3. COLD
Common colds are mild infections of the nose and throat,
which are very common in young children and are caused
by many different viruses. Usually the viral illness causes
some combination of stuffy nose, runny nose, sore throat,
cough, runny eyes, ear fluid and fever.
Flu is also caused by a virus (e.g., influenza-A, influenza-B) and
causes symptoms of fever, headache, sore throat, cough,
muscle ache and fatigue. Most people with influenza feel too ill
to attend childcare.
4. SPREAD
The viruses can be transmitted from one person to another
in respiratory secretions (i.e., saliva, nasal discharge, and
phlegm). Infected droplets may be scattered through
sneezing or coughing or they may land on surfaces
touched by other persons, who then touch their eyes, nose
or mouth.
Young children may be sick with these illnesses several
times per year. As the number of persons in contact with a
child increases, so does the likelihood of exposure to the
common viruses that cause the colds and flu.
5. SYMPTOMS
Fever:- A fever helps fight infection by creating an
environment that is less conducive to the growth of
bacterial and viral organisms. Normal body temperature is
thought to range from 970 - 1000 F.
If you have ruled out other factors other than illness that
can cause a fever, it is then important to determine if you
are dehydrated or if your fever is dangerously high.
Cough:- Coughing is your body’s way of trying to clear
the lungs and airways. There are two major types of
coughs: (1) productive (brings up mucus or phlegm) and
(2) non-productive (dry cough without any mucus).
6. Coughs may be caused by viral or bacterial infections,
allergies, or by irritants, especially cigarettes. It is
important to determine if your cough is caused by an
infection, an allergy, or an irritant.
Sore Throat:- Viral infections are most common, with
less severe symptoms, and can be treated with self-care.
Bacterial infections are the more serious cause of sore
throats, such as strep throat. Sore throats caused by
bacterial infections should be examined immediately and
treated with antibiotics.
7. Nasal Congestion:- It has many causes: a cold, the flu,
other infections, or an allergy to food, chemicals, or other
substances like pollen or dust. If your nasal congestion is
caused by an allergen, the best way to clear up congestion
is to avoid the allergen.
8. PREVENTION
Get adequate rest, good nutrition, plenty of fluids.
Avoid people who are sick.
Remind children if they sneeze or cough into their hand or
tissue.
Runny noses and eyes should be promptly wiped, then
wash their hands.
The childcare facility should have fresh air and be aired
out completely once a day, even in the winter months.
