1. A nearly uncontrollable veldfire broke out in Johannesdal outside Stellenbosch on January 19th and spread to the Simonsberg area, destroying 2600 hectares of forest and vineyard land. It took over 80 firefighters three days to bring the fire under control.
2. Paul Roos High School staff and the school itself collected donations of over R1200 for the brave firefighters. One PRG staff member described it as one of the scariest things he had ever seen, with the fire only 100 meters from his home.
3. Two PRG learners, Rudi and Carl Thiel, saw 75 of the 80 hectares of their family's pine forest destroyed by the fires

Driehoek-Prestigebyeenkoms – hier,
aan huis, beter bekend as BloemRoos
– wat op 5 Febuarie by Coetzenburg
plaasvind.
dig me. Olivier, hoof van atletiek en
adjunkrektor in beheer van dissipline,
entoesiasties.
Die afgelope drie jaar het Paul Roos
en Bloemhof saam koning gekraai by
In Paul Roos se 150ste bestaansjaar is
feesviering in gedagte,” sê me. Olivier.
Tydens die Desembervakansie wat
so pas agter die rug is, het Paul Roos
een van sy top-atlete, Benje Momberg
verloor. Benje het ’n groot rol in verlede
jaar se oorwinning gespeel. Weens ’n
By enige atletiekbyeenkoms word
bring,” sê me. Stofberg.
fondasie waarop ander groot gebeurt-
enisse gebou word. Me.
Merke ... gereed ...weg!

'n Hees stem,
sonbrand en tri-
omf is die eerste drie
dinge wat in my kop opkom wanneer
ek dink aan Driehoek-atletiek. In my
Driehoek kom hierdie jaar terug
Stellenbosch toe en dit beloof om
’n grote te wees. “The Cartel”, ons
nuwe cheerleaders, sal sorg vir vele
opwinding. Daar is sprake van vuur-
toertjies tydens ’n karnavaloptog.
verpligtend is. ’n Mens kan ook nie
eintlik die arme ouens kwalik neem
dat hulle so opsien na Driehoek nie –
die enigste ding wat hulle die afgelope
paar gewen het is ’n tweedehandse
drumline.
Vir meer inligting rakende Drie-
hoek 2016, lees Alexander Klose se
in-diepte ondersoek rakende hierdie
jaar se byeenkoms.
I would also like to extend my best
wishes to all athletes, supporters, staff
and parents. I would say good luck,
but then again we're BloemRoos - we
don't need luck.

Paul Roos Gimnasium is nog altyd
’n skool met ongelooflike gees en
hierdie jaar, met die hulp van The
Second Milers en The Cartel gaan
2016 niks minder as GEES wees nie.
Ons het laasjaar baie gehoor van
die sogenaamde Fan Club en dit het
nou ’n realiteit geword. Die fan club
se naam is The Second Milers. Die
naam kom van oud-rektor mnr. DJ
milers”.
Daar is altyd ’n reuse skare by die
eerstespanrugby, wat so moet wees,
skouers trek.
The Second Milers is oop vir alle
Paul Roosers, maar hulle soek tog
’n paar ouens wat hulle daartoe sal
verbind om oral te wees.
The Second Milers wil ook die
leerders se hulp hê by byvoorbeeld
die ontwerp van baniere en serpe,
sodat die rasieleiers (cheerleaders)
nie alles hoef te doen nie. Daar gaan
sekere Second Miler-geleenthede
wees wat op hulle
Instagram-bladsy (@
secondmilers) bekend
gemaak sal word.
The Cartel is die
rasieleiers vir 2016
onder leiding van Han-
ré ‘Strandbrak’ du Toit. Ander
lede sluit in Jesse ‘Kuilaboi’ Johnson,
Drikus ‘Wee-Man’ van Zyl, Chris-
tophé ‘Slim Shady’ Cronjé, Martin
‘Tori-Kong’ Louw, Josh ‘WildeOne’
Austin, Daniel ‘Beeff’ Greeff, Johann
‘Vlam’ Joubert, Benje ‘Kenje’ Momb-
erg, Paul ‘Tjoppie’ Barnard, Inus
‘Mexican’ Marx en Jandré ‘Skroef’
van der Westhuizen.
Hoekom The Cartel?
Cartel volgens die Woordeboek:
“A collusive association of inde-
pendent enterprises (cheerleaders)
formed to monopolise production
and distribution of a certain product
or service (Paul Roos Gees).”
so wat gaan hierdie
jaar anders wees?
Die Cartel wil met die hulp van
The Second Milers die gees op die
pawiljoene hoog hou, maar nie net
daar nie – ook by die skool. Hulle wil
méér pretbyeenkomste voor groot
wedstryde reël, tydens pouses, by-
voorbeeld.
’n Cartel is nie altyd ’n slegte ding nie

