses. Hence, Chanel No. 5 is the first perfume that rejects the convention and symbolizes the technological and cultural innovation, furthering the women 's empowerment. Chanel No. 5 is a concentration of absolute femininity that shook the world of fragrances forever with an abstract composition of 80 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Grenouille As The Tmell: The Portrayal Of Human Beings Metaphor of Grenouille as the Tick: the Portrayal of Human Beings Perhaps nobody wants to be called a tick when it comes to profile pictures, but a man was branded as an abhorrent tick by his creator. In the novel Perfume: the Story of a Murderer, Patrick Süskind describes the main character as a tick that would do an action that which normal human beings would be unwilling to. Grenouille is born with a powerful ability to smell and pursues a quest to obtain the perfect perfume in the world at the cost of 26 budding girls. Throughout the novel, the author uses the metaphor of the tick systematically to illustrate Grenouille who is subsequently revealed as a mirror to the dark side of human beings, suggesting that people are as abhorrent as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For Süskind, the protagonist should be able to obtain skills of perfumery and make the best perfume that the world has ever seen. To survive through his childhood, apprenticeship, and the society around him, he is required to be tenacious enough, not to mention olfactory talent. At the tannery Grenouille uses all his energy to be obedient, store his "energies of his defiance and contumacy and expend them solely to survive the impending ice age in his tick like way" (p. 14). At Baldini's perfumery, Grenouille is able to survive. When he regains his purpose of life, he revives miraculously from a dead like state: "he was only sleeping very soundly, deep in dreams, sucking fluids back into himself. The blisters were already beginning to dry out on his skin, the craters of pus had begun to drain, the wounds to close" (p. 43). Lastly in the perfumery in Grasse, Grenouille endures every hardship to reach the goal: "This went on for several days, from morning till evening. It was tiring work. Grenouille had arms of lead, calluses on his hands, and pains in his back as he staggered back to his cabin in the evening"(p. 68). From these adversities that Grenouille endures, the author imbues the reader with the feeling that he could make it to the end. • 5. Marketing Strategy Of Chanel INTRODUCTION Gabriell (Coco) Chanel founded her company in 1913 in Paris, France. The main profile of the company at the beginnings was fashion design by Chanel herself from 1910 to 1971. She was a real innovator on the market. After her death Karl Lagerfeld became his successor, currently he is the mastermind behind the world–famous, top–selling luxury brand. Chanel soon expanded the product range and started to design luxury hats, clothes, fragrances, accessories and cosmetics. The ideology behind the brand is elegancy, beauty and self–respect of women; Chanel has a parallelism with personal identity embedded into luxury. This is illustrated by the current slogan of N˚5 Fragrance "A woman. A Destiny. A Parfume." (Chanel, 2014). The Chanel Fragrance called N˚5 is an ultimate success since the very beginning it was introduced in the market as a symbol of femininity in the early 1920's. Almost a hundred years later Chanel's N˚5 fragrance of the same composition is still top–seller even though the number of concurrent companies or products has increased significantly. Some research says that a bottle is sold every half a minute (Vogue, 2014). LITERATURE REVIEW I work with multiple archive and contemporary resources accessible from the internet which deal with the success of Chanel. Using these documents from the database of Time, The ... The perfume debuted on the market in 1921 and could only be purchased at the Chanel boutiques. Its marketing successfully identified it with luxury and privilege of the Upper class. Later on, although the strategy was not changed, the company decided to make the perfume more available – middle price strategy was adopted to expand the target audience of the ... • 7. Perfume Advert Analysis For my perfume advertisement, Eternity, I have used numerous techniques to persuade the audience to purchase this product. Firstly, I have used a well–known couple for the main background setup. Since these couples are close together, this makes the perfume more memorable for consumers, as these famous subjects are used to promote the product. This also creates a positive feeling about the company and the advertisement which is more influential, entertaining and appealing to the audience. The couple is used as intimate and romantic connotations which is a successful tactic in persuading the audience to purchase the perfume. In the advert, we can see a man on the right hand side wearing a black shirt with a black shadow cast upon him to depict the idea of