Imagine watching the news and seeing a picture of a man with a ski mask and knife in hand. What words that come to mind with regard to this mental image? Might the man to be a murderer? Do words like “scary,” “frightening,” and “dangerous” arise unbidden? Media outlets like the news, movies, and T.V. shows off paint the image of a serial killer as one with a ski mask and knife. People have been primed to make these associations to then respond accordingly, perhaps in fear, shock, or caution. Priming is when a stimulus, in the form of a cue, triggers a reaction in our cognition and releases as set of subsequent behavior (White, Danek, Herring, Taylor, & Crites, 2018). According to Alhabash, McAlister, Wonkyung, Lou, Cunningham, Quilliam, and Richards (2017), priming makes it so that, after a participant is exposed to a cue, they respond to the following stimulus with the information related to and triggered by the cue to then make decisions. Now, if the cues were sexually-implicit, would it provoke a pattern of similarly sexual thoughts and concepts? What, then, are the effects of sexually-primed advertisements on an individual’s judgment of character?

Abstract APA—Disaster Recovery and Public Education
Abstract
Two major catastrophic events have forced a nationwide reaction and prompted reevaluations of disaster planning, response and recovery: Hurricane Hugo in 1986, and the Gulf hurricane season of 2005. These catastrophes revealed major discrepancies in the recovery process as well as public education. Given the increase in public awareness of natural disasters, education becomes more crucial along with the need for local governments to become more proactive in preparation for and self-sufficiency throughout the duration of a disaster. This paper will provide examples of shortcomings in public education regarding disasters and offer suggestions for correcting this problem. It will also provide an overview of some long term recovery glitches and examples of methods that have proven successful in other areas. The suggestions and solutions are being taken from sources such as the Journal of Homeland Security and the United States Government Accountability Office. Other sources that have been consulted were produced by specialists being consulted by the emergency and disaster management leaders. Long term recovery and public education go hand in hand. When the members of a community know what situations they could be facing in a disaster, they will be better equipped to face, survive, and recover more effectively than those of the same community who have not been given crucial information. Long term recovery regarding members of a community who understand the importance of their role as citizens is much more effective than that of a helpless community who has not been given the proper tools.

Five areas regarding the safety of YouTube for consumers were identified: (a) harmful health material targeted at consumers (such as inappropriate marketing of tobacco or direct-to-consumer drug advertising); (b) public display of unhealthy behaviour (such as people displaying self-injury behaviours or hurting others); (c) tainted public health messages (i.e. the rise of negative voices against public health messages); (d) psychological impact from accessing inappropriate, offensive or biased social media content; and (e) using social media to distort policy and research funding agendas. The examples presented should contribute to a better understanding about how to promote a safe consumption and production of social

Imagine watching the news and seeing a picture of a man with a ski mask and knife in hand. What words that come to mind with regard to this mental image? Might the man to be a murderer? Do words like “scary,” “frightening,” and “dangerous” arise unbidden? Media outlets like the news, movies, and T.V. shows off paint the image of a serial killer as one with a ski mask and knife. People have been primed to make these associations to then respond accordingly, perhaps in fear, shock, or caution. Priming is when a stimulus, in the form of a cue, triggers a reaction in our cognition and releases as set of subsequent behavior (White, Danek, Herring, Taylor, & Crites, 2018). According to Alhabash, McAlister, Wonkyung, Lou, Cunningham, Quilliam, and Richards (2017), priming makes it so that, after a participant is exposed to a cue, they respond to the following stimulus with the information related to and triggered by the cue to then make decisions. Now, if the cues were sexually-implicit, would it provoke a pattern of similarly sexual thoughts and concepts? What, then, are the effects of sexually-primed advertisements on an individual’s judgment of character?

Abstract APA—Disaster Recovery and Public Education
Abstract
Two major catastrophic events have forced a nationwide reaction and prompted reevaluations of disaster planning, response and recovery: Hurricane Hugo in 1986, and the Gulf hurricane season of 2005. These catastrophes revealed major discrepancies in the recovery process as well as public education. Given the increase in public awareness of natural disasters, education becomes more crucial along with the need for local governments to become more proactive in preparation for and self-sufficiency throughout the duration of a disaster. This paper will provide examples of shortcomings in public education regarding disasters and offer suggestions for correcting this problem. It will also provide an overview of some long term recovery glitches and examples of methods that have proven successful in other areas. The suggestions and solutions are being taken from sources such as the Journal of Homeland Security and the United States Government Accountability Office. Other sources that have been consulted were produced by specialists being consulted by the emergency and disaster management leaders. Long term recovery and public education go hand in hand. When the members of a community know what situations they could be facing in a disaster, they will be better equipped to face, survive, and recover more effectively than those of the same community who have not been given crucial information. Long term recovery regarding members of a community who understand the importance of their role as citizens is much more effective than that of a helpless community who has not been given the proper tools.

