2. Margaret Mary was born in 1647 in L'Hautecour, Burgundy, France,
now part of the commune of Verosvres, then in the Duchy of Burgundy.
3. She was the fifth of seven children, and only daughter of Claude and Philiberte Lamyn
Alacoque. Her father was a well-to-do notary. Her godmother was the Countess of Corcheval.
4. Margaret was described as showing intense love
for the Blessed Sacrament from early childhood
5. When Margaret
was eight years old,
her father died
of pneumonia.
She was sent to
a convent school
run by the Poor
Clares in Charolles,
where she made
her First
Communion at
the age of nine.
6. She later contracted rheumatic
fever which confined her to bed
for four years. At the end of this
period, having made a vow to
the Blessed Virgin Mary to
consecrate herself to religious
life, it is said she was instantly
restored to perfect health.
7. In recognition of this favor, she added the name "Mary"
to her baptismal name of Margaret.
8. She had
visions of
Jesus Christ,
which she
thought were
a normal part
of human
experience and
continued to
practice austerity
9. With the death of her father, the family's assets were held
by an uncle who refused to hand them over, plunging her
family into poverty.
10. During this
time, her only
consolation was
frequent visits
to pray before
the Blessed
Sacrament in
the local
church.
11. When she was 17, however, her brother came of age, took
undisputed possession of the home and things improved.
12. Her mother encouraged her to socialize, in the hopes of her finding a suitable husband.
Out of obedience, and believing that her childhood vow was no longer binding, she
began to accompany her brothers in the social events, attending dances and balls
13. One night, after returning home from a ball for Carnival dressed in her finery,
she experienced a vision of Christ, scourged and bloody. He reproached her for her
forgetfulness of him; yet he also reassured her by demonstrating that his heart was filled
with love for her, because of the childhood promise she had made to his Blessed Mother.
14. As a result, she determined to fulfill her vow and entered, at 24 years
of age, the Visitation Convent at Paray-le-Monial on 25 May 1671
15. Margarite Mary
was subjected to
many trials to prove
the genuineness
of her vocation.
She was admitted
to wearing the
religious habit on
25 August 1671
16. She was finally
admitted to
profession on
6 November 1672.
It is said
that she was
assigned to the
infirmary and
was not very
skillful at
her tasks
21. On 27 December 1673,
the feast of St. John,
Margaret Mary said
that Jesus had permitted
her to rest her head
upon his heart, and then
disclosed to her the
wonders of his love, telling
her that he desired to make
them known to all mankind
and to diffuse the treasures
of his goodness, and
that he had chosen
her for this work
23. She had three visions and
messages for the King of France
-That the Lord wanted to establish
his empire in the heart of our
Great Monarch (Louis XIV)
-"to build a building where the
painting of this divine Heart will
be, to receive the consecration
and the homage of the King
and of the whole court ...“
-"to be painted on his standards
and engraved on his weapons to
make him victorious over
all his enemies,
24. She eventually received the support of
Claude de la Colombière, the community's
confessor for a time, who declared
that the visions were genuine.
26. Two years later, a chapel was built at Paray-le-Monial to
honor the Sacred Heart. Observation of the feast of the
Sacred Heart spread to other Visitation convents
28. The Sacred
Congregation of Rites
eventually recognized
her heroic virtues,
granting her the title
"servant of God".
In March 1824,
Pope Leo XII
pronounced
her venerable
and on 18 September
1864 Pope Pius IX
declared her blessed.
29. When her tomb was opened in July 1830, two instantaneous cures were recorded.
Her body rests above the side altar in the Chapel of the Apparitions, located at the
Visitation Monastery in Paray-le-Monial, which draws pilgrims from all parts of the world
30. Sister Margaret Mary
was canonized by
Pope Benedict XV
in 1920,
and in 1929
her liturgical
commemoration
was included in
the General
Roman calendar.
