2. What is Entomology?
Entomology is the study of insects.
The study of insects including their evolution, ecology,
behaviour, anatomy, physiology, biochemistry and genetics is
Entomology.
3. What are Insects?
Insects are invertebrates belonging to the Class Insecta under
the largest phylum in Kingdom Animalia, the Phylum Arthropoda.
Arthropods are characterised by : jointed appendages,
chitinous exoskeleton, haemocoel, metamerically segmented
body.
4. Segmented (Metameres) invertebrates
Segments grouped into 3 tagmata : head, thorax & abdomen
6 fused metameres of Head + 3 metameres in thorax + ~ 11 segments in
abdomen.
Hexapoda – three pairs of legs, a pair each on a thoracic segment
One or two pairs of wings on thoracic segemnts
Chitinous exoskeleton
Tracheal respiration
Possess a pair of compound eyes & a pair of antenna