the man not being too muscular or dominating the advert. The man's body language is showing affection to the lady as his eyes are gazed low, followed by the gentle expression on his face. This displays positive emotions towards the woman as he portrays a romantic relationship by which the woman is adored. The lady on the other hand, has her right hand on the man's chest followed by the elegant and feminine body posture. The woman's hair is open loose with cosmetic makeup on her face. This shows that the lady wants to impress her man and are all signs of affection. The message to the audience is too be attracted to your partner just like the ones used for the advert by using Eternity as their fragrance. In addition, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Summary Of Viva La Juicy Perfume English Comp 1 Visual Analysis I have composed this assignment myself without borrowing from others. I have read the syllabus, I understand the definition of plagiarism and the consequences of it, and I realize if I am found to have plagiarized any part of this essay, I will fail the entire course. Viva La Juicy Glacé Viva La Juicy's Glacé perfume ad uses a beautiful, young, blonde woman in a fitted, pink sparkly dress, lying on a background of white roses and pink ribbons to sale the vision of glamour, freshness, and a carefree mood through their perfume. The way the woman in the picture is beautifully portrayed, with all her beauty, glamour, , and also the displaying of the bottle of perfume, shows how this perfume will give the woman wearing it the same life as portrayed in the ad. In the perfume ad by Viva La Juicy, the young woman is adoringly glamorous, from her facial expression to how she is dressed, to the jewelry she wears. Her makeup is soft but accompanied by a bright pink lipstick to match her rosy pink cheeks. Her skin appears soft and flawless, which is enough for any girl to want to run out and buy this scent. The expression on her face is a slight, flirty grin. Her lips are almost puckered. Her soft skin is hugged tightly by the pink, sparkly dress she wears. Wrapping her wrists lie sparkly gold and silver bracelets to accent the sparkles on her dress. She looks straight off the red carpet with how perfect her hair, makeup, body, and outfit is. The ... • 11. Raskolikov's Theory In Crime And Punishment Dostoevsky's novel Crime and Punishment analyzes a provocative theory constructed by the main character, Raskolnikov. His theory divides ordinary and extraordinary people. According to Raskolnikov, ordinary people have no opinion of their own, being just mere followers, while extraordinary people craft new opinions for the society. Extraordinary people are prone to greatness, being therefore justified to act in any way in order to achieve it, even if it means to kill or steal. An interesting example Raskolnikov makes is: "the lawgivers and founders of mankind, starting from the most ancient and going on to the Lycurguses, the Solons, the Muhammads, the Napoleons, and so forth, all of them to a man were criminals, from the fact alone that in ... Ironically, if Raskolnikov was not able to live up to his own theory and prove to be an extraordinary individual, Grenouille becomes one without realizing it. I will further on expand my argument by investigating Grenouille's motive, technique of conducting the killings and his relation to guilt. Grenouille's unique gift allows him to understand the world in a way that no one else can. He never forgets a scent by labeling them in his palace of odor and by constantly combining them in the most beautiful ways. Moreover, he knows that attraction is based on scent "... this scent will be ripened and take on a gravity that no one, man or woman, will be able to escape. People will be overwhelmed, disarmed, helpless before the magic of this girl, and they will not know why" (Suskind 171). Grenouille's motive of committing all those crimes is concentrated around a superior idea, a great one: creating the most extraordinary perfume in the world, a perfume that will allow him to rule mankind by combining the scents of the most exquisite ... However, it would be smarter to make their target a lot bigger. They could also include women who are older and instead of advertising the scent as youthful they could call it fresh and for everyone. If there was a change to change the product, a good choice would be to follow Calvin Klein's footsteps and change it to unisex. But in future it is good idea to create unisex product, because Calvin Klain customer reviews are very good, for example: "I decided to buy a bottle too in 95 and we went on vacation with 9 boys ages up to 18 Still smell the moments with sleepless nights ,parties, girls and a little bit of alcohol... and this was UniSEX! and we had a lot that time..." –(MrMookie, 12th September, 2013) "I love to wear this to work and you can easily share it with your wife." ... Although not traditionally thought of as a flower, the unopened flower buds