Bang The Drum Slowly Analysis
Bang the Drum Slowly Bang the Drum Slowly tells the story of players "Author" Henry Wiggen and
Bruce Pearson's relationship on and off the field during their season with the New York Mammoths.
The book portrays two main characters; an innocent Pearson, who is struggling playing ball and is
also fighting for his life with Hodgkin's disease, and the witty and smart Henry Wiggen who chooses
to stand by his friend's side and help him create a memorable last season. Throughout this paper I
will be exploring the meaning of Mark Harris's book and whether or not it is important to continue
teaching this book to future students. During the scene where Pearson is lying in bed sick not
thinking he was going to make it through the night with Wiggen

The Bride of Frankenstein Essay
The Bride of Frankenstein
A horror film is a film dominated by elements of horror. This film genre underestimates a number of
sub–genres and repeated themes, such as slashed themes, vampire. Horror films are designed to
frighten and panic that cause dread and alarm within our hearts, and to invoke our hidden worst
fears, often in a terrifying and shocking endings at the same time entertaining us with excitement
and therapeutic experience. Most horror films are designed to show the dark side of life, the
forbidden and strange events that take place within the society and our lives. Moreover they deal
with our most primal nature and its fears: our nightmares. Some horror films exhibit a substantial ...

It was voted the film of the year by the 'New York Times'. Universal not only produced The Bride of
Frankenstein but also 'Dracula', 'The Mummy', and 'The Murders in the Rue Morgue' which were all
released during the depression of the 1930's. It was argued and believed that the reason for
introducing these horror films seemed that the audiences from that period of time wanted to see
escapist's films which made them forget the real everyday worries. Even though 1,300 banks closed
and over 25,000 businesses failed in the USA which was a very bad thing not only for the US but
also Europesuffered during that time. Moreover this did not stop the people from going to cinemas
and see films, even though they did not have enough money, they still managed to see the films they
wanted so that they could escape the bad life they were in. As a result of this the Hollywood film
industry made 90 million dollars in paid admission week. The universal horror films were on top of
the list compared to the rest.

Just Therapy By Dulwish Center: Article Analysis
The newsletter published by the Dulwish Centre explores the concept of Just Therapy in an
application to family therapy. Primarily, this article examines the social injustice around the
indigenous Maori people of New Zealand. The therapeutic approach considers elements of gender,
culture, social, and economic attributes, in contrast to Western methods which tend to dismiss these
qualities. In regards to personal practice, the article is valuable for a future desire to work with the

Little Miss Sunshine Essay
Little Miss Sunshine – Essay Little Miss Sunshine directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, is
about a family whose cross country journey to the Little Miss Sunshine child beauty pageant teaches
them, and the viewer, that real life is about relationships and that these are more important than
simplistic notions of winning or losing. Richard Hoover is the character who most exemplifies this
message as he eventually recognises that his family and life cannot be defined by his 'Refuse to
Lose' motivational programme. At the beginning of the movie we are shown an opening sequence
introducing the main characters in the movie. We are briefly introduced to each character's situation
and the goals they are trying to achieve but we soon ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As they are travelling Richard gets a phone call from Stan Grossman, a business man he made a deal
with so he can earn something from his motivational programme. Richard loses him so he stops over
at a petrol station and calls him. Richard is excited at first but his facial expressions change
drastically, Richard finds out that he isn't successful with his programme and that he didn't get the
deal. This comes as a shock to Richard as he tried really hard with his programme. In the bus Edwin
goes to Richard and tells him that he is proud of him. The camera cuts to a two shot of Edwin and
Richard, this shows that Richard and Edwin connect and start to unite. This is also emphasized by
violins and cellos playing a sombre tune in the background. They stop over at a motel to spend the
night, Richard and Sheryl start arguing about what their problems and they didn't get any money
from the deal. Richard decided to go to Scottsdale and meet up with Stan Grossman, we see Richard
trying to push the bus all by himself. This shows us the obstacles Richard is facing, this is also
emphasized by the background music which sounds like slow carnival music which reminds us of a
sad clown. As Richard is traveling on the highway he looks small and ridiculous travelling on a
small scooter on a huge highway, he doesn't fit in the picture. A sign on the road says Scottsdale 23

Little Miss Sunshine Analysis
Little Miss Sunshine Essay
Maia Falkner
'Little Miss Sunshine', is a film directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris. This film is about a
girl named Olive (played by Abigail Breslin) and her family, on their physical and emotional
journey to a beauty pageant in California. In the film 'Little Miss Sunshine' the important settings
that helped me understand an idea was, backstage the beauty pageant, onstage the beauty pageant
and a contrasting scene on the wharf. These three scenes helped me understand the idea of society's
unrealistic false standards and the intense judgement of those that fall beneath these standards. The
settings backstage and on–stage the beauty pageant portray the idea that in order to obtain "beauty",
extreme lengths must be taken. In this setting young girls are stripped of their identity and
objectified. The falseness of the makeup and spray tan automatically creates an air of self–doubt and
pressure to reach this unreachable perception of "beauty". The setting on the wharf contrasts with
the falseness of the pageant and exposes the idea that judgement is all throughout life and somewhat
inescapable, that essentially life is one big beauty contest.
The first setting that portrays the idea of society's unrealistic standards is backstage at the Little
Miss Sunshine beauty pageant. This setting portrays this idea by showing us an environment in
which the falseness is almost overbearing. The hotel in which the pageant takes place is filled with
young girls being pampered by their mothers, spray tan, absurd amounts of makeup and over the top
costumes. These all represent this terribly false perception of beauty and objectify these young girls.
A downward, mid–shot of a girl getting her legs spray–tanned by her mother describes the distorted
reality of this situation. The girl's face is out of the shot which is objectifying her and taking away
her the identity. This is followed by a wide shot of Olive and Sheryl walking through the room
showing products and clothes. In this shot, we see a huge contrast between the materialistic setting
and the naturalness of Sheryl and Olive with their ordinary clothes, natural hair, and pale skin. The
mise–en–scene of the hotel lobby reinforces the