When questioned, both head boys
believed that their own hostel has the
most ‘gees’, but Daniel pointed out
that Prima has a Quad, where they
can actually have sing-songs,
whereas Nova can only sing
when they are
in the shower.
Daniel plans
on building
an even bigger
atmosphere in
the hostel du-
ring his tenure
at Prima, while
Jandré wants to build on Nova’s ‘gees’
by having more braais and stay-in
weekends while he is at the helm of
his hostel.
The fire burns bright between the
two ‘hostile’ hostels; the bar is set
high and the stakes even higher. It’s
Nova Zoo versus Prima Jungle. It’s
the new kid on the block versus the
old inhabitant, an ancient battle for
supremacy.
And in the words of Bertrand
Russell, “War does not determine
who is right, only who is left.”
Christo Langenhoven
Prima versus Nova.
It is an age-old battle, which started
when the newcomers Nova first
decided to open their doors to
Paul Roos pupils, spark-
ing an instant rivalry
with Prima, the origi-
nal hostel.
The fire of the rivalry
burns brightly to this
day.
Every year, the
responsibility of head
boy falls onto the shoulders of two
new candidates. This year Daniel
Greeff (aka BEEF ) takes the reigns
for Prima and Jandré van der
Westhuizen (aka Skroef ) is in charge
of Nova. Daniel, originally from Table
View, was ecstatic, yet nervous to be
coming to his new ‘home away from
home’. Jandré, who had adopted a
happy-go-lucky mentality before
coming to Nova, had a different
perception of what he was going to
expect.
Jandré has enjoyed a good first four

years in Nova, particularly his grade
8 year. Daniel, on the other hand,
thought of his first four years as an
absolute ‘jol’ .
According to Daniel, what makes
Prima the best hostel in the school,
is that it has the best dynamic, the
best people, the best assistants and
of course, the best Hostel Father (aka
known as Mr Van Niekerk), while
Jandré believes that Nova has the per-
fect balance between academics and
sport, and it has the greatest people
who inhabit the school’s hallways.

’n Bykans onbeheerbare veldbrand
het op 19 Januarie in Johannesdal
net buite Stellenbosvh ontstaan en na
die Simonsberg-area begin versprei.
Uiteindelik is 2600 hektaar hout- en
wynplaasgrond daardeur verwoes.
By Paul Roos Gimnasium is daar op
een oggend blitsvinnig R700 deur die
personeel ingesamel, en die skool self
het nog R500 bygesit. Met die geld
is lafenis vir die dapper vuurvegters
gekoop en aangery.
Mnr.
Opperman was
die veiligheid van almal sy grootste
kommer. Te danke aan die ongeloof-
like boere van Stellenbosch se hulp,
is al die inwoners van hierdie plase
goed ondersteun.
Plase help mekaar en beskerm
mekaar. Die plaaswerkers het ook
natuurlik kom help. Die onder-
steuningsnetwerk was glo fantasties.
Mnr. Opperman vertel ook dat mens
“amper verlig” voel wanneer jy moet
ontruim, omdat dit voel asof jy “heel-
tyd op die mespunt” is.
Rudi en Carl Thiel, twee PRG-
leerders, se woonplaas (Delheim) het
ook erg gely onder die brande deur-
dat 75 uit die 80 hektaar van hulle
dennewoude afgebrand het.
Die gesin het onder andere bran-
dende stompe geblus en toerusting
vir die brandbestryders aangery. Die
vuur is op 29 Januarie, nadat daar dae
aaneen geveg is, uiteindelik onder
beheer gebring.

