Madge Networks
Networking
with vision
As the nature of network-oriented applications develop to meet business
needs, so the requirements placed on the network infrastructure change.
Token Ring users need a solution to allow them to keep pace with the new
demands placed on their networks.
The introduction of switching technology to Token Ring networking offers
the ability to add enhanced performance and management to the core of the
network in a cost-effective manner. The benefits of adopting Token Ring
switching re-invigorate the corporate LAN, whilst offering the flexibility to
re-design the LAN infrastructure with no impact to the network users.
Recognizing the complexity of real-world Token Ring networks, the Smart
Ringswitch™
family combines powerful functionality with easy to use
configuration and support. From fully-featured, high-density modular
switches for backbone use, to simple-to-use, fixed-configuration switches for
ring segmentation and power-user workgroups, Smart Ringswitches offer the
ideal approach to advancing the capabilities of today’s Token Ring networks.

The Madge Smart Ringswitch Plus™ is the most fully featured, high capacity
switching solution for Token Ring backbone applications. Being modular in
design, the six-slot chassis allows up to 36 STP, UTP or Fiber Token Ring
switching ports, or can support a mixture of Token Ring with FDDI, ATM or
HSTR modules. When populated with the GroupSwitch™ module, the
Ringswitch Plus can support up to 120 connections, making it ideal for workgroup
applications. With Source-Route and Transparent Bridge frame-forwarding
support, the Ringswitch Plus will easily integrate into existing networks.
A 1.5Gbps backplane and switching capacity, combined with Cut-Through
and Store & Forward data transfer techniques ensure that the Smart
Ringswitch Plus delivers optimal performance for network traffic.

Designed for simple installation and support, the Smart Ringswitch Express™
is an easy to use, cost-effective switching solution. With 16 Token Ring ports
and an option slot which accepts any Ringswitch Module, the versatility of
the Ringswitch Express means it can be easily deployed for branch office or
workgroup applications. In addition, by offering the same bandwidth and
functionality of the Ringswitch Plus but in a smaller design, the Ringswitch
Express is the ideal solution for small backbone or micro-segmentation use.

The Smart Ringswitch Family offers a range of option modules,
including ATM and FDDI, providing a high level of configuration
flexibility. As networks grow, additional modules can be simply added
to increase switch connectivity.
Smart Ringswitch software combines advanced functionality with
ease of use to ensure that maximum benefit is gained from Token
Ring switch deployment.

Madge’s Smart Ringswitch Family is supplied with TrueView™ for
Windows, Madge’s graphical network management platform. In
addition, Device Managers for the Smart Ringswitches are available
for HP OpenView™ and IBM NetView™, allowing Ringswitches to be
incorporated into existing network management platforms.
The Smart Ringswitch family is the only switching solution to offer
support for all Token Ring Remote MONitoring (RMON) groups.
This functionality provides full visibility of the traffic being switched
– essential for pro-active troubleshooting of potential problem areas.

On most networks there is a high level of broadcast traffic that is not
needed for normal network operation. This reduces network
throughput whilst causing PCs to use CPU cycles to process broadcast
frames unnecessarily. Madge’s Active Broadcast Control software is
easy to configure, and will avoid unnecessary propagation of up to
eight different types of broadcast frames from the network, including
IP: ARP; Source-Route: ARE; IPX: RIP, SAP & Type 20; and
NetBIOS frames. This greatly reduces network congestion, therefore
improving overall network performance.
F L E X I B L E P R O T O C O L S U P P O R T
Advanced Protocol Filtering offers the ability to set user-defined filters
for particular broadcast frame types, allowing the introduction of
greater controls on the flow of network traffic. Filtering will
allow/prohibit network frames flowing to particular ports on the switch,
and is therefore an ideal method of implementing simple access
control for network resources.
The Ringswitch software Virtual LAN (VLAN) capability provides
support for both Source Route and Transparent environments. With
the ability to map VLANs across Token Ring switches, and VLANs /
ELANs across ATM backbones, the Smart Ringswitch provides a high
degree of flexibility in network design.
R E S I L I E N T N E T W O R K O P E R A T I O N
The Smart Ringswitch family brings greatly enhanced resilience to
Token Ring networks. For example, the Smart Ringswitch Plus chassis
offers dual, load sharing power supplies, whilst the Ringswitch ATM
modules offer a dual interface to allow a standby link in case of
network failure on the primary connection.