Little Miss Sunshine Stereotypes
Little Miss Sunshine When we think about beauty pageants, we think about beautifully tanned girls
with beautiful glittery makeup, a perfect physique and teeth to match, extravagant glitzy dresses,
over the top hair, and not to add someone with an extraordinary talent. However, the iconic film
Little Miss Sunshine completely shatters that stereotypical view that we have of the pageant as well
as changes our view on how families function. Little Miss Sunshine is a film about an 8 year old girl
named Olive Hoover, who is obsessed with being in pageants and is looking to become the next

One moral is that you should never give up on yourself and never give up no matter how turbulent
things may get. This moral was exercised in many scenes throughout the entire film such as in the
beginning of the film we see Richard giving a motivational speech to a sparse group of people, the
message being to never give up. When he comes home for dinner he gives everyone at family dinner
a speech on how it is a dreadful thing to be a loser. Before they set off to Redondo Beach he also
asks Olive if she thinks she will be able to win the competition because if she doesn't have any faith
in herself they may as well not even waste time traveling to the pageant. The film conveys this
message in a comical way (the breaks not working on the car, Frank running into his ex while
buying porn, and the family bickering) as well as in an emotional way such as when Grandpa Edwin
passes away and Dwayne finding out that he is color–blind. The mixing of these two elements
(comedy and evoking sadness) in my opinion make the genre of this film a dark comedy or it could
just be classified as a comedy–drama. Going off of that, the film shows that being a winner doesn't
just mean being the best at something. Olive was poised to be the underdog for the entire film. We,
the viewers as well as Olive's family knew that Olive wasn't comparable to her competition,
however, Olive did not let that stop her and she continued her routine

The Era Of The Industrial Revolution
When the Industrial Revolution started, it resulted in the world changing at a high pace. So, the
people started to desire a simpler, and a more stable time. That's when the revival of ancient
architecture started to form. Each type of revival style was associated with a specific architect, for
instance, A.W.N. Pugin was England's leading Gothic revivalist. The revivals of the ancient
architecture influenced the architectural designs of many architects of the time. Two of the most
noted architects in the nineteenth century who were influenced by the architectural revivals were:
Richard Morris Hunt, the leading architect to the Beaux Art style; and Henry Hobson Richardson,
the father of the Richardsonian Romanesque architecture. The ... Show more content on

Its style combined classical ideas from the ancient Greek, Roman, and Romanesque architecture and
deployed their ideas into its architecture (Carven, 7/27/2016). The Beaux's Art style influenced
architecture between 1880 and 1920, but its popularity ended with economic hardships from the
great depression. Beaux Arts style emphasized the classical forms and features by showing elaborate
details while having heavy masonry, and massive plans. The Beaux Arts displayed elaborate details
by integrating sculpture that was influenced by the Baroque and Rococo styles. It also had classical
details such as pilasters, balustrades, and garlands. It was highly ornamented to the point that an
elaborately decorated surface with little areas left unornamented became the hallmark for the Beaux
Arts style (Architectural style of America, n.d.). Also, the Beaux Arts style is symmetrical because it
was influenced by the ancient Greek revival. Columns, arches, vaults, and domes were all elements
of the Beaux Arts. They used all of these elements and characteristics to try and imitate the
European Aristocracy houses. Beaux Arts main clients were the "would be American aristocrats"
who have accumulated a massive amount of wealth throughout one or two generations. His main
clients had to be the super wealthy people of the time because the Beaux Arts style of architecture
had massive plans and heavy masonry, which means that his clients should be

Trick Or Treaty By Alanis Obomsawin Sparknotes
Trick or Treaty? is a 2014 Canadian documentary film by Alanis Obomsawin that details into the
difficult history of Treaty Number 9, the infamous 1905 agreement in which First Nations
communities lost sovereignty over their traditional lands. The title Trick or Treaty? asks the question
of whether the Cree and Ojibway people were lied to in order to obtain the necessary signatures to
steal their land. Obomsawin demonstrates this by placing significant focus on the way the treaty was
interpreted by First Nations peoples and the Canadian government while exploring the discrepancies
between two versions of the treaty: the written version and the oral version. The documentary also

As suicide rates rise and thousands of Indigenous women are added to the list of missing or
unsolved murder cases, many First Nations people are reaching a tipping point. When the Canadian
Government introduced the omnibus Bill C–45 in 2012, First Nations resentment flared even more.
This federal budget bill included changes to land management on reserves that diminished the
authority of First Nations without their any of their consultations. Unsatisfied with the federal
government's refusal to answer ongoing demands and no longer willing to let their cries of injustice
go unheard, they take to the streets and other forms of protest in their Idle No More movement.
Obomsawin's footage begins with Attawapiskat Chief Theresa Spence's six–week hunger strike in
2013 to protest the situation. She is not starving herself in hopes of instant punishment or profit, but
desires to evoke a sit–down meeting between Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Governor
General David Johnston, and the First Nations leaders. From a tipi on Victoria Island, she hoped to
focus the attention of Canadians on the living conditions of First Nations, the inequalities affecting
them, the rights they were demanding and their concerns about the federal bill that has been
introduced. In this context, a hunger