Older adults from the baby boomer generation now account for over one-fifth of the U.S. population. Many chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer,
stroke, chronic respiratory diseases, Alzheimer’s disease, and diabetes are the leading causes of death among older adults. With the shift from infectious
diseases to chronic disease and degenerative illnesses, is the nation ready to assist older adults in living long and healthy lives? In this course, you have gleaned
skills and techniques in analyzing public health policies and communicating social justice issues when assisting the aging population.
For your final project, imagine you are working with a group of older adults facing a public health policy issue. You have been asked to advocate on behalf of this
group by developing a policy brief to present to a representative of your state or a state with which you are familiar. You will need to identify the public health
issue with the assistance of your population. Your next step would be to compose a public health policy brief explaining the purpose and significance of the
public health policy issue and provide recommendations to a policy maker with potential solutions.
The project is divided into three milestones, which will be submitted at various points throughout the course to scaffold learning and ensure quality final

presents a range of safety concerns for consumers in social media, with a case study on YouTube. We conducted a scan of abstracts on ‘quality criteria’ related to YouTube. Five areas regarding the safety of YouTube for consumers were identified: (a) harmful health material targeted at consumers (such as inappropriate marketing of tobacco or direct-to-consumer drug advertising); (b) public display of unhealthy behaviour (such as people displaying self-injury behaviours or hurting others); (c) tainted public health messages (i.e. the rise of negative voices against public health messages); (d) psychological impact from accessing inappropriate, offensive or biased social media content; and (e) using social media to distort policy and research funding agendas. The examples presented should contribute to a better understanding about how to promote a safe consumption and production of social
media for consumers, and an evidence-based approach to designing social media interventions for health. The
potential harm associated with the use of unsafe social media content on the Internet is a major concern. Create a timeline for the historical events that have shaped the U.S. healthcare system in the past century. Once the timeline has been developed, create a PowerPoint presentation using the record audio feature to add Voiceover narration.
The timeline information should include:
A minimum of 20 events with a minimum of a three sentence description for each event.

The prevalence of social media has had a huge impact on society in the area of how we tend to relate to each other and on what is considered to be normal in general. Taking a look at the ways in which social media changes attitudes and "norms" makes for an interesting study, and one that is applicable to understanding how society is slowly changing over time.
For this assignment, you will first conduct your own research on the effects of social media on societal norms (Part 1), then you will examine what has been found through previous research conducted by others (Part 2).
Part 1:
Compare and contrast the attitudes of two cohorts of people; one that consists of five people that rarely use social media and one cohort of five people that uses social media 2 or more hours a day.
Create a list of five people that you know that use social media at least 2 or more hours per day. This group of people will make up your first cohort. Then create a list of five people that you know that either do not use social media or use it very rarely. Take into account age when creating the cohorts, and try to keep the ages as similar as possible between the cohorts. Keeping a certain level of consistency in the two cohorts will help to negate the potential effects of generational differences. Provide a brief description of each of the ten people you are going to interview divided into their respective cohorts.
In other words, list the five people in the social media at least 2 or more hours a day, and provide a brief description of each along with why you chose them. Then provide a list of the five people that rarely or never use social media, and provide a brief description of each along with why you chose them.
Interview the participants to learn the similarities and differences between the two cohorts as it relates to attitudes, lifestyles, and relationships. Write a two-page paper comparing and contrasting what you learned about the two cohorts. Be sure to relate your findings to cultivation theory and socialization theory in the paper.
Part 2:
Now you will compare your research with research findings through previous research conducted by others. Look up at least 3 articles in the Rasmussen Library that relate to the topic of social media and its impact on society. You are not limited to articles that are strictly written on the specific topic of social media and norms. Articles that are covering social media and society are available from a wide number of angles. After studying these articles, write a two-page paper on what you learned on the topic of social media and its potential impact on societal attitudes, customs, and norms.
