Are Successful Business Leaders Born or Made?
Certain qualities will have an enormous affect on the success of an individual's business. Great leaders are
known for their vision, drive, excellent communication skills, adeptness at building relationships, and being
able to capitalize on the talents of their team. While the question of whether these leaders are born or
made can certainly sound like one that requires a basic answer, the solution is much more complex.
Born leaders
Growing up, most people know the neighborhood children
that are born leaders. These unique individuals have
intuitively mastered the art of cultivating teams and leading
others to greatness, with themselves at the helm. As these
children grew up, it surprised no one when they became
successful business leaders. There were also certain
children who seemed to come with a disposition that was
better for being a follower. They might have disliked getting
out and communicating openly. They may have been
fantastic within their own set of skills, but they did not seem to have the capacity to lead others. They
preferred to work behind the scenes and fulfill their own roles. Outside of these two extremes, however, it
seems as though many leadership characteristics can be learned.
The leaders that are made
Schools that are able to successfully cultivate great leaders will work to help these students learn to
effectively communicate and confidently encourage others. The vast majority of people fall between the
two extremes of a born leader and a born follower. They come with some leadership skills that can be
further refined and encouraged to take a person from a mediocre leader to a great one. People can learn
to listen, become more self-aware, to relate well to others, to cultivate a solid team, and lead an
organization to greatness.
Even those who might qualify as born leaders can often further refine their leadership skills to improve
their abilities and become an even stronger leader. Interestingly, just over half of top executives believe
that great leaders are made, rather than born. Prominent psychologist, Dr. Peter Shallard, believes that it
is largely nurture as well, especially when specific behaviors are modeled for children at critical stages.

Scientifically, no consensus exists about whether leaders are born or made. Many people believe that a
combination of natural traits and skill training work together to create the greatest leaders in the world
and in business. The question of whether just anyone can become a business star is yet unanswered,
although the belief that many traits can be learned and refined in people who have at least a degree of a
natural leadership disposition seems widespread. Those who want to become business leaders have no
reason to doubt their abilities to learn these valuable skills with work and practice.
