Question 7
1. LOOKING BACK AT YOUR
PRELIMINARY TASK, WHAT DO YOU
FEEL YOU HAVE LEARNT IN THE
PROGRESSION FROM IT TO THE FULL
PRODUCT?
Question 7
2. PRELIMINARY TASK
The preliminary task was our first filming
exercise which got us to understand the
basics of continuity: 180-degree rule, match
on action and shot reverse shot. The task
included a character opening a door,
crossing a room and sitting down in a chair
opposite another character, who she then
exchanges a couple of lines of dialogue. It
demonstrated all of the rules in continuity
and since then, my knowledge of these
rules as well as what different shots and
angles represent has expanded and I used
this in my film, Psychosis.
3. In the preliminary task, we used a shot-reverse-shot between the two characters to
convey conversation, which we also did in our film Psychosis when Jenifer is talking
to Her sister, Amanda in the living room. We tried to use a shallow depth of field in
Psychosis by blurring the back of the character’s head out and keeping the person
talking in focus to give off more of a cinematic effect and to making it visually
pleasing.
Preliminary Exercise Psychosis
4. The editing side of Psychosis took up more time than the preliminary task, not only due to it
being much longer, but also by us adding special effects in turn making the lighting darker
than it actually was to create a scary mood at atmosphere for the scene. We also used both
high and low angle shots to convey vulnerability and strength for certain characters, which was
not done in the preliminary task due to non of the characters having a higher role than the
other.
In the preliminary task, we edited the shots to have basic match on action to connote to the
audience that we knew what it was, however in Psychosis we had to expand the knowledge of
this and have ultimately got better at it. Our new skill of expanded knowledge in continuity
matched with our new knowledge of what different shots and angles convey helped for us to
include it within Psychosis.
