2. DEMONETISATION
Demonetization is the act of stripping a currency unit of its status as legal tender. It occurs whenever there is a
change in national currency.
In india 3 time step of demonetization taken in 1946 , 1978 BY MORARJI DESAI, 2016 in which legal tender of
RS1,000: RS10,000 ; RS500 & RS1,000 removed from circulation respectively .
Objective is to combet tax evasion via “black money” held outside the formal economic system and also to reduce
the terror funding
On 8th
November,2016 : Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced the demonetisation initiative at 8 pm to fulfil
four objectives of
o checking terror-funding by Pakistan,
o printing of counterfeit currency,
o black money
o corruption
Major disadvantage is to the cost incurred in printing and minting new currency
As per CENTRAL BANK “RBI” ‘S REPORT people had returned Rs 15.28 lakh crore of the Rs 15.44 lakh crore banned
currency, or 98.96 per cent of the scrapped Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, to the banking system AND FOR THE
REMAINING AMOUNT RBI REPLIED , indicating that just a miniscule percentage of currency was left out of the
system after the government's unprecedented note ban aimed at curbing black money and corruption.
Another benefit is to curtail criminal activity as their supply of money is no longer legal tender. This affects
counterfeiters as well as they cannot exchange their "merchandise" for fear of discovery
Also this process is risky as it can plunge the nation into utter chaos if not handled with the utmost of competence.