20th Century Imperialism
During the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, industrializing countries such as France and
the United States began expanding their influence to places around the globe. People of many
different backgrounds answered the idea of imperialism with both praise and criticism. Some works
commended imperialism such as "Speech to the French National Assembly" by Jules Ferry and "The
White Man's Burden" by Rudyard Kipling. Other sources reprimanded the process, including works
such as Imperialism by J.A. Hobson and "Home Burdens of Uncle Sam" by Anna Manning
Comfort. Each author articulates the variety of justifications within their pieces, exploring the
repercussions of the aggressive influence of political and economic expansion across the globe. In
doing so, it is apparent that there are many facets to how people in the early twentieth century
approached the idea of imperialism.
Kipling, favoring imperialism, wrote his poem as an invitation to colonize the Philippines after the
rule of the Spanish ended. During this period, Europeans held the belief that they were above the
indigenous people of Africa and Asia. He describes the native people as "new–caught, sullen
peoples, / Half–devil and half–child", implying that they are inferior breed of people. (Kipling,1) He
devalues the life of these people with an underlying principle of Social Darwinism, where the
"unfit" needs to become more advanced to compete in the Western world. Kipling then goes on to
say that the "White

Little Miss Sunshine – Grandpa Edwin Hoover
Very determined, a family goes beyond what they can afford to support their young daughter in a
beauty pageant. "Little Miss Sunshine" was directed by Jonathan Payton and Valerie Faris. Little
Miss Sunshine is a comedy and drama movie which is 110 minutes long. It was released in 2006.
This family each have their own definition of what it means and cost to be a winner. Grandpa Edwin
Hoover, in this movie, is who will be discussed in this small essay. Informing how will Edwin be
helped to become a better role model.
Olive Hoover, Dwayne Hoover, Frank Ginsburg, Richard Hoover, Sheryl Hoover, and Edwin
Hoover, a dysfunctional family of six, hurry to the beauty pageant of 7 years old, Olive, at last
minute. Olive has to learn from her dysfunctional family. Sheryl, reasonably sane, is the mom,
Richard, unsuccessful motivational speaker, is the dad, Frank Ginsburg, tried to kill himself, is the
uncle, Dewayne, have not spoken in 9 months, is the brother, and again Edwin, bad role model, is
the grandfather. The family trip was very risky. The family travel from Albuquerque to California in
a VW camper van that does not start until the van moving hoping Olive become Little Miss
Sunshine with her grandpa training.
Grandpa Edwin Hoover is in desperate need of a therapy assistance. Edwin thoughts on everything
are as if there is no wrong. He taught Olive an inappropriate dance for finals. He snorts heroin. He
does not care what he says and he uses bad language all the time. He served in WWll and now he is
a single man which was kicked out of the retirement home for drugs and sleeping around. His
philosophy is "you'd have to be crazy to do smack when you're young, but when you get old, you'd
be crazy not to". One positive advice he gave to Olive is, " A real loser isn't someone who doesn't
win. A real loser is someone who is afraid of not winning and don't even try".
Edwin's microsystem is his family. His family is not perfect, but they try to tell him right from
wrong, but he does not listen. He does not feel the need to censor himself or impress anyone
anymore. My overall response to Edwin's behavior will

Declaration Of The Independence Of New Zealand Essay

Declaration of the Independence of NZ
1) I chose the Declaration of the Independence of New Zealand because of it has great significance.
New Zealand declared its independency from the United Kingdom on the 28th of October 1835 in
Waitangi. It was James Busby, with the help of missionary Henry Williams and William Colenso,
who then prepared a statement to give the northern Maori chiefs to sign after there were rumours
that the United States or France were thinking of claiming New Zealand as their own. The
statement's purpose was to recognise the independency and sovereignty of the New Zealand Maori
tribes. The sketch statement that was signed was written in Maori, but another English translation
was prepared as well.
2) I will be talking about James Busby who played a major role in making New Zealand's
independency possible. James Busby was born in Scotland on the 7th of February 1802. He studied
viticulture in France. After that he moved to Australia. After staying there for a couple of years,
Busby moved with his family to New Zealand after presenting his viticulture journals that he
published and were considered as New Zealand memoir. That granted him an appointment with the
Colonial Office after he presented his work. Then Busty was appointed on March 1832 a New
Zealand British Resident. He arrived to the Bay of Islands on May 1833 and then settled in
Waitangi. Busby's major purpose was to manage and look after the

In Hate List, Jessica's feelings of lack of control over her social life are masked by her confident
public persona. What Jessica desires is to be in control and she sees an opportunity to achieve this
within the popular group of Garvin High School. Jessica earns her position within her clique by
being demanding. She scrutinizes students at school, and her dominant demeanor gives her control
over the behaviour of her peers. Although Jessica plays her part exceptionally well, Valerie is able to
see through the facade. During a conversation between Jessica and Val, Val gets a glimpse into
Jessica's private persona saying, "The confidence was gone, the superiority was missing – all
replaced by this weird vulnerability that didn't look right on her," (Brown 215). When Jessica's
public persona is stripped away, she is vulnerable. What Jessica desires is control, and without it she
feels just as insignificant as those she picks on. By developing a public persona of a confident
teenager, Jessica hides her own insecurities, and controls the lives of people around her. Both Alex
and Jessica desire a sense of control in their lives, so they create a confident, outspoken public
persona that allows them to achieve their desire. Without their public persona, both Alex and Jessica