of the clove are also commonly used. Notable exceptions include litsea cubeba, vanilla, and juniper berry. The most commonly used fruits yield their aromatics from the rind; they include citrus such as oranges, lemons, and limes. Although grapefruit rind is still used for aromatics, more and more commercially used grapefruit aromatics are artificially synthesized since the natural aromatic contains sulfur and its degradation product is quite unpleasant in smell. * Leaves and twigs: Commonly used for perfumery are lavender leaf, patchouli, sage, violets, rosemary, and citrus leaves. • 22. Perfume As A Critique Of Perfume An Analysis of Perfume as a Critique of Religion Perfume by Patrick Süskind follows Jean–Baptiste Grenouille through an incredible journey of survival, perseverance, and ascension to godlike power. It, being set during the Enlightenment, depicts a time where people let curiosity reign and science flourish. Nevertheless, although people were becoming more scientific in their thought, religion was still a part of people's lives. The presence of religious elements in the novel, however, serves to be more than just a descriptive tool to flesh out the world of the novel. Because of the biblical parallels that present Grenouille as a messiah–like figure, and also further comments on religion through narration, the reader is often pushed to consider the nature of faith and the faithful. In effect, Süskind uses Grenouille and the world of Perfume to examine and critique the functions and foundations of worshipping a god. One way the novel does so is by satirizing religion using sexual elements. In all major religions, sexuality is far removed from everything holy. This is especially true for Christian monks like Father Terrier. However, when Jeanne Bussie goes to him to give Grenouille back, he breathes in "the scent of milk and cheesy wool exuded by the wet nurse" (8) and finds it a "pleasant aroma" (8). Church representatives have pledged abstinence and are essentially the prime exemplar of sexual neutrality and purity, yet Father Terrier inhales the wet nurse's scent– an act ... For example, people who always read Newsweek are mostly people who are at work, who are economically stable, and who are interested in the world situation. On the other hand, the audiences of Shape are mostly young women who are interested in reducing their weights or shaping up. Also, the copies of "Splendor" fetch audiences' attention by appealing to their longing for romance and affections. The ad of "True Love" also appeals to sexuality by showing a woman with a drowsy expression in a lying down position. The second appeal I found is the need for autonomy, the need to credit the self. The three ads about women's suits, glassware, and make–up are great examples. An ad of women's suit has five women in five different gray suits who look competent. The catch phrase says, 'Let'em know who you are.' The other ad of glassware shows a beautiful white woman in a white blouse with glasses. She has her blond hair put up, and she is reading a paper. The copy on the upper left corner reads, 'Endless Possibilities.' The third ad of Maybelline's foundation cake also has a white woman wearing white blouse with her hair up. All of these three ads have women who look aspired, intellectual, and independent. These ads strike women's strong need to become the way they want, and to endorse themselves. These appeals are effective in persuading women to buy the products by giving women illusions that they will look 'sexy' or 'independent' just like the women in the ads if they buy the products. • 30. Perfume Analysis Of Perfume Perfume, by Suskind conforms to conventional standards of the horror genre. The author takes advantage of this conformity by making Grenouille into the typical horror genre killer or monster to produce a story with a chilling and dark atmosphere. The author effectively uses both characterization and stylistic features to develop and shape Grenouille's character into such monster. According to horror conventions a story must have a monster, whether it be a serial killer or supernatural entity "There is usually an element involving death. For example, a murderer, a ghostly presence." (Crouse 4). Grenouille's character can fit into the former of these two categories as a murder. Throughout the book he develops into a monster by taking several lives in many different settings. For instance his first kill involves the remorseless strangulation of a young girl in Paris "She was so frozen with terror at the sight of him that he had plenty of time to put his hands on her throat...keeping his eyes closed tight as he strangled her...When she laid dead he laid her on the ground." (suskind 42–43). Notice the description of Grenouille's first murder and the language the author uses to describe the agony the victim feels compared to the feelings of the main character. The victim is 'frozen in terror' while Grenouille has 'plenty of time to put his hand on her throat.' the victim dies 'she laid dead' and the way he handles the body 'laid her on the ground.'