Her feast day is now
on 16 October
31. Her short devotional work, La Devotion
au Sacré-Coeur de Jesus (Devotion to
the Sacred Heart of Jesus), was published
posthumously by J. Croiset in 1698
32. “And He [Christ] showed me that it was
His great desire of being loved by men
and of withdrawing them from the path
of ruin that made Him want to manifest
His Heart to men, with all the treasures of love,
of mercy, of grace, of sanctification and
salvation which it contains, in order that those
who desire to render Him and procure Him all
the honour and love possible might themselves
be abundantly enriched with those divine
treasures of which His heart is the source”
33. SANTA MARGARITA
MARÍA ALACOQUE
Saint Margarite
Mary Alacoque
Although there have been many
devoted to the Sacred Heart the
modern day devotion is due to St
Margarite M. A. of the order of
the Visitation to whom Our Lord
appeared in 1673. In these
apparitions, Jesus said to her that
whoever preayed to the Sacred
Heart, would receive many graces.
“Behold this my heart, which
despite consuming itself in ardent
love for men, doesn’t receive from
christians more than sacrilegious
scorn, indifference and ingratitude
even in the very sacrament of my
love. - The worst that wounds my
Heart is the insults I receive from
persons consecrated to my service”
34. in his papal
encyclical
Auctorem Fidei,
Pius VI mentions
devotion to the
Sacred Heart.
In the letters of
Blessed Mary of
the Divine Heart
(1863-1899),
she petitions
Pope Leo XIII,
in the name
of Christ,
to consecrate the
whole world to the
Sacred Heart
of Jesus.
35. In his encyclical
Annum Sacrum
(May 25, 1899)
Pope Leo said
that all mankind
should be
consecrated to
the Sacred Heart
of Jesus, and
he made this
consecration on
June 11, 1899.
36. Pius XII
promoted in
his encyclical
Haurietis Aquas
the devotion to
the Sacred
Heart.
“Jesus, during
his live, passion
and agony
has known
and loved each
and every one of
us and he gave
himself up
for us.”
37. The Son of God loved me and surrendered himself for me” Gal 2,20. He has loved
us all with a human heart. Therefore the Sacred Heart of Jesus, pierced for our
sins and our salvation (cf. Jn 19, 34), “is considered as the principle indicator
and symbol… of the love the Divine Redeemer has continually for the eternal
Father and for all men” (Pio XII, Enc."Haurietis aquas": DS 3924; cf. DS 3812).
38. The true devotion
to the Sacred Heart
requires making an
effort to know Him
in prayer and
study, to imitate his
virtues, especially
humility, and
identify fully with
Him in thoughts,
in order to think
like Him and not
like the world in
sentiments, loves
and behaviour.
39. 1. I will give them all the graces necessary for their
state of life.
2. I will give peace in their families.
3. I will console them in all their troubles.
4. I will be their refuge in life and especially in death.
5. I will abundantly bless all their undertakings.
6. Sinners shall find in my Heart the source and
infinite ocean of mercy.
7. Tepid souls shall become fervent.
8. Fervent souls shall rise speedily to great perfection.
9. I will bless those places wherein the image of My
Sacred Heart shall be exposed and venerated.
10. I will give to priests the power to touch the most
hardened hearts.
11. Persons who propagate this devotion shall have
their names eternally written in my Heart.
12. In the excess of the mercy of my Heart, I promise
you that my all powerful love will grant to all
those who will receive Communion on the First
Fridays, for nine consecutive months, the grace
of final repentance: they will not die in my
displeasure, nor without receiving the
sacraments; and my Heart will be their
secure refuge in that last hour.
Promises of the Sacred Heart of Jesus
for those who practise this devotion -
40. The Sacred Heart of Jesus and
the Immaculate Heart of Mary
Another most precious gift of His
Sacred Heart is, as We have said,
Mary the beloved Mother of God
and the most loving Mother of us
all. She who gave birth to our
Savior according to the flesh and
was associated with Him in
recalling the children of Eve to the
life of divine grace, has deservedly
been hailed as the spiritual
Mother of the whole human race.
And so St. Augustine writes of her:
"Clearly She is Mother of the
members of the Savior (which is
what we are), because She labored
with Him in love that the faithful
who are members of the Head
might be born in the Church."
De sancta virginitate 6 PL 40, 399.
43. This devotion invites those who practise it to have in the words
of Paul of Tarso “the same sentiments as Jesus Christ” Phil 2,5
