By George Streather Greek Theatre
Why/How it first started Greek theatre was the very first kind of Musical Theatre. It was first created in 534BC to Honour the Greek Gods. The performances were to honour a God called Dionysus who was the God of Fertility.
Who used to go watch it? Woman were not allowed to watch the Greek plays except for hetari or courtesans who would be allowed to see it. The audience would consist of over 15,000 people or more. Woman were not allowed to act in the performances, so the woman acts were played by men dressed up as women. Times haven't changed that much.
What were the themes of performances? The performances would happen during the day and the actors would wear masks with expressions engraved into them. The main themes of the performances were love and the Gods. All the stories were shown through song, which i why there considered musicals. The theatre was constructed in such a way that the actors voice and singing could be heard at the furthest seat away.
What type of music would you be likely to hear? The main type of music were Hymn type music. Songs that you would usually find in church. The choir would sing and with the actors performing it was a rather magical affair.
What are the Similarities/Differences from musicals today? Both Greek and Modern theatres have the same set up. The audience sit in the seats and watch the performances on stage. They both use singing to tell but these days it includes dance routines and flash costumes with lights and all sorts.
