The Passive Voice by Lourdes
The passive voice is used when we want to
emphasize the action and the object of a
sentence rather than the subject. This means
that the subject is less important than the action
itself or that we don't know who or what the
subject is.
Use of the passive voice
Present Simple:
Many people sell unwanted gifts
Unwanted gifts are sold by many people
Past Simple:
Many people sold unwanted gifts
Unwanted gifts were sold by many people
FORM: Subject + Form of to be +
Past Participle
Present Perfect:
Many people have sold unwanted gifts
Unwanted gifts have been sold by many
people.
Past Perfect Simple:
Many people had sold unwanted gifts
Unwanted gifts had been sold by many
people.
Future Simple:
Many people will sell unwanted gifts
Unwanted gifts will be sold by many people
Be going to:
Many people are going to sell unwanted gifts
Unwanted gifts are going to be sold by many
people.
Modal Perfects
● Many people must have sold unwanted gifts
● Unwanted gifts must have been sold by many
people.
Modal (Can)
● Many people can sell unwanted gifts
● Unwanted gifts can be sold by many people
Modal (Should)
● Many people should sell unwanted gifts
● Unwanted gifts should be sold by many people
Active to passive transformation.
Change in the setences.
To form a passive sentence from an active one we
have to take into account the following points:
● The doject of the active sentences becames the
subject in the passive sentence.
● We have to use a form of the verb “to be” + the past
participle of the verb that we have in the active
sentence.
●The subject of the “active”sentences becames the
object of the passive (or is left out).
Peter builds a beautiful house
S Vb Do
A beautiful house is built by Peter
Choose 5 sentences in the active voice and turn them into
passive voice.
● They will buy a new camera.
- A new camera will be bought.
● The goverment will solve the problem.
- The problem will be solved by the goverment.
● They speak English in that country.
- English is spoken in that country.
● Somebody offered her a cheap camera.
- A cheap camera was offered to her.
● Pollution is destroying the Earth litlle by litlle.
- The Earth is being destroyed litlle by litlle by
pollution.
