Network performance is one of the key

heart of the network and the Collage 740
is fully non-blocking with powerful traffic
prioritization to meet Quality of Service
requests. The use of shared memory for
port-to-port communication avoids head of
line blocking and cut-through switching

ATM is largely used today in high speed
backbones for existing Ethernet and Token
Ring LANs. The key to adding ATM to an
existing network is LAN Emulation
(LANE), an ATM Forum standard that

speed extension of the existing network.

The Collage 740 uses a high performance
RISC processor that is well equipped to
deliver advanced functionality, support new
standards and perform signaling and inter-
switch route set-up in large corporate
networks. With up to three times the
processing power of some switches, the
Collage 740 has the power to deliver LANE,
PNNI and MPOA solutions running on the
main processor unit.

LANE makes an ATM network look and

Standard networking protocols need LANE
services to use an ATM network. The
Collage 740 can guarantee these services are
always available for truly non-stop ATM
backbone networks. Multiple LAN
Emulation Configuration Servers (LECS)
can be created for resilience and the LAN
Emulation Servers (LES) and
Broadcast/Unknown Servers (BUS) for an
Emulated LAN (ELAN) can be distributed
over several switches to guarantee
availability and fast network recovery.

with each one assigned a unique priority
number. The highest priority LECS is
automatically selected as active while the
others remain on standby. Should the active
LECS fail, the others will rapidly nominate
a replacement and the network will
continue without disturbance to the users.

The Collage 740 can distribute load-sharing
LANE servers (LES/BUS) over several
switches to create large ELANs hosting
thousands of users. This takes advantage of
the processing power in a multiswitch
network to improve BUS forwarding
performance and cope with the additional
demands of very large ATM networks.

Using dynamic ATM routing and
distributed LANE the Collage 740 will
automatically connect a LANE client to the
nearest active LES/BUS servers for that
ELAN. A failed LANE server is rapidly
removed from the routing tables ensuring a
LANE client will always be able to access
an active LANE server.

incorporates Active Broadcast Control
(ABC) technology in the BUS. This
eliminates unnecessary broadcast traffic,
prevents broadcast storms and increases the

range of connectivity options:

Ideal for the LAN backbone, 155 Mbps
interfaces are available in standard MMF
(Multi Mode Fiber) and SMF (Single
Mode Fiber) reaching distances of 2 km
and 15 km respectively.

(Unshielded Twisted Pair) modules work

LAN connections, 622 Mbps OC-12
interfaces will also be available in MMF
and SMF versions, supporting distances of
up to 15 km between buildings.

Public ATM services take advantage of
ATM’s high throughput, multimedia and
QoS abilities in the WAN. The Collage 740
is widely approved for 155 Mbps OC-3 and
T1/E1 public ATM services and leased line
connections. The Collage 740 supports
peak cell rate traffic shaping and can
synchronize the ATM network to a selected
interface.

LANE Master is a graphical management
application to simplify the set up and
management of LAN Emulation services in
an ATM network. With this powerful
application, ELAN assignments can be
visualized, documented and changed in a

standard ATM forum LANE Management
Information Bases.