. Her eyes close, her deep breaths rise over the soundtrack, and it is clear that the fragrance has intoxicated her as if it were literally the substance of its namesake. Barthes' theories of mythology are explained through semiotics, which understands signifiers as images that stand in for other concepts, and the signified as what is replaced by signifier images. In his essay on Discipline and Punish, Foucault presents his idea of the panopticon mechanism, a mechanism in which visibility is a trap. With little importance over the actual individual in the role of the observer or of the observed, the object of the system is total power over the observed. Due to the unique shape of the panopticon, there are no corners and thus no blind spots for the observed to hide in. The private space is replaced by the public one. Furthermore, as final evidence of total control, the observed never knows for sure if they are being watched or not, as they can't see the observer (Foucault 200–205). Foucault further argues that this system is followed by any government institution, placing the society under permanent observation. So why does he have such mediocre characters and what is he trying to show though them. There is a lot going on in the picture, but I chose it because the day this was taken was a great day for me. The picture makes me feel happy, because the day was beautiful, fun, and full of funny things. My mother took us to the Outlets for school shopping. I enjoyed that because I like school shopping, even though I do not like the beginning of school. Bath and Body Works is my favorite store at the outlets because I love all the smells and colors. The smell of the candles reminds me of Thanksgiving, and pumpkin pie with cinnamon. Some of the pumpkin shaped candle holders feel almost like real pumpkins, even though I know they are made of Styrofoam or metal. When this picture was taken, it was the day before Labor Day, and there were a lot of people at Bath and Body Works trying to catch a bargain. You can also see many fall decorations in the picture. There are artificial leaves hanging in the right corner of the picture. The leaves look like they could be a part of a real tree. They are in mid transition between green and colors like brown and red. Like I have previously mentioned, there are a substantial amount of pumpkins in the picture that make you think of fall. • 62. The Shift Of Perfume Analysis of the shifts of Grenouille in Patrick Süskind's Perfume In Perfume, Patrick Süskind writes about the life of an extraordinary boy named Grenouille in 18th– century France. The author presents the shifts of existential thinking of his main character throughout the book. The main purpose of living for Grenouille mirrors that of every other human being – to discover the world, with his exception of seeking only the scenting part of it. The series of events in the boy's life develop his character and the various goals he strives for: survival, odor education, perfume making, peace, own smell, smell extraction, and to die. Grenouille's birth is the start of his first ordeal. In order to survive, his first, primal instinct tells him to make a cry, not for sympathy and love, but cry for a life. Suskind uses a contrast to show how the neatly born baby brings "himself to people's attention and his mother to the gallow" (21). The miserable birth or the option of a "modest exit" do not affected the nearly mature decision of Grenouille to grab the opportunity of existing, "sparing the world a great deal of mischief" (21). However, if people actually paid attention to those advertisements the readers would find that they think some of the ads should not have been allowed. An ad for Miss Dior perfume was presented in a late issue of Vogue with a model who looks to be about twenty–four years old. The model has shoulder length blonde hair, a clear skin tone, and a facial expression that could be considered provocative. The model is naked and only covered by a dress that she holds up which still only covers a portion of her top, middle section, and private area. Despite this dress, her complete right leg, thigh, arm, neck, and shoulders are revealed. In the foreground is a Miss Dior perfume bottle with the words "Miss Dior and you, what would you do for love?". In Jean Kilbourne's Killing Us Softly 4, she states that advertisements often send certain messages about women. Kilbourne claims that unrealistic ideas of women are often proposed within ads, such as symbolizing women as objects and not people, or even the idea that if you are not beautiful, then you are nothing. Using classical mythology as a foundation, and, in particular, providing a loose adaptation of The Odyssey by Homer, Robbins updates and modifies characters and concepts in an effort to reinforce the importance of the journey of life and the discovery of self. Like the ancient