Ballad Opera originated in England in the early 18th century as a form of popular entertainment that combined sentimental plays with musical numbers. It featured spoken dialogue and folk melodies. One of the most famous and earliest Ballad Operas was The Beggar's Opera from 1728 written by John Gay. Ballad Opera differed from Greek theater in that it allowed women to perform on stage and contained more exciting musical performances that were secular rather than focused on gods.