• Make yourself that special somebody. There’s nothing wrong with taking a day out to appreciate yourself.
You’ve made it this far. You’ve fought through heartbreak, pain, suffering, and other general unpleasantries. That’s
pretty cool. You still deserve love, so take a day out to make yourself feel special.
• Treat yourself. This point sort of ties in with the first point, but is just as important. Do something you love
to do. Read a book. Go on an adventure. Spend time with family. Catch up on that TV series you never got around to
enjoying.
• Remember it gets better. It may feel lonely right now, but remember that doesn’t necessarily mean it’s going to
feel like that forever. It may change in a day, in a month, in a year. Keep going.
• Surround yourself with other people who feel the same way you do. Keep each other company. Build each
other up. You’d be surprised at how many people become life-long friends during times of hardship. That’s when people
show their true colours.
• GO FOR IT. If you have somebody you’ve always wanted to express your feelings for, there is no better day than
Valentine’s Day. You’ll regret not having done it.
ALTERNATIVE THEME
Valentine’s Day is a special day for most of us. But, I’ll be the first to admit that it’s increasingly difficult to come up
with creative ideas for Valentine’s Day. People grow tired of the cliché roses and chocolates.
So, here are some ideas that could put a fresh spin on Valentine’s Day for you and your partner.
• Do the unexpected. As cliché as this idea is, it works. A day dedicated to your significant other only benefits
you if you show that you’ve taken the time to plan out something unique.
• Be creative. Chocolate and roses? Really? You did that last year. Save up a bit more, and spend it on something
cute, and unique. Like a teddy bear. Or buy them tickets to that concert they so desperately want to see. Splurge and get
them that piece of ridiculously overpriced clothing that they can’t stop emphasizing how much they want.
• Do it yourself. Nothing screams ‘I care about you!’ like a homemade card, or origami roses. Think outside the
box, be unique, show that there’s a part of you that they don’t know about.
• Make it THEIR special day. Watch that movie that they really want to go see. Take them to a fancy restaurant.
Write a poem for them.
In general, just show that you not only care about them, but appreciate them. And remember, don’t put it all out right
at the start. Leave some element of mystery, so that they keep coming back.
Coming out Tops on Valentine’s Day
Ian du Toit
For some, Valentine’s Day is just
another normal day, filled with no
real surprises, and that’s fine.
But for most of us, Valentine’s Day
is a day filled with copious amounts
of puppy-dog affection, promises of
‘forevers’, and trademark chocolate
hearts and roses.
Alternatively, Valentine’s Day can be
one of those days that either a) brings
back memories of relationships we’d
really prefer to not remember, or b)
just plainly makes us sad. Seeing as
Valentine’s Day has a habit of repeat-
ing itself and often making people
feel awkward
around cou-
ples, here are
some tips
and tricks to make
Valentine’s Day spe-
cial for you regardless of whether or
not you have a ‘special somebody.’

A story line of black ops missions
performed by jailed super villains,
with a ticking bomb implanted their
skins as a reminder to not try to
escape or cause trouble!
The all-new Marvel and DC movie,
“The Suicide Squad”, was released
at the end of last year, much to the
pleasure of its fans. In this movie,
there will be no superheroes or any-
thing related, as this is an all-villain
movie.
Task Force X, also known as The Su-
icide Squad, is an elite team of jailed
super villains, working on behalf of
the US Government.
The taskforce of villains must work
as a team, which is an impossible
request as it is just not in their nature
to do so. Starring actors such as Will
Smith and Margot Robbie, they are
made an offer they cannot refuse.
For each successful mission they
complete, their jail sentences will be
reduced.
Needless to say, the villains accept
the offer, without knowing what they
are getting themselves into. What
they do not know is that these black
ops missions are given to them for a
reason.
The missions are so dangerous and
near impossible and should they fail
no one would even miss them, never
mind mourn their death.
Did I mention that they are carry-
ing a bomb under their skin, which
will explode if they would try to
escape or cause trouble. Yeah, I think
I did!
Watching this movie, do not ever
expect to see a superman flying to the
rescue…

The Paul Roos underwater hockey
team took part at the annual national
Underwater Hockey Clubs Tourna-
ment, held at the Maties Pool in Stel-
lenbosch from 3 to 5 December 2015
and won silver.
Not bad for a group of men who
only breathe occasionally. Half man,
half fish – Proudly Paul Roos.
Underwater hockey, arguably one
of the lesser known sports among the
array of activities
practised by Paul Roosers, was
first developed in 1954 as a way for
scuba divers to keep fit during winter
months. The aim of the game is to
flick a lead-filled puck into the oppo-
sing team's goal box using a specially
crafted 30cm long stick.
This all seems rather doable, until
you realise that all game play takes
place two metres beneath the surface.
Maties’ underwater hockey is man-
aged by Jack van Blerk, who served
just short of a decade in total as a
hostel assistant at Prima and Nova.
The next big event on the under-
water hockey calendar is the Junior
Nationals Tournament,
scheduled to be held in Johannes-
burg from 10 to 13 March. Anyone
interested in trialing for the Boland
team is welcome. Trials will be held
on Sunday, 7 February at the Maties
swimming pool.