Who Is The Famous Valerie Solanas?
Who is the infamous Valerie Solanas? Valerie Solanas was a radical feminist who hated the male
sex. American Horror story does a decent job on portraying her but also changes the truth a bit. In
the episode, we see two main characters, Andy Warhol and Valerie Solanas. Andy Warhol was an
American producer, artist, and director who was a famous. That's where Valerie comes in. She had
written a piece and wanted Andy to produce it, but it didn't turn out how she planned. Andy thought
her writing was obnoxious and not good, and ended up losing it. This infuriated Solanas and she
shot him, but didn't kill him. She then started gathering people to join her radical group to go hunt
and eliminate men. She would read parts of the Scum Manifesto which she wrote. She would read
parts of her piece to the people in the group which motivated them to follow her and do as she said.
They committed many crimes some being killing innocent people that were males for no reason. She
wanted to scare the public and the male race with all the brutality they left behind for people to see.
During the same time, the Zodiac Killer was doing his own thing. Solanas then tried to take credit
and say she was the Zodiac Killer but no one believed her, so once again she got mad again since
"No one took the female race seriously." This is how AHS portrait Solanas and tweaked some details
to make it go along with what Kai Andersons needed and was doing.
There were many things that caught my attention in the show American Horror Story. Some of these
being, did some of the things mentioned actually happen some being; Solanas shooting Warhol, the
Scum Manifesto, and the Zodiac Killer. I thought they were to extreme to be true, and that they had
to have been made up. How can a female group want to eliminate the whole male race, and say they
are inferior and suck. I want to find out the actual relationship between solanas and Warhol and how
did AHS change and tweak facts to make it fit into what they wanted?

We Didn't Start the Fire
Society has been molded by a variety of influences upon it. Looking back in time, society has
changed drastically within the recent years, and continues to change as time moves forward. Time
creates history, and history is the recording of events that have brought an impact upon society. In
the year of nineteen eighty–nine, Billy Joel, a musician, released the song, "We Didn't Start The

time period those events happened. The musician put forty years of history into a song, starting from

The Berlin Wall had a major impact on humanity's views on how society should be ruled. Berlin is
the capital of Germany. After the ending of WWII, Berlin was split up into East Berlin, and West

Berlin had a better lifestyle, and had financial aid from the United States. From the years between
nineteen forty–nine to nineteen sixty–one, approximately 2.5 million people from East Berlin
escaped to West Berlin. This toll included skilled workers, professionals, and intellectuals. Because
of the loss of these people, the economy in East Berlin was threatened. On August twelve–thirteen,
nineteen sixty–one, the Berlin was built in order to stop the people of East Berlin from fleeing. The
Berlin wall was a major point during the Cold War, and many opposed it. It gave another reason to

Negative Effects Of Imperialism
Imperialism was an extremely big deal throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. There
were many occurrences where people who were involved in imperialism would succeed, but there
were also failures. Throughout this time period, powers from Europe, the United States and Japan all
contributed to both the positive and negative impacts of imperialism. These impacts affected parts of
Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Some of the few people that made huge changes during the "Age
of Imperialism" are Dadabha Naoroji, J.A. Hobson, Mary Kingsley, Edgar Canisius, Albert
Beveridge, and Rudyard Kipling.
Dadabha Naoroji was involved in many things but one of the most important was that he was a
founder of the Indian National Congress. The Indian National Congress was a political organization
that led efforts for independence and is a major political platform in India. During Naoroji's
involvement in politics, he became the first Indian member of the House of Commons. While in
office, Naoroji attempted to improve Britain's policies toward India and eventually succeeded. He
wanted many things for the British rule such as the abolition of practicing widow–burning, to
emphasize the importance of education, and he also wanted the development of railways and
irrigation. Naoroji goes on to say that he succeeded in almost all of these things and that the British
accepted them, making the impact of imperialism positive. In this situation, the colonizer and the
colonized both

American, Little Miss Sunshine, By Jonathan Dayton And...
American Sunshine
The American Dream has been redefined through different eras of the United States. At its most
optimistic, the American Dream is about having the freedom and opportunity to do and be whatever
one chooses, the success stemming from one's achievement of individuality. But the influences of
capitalistic ideals in the United States have shifted the common definition and instead of optimism
the American Dream is now defined in more cynical terms of upward mobility and wealth. UK
director Andrea Arnold's 2016 film American Honey about a young woman who joins a roaming
magazine crew critiques the American Dream through the lens of this cynicism. Conversely, the

