Tips for Identifying Leadership Potential in Junior Staff
As a manager, you’re likely to often be on the lookout for employees who show a
potential for promotion—however, it can be difficult to identify the best and
brightest among the crowd. After all, employees very commonly show their
managers a different face than they show their coworkers. Here are a few
effective tips on how to identify leadership potential in your junior staff.
• Know what leadership skills
look like. These skills are essential
to understand, and managers must
be able to spot them in their junior
employees. An employee with
leadership potential stands out by
being able to understand his or her
role in the company as quickly as
possible, commits to the company’s
mission and vision, sets a positive
example for other junior staff, shows
professionalism and integrity, and

solving while being able to efficiently demonstrate those solutions to others.
• Observe your junior staff carefully. Which employees stand out as hard
workers with their sights set on a long career with your company? These

leadership style an employee would adapt, were he or she promoted. Of course,
you cannot rely solely on personality tests to identify who has potential and who
does not; it is simply a tool in your toolbox, not a definitive measurement of an
employee’s potential.
• Conduct regular check-ins with your junior staff. You may implement
a mentoring system, wherein senior employees meet with junior staff regularly to
set goals for each employee and see whether the employee meets those goals
within a specific amount of time—follow-through is imperative for successful
leaders. This will also give the senior staff valuable time to get to know each
employee and report back as to which ones seem to be motivated to move up in
the company.
