LSE-404S modules plug directly into the
hub and conduct their switching sessions
across this giga-speed switching fabric. In
addition, each LANswitch Plus port has its
own ASIC switching engine for optimal
performance, scalability and reliability.

The LSE-404S/RJ segment switch provides
a central switch connection for four
10BASE-T Ethernet LANs. The switch is
equipped with standard RJ45 connectors,
enabling a straightforward migration to high-
speed switching. The LSE-404S/RJ will boost
your Ethernet network to new levels of
performance while leveraging your investment
in existing 10BASE-T infrastructure to the
fullest.

In Figure 1 the LANswitch Plus LSE-
404S/RJ provides speedy interconnections
between 10BASE-T LANs, while the LSE-
404/FL and LSE-404/FB connect switching
hubs to a central collapsed backbone over
reliable, long-distance fiber-optic links.

The LSE-404S/FB brings the benefits of
standard 10BASE-FB Synchronous Ethernet
to the switching arena. This powerful segment
switch allows network managers to create
cascading, fault-tolerant backbone connections
which utilize real-time redundancy and
enable extensive diagnositics.

LSE 404S/FL makes it easy to extend the
benefits of high-speed LAN switching
across the campus network. LSE 404S/FL
uses reliable 10BASE-FL (FOIRL) fiber-
optic media to create full-duplex backbone
connections between LANswitch Plus
switching hubs. These multi-mode, fiber-
optic connections establish dedicated,
collision-free inter-hub links that can span
distances of more than two kilometers. The
module also performs traffic filtering,
making it an ideal solution for network
environments that use a collapsed backbone
topology.

busiest switch ports, no-packet-loss is
ensured by the unique congestion
management mechanisms built into every
LANswitch Plus module.
Effective congestion management
improves the overall performance of your
network by ensuring that the network is
utilized for transmitting first-time packets
only, and does not waste time and resources
on multiple re-transmissions.

LANNET LANswitch Plus has built-in
priority and fairness mechanisms that
guarantee the quality of service required for
the multitude of emerging business
applications.
LANswitch Plus prioritization allows the
network manager to assign priorities to specific
sources of packets (e.g., real-time applications)
to ensure that they are delivered at a higher
rate than low priority data. Prioritization
provides the isochronous service required
for multimedia and other delay-sensitive
applications.
Using fairness, LANswitch Plus
maintains balanced, non-proliferating
queues of traffic in all switch ports which
eliminates pressure points in the switch.
What’s more, LANswitch Plus delivers
these features using standard NICs, drivers
and cabling, and serves as an end-to-end
extension for ATM quality of service
standards.

Like all LANswitch Plus modules,
LSE-404S segment switches can be easily
configured in a Virtual LAN (logically
defined work-group). This allows users
within logical groups to work together
irrespective of their physical network
connection.

LANswitch Plus modules are designed to
be completely fault tolerant. Their
distributed ASIC architecture ensures that
failure of one switching module does not
affect other modules in the hub.

To keep a switched network running
smoothly, network managers must be able
to effectively monitor and troubleshoot the
switch. It is essential to know who is using
the switch, what they use it for and how much
traffic they generate. Quickly locating the
source of an error and correcting it is critical
to maintaining good network performance.
LANswitch Plus LSE-404S segment
switches are fully monitored and managed
by SMONMaster,™ LANNET’s RMON
switch monitoring application which works
in conjunction with Montage,™ LANNET’s
comprehensive SNMP-based network
management system.
SMONMaster passively monitors all
traffic traversing the Cellenium Bus, giving
network managers a top-down perspective
of activity in the switch. Top-down switch
management employs a two-tier methodology,
beginning with a global view of switch
traffic and progressing to specific views
of individual switch ports and their hosts.
Using the global view, network managers
can quickly pinpoint problematic areas in
the switch, and then zoom in on specific
hosts or individual sessions in order to
analyze them in more detail.
What’s more, passive monitoring of the
LANswitch Plus bus gives an accurate
picture of switch traffic without affecting the
switching process or performance.
Montage and SMONMaster are fully
integrated with such popular management
platforms as HP OpenView/UNIX,
HP OpenView/Windows, and IBM NetView.
