Ballad Opera was a popular form of 18th century entertainment that combined sentimental plays with musical numbers. It featured both men and women on stage, unlike earlier Greek theater. One of the earliest and most famous Ballad Operas was The Beggar's Opera from 1728, written by John Gay. Classical music and nursery rhymes were often included in the productions. Ballad Opera attracted middle and upper class audiences who could afford the entertainment.
