Question 2
1. How does your media
product represent
particular social
groups?
2. Different areas of society
The different areas of society represented within my magazine
include young artists in their teens and early twenties. Even though
my target audience are 25-35 year old its a youth issue and
therefore explains my choice of social group. Having young artists
helps celebrate the changing face of country and therefore interests
the audience.
I have females and males represented reflecting the multisex genre.
Also my main target audience is females so by having females on
there can allow them to aspire to be like them, even if the artists are
younger and similarly the males can be there for the female
audience to admire. Females are represented as glamorous but
natural and real therefore representing the genre and appealing to
the target audience who favour natural hardworking beautiful
women.
The working class are represented by keeping the price down at
£2.20 as this is an accessible price. Similarly the craft elements
such as bedazzle your own “Stetson” can link to how the working
class make more with what they’ve got.
3. Country music subcultures
Alternative
Country (rock)
Cajun
(French
Country Music influenced)
Americana
(South
America)
Western
Swing
(Big Band
sound)
Bluegrass
(fiddles)
Traditional New Country
(banjos) (pop)
New country is the most popular subculture and where I have focused my music magazine due to it being the most modern and therefore
attractive for my target audience who are more interested in the newest strand of country as well as the legends of yesterday.
However they also enjoy many crossovers that often occur within New Country that happen in order to create updated and distinct sounds. This is reflected in my
magazine where I have used the classic country music attire such as a denim shirt, cowboy boots and a cowboy hat and a guitar which can represent the traditional
sub culture and similarly used Alternative country by speaking about country women rocking and about the audiences “rockin” votes but then have added a belt and
edited the images to make them brighter and therefore more modern and real New Country but with elements to incorporate evolving genre of country music.
Also on a wider level while some music genres jealously guard their territory country music however absorbs all influences such as from pop music. Therefore I
also incorporated this by using youth and adding a pop edge rather then too much classic in order to not only showcase the subculture of New Country but also
country music overall so to provide my audience with a realistic reflection and ideology of country music.
4. Social issues
The front cover of the magazine reflects the changing face of country music as there is
multiethnic approach. It highlights how country music has developed for to reflect its audiences
and is embracing the modern nature of the world. I have dealt with gender by featuring both
males and females in my magazine. There is a majority of females in order to reflect the target
audience. Young people are featured as it is a “Youth Issue” but shows how the youth are
emerging into the amazing world of country music! I have also dealt with stereotypes of country
music such as by the language “yee haw” and “ya’ll” and also through the classic country attire
such as a cowboy hat, cowboy boots and a denim shirt. This marks out my magazine to make it
clear what is the genre so my target audience are easily able to recognise it and can enjoy its
timeless classic ability.
