For those of you without a smart phone or tablet, the code leads to my ppt in Slideshare. Fun! Now you all know it’s available for you to read or review at your leisure. I’d be happy to go over how to scan the QR code after this session for anyone who’s interested. Before I go into how I used QR Codes, let’s deal with the elephant in the room right off the bat…

Not everyone has a device or app Not so intuitive process to scan Links go to things that aren’t useful People aren’t bothering to scan them anymore If I learned about this tech from you, my colleagues whether librarians or technicians, why the backlash? Why the raining down on my play and experimentation, on my opportunity? I’ve wasted time, money, effort made a mistake missed the train on this tech would have nothing to say in my 10 min here as I’d already applied & been accepted Suddenly I was the one saying “OMG NO!!” What did I do? I researched the heck out of it – I googled it, also went over materials I’ve collected in past few years I believe this tool CAN work for us if we use it smartly & effectively Not a terrible decision to use them in the library setting We are skilled! Know how to use the devices required Teach/instruct all the time QR codes = free, easy to create and manage Through this process I developed a personal credo about emerging technology: EXPERIMENT, PLAY, MAKE MISTAKES, USE TECHNOLOGY NOW B/C IT’S GOING TO CHANGE TOMORROW Fortunately, I’m supported by supervisors & mgrs to take the risk, keep the project going. Let’s go over the issues & turn them on their heads, into how-to’s 1. device: a smartphone or tablet with internet access…

I remember the 80’s, we call this retro these days…ghetto blaster with iPhone dock instead of cassette! 2. scanning I teach people how to access info every day, I can teach people how to use their fun devices, and I want to! We vet info all the time, capable of helping users select appropriate app App generally = multipurpose code scanner – ISBNs, grocery items to see ingredients etc 3. link as directly as possible to specific resources = useful!! Again, we vet info all the time, we are highly skilled in finding the most appropriate link Then users can bookmark URLs EG: textbook available in a database reducing keystrokes to access that info Other tips: Use software to keep track of stats Especially useful for databases – may not have easy access to data via publishers Use them in multiple areas: I joined our Marketing Committee and included codes on posters, screen savers etc Take advantage of your clients’ use of technology PC judges given iPads Interested in using them in your library? Align with your strategic plan For example, several of the books in our collection are also available in our subscription databases. One of our strategic plan items is to increase access & usage of electronic resources & I used that in my proposal for a ‘False book’ project…

- In case you didn’t catch what was on it, here’s the how-to sticker on the back Created how-to’s for colleagues and for clients – borrowing from other libraries’ how-to’s of course! Thank you UofL ;) How did I do it? With the help of my colleagues of course. Created proposal received approval and funds for the books & labels worked with previous Emerging Tech Specialist colleague to find appropriate tools URL shortener QR code generator An aside note – our budget was cut by 38% this year so guess what we’re losing, people and our collection. An indicator that usage of electronic resources are even more important than ever! I’ll quickly show you the criteria my Emerging Tech Specialist developed, please ask me after or check out my ppt in slideshare for more details…
- URL SHORTENERS Chose snipurl Why? Shorter urls create less dense & more easily scanned codes Chose: snipurl as you can change the destination URL REMEMBER: what if the destination URL changes? That’s ok, I can still use the same snipurl, just edit it, and therefore, I can use the same qr code too
- QR CODE GENERATORS Chose: Delivr Not the most user-friendly so I recommend playing around a bit yourselves to find the right fit I’m not going into much detail about the criteria as you all have access to this ppt in slideshare and here’s the link in case you missed it at the beginning…
