1. Thanksgiving Krohn Stefanie
Handprint Turkey
• This game is suitable for GS 2.
• It is an Arts and Crafts activity with a poem.
Materials:
• paper (for handprints) - brown or orange
construction paper works well
• pencil or marker
• scissors
• glue
• printer and paper (for template pieces)
• color pencils
Procedure:
At the beginning of the lesson, the teacher introduces a new poem to the class. The
teacher recites the poem and the children repeat after her. Once the children have
learned the poem, the teacher hands out brown construction paper and the template
pieces.
She gives the following instruction:
We are going to make a Thanksgiving turkey.
Color all the template pieces with color pencils.
Trace your hands on construction paper and cut them out.
Cut out all the template pieces.
Glue the head to the body.
Glue the face onto the head.
Glue the tuft of feathers to the top of the head.
Glue the handprint wings on the back of the body.
Glue the tail to the back of the body.
Glue the feet onto the bottom of the body.
Glue the flower on a wing or beside the neck.
When the children have finished their turkeys they should all take them to the front of
the class. Now the poem is repeated and said together as a group. After this has
been practiced for a while, the children can choose if they want to go around the
classroom and give the turkey to another child as a gift, while reciting the poem.

Variations:
For children who finish early with their crafts activity, the teacher could write the
poem on the board and the children could copy the poem onto the back of the turkey.
This would also make a nice thanksgiving gift for the child’s family.
Poem:
This isn't just a turkey as you can plainly see.
I made it with my hands which are a part of me.
It comes with lots of love especially to say,
I hope you have a very, Happy Thanksgiving Day!