"Rather than facing against the discomforts of the working class grind, they seem to be complacent
in their existence of freewheeling abandon" (Madden 2016).
In addition to the importance that is placed on money and wealth, the central theme of Arnold's film
lies in the interactions–more accurately transactions– between the crew and the people they meet.
"These kids are supposedly selling magazines, but really they are selling themselves. That feels very
American. So the environment in the bus is like a potted version of the bigger picture" (Class
Notes). As the film progresses the lines that define what Star will and won't do for money become
more blurred as she begins to lose herself to Arnold's American dream–a fantasy born out of
hardship. The importance of wealth is equally reflected in moments of Little Miss Sunshine. Plane
tickets are unaffordable, so the entire Hoover family is forced to drive to California for the daughter
Olive's competition because "they cannot in good conscious leave behind any of their number,
however much they'd like to separate" (Klawans, p.42). When they make a stop at a restaurant each
of the family members must order something from the menu under four dollars, another testament to
the realism of their financial means. While wealth is not the central point of Dayton and Faris' film,
the moments that are shaped by wealth resonate with the primary ideology of success in Little Miss
Sunshine. To be

Bang The Drum Slowly Analysis

  • 1. Bang The Drum Slowly Analysis Bang the Drum Slowly Bang the Drum Slowly tells the story of players "Author" Henry Wiggen and Bruce Pearson's relationship on and off the field during their season with the New York Mammoths. The book portrays two main characters; an innocent Pearson, who is struggling playing ball and is also fighting for his life with Hodgkin's disease, and the witty and smart Henry Wiggen who chooses to stand by his friend's side and help him create a memorable last season. Throughout this paper I will be exploring the meaning of Mark Harris's book and whether or not it is important to continue teaching this book to future students. This film genre underestimates a number of sub–genres and repeated themes, such as slashed themes, vampire. Horror films are designed to frighten and panic that cause dread and alarm within our hearts, and to invoke our hidden worst fears, often in a terrifying and shocking endings at the same time entertaining us with excitement and therapeutic experience. Most horror films are designed to show the dark side of life, the forbidden and strange events that take place within the society and our lives. Moreover they deal with our most primal nature and its fears: our nightmares. Some horror films exhibit a substantial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was voted the film of the year by the 'New York Times'. Universal not only produced The Bride of Frankenstein but also 'Dracula', 'The Mummy', and 'The Murders in the Rue Morgue' which were all released during the depression of the 1930's. It was argued and believed that the reason for introducing these horror films seemed that the audiences from that period of time wanted to see escapist's films which made them forget the real everyday worries. Even though 1,300 banks closed and over 25,000 businesses failed in the USA which was a very bad thing not only for the US but also Europesuffered during that time. Moreover this did not stop the people from going to cinemas and see films, even though they did not have enough money, they still managed to see the films they wanted so that they could escape the bad life they were in. As a result of this the Hollywood film industry made 90 million dollars in paid admission week. The universal horror films were on top of the list compared to the rest. • 3. Just Therapy By Dulwish Center: Article Analysis The newsletter published by the Dulwish Centre explores the concept of Just Therapy in an application to family therapy. Primarily, this article examines the social injustice around the indigenous Maori people of New Zealand. The therapeutic approach considers elements of gender, culture, social, and economic attributes, in contrast to Western methods which tend to dismiss these qualities. In regards to personal practice, the article is valuable for a future desire to work with the indigenous peoples of Canada. Much like the treaty of Witangi, the Metis people of Manitoba signed land agreements without proper translation and lost land in addition to cultural heritage. • 4. Little Miss Sunshine Essay Little Miss Sunshine – Essay Little Miss Sunshine directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris, is about a family whose cross country journey to the Little Miss Sunshine child beauty pageant teaches them, and the viewer, that real life is about relationships and that these are more important than simplistic notions of winning or losing. Richard Hoover is the character who most exemplifies this message as he eventually recognises that his family and life cannot be defined by his 'Refuse to Lose' motivational programme. At the beginning of the movie we are shown an opening sequence introducing the main characters in the movie. We are briefly introduced to each character's situation and the goals they are trying to achieve but we soon ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As they are travelling Richard gets a phone call from Stan Grossman, a business man he made a deal with so he can earn something from his motivational programme. Richard loses him so he stops over at a petrol station and calls him. Richard is excited at first but his facial expressions change drastically, Richard finds out that he isn't successful with his programme and that he didn't get the deal. This comes as a shock to Richard as he tried really hard with his programme. In the bus Edwin goes to Richard and tells him that he is proud of him. The camera cuts to a two shot of Edwin and Richard, this shows that Richard and Edwin connect and start to unite. This is also emphasized by violins and cellos playing a sombre tune in the background. They stop over at a motel to spend the night, Richard and Sheryl start arguing about what their problems and they didn't get any money from the deal. Richard decided to go to Scottsdale and meet up with Stan Grossman, we see Richard trying to push the bus all by himself. This shows us the obstacles Richard is facing, this is also emphasized by the background music which sounds like slow carnival music which reminds us of a sad clown. As Richard is traveling on the highway he looks small and ridiculous travelling on a small scooter on a huge highway, he doesn't fit in the picture. A sign on the road says Scottsdale 23 miles; this again shows the obstacles that Richard has to face by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Little Miss Sunshine Analysis Little Miss Sunshine Essay Maia Falkner 'Little Miss Sunshine', is a film directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris. This film is about a girl named Olive (played by Abigail