As these stats indicate, the Higher Education in the US is in a state of fix. Student retention and on-time graduation are major challenges facing the US higher education system. With a recent shift towards performance-based funding for higher education institutions, it is becoming increasingly important for colleges and universities to rethink their planning, advising and career services.
Let’s try to understand this from a student’s perspective. During the course of their academic journey, students are faced with some challenges and important decisions that they need to make. For instance, even before they start their academic journey in higher Ed, they need to decide upon a career that aligns to their interests and abilities. Once they choose a career, they need to decide upon a corresponding major or degree program that would help them pursue the chosen career. After that, they need to plan their courses. And the plan has to keep evolving as the student navigates through his/her academic journey. And then, they have to ensure that they succeed in their courses. During the later stages of their academic journey, they need to work upon their career strategy so that they can find and get into the right internship and job opportunities that will help them realize their career goals. There are many more questions that a student faces over his/her academic journey. And they need reliable information to make informed decisions.
The current situation in most of the colleges/universities is not very encouraging. When students need reliable information to make informed decisions about their academic choices and future careers, they are often referred to overloaded faculty and advising staff, or to disconnected resources scattered throughout university webpages and systems (e.g. university portals, SIS, LMS etc.). And the student then needs to process all the information, connect the dots, and then make their choices. While universities end up spending a lot of money on various systems and staff, this does not benefit the students in the most optimal ways. All this often results in students making the wrong choices or losing interest. And they either perform poorly or decide to drop out of college.
With an aim to address some of the key higher education challenges that we just discussed, Excelsoft has developed Educational Positioning System. EPS is a data-driven software suite that empowers students to take control and navigate optimally through college education. We will find out how in the subsequent slides.
If we look closely at a student’s academic journey beyond the high-school, there are two essential bridges that they need to cross effectively. The first one is the transitioning from high-school into college education. And the second one is when they are about to graduate and pursue their careers, which is their ultimate goal. Students needs a lot of help and intervention in order to cross these bridges successfully. EPS helps students not only cross these bridges effectively, but also helps them stay on track throughout their academic journey and graduate successfully, on time. By doing so, EPS helps universities directly address the four major challenges of college readiness, retention, on-time graduation and preparedness for careers.
(Lack of) College Readiness is a major challenge. A majority of Students are not academically prepared for higher education. They find it difficult to cope with college level courses as they lack some of the fundamental knowledge and study skills to succeed. This translates into a staggering number of students dropping out in the first couple of semesters. Another challenge is that students often chose a career that is not aligned to their interests and abilities. As a result, they lose interest early on, and drop out. EPS helps students choose a career and degree program that align with their interests and aptitude.
Through curated content and self-help tools, EPS ensures that students are academically prepared for college education.
Once a student has successfully crossed the first bridge, it is important for him/her to stay focused, plan well and succeed in their chosen degree program. By actively involving students in decision making, EPS ensures that they are in charge of their college education. EPS provides students with visibility into the future and constantly know the opportunities that they are working towards. Throughout the program EPS engages them and provides timely interventions so that they can graduate on time, successfully.
EPS helps the students cross the second important bridge, i.e. transitioning from higher-ed into their careers. Based on a competency- driven career focused approach, EPS nudges the students towards acquiring the key competencies and skills needed to pursue their chosen careers. It helps them connect with Mentors early on in their academic journey. Mentors are alumni who have successfully graduated and provide the students with guidance and insights to succeed into their careers. EPS also helps students to prepare for, explore and find the right internship and job opportunities.
EPS comprises a set of seamlessly connected 8 modules, that help the student navigate successfully through their academic journey and beyond.
<Pasting module overview for reference. Best is to keep the key aspects of each module in mind and talk about them in your preferred way.>

Careers and Internships
Provides students with resources and advice to prepare for their careers. Suggests events, internship and job opportunities aligned with their competency portfolio. Connects students to alumni mentors. Enables employers to connect to students with the desired competencies and credentials.
A number of students drop out in the first couple of semesters as they are not equipped to deal with college studies/ they are not college-ready. The Academic Preparation module bridges this gap by providing resources, suggestions and tools to prepare students academically for university education in the areas of math, writing, reading, and study skills.
Another reason why students lose interest or drop out early is because they often choose a career that does not align with their skills and abilities. The Educational Strategy module assesses students on their interests and abilities, and provides with information and recommendations on careers that align with their interests. Students can also get to know the employment outlook, expected salaries and other job market analytics. Once they’ve decided on their careers, Ed Strategy module also guides the students to choose a relevant major.
This is one of the most powerful modules of EPS. We all understand the complexities involved in planning courses. The Grad Planner module makes it easy by empowering students create and maintain viable academic plans. It applies various degree audit and sub-audit requirements to ensure that the plan remains viable throughout their academic journey. If a student digresses from his/her plan, Grad Planner informs them of the opportunity costs, both in terms of time to graduate as well as the financial impact. The module also helps students evaluate the opportunity cost of any major switches; thereby enabling students make an informed decision around the switch.
The Roadmap module allows academic and non-academic milestones to be set in order to keep students progressing towards their goals. Helps students remain career focused by tracking their progress against the competencies needed to succeed in their chosen career.
This module enables direct measurement of a student’s academic performance against designed learning outcomes. It also measures progress against key competencies for the chosen career, such that students can remain career focused. It also aids program accreditation processes (avoid this).
Nudges students towards supplementary learning content and practice quizzes to strengthen their weak areas. Identifies the need and enables tutoring sessions for personalized assistance.
Facilitates the meetings between students and advisors throughout their academic cycle. Most importantly, it keeps track of all advisory interactions for consistent and well-informed follow-up advisory sessions.
Provides students with resources and advice to prepare for their careers. Suggests events, internship and job opportunities aligned with their competency portfolio. Connects students to alumni mentors. Enables employers to connect to students with the desired competencies and credentials.
This module underlies and provides intelligence to the other modules in EPS. It uses big-data, advanced statistical tools and algorithms to generate insights and recommendations that help students make the right academic and career decisions. Also generates reports and alerts for advisors and faculty members for proactive, timely intervention.
