Laaste Jolla Bolla
Renier Hattingh
Die laaste dag van die matrieks se
skoolloopbaan is die begin van elke
graad se bevordering. Z-dag is dalk vir
die Matrieks hartseer, verál as een van
jou beste vriende in die laaste Jolla Bolla
draai.
As daar een
dag is wat vir ewig by ’n Matriekleerder
Paul Roos gee vir ons so
iets in die toekoms as ’n man in die same-
Gebruik jou tyd
wees wanneer jy in daardie laaste Jolla
Bolla draai ...

Die eksamen is om
die draai. Vir die graad 8's, is
dit net nog 'n eksamen. Vir die graad
11's, is dit egter 'n ander storie. Dié
eksamen...bepaal of hulle drome gaan
waar word, of nie.
nie. Heel eenvoudig, omdat daardie
punte nie na universiteite
landswyd gestuur word
nie. Dis hierdie eksamen se
punte wat die land vol gaan
toer opsoek na studieplek.
Hierdie eksamen gaan hulle
toekoms maak of breek. Ja, dit
klink ernstig, maar dis Paul
Roosers waarvan ek praat, en Paul
Roosers is kalm mense.
Baie
sterkte aan die graad 11's, asook die
hele skool. Voorspoed met alle stu-
dies, en gee julle beste. Hopelik word
geen ontwrigting deur die "studente"
veroorsaak tydens die eksamen
nie. Volgende jaar se leerlingraad
is reg vir aksie, met hulle "Back to
Basics"-veldtog en hulle uitryke na
die gemeenskap. Lees meer oor hulle
inisiatiewe op bladsy 3, 6 en 7.

The newly elected Student Council
for 2017 has decided to improve the
school – not by adding new rules or
values – but by revisiting the initial,
basic, building blocks that carried
Paul Roos Gymnasium forward for
150 years. The Student Council plans
on doing this through the Back to
Basics Campaign.
The Campaign will aim to remind
the scholars of the most basic, yet
most ignored, principles of what Paul
Roosers are expected to look like.
Inspections will be held much more
frequently, and will be a lot stricter.
“What should I look like to
side step spending breaks in
the Quad?”
• Always have a fresh, clean
shave
• Your blazer should have
all four its buttons
• Polish your shoes
• Have neat, short
hair
“What happens
when I don’t ad-
here to the above
mentioned?”
• If you are not
shaven, the Stu-
dent Council will
provide you with
a razor and some
shaving cream.
Make sure you have
R5, though. If the
SC Room is locked,
Mr Laas also runs a
razor shop from his
classroom down the
hall.
• The Student Council
will provide you with
buttons, to replace any
lost ones on your blazer.
• They will also have
shoe polish for those
dusty summer days.
• If your hair is too long
or messy – you will spend all your
first breaks in the Quad, until it is cut
or made neat.
To make life easier for eve-
ryone, the Student
Council advises
the stu- dents
to come
to
school
looking
neat. This
will save a lot
of time.
How will this be
enforced?
Every two
weeks,
a
new
basic
idea will be
announced
in assem-
bly by the
Head-
boy. It
either
be
hair,
shoes, but-
tons or shaving.
The specific idea
will be the main
focus during in-
spections held that
following two week
period.
Example: The
main idea for the
week is
an-
nounced
in assembly,
and it’s “shoes”.
The SC or PRD will then take learn-
ers with dusty, unpolished shoes to
the quad that specific Monday morn-
ing. Inspection will be held through-
out the week. If a student is found
with unpolished shoes, the SC will
provide him with shoe polish.
These steps will be repeated
throughout the year.
Motivational quotes will be put
up around the school, encoura-
ging students to be as neat
as possible. The boys have
surely seen the first two: “I
moustache you a ques-
tion, but I’m shaving it for
later” and “Do you like
a stubble, cause Bloem-
hof doesn’t”. There are
plenty more to come
throughout 2017. Here
are a few examples:
“Cinderella proved that
shiny shoes can change
your life”, “You are never
fully dressed without but-
tons on your blazer”, “The
only thing you can’t recycle
is wasted time” and “Life
isn’t perfect, but your hair
can be”.
The Campaign further aims
to inspire pupils to motivate
one another. As soon as a
sense of motivation is created
amongst the students, they can
work together, making Paul
Roos ever greater.
Yes, we know that no pupil
wants to shave after waking up
on a Monday morning with
their weekend stubble on their
cheeks, but it has to be done.
A friendly tip to the learners
affected by this: “Shave Sunday
evening” - Problem solved.
The SC is clearly very keen to
make the best out of their term
as SC for 2017.
We wish them all the best with
their initiatives, and hope they
succeed in everything they do.