Breslin) and her family, on their physical and emotional journey to a beauty pageant in California. In the film 'Little Miss Sunshine' the important settings that helped me understand an idea was, backstage the beauty pageant, onstage the beauty pageant and a contrasting scene on the wharf. These three scenes helped me understand the idea of society's unrealistic false standards and the intense judgement of those that fall beneath these standards. The settings backstage and on–stage the beauty pageant portray the idea that in order to obtain "beauty", extreme lengths must be taken. In this setting young girls are stripped of their identity and objectified. The falseness of the makeup and spray tan automatically creates an air of self–doubt and pressure to reach this unreachable perception of "beauty". The setting on the wharf contrasts with the falseness of the pageant and exposes the idea that judgement is all throughout life and somewhat inescapable, that essentially life is one big beauty contest. The first setting that portrays the idea of society's unrealistic standards is backstage at the Little Miss Sunshine beauty pageant. This setting portrays this idea by showing us an environment in which the falseness is almost overbearing. The hotel in which the pageant takes place is filled with young girls being pampered by their mothers, spray tan, absurd amounts of makeup and over the top costumes. These all represent this terribly false perception of beauty and objectify these young girls. A downward, mid–shot of a girl getting her legs spray–tanned by her mother describes the distorted reality of this situation. The girl's face is out of the shot which is objectifying her and taking away her the identity. This is followed by a wide shot of Olive and Sheryl walking through the room showing products and clothes. In this shot, we see a huge contrast between the materialistic setting and the naturalness of Sheryl and Olive with their ordinary clothes, natural hair, and pale skin. The mise–en–scene of the hotel lobby reinforces the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Little Miss Sunshine Stereotypes Little Miss Sunshine When we think about beauty pageants, we think about beautifully tanned girls with beautiful glittery makeup, a perfect physique and teeth to match, extravagant glitzy dresses, over the top hair, and not to add someone with an extraordinary talent. However, the iconic film Little Miss Sunshine completely shatters that stereotypical view that we have of the pageant as well as changes our view on how families function. Little Miss Sunshine is a film about an 8 year old girl named Olive Hoover, who is obsessed with being in pageants and is looking to become the next miss America, Olive gets the opportunity to participate in a national competition after the girl who was supposed to compete in her place has to drop out of the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One moral is that you should never give up on yourself and never give up no matter how turbulent things may get. This moral was exercised in many scenes throughout the entire film such as in the beginning of the film we see Richard giving a motivational speech to a sparse group of people, the message being to never give up. When he comes home for dinner he gives everyone at family dinner a speech on how it is a dreadful thing to be a loser. Before they set off to Redondo Beach he also asks Olive if she thinks she will be able to win the competition because if she doesn't have any faith in herself they may as well not even waste time traveling to the pageant. The film conveys this message in a comical way (the breaks not working on the car, Frank running into his ex while buying porn, and the family bickering) as well as in an emotional way such as when Grandpa Edwin passes away and Dwayne finding out that he is color–blind. The mixing of these two elements (comedy and evoking sadness) in my opinion make the genre of this film a dark comedy or it could just be classified as a comedy–drama. Going off of that, the film shows that being a winner doesn't just mean being the best at something. Olive was poised to be the underdog for the entire film. We, the viewers as well as Olive's family knew that Olive wasn't comparable to her competition, however, Olive did not let that stop her and she continued her routine ... • 7. The Era Of The Industrial Revolution When the Industrial Revolution started, it resulted in the world changing at a high pace. So, the people started to desire a simpler, and a more stable time. That's when the revival of ancient architecture started to form. Each type of revival style was associated with a specific architect, for instance, A.W.N. Pugin was England's leading Gothic revivalist. The revivals of the ancient architecture influenced the architectural designs of many architects of the time. Two of the most noted architects in the nineteenth century who were influenced by the architectural revivals were: Richard Morris Hunt, the leading architect to the Beaux Art style; and Henry Hobson Richardson, the father of the Richardsonian Romanesque architecture. Its style combined classical ideas from the ancient Greek, Roman, and Romanesque architecture and deployed their ideas into its architecture (Carven, 7/27/2016). The Beaux's Art style influenced architecture between 1880 and 1920, but its popularity ended with economic hardships from the great depression. Beaux Arts style emphasized the classical forms and features by showing elaborate details while having heavy masonry, and massive plans. The Beaux Arts displayed elaborate details by integrating sculpture that was influenced by the Baroque and Rococo styles. It also had classical details such as pilasters, balustrades, and garlands. It was highly ornamented to the point that an elaborately decorated surface with little areas left unornamented became the hallmark for the Beaux Arts style (Architectural style of America, n.d.). Also, the Beaux Arts style is symmetrical because it was influenced by the ancient Greek revival. Columns, arches, vaults, and domes were all elements of the Beaux Arts. They used all of these elements and characteristics to try and imitate the European Aristocracy houses. Beaux Arts main clients were the "would be American aristocrats" who have accumulated a massive amount of wealth throughout one or two generations. Trick Or Treaty By Alanis Obomsawin Sparknotes Trick or Treaty? is a 2014 Canadian documentary film by Alanis Obomsawin that details into the difficult history of Treaty Number 9, the infamous 1905 agreement in which First Nations communities lost sovereignty over their traditional lands. The title Trick or Treaty? asks the question of whether the Cree and Ojibway people were lied to in order to obtain the necessary signatures to steal their land. Obomsawin demonstrates this by placing significant focus on the way the treaty was interpreted by First Nations peoples and the Canadian government while exploring the discrepancies between two versions of the treaty: the written version and the oral version. As suicide rates rise and thousands of Indigenous women are added to the list of missing or unsolved murder cases, many First Nations people are reaching a tipping point. When the Canadian Government introduced the omnibus Bill C–45 in 2012, First Nations resentment flared even more. This federal budget bill included changes to land management on reserves that diminished the authority of First Nations without their any of their consultations. Unsatisfied with the federal government's refusal to answer ongoing demands and no longer willing to let their cries of injustice go unheard, they take to the streets and other forms of protest in their Idle No More movement. Obomsawin's footage begins with Attawapiskat Chief Theresa Spence's six–week hunger strike in 2013 to protest the situation. She is not starving herself in hopes of instant punishment or profit, but desires to evoke a sit–down meeting between Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Governor General David Johnston, and the First Nations leaders. • 9. 