Improving Filmmaking Skills Through Planning and Teamwork
1.
2. In our preliminary task we had to show that we understood basic
skills such as 180 degree rule, shot reverse shot and match on action.
We didn’t have problems with the 180 degree rule and match on
action, however, we did struggle with shot reverse shot.
In our main task we used the same skills but we developed and
improved them further. We used a high angle shot when the girl is
going down the stairs to show she is transgressing into a dangerous
situation, a pan from the iPad to the iPhone to represent the
characters movement, and an over the shoulder shot when the
stalker is outside the house on his phone which allows the audience
to see what the character is doing as well as the surroundings.
We developed our understanding of the different skills that we used
and now, as opposed to just using techniques for the sake of it, we
chose to use these particular techniques to implement some sort of
feeling or emotion, or to engage the audience.
3. With our preliminary task we were not as organised as we should
have been with planning and sticking to that plan so when it came
to our main task we decided to be more organised with planning
and sticking to it, in order to execute our product to its full potential.
However, we failed at this, as we kept changing our ideas, even
though we had a plan, we always seemed to divert from it. As a
group, we reached an all time low when we discovered that our
two minute opening seemed more like the middle of a movie and
did not engage the audience at all. We then sat down and
decided to start from scratch, we changed our genre, and started
the whole planning process again, promising ourselves that we
would not allow ourselves to drift away from the plan but to stick to
it, and we did.
Since we made that decision as a group, everything ran smoothly
and we were able to execute our film to its full potential.
4. One major thing that we have done differently, apart from use a
wider range of camera techniques, is pay a lot more attention to
sound.
In our preliminary task we didn’t really pay attention to the sound,
we just used a song and faded it in and out which gave a nice
effect to the video.
However, with our main task, we learnt a lot more about sound and
how it can be used to connote different feelings, to conform to or
subvert a genre or tell a story. We used a lot of post-synchronised
sound to subvert the horror genre at the beginning, but as the film
progresses, the sound changes, and it suddenly conforms to the
horror genre, hinting to the audience that something bad is yet to
happen.
We also used minimal dialogue in our main task as we learnt from
our preliminary task that it is hard to execute well, and if its not done
properly, it takes away from the effect of the opening.
5. Through the process of planning, filming and editing, I have learnt
that it takes a lot more effort and planning to create a good film
than I previously thought.
I have also learnt how to work well in a team and the effects of poor
teamwork on a media product; if people in the group fail to pull
their weight, even if its just one person with a small part, the whole
group suffers as an equal contribution is required from each
member and if that is lacking, the group will find themselves stuck.
I have learnt how to convey different horror conventions through
the use of mis-en-scene, editing, camera and sound.
I have also learnt that the purpose of an opening to a movie is to
engage the audience, make the genre known, and introduce the
characters, there shouldn't be too much happening at once
depending on the genre, perhaps it may work with action movies
but with a horror, I do not think it would work.
