5. Word Insect
The word insect is derived from Latin word
insectum; meaning notched (to cut into)
that refers to their segmented body .
Insectum was borrowed into English as
insect.
6. What are insects? INSECTS
ARE
Insects:
Organisms truly animals (having no

thorax and abdomen and usually having two pairs
of wings, compound eyes and two antennae”.
7. Entomology:
Branch of zoology that
deals with the study of
insects:
Entomologist:
Scientist or zoologist who study insects are called
entomologist.
e.g. At UOG we have Pof. Dr Muhammad
Faheem Malik.And
Prof.Dr Miss Summara Afsheen.
8. INSECTS ARE MORE
SUCCESS FULL LIFE FORM
ON OUR PLANET
There is one insect out of every four animals of
this planet.
It is predicted when planet earth will be destroyed
by atomic explosions and life goes to an end the
only living bodies that survives over that time are
the insects, like cockroaches that will eat all
destroyed decaying material of plants, animals and
so on.
They have capacity to live even after
dynamite destruction.
11. Phylum Arthropoda
Arthropoda from Greek words arthron
“joint “and poods “foot” which together
means jointed feet. e.g. Arachnids
,crustaceations etc.
An arthropod is an invertibrate that has an
exoskeleton, a segmenred body,adjointed
attachements (appendages).
12. Four Classes
Body features based classes
Crustacea e.g Prawns, Crabs.
Myriapoda e.g Centipedes,
Arachnida e.g Spiders, scorpions.
Insecta e.g Bees, Flie.
Thirty two Orders: The largest one is
coleoptera.
14. INSECTS POSSES EVERY
WHERE ON THIS PLANET
In sea:
A habitat of insects (few) is sea e.g. Marine
flies etc.
On land:
Frozen Extreme of Arctic and Antarctica is
habitate of insects that are alive and activate
during warm months.
15. In soil:
Beneath our feet e.g. Earthworm.
On soil around us e.g. ants.
In the air above our heads e.g.
mosquitoes,grasshopper.
In and on bodies of plants animals e.g. lics.
Drainage water:
In drainage water e.g. cockroaches.
In and over stagnant water:
Larvae of mosquitoes. They can five below
zero degree to over 48 degree centigrade.
16. SIZE
The largest:
Insects in the world is the stick- insect,
“pharnacia kirbyi”
The female of which can be over 36cm
long.
The smallest:
Known insect in the world is the
“Megaphragma Caribea”
of 0.17mm long.