20th Century Imperialism During the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, industrializing countries such as France and the United States began expanding their influence to places around the globe. People of many different backgrounds answered the idea of imperialism with both praise and criticism. Some works commended imperialism such as "Speech to the French National Assembly" by Jules Ferry and "The White Man's Burden" by Rudyard Kipling. Other sources reprimanded the process, including works such as Imperialism by J.A. Hobson and "Home Burdens of Uncle Sam" by Anna Manning Comfort. Each author articulates the variety of justifications within their pieces, exploring the repercussions of the aggressive influence of political and economic expansion across the globe. In doing so, it is apparent that there are many facets to how people in the early twentieth century approached the idea of imperialism. Kipling, favoring imperialism, wrote his poem as an invitation to colonize the Philippines after the rule of the Spanish ended. During this period, Europeans held the belief that they were above the indigenous people of Africa and Asia. He describes the native people as "new–caught, sullen peoples, / Half–devil and half–child", implying that they are inferior breed of people. (Kipling,1) He devalues the life of these people with an underlying principle of Social Darwinism, where the "unfit" needs to become more advanced to compete in the Western world. Kipling then goes on to say that the "White ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Film Analysis : Little Miss Sunshine-Grandpa Edwin Hoover Krystal Alexander November 27, 2017 Film Analysis Professor Hunter Little Miss Sunshine – Grandpa Edwin Hoover Very determined, a family goes beyond what they can afford to support their young daughter in a beauty pageant. "Little Miss Sunshine" was directed by Jonathan Payton and Valerie Faris. Little Miss Sunshine is a comedy and drama movie which is 110 minutes long. It was released in 2006. This family each have their own definition of what it means and cost to be a winner. Grandpa Edwin Hoover, in this movie, is who will be discussed in this small essay. Informing how will Edwin be helped to become a better role model. Olive Hoover, Dwayne Hoover, Frank Ginsburg, Richard Hoover, Sheryl Hoover, and Edwin Hoover, a dysfunctional family of six, hurry to the beauty pageant of 7 years old, Olive, at last minute. Olive has to learn from her dysfunctional family. Sheryl, reasonably sane, is the mom, Richard, unsuccessful motivational speaker, is the dad, Frank Ginsburg, tried to kill himself, is the uncle, Dewayne, have not spoken in 9 months, is the brother, and again Edwin, bad role model, is the grandfather. The family trip was very risky. The family travel from Albuquerque to California in a VW camper van that does not start until the van moving hoping Olive become Little Miss Sunshine with her grandpa training. Grandpa Edwin Hoover is in desperate need of a therapy assistance. Edwin thoughts on everything are as if there is no wrong. He taught Olive an inappropriate dance for finals. He snorts heroin. He does not care what he says and he uses bad language all the time. He served in WWll and now he is a single man which was kicked out of the retirement home for drugs and sleeping around. His philosophy is "you'd have to be crazy to do smack when you're young, but when you get old, you'd be crazy not to". One positive advice he gave to Olive is, " A real loser isn't someone who doesn't win. A real loser is someone who is afraid of not winning and don't even try". Edwin's microsystem is his family. His family is not perfect, but they try to tell him right from wrong, but he does not listen. He does not feel the need to censor himself or impress anyone anymore. • 12. Declaration Of The Independence Of New Zealand Essay Name: Hamza Abutaleb Student ID: 2143918 First Event Declaration of the Independence of NZ 1) I chose the Declaration of the Independence of New Zealand because of it has great significance. New Zealand declared its independency from the United Kingdom on the 28th of October 1835 in Waitangi. It was James Busby, with the help of missionary Henry Williams and William Colenso, who then prepared a statement to give the northern Maori chiefs to sign after there were rumours that the United States or France were thinking of claiming New Zealand as their own. The statement's purpose was to recognise the independency and sovereignty of the New Zealand Maori tribes. The sketch statement that was signed was written in Maori, but another English translation was prepared as well. 2) I will be talking about James Busby who played a major role in making New Zealand's independency possible. James Busby was born in Scotland on the 7th of February 1802. He studied viticulture in France. After that he moved to Australia. After staying there for a couple of years, Busby moved with his family to New Zealand after presenting his viticulture journals that he published and were considered as New Zealand memoir. That granted him an appointment with the Colonial Office after he presented his work. Then Busty was appointed on March 1832 a New Zealand British Resident. Initially this worked well. Māori were eager to sell land, and settlers eager to buy. The Crown mediated the process to ensure that the true owners were properly identified (difficult for tribally owned land) and fairly compensated, by the standards of the time. • 15. Hate List Analysis In Hate List, Jessica's feelings of lack of control over her social life are masked by her confident public persona. What Jessica desires is to be in control and she sees an opportunity to achieve this within the popular group of Garvin High School. Jessica earns her position within her clique by being demanding. She scrutinizes students at school, and her dominant demeanor gives her control over the behaviour of her peers. Although Jessica plays her part exceptionally well, Valerie is able to see through the