Die Einde Is Bereik! (vervolg van bladsy 1)
JT Cronjé
Vir enige hoërskoolfietsryer is die
jaarlikse eindronde van die Spur
Schools Mountain Biking League in
die Magaliesberg die ongetwyfelde
hoogtepunt op hul fietsry-kalender.
Paul Roos het in die seunsafdeling
van die Wes Kaapse kompetisie eerste
geëindig en het dus gekwalifiseer om
in die September-vakansie aan hierdie
gesogte kompetisie se finaal te gaan
deelneem.
Teen die einde van die O/15-resies
het PRG die algehele eerste posisie
beklee en Jamie Penfold het die O/15-
resies in ’n tyd van 00:44:56 gewen.
Tydens die O/16- sowel as gedurende
die O/19- wedrenne het PRG onge-
lukkig pap wiele gekry (letterlik) en
hul voorsprong verloor.
Paul Roos het algeheel derde geëin-
dig met ’n totaal van 99 punte. Die
span wat egter met die louere weg
gestap het, was Menlopark met 118
punte.
Die toekoms van Paul Roos-fietsry is
blink. Vyf van PRG se O/15’s het in die
top 20 geëindig en met Contego wat
bankvas agter PRG-fietsry staan, kan
dinge net beter raak. Volgende jaar is
ons weer die kampioene!

Simple yet
Significant
Charl Smit
Die nuwe Leerlingraad het op 20 Oktober
’n gemeenskapsprojek by die Shiloh School
in Klipheuwel aangepak. Hulle het ’n Boe-
resportdag vir 130 kleuters van 3-6 jaar aan-
gebied.
gekoop. Die skooltjie se kinders en hulle
onderwysers het die dag terdeë geniet en
was skoon emosioneel toe die Paul Roosers
moes terugkeer Stellenbosch toe.
Leerlingraad volgende jaar bekend gaan stel
– dit sal aansluit by dié uitreik; wees dus op
julle hoede vir wat voorlê!
Die nuut verkose leerlingraad het dié
kwartaal ongetwyfeld ’n stap in die regte rig-
ting geneem.

Double-bassist Daniël de Villiers
is a member of the Cape Town
Philharmonic Youth Orchestra
(CPYO), and the first Paul Rooser in
history to accomplish this exceptional
achievement.
Daniël plays the double bass, which
is the largest and lowest-pitched
bowed string instrument in the
modern symphony orchestra. The
double bass is a standard member
of the orchestra, and features in
Western classical music, but is also
used in a range of other genres, such
as jazz, 1950s-style blues and rock
and roll, traditional country music,
tango and many types of folk music.
Playing for the CPYO is not for the
faint at heart. It is a sub-orchestra of the
Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra
(CPO) with the purpose of giving
young musicians practical experience
as well as granting them opportunities
to display their skills.
Rehearsal times require three hours of
every Saturday and on weekends before
big performances they practise for
three full days in a row.
The orchestra often tours around South
Africa for their performances and
in 2018 the destination for a tour is
Russia.
The Youth orchestra is currently
rehearsing for a the performance
of “Peter and the Wolf” under the
world-famous Carlo Ponti, an Italian
conductor working in the United States,
and the son of late film producer Carlo
Ponti sr. and Italian movie star Sophia
Loren. His younger brother is film
director Edoardo Ponti.
Because the standard is quite high, it is
almost impossible to join the orchestra
if you have not acquired at least Grade
5 in the instrument that you can play.
Daniël says that everything is always
possible if you are motivated enough.
This multi-talented Paul Rooser is also
an excellent swimmer and is currently
training (by swimming around 4 km
every morning!) for the South African
Championships next year in order to
gain national colours.
Paul Rooser takes culture to a whole new octave

