INTRODUCTION:
• BORN IN CATALONIA, SPAIN IN 1852. HIS FATHER WAS A
COPPERSMITH.
• AT EARLY AGE HE SUFFERED FROM ILLNESS KNOWN AS
RHEUMATISM.
• BECAUSE OF THAT HE WAS UNABLE TO PLAY, AND SPENT
SUBSTANTIAL AMOUNT OF TIME STUDYING AND OBSERVING NATURE
AND ITS DESIGN.
• THIS INVESTIGATION OF NATURE AT EARLY AGE, GREATLY INFLUCED
HIS ORIGINL ARCHITECTURE STLYE.
• HE STUDIED ARCHITECTURE AT THE LLOTJA SCHOOL AND
BARCELONA HIGHER SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE.
• TO FINANCE HIS STUDIES HE WORKED AS DARFTSMAN FOR VARIOUS
ARCHITECTS AND CONTRACTOR.

WORKING STYLE :
• GAUDI NEVER MADE DETAILED DRAWNG OF ANY OF HIS BUILDING.
• HE USE TO MAKE SCALE MODEL TO UNDERSTAND THE STRUCTURE AND THE SPACES
INSIDE THE BUILDING.
• HE CONSIDERED EVERY DETAIL AND INTEGRATED IT INTO HIS ARCHITECTURE.
• HE ALSO MADE SOME MAJOR CHANGES IN DESIGN WHILE THE BUILDING WAS UNDER
CONSTRUCTION.

IN BARCELONA.
• GUELL’S PLANNING CONCEPT WAS
A HOUSE AMONG GARDENS, FOR
THE GARDEN CITY BUILT IN 1914
• THE PARK WAS ORIGINALLY PART
OF A COMMERCIALLY
UNSUCCESSFUL HOUSING SITE
• IT WAS INSPIRED BY THE
ENGLISH GARDEN CITY
MOVEMENT
7. SAGRADA FAMILIA
• LOCATION – BARCELONA, SPAIN
• CONSTRUCTION STARTED – 1882
• BUILDING TYPE – CHUTCH, BASALICA
• CONSTRUCTION SYSTEM – MASONARY AND
CONCRETE
• CONSTRUCTION OF SAGRADA FAMILIA
COMMENCED IN 1882 AND GAUDÍ BECAME
INVOLVED IN 1883, TAKING OVER THE
PROJECT AND TRANSFORMING IT WITH HIS
ARCHITECTURAL AND ENGINEERING STYLE,
COMBINING GOTHIC AND CURVILINEAR ART
NOUVEAU FORMS. GAUDÍ DEVOTED HIS LAST
YEARS TO THE PROJECT, AND AT THE TIME OF
HIS DEATH AT AGE 73 IN 1926, LESS THAN A
QUARTER OF THE PROJECT WAS COMPLETE
8. • THE ICONOGRAPHIC AND STRUCTURAL PROGRAMS OF
THE CHURCH ARE COMPLEX BUT ITS PLAN IS BASED ON
THE TRADITIONAL BASILICA CRUCIFORM FOUND IN
NEARLY ALL MEDIEVAL CATHEDRALS. HOWEVER, UNLIKE
MANY THESE CHURCHES, SAGRADA FAMILIA IS NOT
BUILT ON AN EAST-WEST AXIS. INSTEAD, THE CHURCH
FOLLOWS THE DIAGONAL ORIENTATION THAT DEFINES
SO MUCH OF BARCELONA, PLACING THE CHURCH ON A
SOUTHEAST-NOTHWEST AXIS.
THE GLORY FAÇADE (SOUTHEAST):
• THIS WILL EVENTUALLY BE CHURCH'S MAIN FAÇADE
AND ENTRANCE. AS WITH THE TRANSCEPT ENTRANCES,
IT HOLDS A TRIPLE PORTAL DEDICATED TO CHARITY,
FAITH, AND HOPE. THE FAÇADE ITSELF IS DEDICATED TO
MANKIND IN RELATION TO THE DIVINE ORDER.
THE PASSION FAÇADE (SOUTHWEST):
• DEDICATED TO THE PASSION OF CHRIST, ITS FOUR
EXISTING BELLTOWERS ARE BETWEEN 98 AND 112
METERS TALL AND ARE DEDICATED TO THE APOSTLES
JAMES THE LESSER, BARTHOLOMEW, THOMAS AND
PHILIP (LEFT TO RIGHT). JOSEP MARIA SUBIRACHS IS
RESPONSIBLE FOR THE FAÇADE SCULPTURE.

NATIVITY FAÇADE (NORTHEAST):
• DEPICTS THE BIRTH OF CHRIST AND
IS THE ONLY FAÇADE TO BE
COMPLETED DURING GAUDI'S
LIFETIME. ITS FOUR EXISTING
BELLTOWERS ARE BETWEEN 98 AND
112 METERS TALL AND ARE
DEDICATED TO THE SAINTS
BARNABAS, JUDE, SIMON AND
MATTHEW (LEFT TO RIGHT).
• TEN ADDITIONAL BELLTOWERS (98-
112 METERS HIGH) ARE PLANNED
THOUGH THESE WILL BE
OVERWHELMED BY SIX TOWERS
THAT WILL BE SIGNIFICANTLY
FOUR OF THESE TOWERS WILL BE
DEDICATED TO THE EVANGELISTS,
ONE TO THE VIRGIN MARY, AND
GRANDEST, RISING TO 170 METERS,
TO JESUS CHRIST.