facade. During a conversation between Jessica and Val, Val gets a glimpse into Jessica's private persona saying, "The confidence was gone, the superiority was missing – all replaced by this weird vulnerability that didn't look right on her," (Brown 215). When Jessica's public persona is stripped away, she is vulnerable. What Jessica desires is control, and without it she feels just as insignificant as those she picks on. By developing a public persona of a confident teenager, Jessica hides her own insecurities, and controls the lives of people around her. Both Alex and Jessica desire a sense of control in their lives, so they create a confident, outspoken public persona that allows them to achieve their desire. Without their public persona, both Alex and Jessica are just as vulnerable as those they appear to have control over. By using her judicial persona at home as well as at work, Alex is able to gain a false sense of control over Josie which should satisfy her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 16. Who Is The Famous Valerie Solanas? Who is the infamous Valerie Solanas? Valerie Solanas was a radical feminist who hated the male sex. American Horror story does a decent job on portraying her but also changes the truth a bit. In the episode, we see two main characters, Andy Warhol and Valerie Solanas. Andy Warhol was an American producer, artist, and director who was a famous. That's where Valerie comes in. She had written a piece and wanted Andy to produce it, but it didn't turn out how she planned. Andy thought her writing was obnoxious and not good, and ended up losing it. This infuriated Solanas and she shot him, but didn't kill him. She then started gathering people to join her radical group to go hunt and eliminate men. She would read parts of the Scum Manifesto which she wrote. She would read parts of her piece to the people in the group which motivated them to follow her and do as she said. They committed many crimes some being killing innocent people that were males for no reason. She wanted to scare the public and the male race with all the brutality they left behind for people to see. During the same time, the Zodiac Killer was doing his own thing. Solanas then tried to take credit and say she was the Zodiac Killer but no one believed her, so once again she got mad again since "No one took the female race seriously." This is how AHS portrait Solanas and tweaked some details to make it go along with what Kai Andersons needed and was doing. There were many things that caught my attention in the show American Horror Story. Some of these being, did some of the things mentioned actually happen some being; Solanas shooting Warhol, the Scum Manifesto, and the Zodiac Killer. I thought they were to extreme to be true, and that they had to have been made up. How can a female group want to eliminate the whole male race, and say they are inferior and suck. I want to find out the actual relationship between solanas and Warhol and how did AHS change and tweak facts to make it fit into what they wanted? In the New Times article called "This Is Why a Radical Playwright Shot Andy Warhol" by Jennifer Latson, tells about why Valerie Solanas shot Andy Warhol. • 18. Negative Effects Of Imperialism Imperialism was an extremely big deal throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. There were many occurrences where people who were involved in imperialism would succeed, but there were also failures. Throughout this time period, powers from Europe, the United States and Japan all contributed to both the positive and negative impacts of imperialism. These impacts affected parts of Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Some of the few people that made huge changes during the "Age of Imperialism" are Dadabha Naoroji, J.A. Hobson, Mary Kingsley, Edgar Canisius, Albert Beveridge, and Rudyard Kipling. Dadabha Naoroji was involved in many things but one of the most important was that he was a founder of the Indian National Congress. The Indian National Congress was a political organization that led efforts for independence and is a major political platform in India. During Naoroji's involvement in politics, he became the first Indian member of the House of Commons. While in office, Naoroji attempted to improve Britain's policies toward India and eventually succeeded. He wanted many things for the British rule such as the abolition of practicing widow–burning, to emphasize the importance of education, and he also wanted the development of railways and irrigation. Naoroji goes on to say that he succeeded in almost all of these things and that the British accepted them, making the impact of imperialism positive. In this situation, the colonizer and the colonized both ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 19. American, Little Miss Sunshine, By Jonathan Dayton And... American Sunshine The American Dream has been redefined through different eras of the United States. At its most optimistic, the American Dream is about having the freedom and opportunity to do and be whatever one chooses, the success stemming from one's achievement of individuality. But the influences of capitalistic ideals in the United States have shifted the common definition and instead of optimism the American Dream is now defined in more cynical terms of upward mobility and wealth. UK director Andrea Arnold's 2016 film American Honey about a young woman who joins a roaming magazine crew critiques the American Dream through the lens of this cynicism. Conversely, the 2006 comedy Little Miss Sunshine by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... "Rather than facing against the discomforts of the working class grind, they seem to be complacent in their existence of freewheeling abandon" (Madden 2016). In addition to the importance that is placed on money and wealth, the central theme of Arnold's film lies in the interactions–more accurately transactions– between the crew and the people they meet. "These kids are supposedly selling magazines, but really they are selling themselves. That feels very American. So the environment in the bus is like a potted version of the bigger picture" (Class Notes). As the film progresses the lines that define what Star will and won't do for money become more blurred as she begins to lose herself to Arnold's American dream–a fantasy born out of hardship. The importance of wealth is equally reflected in moments of Little Miss Sunshine. Plane tickets are unaffordable, so the entire Hoover family is forced to drive to California for the daughter Olive's competition because "they cannot in good conscious leave behind any of their number, however much they'd like to separate" (Klawans, p.42). When they make a stop at a restaurant each of the family members must order something from the menu under four dollars, another testament to the realism of their financial means. While wealth is not the central point of Dayton and Faris' film, the moments that are shaped by wealth resonate with the primary ideology of success in Little Miss Sunshine. To be ...