Since its announcement in 2014,
fans of Blizzard Entertainment and
games of the First Person Shooter
genre have been on the edge of their
seats in anticipation of the competi-
tive hero-based shooter, Overwatch.
It has since received many positive
reviews.
The game has a huge player base six
months after release and is frequently
updated.
More than 13 million copies of
Overwatch were sold within a month
of the game's release, and the game is
growing faster than ever. Any further
downloadable content like new he-
roes, maps or skins come completely
free of charge, which emphasises the
point that Overwatch is destined for
a long lifespan. Blizzard has released
one new hero who goes by the name
“Ana” and one new map called
“Eichenwalde”.
When starting a
game of Over-
watch, you are given the option to
pick one of the 22 heroes that the
game has in store for you. These
characters are organized into four
categories: attack, defence, tank and
support. It is important that each of
the six players in the team chooses
the right hero for the strategy the
team has chosen.
The heavy emphasis on teamwork in
Overwatch is one of the most ex-
hilarating aspects of the game, but it
can be a drawback if you have bad or
incompetent teammates.
The heroes are fun to play, and all
feature rich backstories and lore.
Tracer, the hero displayed on Over-
watch's front cover, can teleport past
enemies and is mostly used to flank
and distract the enemy team. Junk-
rat, an Australian demo man with a
history of robbing banks, can shoot
explosives from his weapon to scare
the enemy team away. Reinhardt, a
former crusader wearing a full plate
of armour, can hold up a large shield
to protect the team.
Almost every playable hero's
backstory can be explored through
animated shorts and comics. It feels
like a living and breathing world. The
only shortcoming in the character
aspect of the game is that certain
characters are completely useless to
the team and are seldom ever used in
competitive matches. Torbjorn, for
example, is a Swedish dwarf whose
purpose is to build automatic turrets.
He is an interesting character
with a rich
backstory, but no one ever uses him
as he is easy to defeat.
Blizzard responds to feedback on its
forums and websites like Reddit, so
these heroes will likely be changed.
You can get skins, emotes, victory
poses, voice lines and highlight intros
in loot boxes for your heroes, which
you receive when levelling up. You
can also spend real money on loot
boxes, which isn't really a problem
since you can only receive cosmetic
items from these boxes.
The competitive mode in Over-
watch is for people who want to take
the game seriously and want a real
challenge. The only problem with the
competitive mode is that trolls who
ruin the match for the team aren't
punished hard enough and only re-
ceive a maximum ban of seven days.
Blizzard should enforce stricter rules
on this type of people.
The maps in Overwatch are very
polished and have their own unique
lore relating to the characters you can
play. Every map in the game requires
experience, which presents a good
challenge for new players. It's also
worth noting that each map is used
for only one of the game modes: Pay-
load, Capture Points or King of the
Hill, so you won't see multiple game
modes shoehorned into a single map.
Overwatch has had two different
seasonal events so far, namely Sum-
mer Games and Halloween. Dur-
ing Summer Games, you could play
Lu- cioball, which lets you play
soccer in teams of three
with the
sup-
port
hero, Lucio. So far, these events are
well made and have added to the
already great Overwatch experience.
Despite Overwatch being Blizzard's
first attempt at the genre, they have
crafted an almost perfect game that
will last for years to come. The slight
flaws present in the game pale in
comparison to the good things that
Overwatch offers, and I declare it
a must-buy for anyone who enjoys
competitive FPSs.
