2. What is Bipolar
Disorder?
• Bipolar is a mood disorder associated with mood swings ranging from
high (manic) and low (depressive).
• Each mood swing works in cycle, for example: What goes up, must
come down.
3.
4. • Manic episodes may include symptoms such as high energy, reduced
need for sleep, and loss of touch with reality. The person may appear very happy
and euphoric.
• Depressive episodes may include symptoms such as low energy, low
motivation, and loss of interest in daily activities
9. • The exact cause of bipolar disorder isn’t known, but a combination
of genetics, environment, and altered brain structure and chemistry
may play a role.
• Hormonal imbalances might trigger or cause bipolar disorder.
• Environmental factors: Abuse, mental stress, a "significant loss," or
some other traumatic event may contribute to or trigger bipolar
disorder.
10. Silver Linings Playbook
• Is about a man named Pat
who has been diagnosed
with Bipolar disorder.
• He has been released from
a mental hospital after he
promises that he is better.
• However, he has obsession
with his ex-wife. Even
though he walked in on her
having an affair with
another man.
11. • Since Pat has been released his whole focus
is on trying to win back his ex-wife.
• He meets a friend who is suffering from
depression who agrees she will help him and
be a liaison between him and his wife. But he
has to agree to dance with her at “Dance
depression away event”.
• All the while this is going on, the movie
depicts Pat going from different manic
moods to depressive moods and all he wants
to do is get better until he realizes ………..
12. • He realizes that, “You have to do
everything you can and if you stay
positive you have a shot at a silver
lining”.
• He eventually falls for his friend and they
become a happy couple and his bipolar
is not necessarily cured but he is able to
manage it because he understands it
more, thus the silver lining.
14. • As noted before, environmental factors can trigger a genetic bipolar disorder.
In this movie the fact that Pats wife had an affair sparked his bipolar disorder
resulting in him having to go to a mental hospital.
15. • During Pats manic episodes he would go running to try and
control his manic thoughts.
16. • Even though Pat was ambitious and was constantly trying to
better himself so that he could win over his ex-wife, he knew
in the back of his mind that there was something wrong. He
was depressed and did not want to accept the fact that he was
sick and had a mental illness.
17. • Finally, Pat comes into realization that he does in fact have a mental
illness only after discovering happiness with his new love affair.
18. Even though Pat was suffering from his Bipolar illness. What he
eventually realized is that there was a silver lining.
He realized what his trigger was for his episodes, that being the thought
of his ex-wife.
It was only after meeting his new love and feeling what true happiness
was, that he started his disease management.
It was a form of self cognitive therapy with a strong support system with
his new love….
