2. What is Entomology?
 Entomology is the study of insects.
 The study of insects including their evolution, ecology,
behaviour, anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and genetics is
Entomology.

3. What are Insects?
 Insects are invertebrates belonging to the Class Insecta under
the largest phylum in Kingdom Animalia, the Phylum Arthropoda.
 Arthropods are characterised by : jointed appendages,
chitinous exoskeleton, haemocoel, metamerically segmented
body.

4.  Segmented (Metameres) invertebrates
 Segments grouped into 3 tagmata : head, thorax & abdomen
 6 fused metameres of Head + 3 metameres in thorax + ~ 11 segments in
abdomen.
 Hexapoda – three pairs of legs, a pair each on a thoracic segment
 One or two pairs of wings on thoracic segemnts
 Chitinous exoskeleton
 Tracheal respiration
 Possess a pair of compound eyes & a pair of antenna