myth–makers, Robbins commands the reader's attention with outrageous situations and events while at the same time providing characters that the reader can relate to and learn from. Furthermore, the beet as "the grounded moon–boat" calls to mind Odysseus's various nautical incidents and accidents (1). This discourse is chapter one of four brief chapters that introduce the modern–day characters, much as Homer begins his epic with the four books that acquaint us with the people and the situation in Ithica. Each work is told retrospectively by a third–person omniscient narrator, and the adventures of Alobar and Kudra are relayed primarily through flashbacks, much as the story of Odysseus is told. Homer's use of Athena as a character whose presence permeates and drives the action of the epic is mirrored, albeit perversely, by Robbins' use of the beet as a similar "character," an entity that permeates and affects the lives of the characters in the book. The novel, as does the epic, ends with all the primary characters coming together to effect a satisfying conclusion. A key to understanding his writing, says author Tom Robbins, is a knowledge of Greek myth. A particular influence on him is the life and work of Joseph Campbell, author of several books on mythology (Hoyser and Stookey 9). Campbell, in turn, owes influence to the insights of analytic psychologist Carl Jung. Jung recognized the patterns within myths ––– throughout the world and across all cultures –– of characters, situations, and events, and identified these recurring images as archetypes (Harris and Platzner 40). • 77. Perfume : Perfume And The Nature Of Perfume Perfume and the Nature of Evil The life of Jean Baptiste Grenouille in Perfume shows that one can be born inherently evil and that not all evil is learned. Perfume by Patrick Suskind although fictional still gives an exceptional look into the mind and the making of a murder. The book has an array of examples that prove Grenouille was born evil from his unusual sense of smell to his lack thereof a scent. When looking closer Perfume has many other displays of his inherently born evil. Jean Baptiste was born under unusual circumstances and showed odd behavior, not long after his birth. Jean Baptiste's first perceived acts of greed began right after birth: The infant under the gutting table begins to squall. As prescribed by law, they give it to a wet nurse and arrest the mother. She is tried and found guilty of multiple infanticide, a few weeks later decapitated. By this time the child has already changed wet nurses three times. No one wanted to keep it for more than a couple of days. It was too greedy, they said, sucked as much as two babies(Suskind 6). In truth, Jean Baptiste Grenouille always did what he needed to survive even as a baby. Right from birth, he displayed his greed by screeching out as his mother left him for dead. This act could be seen as a normal display from a baby, but Grenouille was no normal baby. He laid presumably silent while his mother was unconscious and a crowd formed around her. When she awoke and tried to abandon him, which lead Grenouille to scream. She willingly and admittedly left multiple babies to their death without a single display of emotion. It can be said that Grenouille's emotional disconnect, selfishness, and greed could have been inherited from his mother. Other signs that point to him being an abnormal baby were his eating habits. He was shifted from wet nurse to wet nurse because of his greed until he ended up at Madame Gaillard's. "The young Grenouille was such a tick. He lived encapsulated in himself and waited for better times. He gave the world nothing but his dung – no smile, no cry, no glimmer in the eye, not even his own scent" (23). • 79. The Effect Of Cologne On The Body The Effects of Cologne Can the way a man smells actually affect his life? Can buying expensive cologne give him more confidence or make him irresistible? Cologne advertisers would certainly seem to think so. In truth, scents can affect an individual in different ways. Certain scents can have particular effects on the body, and they can actually alter the way a person behaves or perceives himself. Scents that work positively with a man's body chemistry can actually change the way he acts or thinks. However, when cologne ads promise men that they will be handsome, successful, powerful, and talented because of the scents they wear, the industry begins to sell them fantasy rather than reality. Advertisements for cologne are very unique. Cologne ads usually portray a message that says "wearing this will make you attractive" or "you will be more powerful by wearing this cologne." Most of these advertisements feature men, since men are their target audience. However, some other advertisements feature women, since women sometimes buy cologne for men as a gift. Some advertisements, like this one, feature celebrities. Having a good–looking celebrity, such as James Franco, draws in the attention of viewers.
