Confucianism is a system of thought based on the teachings of a Chinese man named Kung Fuzi.
Which is latinaized as Confucius, he lived from 551 to 479 b.c.e.
Confucius claimed that he was not original and neither were his teachings, but believed himself to
be a "creative transmitter of wisdom from the past". He created a moral code on based on ethics,

of the father was to make sacrifices and to report any family concerns to these shrines.
Confucius emphasized five virtues, which are the the ideals of Confucianism. The
Confucian virtues are something that should reflect sincerity and inner spirit. The most important
one was ren which means "humanity" he thought that should be the ideal for everyone to follow.

Confucius created a system of thinking called Confucianism. If only one word could be used to
summarize the Chinese way of life for the last two thousand years, that word would be Confucian.
No other person has had as great an effect on the life and thought of the Chinese people as Confucius

looked to a past time that he saw as the golden age. He told one of his disciples, "I transmit but I

At age 50, he was approached by the Baron of Qi to help defend against a rebellion, but he
declined. He was later made a city magistrate by the Duke of Lu and under his administration the city
flourished; he was promoted many times, eventually becoming Grand Secretary of Justice(see
figure3–1) and at age 56, Chief Minister of Lu. Neighbouring countries began to worry that Lu
would become too powerful and so they sent messengers with gifts and dancers to distract the
duke during a sacrifice holiday. When the duke abandoned his duties to receive messengers ,
Confucius resigned and left the country. Confucius spent the next five years wondering China
with his disciples, finding that he was rarely wanted at all royal courts and it did not take long
before nobles would begin plotting to drive him out or have him killed. He was arrested once and
jailed for five days and at 62 he was chased, along with his disciples, into the countryside by a
group of soldiers sent by a jealous nobles, until he was able to send a messenger to the King of a
nearby country, who sent his own soldiers to rescue them. Once again, Confucius was to be given

that Confucianism accepts, and provides corrections to many of the same issues that human rights
face. Education is one example of a deep concern that human rights activists campaign for, but it is a

public works, and toward the end of his career as minister of justice in the state of Lu. At fifty–six,
Confucius realized that his political career was at a stalemate when his superiors were

to reshape the values and structure of Chinese statecraft, education and social organization

whether Confucianism is a religion, the most important Confucian text, The Analects, must be
analyzed to decide whether his teachings were rationally humanistic or based on religion and divinity.
Throughout The Analects, it appears evident that there are aspects that seem metaphysical and
beliefs that seem religious. One idea of religion that appears to be in The Analects is the idea of
fate. This belief in fate suggested that Confucius had some belief in a supreme deity. Throughout
The Analects, Confucius reveals many times this sign of divine commission. In Book VII, it
quotes, "The Master said, 'Heaven is author of the virtue that is in me. What can Huan T'ui do to
me?'"(Analects 89). Then in Book XIV, this idea is mentioned again, "The Master said, 'It is
Destiny if the Way prevails, it is equally Destiny if the Way falls into disuse. What can Kung

A philosopher named Confucius founded Confucianism in China 2,500 years ago. Confucianism is a
system of ethical behavior and social responsibility that became the great traditions of the East.1 It
played an important role in the evolution in Chinese culture over the centuries. It has influenced
near–by countries and had made a mark in the history of religion. There are today over six million
people who call themselves Confucianists. Most Confucianists live in East Asia where Confucianism

Throughout his governmental career, he was promoted several times. Later he became Grand
Secretary of Justice and, at age 56, he became Chief Minister of Lu. Because of Confucius?
increasing power, many nearby countries became worried that Lu would over power them. They
sent messengers with gifts and dancers to distract the Duke during a sacrifice holiday and the
Duke later abounded his duties. When Confucius received word of this, he resigned and left the
country. Confucius spent the next five years of his life wandering China with his disciples until he
was able to send messenger to the sympathetic king of a nearby country, who sent his own band of
soldiers to rescue them 2. At the age of 67, Confucius returned to Lu where he spent the rest of his
years teaching until he died at 72.
Teachings The teaching of Confucius still has a great effect on the culture of China today. His
followers wrote down all of his teachings after his death and have been translated into many different

Confucianism and Daoism are two influential schools of thoughts that have existed in ancient China
around the 6th century BCE. The former, led by the politician and philosopher Confucius, proposed
that humans live in society according to a set of predefined rules and that they transform society
through political action. Whereas the latter, led by the philosopher Lao–Tzu, promoted the idea of
inaction; people should go with the flow instead of taking action to control their lives and dominate
their surroundings. Although, at first glance Daoism and Confucianism seem to be two opposing
philosophies, a more in depth analysis of two of their key ideas –filial piety and education–reveals
that they do share some similarities.

If natural filial piety were expressed in the family from the very beginning, conflict would have no
means to arise. Thus, filial piety exists naturally and so should it be expressed.
Confucius also recognizes that filial piety should be expressed naturally. According to Confucius,
being filial to our parents is the utmost expression of respect. This is an essential element in
obtaining the title of Chun–Tzu, or noble person. However, filial piety is not a one–way street.
Parents are also filial to their children and to their parents. Both parent and child have a natural
position and responsibility within the family; therefore natural filial piety is reciprocal. It is
through recognizing and practicing filial piety in the family that a person will know how to act
outside of the family. For in the Confucian tradition, it is realized that filial piety also exists
between all beings. This is evident in the Confucian Golden Rule: "Never do to others what you
would not like them to do to you" (Book XV). As in Taoist thought, filial piety is something that
naturally exists and is reciprocal in nature. To force filial piety into being or to intentionally
practice reciprocal filial piety would be going against its true nature. Filial piety must be freely and

There are six major works which are considered the classics of Confucianism. They are The Shu
King (Cannon of History), the Shi King(Cannon of Poetry), the I King (Cannon of Changes), the
Li Ki (Book of Rites), the Chun Chiu (spring and Autumn Annals) and the Hsiao King ( Book of
Filial Piety). Other books composed of his teachings after Confucius' death include The analects

the love of friends. Confucius felt that formality was lacking in his society and that each person

There are 3 notable figures in Confucianism Kongzi, Mengzi and Xunzi. Kongzi better known as
Confucius is the founder of Confucianism. Confucianism also known as Ruism is a way of life
taught by Confucius in the 6th–5th century BCE (it has existed for more than 2 millenia and
followed by the Chinese). Confucianism is seen as an all–encompassing humanism that neither
denies nor slights heaven.
In this essay, I would like to state my view that Confucianism has its positive and negative sides. In
